Just wondering if there is a way to make this system automatic? I'd like to have this running while I'm loading another shute to replace the empty shute. This will keep everything running until shutdown.
That's really cool. Too bad I don't drink enough soda or other canned beverages to use one of these... do you think it would work for fireplace duty? Splitting small, pre seasoned logs? Because that would be pretty cool.
You're a wizard 'arry! Question though...had you left the cylinder plumbed backwards would you have been able to uncompact the cans back to their original size and shape? You may have something here.
Question about the build. I bought a cylinder off ebay to build one of these and it says 1/4" on the fitting plugs. The cylinder you show in the plans from Princess Auto also says 1/4" for the fittings but the airline delivery kit says 3/8ths" in your plans. Is the 3/8ths" kit you show the correct one because they are maybe referring to inside or outside dimensions in either case? Princess auto has a 48 piece 3/8ths kit now for $43. instead of the 49 piece you got on clearance 2 years ago.
Goddamn you are awesome. I dont know how i am only now discovering you, not only are your builds on point but your vid production is top notch- nice quick cut editing is so nice compared to the slow rambling get on with it vids that are just uploads of one single take
Cool project! :-) I would take a bit off that support piece on top of the cylinder so that _if_ the end wall comes out it won't shear off the right hand air nipple on the cylinder, or at least give you some time to react and stop pushing the button. :-)
Hello! Love your videos. I need to know if the push button device is a 3-way. There's one for sale on ebay for cheaper than your supplier you list in the plans. Just want to make sure i get the right one. I've seen them in 3-way and 5-way and not sure what I need. Thanks, Mike S.
So.....what you gonna do with the cans? Or.....r u gonna melt em down? Nice build. I use a splitting stump and a wooden club. After I watch or read or watch and read the news, its time for cans. And, I really like my local Princess Auto 😊
Now all it needs is some way to automatically cycle so you're not having to hit the button all the time. Like a optocoupler or something. Push the button once, it cycles until the chute is empty, and shuts off.
Would love to have one but here in Sweden all cans here you get money when returned so cant crush them unless i want to waste the money. Dont you return cans and get money back ?
i would like to see the button press controlled by a microchip or something so you do not have to press or even hold the button . maybe a red button could be fitted for saftey
I have a background in automation so given enough money i could make it do anything. The main reason for not being automatic however is that the air line is only connected when the hopper is full as it runs through the middle of my shop and if it were always connected it would be a nuisance
I have worked with Pneumatic rams before but they went much faster. I dont know a lot about them except the ones I worked with. Why is it so slow to actuate? Is there different speeds?
Maybe I missed it but, How long did you cut the plywood round that you screwed onto the piston? I don't see a measurement in the plans either. Awesome build going to try one myself
How did you figure out what Pneumatic ram you needed? shaft length and force? I would like to build something similar but that can accommodate taller cans.

Awesome build. Loved the "Hands in Pockets" rule for the special little helpers, very handy rule. although one hand was slightly pocket-free.
Yes i picked up on that. Very good that he gets his little helpers. Great way to learn stuff.

Nice overall. Really like your straightforward idea for the hopper. Need to search for a vid on how to make that pocket hole cutter.
You always talk about making pocket holes... but how do you fix them? I keep losing my keys because I have holes in my pockets
Very nice build! Maybe some wax on the sides where the can ends catch would make it drop better. Huge kudos on the kid safety!
This guy: "Oh no we wired it backwards, I wanted it to go the other way, dang it."
My dad: "God damn it, we wired the fuckin shit backwards, son of a bitch"
Add a plate to the back of the plunger so when it's extended the cans don't fall in the gap and it works smoother
I had a manual one that used to do that or the can would turn sideways and not work.
That's the best excuse for picking up a couple of six-packs I've ever seen :-)
Great build! Fun to use too! Can be adapted for lemonade, I guess:-)
Aluminum puck melter next?
Maybe Bluto from Animal House wouldn’t have gotten a 0.0 gpa if he had one of these instead of using his head to crush cans.

now you just need a sensor in there that detects when a can is available to be crushed and it can fire off the piston!
My thought exactly! But otherwise a great design.
One question: do the "super special little helpers" also wear sandals in the shop? That's a very cool project. Nice work as always!

Depends on the species in regards to psi necessary to split the wood but the more pressure/capacity the better always.

Waxing the plywood sides of the magazine shoud allow the cans to slide easier into the crush chamber.
