Big honor to fly the Galaxy. You are very lucky! We used to have C-141s before 2000 at old Athens airport. Now mostly C-17s which are also nice, but C-5 is something else.
@11AviationVideos I was a teenager in the 70's living 10 miles from Norton AFB in San Bernardino California. Every day at 6am, a group of 141s would take off with supplies and 18 year old troops going to Vietnam. At dusk, up to 15 starlifters would come home in V formation over the Inland Empire. It was an amazing site until one day, my dad and I went to the other side of the base to see them up close. I witnessed flag draped coffins being unloaded. I never went back to that side of the base.
Must be at the new airport. I flew C-9s into Hellenikon AFB, from 88-91, when the airport was right beside the Med. Beautiful approach and takeoff...Parthenon and Acropolis always in view. Also have 2500 hours in FRED. Flys like a small plane, but taxiing is a bitch...like moving a building with wings! Good times! God, I miss it!!
In all seriousness, the C5 is a spectacular plane and a marvel. Landing gear turns to retract, and the B52s adjusts to crosswind landing. The engineering that went into the C5 and the B5s is amazing, we applaud all those involved.
Greece is gorgeous. That overpass took the weight of our C5 loaded? Well engineered. Wish we could've pulled Greece as a liberty port when I was Active Duty. Looks like a wonderful place with really decent people. Great video.
I was in the US Navy for 35 years for 25 of those i was in the seals as a sniper me and my ùnit was flown in those c- 5 super Galaxy to all points around the world
I believe all designs by the civil engineers are well past the maximum weights of the aircraft here. Maybe double the weight of the C-5 but definitely able to withstand a fully loaded Galaxy.
Nope. The mighty AN-225 many times passed that bridge. And an AN-225 is 40% bigger than the C-5. (The AN-225 fuel load is heavier than an empty Boeing 747)
I used to live in Athens and never saw planes that big there! Wow thanks for sharing! Also USAF does a lot of patrols or exercises when they take off from Chania on the Greek island of Crete.
I used to ride that C5 on space available during active service. Its like climbing to the 4th floor to get to passenger compartment. Really huge and seating faces rear.
Second C-5 shown conducting an approach and landing with no leading edge slats deployed. This is never considered an normal procedure but clearly an abnormal condition the flight crew was well trained for.
Thank you for sharing this awesome showcase of one of the most awesome military transport aircrafts!!! It always amazes me to watch this behemoth get off the ground and stay in the air! And yes I know the physics behind air travel but it still amazes me. Awesome stuff! Cheers!!!
The weight imit is 400t. A Qantas B747-400ER (Wunalla Dreaming) of 428t taxi over back in 2004. Also an Antonov An-225 taxi once over that bridge! But all cases the planes was not fully loaded so they were within limits.
I see the C-17 Globemaster quite a bit in Colorado Springs, CO but every once in awhile I get to see this absolute behemoth and it's a real treat! Those engines scream like a madman to keep that thing up in the air!
What a wonderful piece of aviation history. It was at one time the largest flying aircraft in the skies. Then the US decided it didn’t have to build anything bigger. We should really return to building modern versions of the Super Galaxy or at least design and build a new updated variant of it. It’s always been an absolute workhorse. You need 2 tanks and 3 Apache helicopters delivered fast the C-5 is your answer. I also miss the beautiful sound of the original P.W. engine. When you heard those you always knew a C-5 was near.
I love C-5 Galaxy.. I have never seen it live... Is there any way i can see C5 In northern virginia... Or are there tours offered where we can get a chance to see these planes? Thanks
AN-124 is a piece of cow dung. This is coming from a C-5 pilot with 2500 hours in FRED. Believe me. Toured one in Cairo during the Gulf War. Cargo compartment isn't even pressurized! Crew has to screw down a submarine hatch to seal off the cargo area before takeoff. Also saw one take off from Kuwait City with 10 feet of the left wing missing...exposed wires and all...I am not making this stuff up. "Safety" is an unknown word to the Russians!
My question is are the motorists slowing down because they're in sheer awe, or because they're a little nervous about driving under that bridge? Lol. Perhaps a little of both.
Have flown on the old C-141-A's to West Germany and back and got to walk through a C-5 at an airshow at Grissom AFB (now Grissom ARB). It's like a Barn with wings!
I always thought it was cool that there are airline seat on the upper deck rear end of the plane above the cargo. Yeah there are a few up front along with bunks for the flight crew. Just always thought that configuration was kinda neat. It was designed that way because they couldn’t put seating over the wings due to the wing spars. They would have had to lift the wings even higher.
Gorgeous, If I were a Billionaire I'd convert one of theses to be my party plane. 7 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, fireplace, movie theater and a BB court, probably have some room left over for my pet elephant
As we are NATO members we have to do so. It is a written alliance. Maybe too complicated sometimes. I cannot tell you much about politics. I am just an aviation fan
If Iwas driving on the interstate highway and saw a behemoth like C-5 crossing over a bridge like shown in the is clip I would pull over and wait until it crossed over and then cleaned out my shorts.
