After searching through a bunch of UA-cam videos for a can crusher design, I finally found yours to be the best of all. Works like it suppose to without any problems, thanks, you got another subscriber and a like.
Would love a copy of those plans! I have been looking everywhere for a simple can crusher design. Reminds me of my childhood ❤ Thank you for posting this 😊
thanks! there is a link in the video description that will take you the plans where you can download them. the plans say to use 1/4-20 bolts but that is a mistake. use 3/8-16 instead. they are much stronger. if you build it, i'd love to see pictures. cheers!
I've never known for sure before, but; now, it's clear. This is my absolute favourite UA-cam video that I've ever seen - and I've seen literally dozens of UA-cam videos - and there will never be another like it. And I must also agree, that's a nice little can crusher. ♥
WOW! thank you! and this is my absolute favorite reply that i've ever received! this can crusher isn't the prettiest but it's not meant to be. it's meant to be functional and strong. this design has been working for me for the last....coming up on 10 years now...and RIDICULOUSLY cheap to build. can't get much better than that i'd say. thanks again! cheers!
Thanks for the good video and the plans. Very helpful. I made this for our son and it worked great. But, top handle pivot block takes the brunt of the upward force as the lever is pressed downward and it soon split. It was made from pine and was too soft. I recommend increasing the diameter of the through bolt and using hard maple for the pivot block and adding washers on all sides. Also helpful to glue or screw put a piece of hard board at the bottom of the crusher where it meets the top of the can to extend its life.
Very nice affordable design that many people can make from scrap wood. I always slightly dent the cans myself. Tip: You should drill a couple of vertical holes in the presser block to allow the air to escape from the top of the can. It does make a difference in the ease of crushing a can.
@@CarlBrownJr-f2h there is a link in the video description where you can download the plans for free. also, there is a mistake in those plans. where it says to use a 1/4-20 hex bolt, it should say 3/8-16 hex bolt. 3/8-16 is much beefier. cheers!

I was gonna go buy a can crusher tomorrow, but then I found this video. Suggestion: wrap the handle with some thick twine, then dip it in some Plasti-dip. You'll end up with a slip resistant handle with some texture to hold on to.
Great tutorial! I've really been wanting to build a can crusher for a long time. Only thing is i really wish you had showed the crusher arm assembly. Is there anyway you can make a video of it? Maybe in an updated one? Id really like to see how it was made
thanks! i really appreciate the kind words and constructive criticism. unfortunately, i have just retired from the Navy and am in the process of selling my house and moving out of state so i don't have a shop to work out of right now. hopefully soon though...cheers!
I built this today. Only modification I made from plans was instead of using wood block in front to hold the stomper so it doesn’t come out, I routed a slot down one side and put a screw through the side into the stomper but left it loose so it could slide up and down.
Liked this video very much but I had seen other videos on can crushing where they recommend crushing the can upside down so the air inside can escape. If I were build one of these, I would drill a hole in the bottom of the base for that purpose and see if it isn't easier; i.e. takes less effort to crush a can.
thanks! there is a link in the video description that will take you the plans where you can download them. the plans say to use 1/4-20 bolts but that is a mistake. use 3/8-16 instead. they are much stronger. if you build it, i'd love to see pictures. cheers!
i'm sure it's doable and that would be a cool idea to explore. the point of this particular build though is simplicity. one board, 2 bolts, glue, a handful of screws, and an afternoon.
I made a great big size one that allows me to flatten quite nicely them tall fat boy 32 oncers and aluminum bottles. If you can smash them up and I mean really smash 'em! then you pretty much have a REAL can crusher.
I'd like to scale this up to where it could crush 1 and 2 liter PETE plastic beverage bottles and gallon plastic milk jugs. Only issue is that the bottom plate would have to be steel, so that the neck of the bottle can poke through enough for the user to put the cap back on (otherwise, the bottle just expands again).
I like your design and craftsmanship. I've been wanting to build one but haven't a clue to measurements. I would love to have a set of your plans. Thanks very much.
I need dimension plans please. Our recycling carrier is getting picky and I'm just going to start tossing cans. Space saver for sure. My shop needs this. Thank you.

I wish this could be mounted on a platform with a board in the back and it's a little heavy on the bottom and that way you can sit there and Crush can't that would be cool without mounting it on a wall in the apartment life
that is possible. just use the leftover piece from the 1x4 and screw it to the bottom. then you could clamp that to the edge of a kitchen table or something like that.

all pine except for the handle. i reused the plywood one from the previous crusher. the plans in the video description have all pieces coming from one 1x4 pine board (other than the 2 bolts and the screws, of course).
I built a very similar crusher after watching your video, but because of some mysterious reason my cans while being flattened get pushed out infront, not getting completely flattened
@@RPGWoodworking Yes, I think it is an issue with the foot. I made it with an pivot to the handle, thought it might keep it "more straight". In fact it actually pivots back while pressing down, due to the tolerances in the build, and thus ejects the can. I will try to solve it with some guides maybe, if not just go direct, like in the video.
Hi, can I ask you what you would modify to produce a longer stroke to crush very tall cans? I need a means to handle cans up to 20 cm in height. Is it just a matrer of lengthening the linkage, the piston and raising the arm? Sorry to raise this question so late but I need to keep my materials costs very limited right now. Cheers
that's a good question. as it is, it will handle approximately 18cm so i think you can probably just move the handle pivot blocks up about 2.5-3 cm and move the retention block up about the same amount. just play with the design a bit and see what you come up with. i'd really be interested in seeing it! cheers!
