I was stationed in Guam with the Typhoon Chasers back in 1982. Back then, C-141s and C-5s were prevalent. A C-5 came in one day and had a radar problem. I stupidly volunteered to help the tech take the essentials and his tool bag to the flightdeck. Little did I realize how freakin' far up in the clouds the flight deck was situated. My thighs were screaming by the time we hauled everything up there. This is a huge airplane. I flew to the Philippines several times in one, and the passenger compartment faces aft. It was very humid in Guam in the summertime, so when the a/c was trying to overcome the arid temperatures, it looked as though fog was being purposely pumped into the cabin. I know the Antonov is bigger, but this behemoth will certainly do. The cargo bay is relatively cavernous as well...
Every time I see A-C5 taking off or landing.. I get chills over my body. They are magnificent amazing aircraft. I love the men and women who works hard maintaining this monstrous plane. Especially the pilots who flew them. Am so proud to be an American. God Blessed America and our Military’s who serves and protects our nation’s.👍👏🇺🇸🙏♥️
I'll never forget the first time I set eyes on a C-5A. I had just arrived in Charleston, SC, in 1974 and as I stepped out of my car, a C-5A was passing low overhead, landing gear down. There were trees around my location and it seemed the aircraft filled the visible sky. Okay, my 50 year old memory may have exaggerated that last bit, but not by much. It was overwhelming both visually and audibly. I live near TAFB, and to my knowledge they've never had a C-5A there. Probably the largest aircraft they'e had on the ground was Air Force One.
There is a reason why the C5 was designed as a shoulder pad: -The cargo space is not affected by the continuous wing holster, as it runs above the cabin; -The engines can be suspended under the wings and still have sufficient ground clearance. This prevents too much swirled dust from being sucked in when using semi-paved slopes. This ground clearance is also important for another feature of the Galaxy: To facilitate loading and unloading, the entire aircraft can be lowered via the landing gear hydraulics.
Quite a few hops in the old C5As! Those times are long gone and like the "Vulcan" howl, I miss the C5As screaming GE TF39 engines, even though I'm aware of the increased efficiency of the CF6s
I remembered that a C-5 pilot told that he kept the brake applied at the thresold until all engines were in full power in order to take off in a short runway. Stunning when i heard that.
I used to work at the end of the West runway at Norton AFB back in the late 80's and early 90's. You would hear the sound of those engines and go out to watch them take off. At the East end they would turn around by the golf course, and see the players crouch down. When it took off, you could read the writing under the wheel wells. It was always amazing watching so big fly.
What gives the C5 Galaxy its unique whistling Skilsaw sound? Many use the same engines found on many 747s, 767s, MD11s - GE's CF6-80 - and a couple of Airbus models. None of them sound like that. Older C5's use the TF39, a known screamer but what makes them screech?
"Skilled US Pilot Pushes C-5 Engines to Extreme Limits During Insane Takeoff" Translation: US pilot makes a normal everyday takeoff using a non-extreme thrust setting in a C-5.
correct, ECC (fadac) controlled engines cannot be "pushed to extreme" limits, MTO is the max and the CF-6 engine on the C5 is derated from the engine's true max rated power
The C5 was a design proposed by Lockheed in response to the Air Force request for proposal (RFP). Boeing proposed the 747 and Douglas offered the DC10. Boeing won based on technical offerings. Douglas won based on cost (being cheapest). Lockheed won based on the need to have "Continued production capability" since their production line would shut down and capacity would be lost. The concept of Continued capability was also seen when the DC-10 production ended so the Air Force purchased the KC-10 until the C-17 could be purchased.
On the refuel , why not have a computer link in the refuel arm that sets both aircraft into synced auto pilot upon confirmed connection . That way the pilots get a donut break . :O)
My wife worked in an office located 2000 feet from the end of Stewart NY Air National Guard runway. C-17s took off and landed next to her office. Her company was able to arrange a tour of a C-17 for its employees!!! All of the attending employees had to undergo security checks to be cleared to take the tour.
Flew on F.R.E.D. many times between the USAFE theater and the good ol' U.S. of A. C-141s too, but never over the Atlantic,..only in continent. Always a C-5 between the eats coast and Europe, or vice versa. Sucked a pigeon into an engine on landing at Torrejon, España in 1982. Stiiiiiiiiiinky. Had to stay on the aircraft as the pilot ran the engines up to see if they could clear the "debris" from the pigeon. NOT a pleasant experience. P.U.
Fighter pilot got bored during an escort one day and told a cargo pilot to watch him and he rolled the plane. “How did you like that?” He asked. Cargo pilot said, “Watch this.” 5 minutes later he asked, “How did you like that?” “Like what? I didn’t see anything. What did you do?” Cargo pilot replied, “Used the head.”
Is it really necessary to have all those flickering images at the beginning of the main video? Jeez, it's enough to cause a damn seizure! I will not watch any more because of this....

Air National Guardsmen (& Air Reserve), some of the best Crew Chiefs living. Unlike Active Duty, Air Crews & Crew Chiefs can stay w/a particular aircraft for years, learning & knowing the particular in’s & out’s; instead of being rotated out after only 2-3 years.
BS, I'm 21 years Air Force retired. We learn ten times more than the Guard because we are exposed to a lot more problems of different aircraft. Put them on a different aircraft and they'd piss their pants because they don't know what to do. Plus the Guard would come into our base for 2 weeks every year, mostly just to party. Majority of the tasks and projects they were given to do was only halfway finished or half ass done. We always had to finish the projects and fix all the mistakes they made. Give them a job that should only take a week to do, and they would never finish it. It never failed, every year. Like they say it's a weekend job for them, not their real job.
When you realise what incredible work these people do who serve for us, flying, maintaining and running these aircraft, then compare it to what this idiot Marcus Rashford on 300k per week does at Man U. Makes you think, right? Marcus, take note. These boys are the hero’s not you in your Mansouri Rolls which you trashed.
I spent many years working on the C5, what an awesome display of power!

It's like Texas lifting off into the sky! I love these planes. They're so graceful.
Sweetest sounding engines in all of aviation!

Love the sound of those TF-39's, T43171E Altus AFB 70-79.
When did Altus AFB replace the C-5’s to C-17’s? I use to work out in western Oklahoma and saw a few C-5’s doing T&G at Burns Flat back in early 2000’s
Makes me glad I joined the AF 55 years ago!
56 years ago for me, 1968 Lackland AFB. Can't believe it's been that long ago. A big hello to a fellow Airman.
63 years for me. Lackland August 1961. Keesler AFB Trained in heavy ground radar supporting the SAGE System.

If only there was a way to re-engineer the CF6 engines to maintain their efficiency, while at the same time giving it the old TF39 sound.

NO other aircraft has the same voice as the C-5 Galaxy.

I was a crew chief on KC-135A no one knows the responsibilities and hard the work was. But I loved it and wouldn't have wanted any other job.
All you had to worry about was loading fuel.
The C-5M is like the Beasty Boy of cargo aircraft.

LMAO, my God do you really think you have something intelligent to say,,,,,LMAO.
Spent four years at Kelly in 80's-90's. Used to love seeing the C5 fly overhead from home. It seemed like they just floated in the air.
Kelly A.F.B ! Been there. Close to my home in DelRio Texas. My mom was hospitalized at Willford Hall hospital.

Been there, done that. CSAR. Those are wicke compared to the UH-60 or 47

Nice bit of footage, but again spoilt by over dramatic "Muzak"
Yeah, they're good at that 😆
You could leave out the crappy music

I wonder why there was never a civilian version of the C-5. Either new or reusing retired military C-5’s.
Well now, just because civilians can purchase assault weapons, that does not necessitate the need for military style aircraft...

Wasting public tax money..
You showed a BLACK pilot at the front end of the video but switched to a white man when it was in the air..why?! So unthinking!
Always a numbnut with the race card. So unthinking.
Just political correctness. No black pilots were qualified to fly this aircraft.
