Live in Australia but have been to Nakano three times in the past three months. I could spend days there looking at the huge selection of new, used and vintage watches. I'm a collector of Grand Seiko so it's very satisfying to go to Nakano to see JDM models.
I’ve had only favorable outcomes when dealing with reputable Japanese dealers. I have always felt that their descriptions were accurate and even somewhat conservative. This being said, the viability of a Japanese purchase is also dependent upon the prevailing FX rates. At present, prices for good vintage pieces are generally higher than in Europe or the US, but it’s a far more curated shopping experience. Given the prevalence of vintage Rolex and other brands with non-original or modern replacement parts, paying a premium to go shopping in Japan certainly makes sense for less sophisticated buyers.
I came for the seat selection, I stayed for the watch selection. Austin: "Just be respectful and nice and quiet; that sort of goes for all of Japan." Marcello: "Hold my saké."
I bought my Explorer 1 from Jack Roads in Nakano whilst living out there. Was a good exchange rate at the time. Coupled with it was a few years ago I now have watch that’s over doubled in price 👍
I've been to Nakano twice and bought really nice watches for a good price. I was going for Tag Heuer, Oris, Omega, Seiko and Longines, amazing place. A must!! Austin forgot to mention Bic Camera, nice department store with lots of watches. 👍
‘Be respectful’ what I love about Japan! Thank you Austin. I am headed to Tokyo and looking to buy a watch Thursday. If you’re about and I can buy you a coffee would love youre guidance.
What a great video Austin. I'd love to visit Japan. It is on the top of my list . ( I went to Egypt just before things got bad ) I know it I expense there . Thanks for making this video for David and his wife . For us all .
Invaluable video in case someone plans trip to Japan. That's my case that's why I came back to it after a while. I was just wondering if its always the case that you pay in cash for the watch there? I saw several times customers with piles of cash. Is there any other options as well like PayPal or sth? Many thanks for a useful tip
This is exactly the video I need right now. I love to collect watches, and I will go to Tokyo in a couple weeks. I was wondering if there’s any shop we should worry about which may sell fake watches.
Hey Austin, any reason why you guys don't suggest Shinjuku? I know nakano has a lot, but Shinjuku seemed to be full of great 2nd hand watch shops there as well
great vid. im just finally getting into watches and bought a tag 2017 aquaracer in kansai. what are the websites you use to sell online? Of course there is ebay. any other suggestions?
I'm not too familiar with Vacheron, though I do have great respect for the brand. But when you do decide which one to target: see what's on Rakuten, make a shortlist of perspective pieces, and then hit the shops to check them out in person.
i was gonna come to Japan in Feb 2020. But covid hit and trip cancelled. Im planning to come in 2022 and hopefully buy a rolex there. And if you don't mind give me some pointers and help me out.
Watch so manny of your videos. In Japan for the next 5 days looking to buy a Cartier watch where you recommend? Or do recommend i wait untill i head to Hong Kong?
I'd check out an area of Tokyo called Nakano. Here's a video of how to get there, that I made for a viewer named David a few years back: ua-cam.com/video/gmWlLdgBAZM/v-deo.htmlsi=r7uDIxFEkvbRFvaq

Hi Austin, I am visiting Tokyo soon for work and pleasure. Maybe we can meet up for food and drinks and chat about watches. Do you have an email address I can contact you on?

Fantastic video! It was enlightening to many more people than just David.
It would be cool to get an update on which one he bought, though.

Great advices, enjoy your journey in Japan.
Are tourists allowed to sell a watch to one of these shops in Japan?

Great videos Austin! Will be going to Jack Road at NAKANO this December 2022. Are the prices reasonable there compared to other places for ROLEX?
I love the video! Thanks for making it. Who is David?
This is exactly the video I need right now. I love to collect watches, and I will go to Tokyo in a couple weeks. I was wondering if there’s any shop we should worry about which may sell fake watches.
Do you need to pay cash? Credit card or debit card workable?
What about payment at the shop. Is it better to prior to trip transfer to a JPN account or what ??
Upvoted. Excellent content Austin. This is why you're the OG! Hope you and me will go window shopping in Tokyo one day.
Me too - are you still planning to come in November?
I don't see that happening rn

Sure, no problem, David.
Still believe Hong Kong offers the most comprehensive stock of watches if you know where to go.......and a generally little cheaper than Japan.
Greater possibility of buying a Frankenstein watch in HK.
Where do I go?
Now that yen is 145 to the USD, are watches super cheap like everything else?
Yes, they are. It's a good time to buy if you've got USD!
Happy Anniversary!
I guess this video is considered a watch family colab 🙃

A lot of places here don't take credit card, and only do cash.
Can I buy pre-owned watches without tax?
Yes, tourists can.
Excellent
Did you get a new camera or smtg?
Not yet - just the same iPhone 7 I've had for years.
