After having my steel cable shred I went with synthetic. Did a lot of research and discovered a marine and arborist shop and got Amsteel 3/8” working at 19k lbs and 1 1/8” working at 120k lbs for my 100’ recovery.
You can also buy wire rope from a logging supply store for much cheaper (an example is Timber Supply Company in Philomath) than ordering replacement wire rope from your company. Replacement 125' 5/16" cable for my 9.5ti is $253.79!
I thought one of the main advantages of synthetic ropes was that they were much better at kinetic pulls that can be used to get a vehicle unstuck when the towing vehicle weighed much less than would otherwise be required to get a vehicle unstuck that was a combination of too heavy and/or too badly stuck for a normal pulling technique.
I have a steel 7/16"(90 feet) rope in my 15k warn. My three complaints are this. 1- weight. It adds a bit more weight in front of the axle on top of the already 135lb winch and then add more for the mount (power wagon inside frame) or bumper (mine is close to 300lbs, I believe more) 2- handling it can be painful if a wire is sticking out that you don't know about. 3- if it kinks is pretty much toast. That becomes a weak spot and usually follows with recommendation of replace or cut and loose (x) amount of feet. With that said. I won't go synthetic here. The salts from 8-9 months of winter would destroy it before I could use it.
I've seen synthetic last longer than steel more times than not since it's more weather resistant. I'm a commercial diver and work with both. Salt Air and water is brutal on steel. My synthetic line on my winch is still in original working order and I've abused the hell out of it for 6 years now. I have a fid for when it breaks but still hasn't yet. I live in harsh jungle conditions and use my winch weekly for years.
Huh. I live in Michigan, what they call the RUST BELT, because of all the salt on the roads. Here it is not uncommon to see brand new vehicles completely rusted out in 6-7 years. The wire rope on my Jeeps Warn 8274 was installed in 1981 and still looks and performs like new. It has oulasted a dozen 4x4s. I also drove a tow truck and roll back wrecker for years and have NEVER replaced a wire rope from salt damage. Keep in mind these wire ropes are LITTERALLY being drug through salt covered snow and water 100 hrs every week for half of the year. I also see a synthetic winch rope fail almost everytime we go off roading, which is why I will never use one. @saintarmstrong8790
Metalic for industrial, workers… if it kills you, your family it’s gonna collect insurance. Nowadays any metal component must be throwed away for recreational use. Sintetic line with a spliced loop, sintetíc shackles,… few garden hose pieces, to pass the line through if it’s gonna rub something… the only thing I use made on metal, cos’ nonody have allready invented a soft one, are pulleys and that’s why I try not to use them, only when there are no other way. Bring a splicer for field repairs. People doesn’t even open the bonnet when winching!!! Most of the time I see someone winching I see people putting not only their lives in danger, but also their relatives and friends. Use your brain, please!
Dyneema sinthetic rope are more stronger and cheaper ,10mm thickness can sustain 8,5tone and i think none steel rope cannot sustain with that thickness so much

Synthetic rope costs 2/3 as much as steel? (5:24). I thought it was more expensive?
It’s more expensive over the lifetime of the cable. The steel cost more initially but you don’t have to replace it as often as the synthetic.

What would be the difference if you have a failure onw vs the other
Synthetic rope doesn't last as long. That's a deal breaker for me.
