@@bunsguns8222I have a 2017 Ram 2500 with a G56, stock the truck is detuned because it is at the limit of the stock clutch. Once the truck is tuned and deleted the stock dual mass clutch doesn’t last long. I have a twin disc Valair that holds the power fine. The main issue is that they just didn’t sell that well. From 2010-1018 manuals only made up about 3% of overall sells. It’s unfortunate but most buyers don’t want a stick shift anymore.

I used to hate the dial shifter in my Ram and My Jeep, but once I got used to it , its not bad. It actually opens up the cab and gives you more room. They have never given me any problems. It’s easy to turn. Crisp positive clicks.

If you are having issues with the Aisin transmission in your Ram it needs a free remap from your dealer. My 2017 four door, Ram HD one ton dually has the Aisin and when empty got over 20 mpg but always liked to shift up too early and was in sixth gear at any speed over 35.
So I took it in for the dealer and found zero issues but recommended a transmission remap. This worked great with the transmission staying in the lower gears much longer however now my mpg empty is about 15.

My 2021 3500 ram with the 68rfe has hill stop . I heard on another transmission talk that the zf will skip first gear if loaded light. Awesome video. Denis from Santa Rosa CA. The 8 speed of could bring the tow capacity up higher .this transmission sounds like the automated 13,18, 10 speed transmissions in the over the road trucks. Kenworth, peterbuilt , freightliner trucks .I pull a 15000 lb with my 68rfe and I do need more gears.

The 8hp70/75 and 8hp90 are absolute beautiful transmissions to drive and own. You sometimes cannot feel the shifts they are that smooth,. Quick shifting is an understatement, they have lightning fast gear changes. The only thing i find is like you said for most driving in a pickup they could actually do away with first gear starts. Make it available obviously manually, but more so if tow haul is selected than first gear starts are part of tow haul. The 8hp70 which I currently own has a Lower second gear than my older 6spd had for 1st gear!! Ive been around the old 904s, 727s 46rh/re and 47/48s. These ZF 8speeds are a thing of beauty!

D to R and R to D. I experience this type of concept on a LeBlond lathe where a machinist could change rpm levels while the spindle was still spinning. The gear change would take place after zero rpm was sensed. The spindle drive motor had a set of fly weights working like a governor and the fly weights had brushes that would make contact on a rotor disc and when there was zero rpm’s the weights of the governor would allow the brushes to make contact with the rotor and wires attached to the brushes acted like a switch completing a control circuit that allowed the motor to change gears. Similar concept I think ZF will use but electronically.

One thing about zf that im not sure alot of people understand is zf builds alot of powershift transmissions for agricultural equipment and construction equipment and alot of that works flawlessly and takes alot of abuse and the shuttle operation of those takes alot of abuse and keeps going, so if clutches are made of same or similar material then hopefully this will be a bullet proof transmission with little to no problems. Zf knows power transmission and does it well!

My wife's '18 Ram 2500 4wd 6.7L had fluid issues. I changed the oil pan to a PPE deeper aluminum pan. With fresh Valvoline synthetic the shifting improved quite a bit. After a few months I drained the fluid again. So just having a pan that allows a quick fluid change is great. I had been budgeting to put in an Allison transmission kit. But the ZF is superior. My Jeep JLU has the ZF, and drives much better than the Mercedes 5-speed in the JKU.

I could see how maybe they’d work out if you’re pulling a shit ton of weight all the time but doesn’t make sense on a daily. I bought a new 23’ 2500 6.7 with the 68rfe a few months ago. Came from a 22 ram 1500. Best trucks on the market imo. The tranny seems to be pretty solid, but I think the rpm’s are high as shit when I’m doing 75-80 mph. Hopefully this new 8 speed will drop those rpm’s while you’re cruising down the highway. GVWR and GCWR can be similar, but not necessarily the same. The 57k lb rating is probably for big box trucks. But your point is well taken, 1000 ft lbs at 57k lb GVWR leaves room for Ram to have higher torque in the pickup trucks.

I definitely think ram has needed to get rid of the 68rfe. But the aisin isn’t as bad. Aisin makes another transmission with 7 or 8 gears and that’s all the Cummins would need is 1 more gear. It has been a great trans over the years and was a powerhouse when it came to handling the performance of the Cummins HO. IMO I’d like to see the zf in the standard Cummins. And I’d like to see the aisin in the HO’s with either 7 or 8 gears.

A lot to be said for buying a Freightliner absolutely. What really kills these machines is DEF fluid imo with #irony a heavy displacement engine working at low RPMs is a far less bad "emitter" big time and of course a better engine if married with the right power train and suspension. Could start seeing some truly huge super duty because of the Dodge Powerwagon meaning much more "stout" robust build. Tesla Cybertruck is such a game changer if that works as basically is a literal Tank.

Nothing wrong with the 68RFE, I think people misconceive it for its predecessor. I’ve put plenty of miles behind the 68RFE. I understand not wanting to change filters at every fuel stop, but I want my equipment to last. So I'll change the fluids and filters on a maintenance schedule. That new ZF trans has way to much going on it’s gonna be an electrical nightmare. Being able to shift from drive to reverse while moving is not a good on the drivetrain especially with a heavy load. Shifting from drive to neutral at a stop is very stupid, trans is gonna hit first gear hard under hard acceleration. Good thing they are putting it in a ram just another nightmare trans. I hope it works for them. I don’t understand why people even buy ram heavy duty pickups, the trans is garbage both of them and the Cummins isn’t reliable anymore. Most people keep there trucks 200k tops and trade them in so why does anyone care if it lasts 1 million miles maybe .1% of people will ever do that. 99.9% of people that buy these trucks trade them in before 200k. How many 2012 Cummins have you seen with 1 million miles? I’ve seen more duramaxs with a million. My Allison 10 spd is the smoothest trans I’ve ever drove. I can’t believe I’m saying this but for 99% of people buying hd trucks the ford is a way better option than ram. Yeah the engine is toast at 200k but who the hell cares lol. What you said is important too just incomplete, and the pursuit of excellence and complete identification of flaws and their fixes is what is good mechanics. Not just one point important to me or any one person, a whole pursuit of design and mechanics. It's really very well known of the Valvebody more than any other part of the trans, and yet so many just don't pay attention then don't get it fixed then go chasing out of order downline fixes rather than the head and then the rest. No other part of the 68 or the Aisin has more impact to making those trannies back as a HD unit should be than the Valvebody. With just it alone trucks go on heavy hauling as they should with no fixes of other things, it's literally the Achilles Heel.
BTW no need to exaggerate it being "hour long video" for just mention of something as important as the achilles heel of a truck. Watchers actually would appreciate the info/warning.
