Type 2 diabetes can be reversed with an extremely low calorie diet (see my last video: Reversing Diabetes with Surgery nutritionfacts..... And as this video shows, type 2 diabetes can be reversed with an extremely healthy diet, but is that because it was also low in calories? That’s the million dollar (death?) question that I answer in my next video: Diabetes Reversal: Is it the Calories or the Food? (nutritionfacts..... Hold onto your hats, it’s going to be quite a doozy!
I’ve touched before at the ability of healthy diets to both prevent (Plant-Based Diets and Diabetes nutritionfacts....) and treat (Plant-Based Diets for Diabetes nutritionfacts....) type 2 diabetes. It’s so exciting to be plugging in the final puzzle pieces.
What about the benefits of blood sugar medications and more moderate diets? When Drugs & Diets Don't Lower Diabetes Deaths (nutritionfacts.....

I'm type 1 diabetic and can testify to the power of plant based diets. I increased my insulin sensitivity by 300% with a high carb, low fat, low protein, high fibre, whole food, plant based diet.

Guys, it works. And we can eat as much as we want. We just have to emphasize (or restrict ourselves to) certain foods - unrefined plants. Particularly high nutrient low calorie ones - greens (lettuce, kale, broccoli), non starchy veggies (onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, cauliflower), beans, and fruit. And some starchy veggies, whole (intact) grains, And some nuts and seeds. Unlimited fruit! Small amounts of nuts and seeds. We can even have a small amount of animal foods or refined plant foods (less than 10% of total calories - not much - but we don't have to completely give up something, if that's a sticking point). (The 10% isn't necessarily what's best for optimal health or what's maximally ethical, but just an allowance, so we don't get freaked out and not even do what we can.) You can choose how healthy you want to be. I think as healthy as possible is a good choice, but even eating 50% of your calories from whole plant foods should cut your heart disease, cancer, and dieabetes progression in half. And that's very significant. Obviously 90% sounds much better, but if it's a choice between 50% (or whatever) and none, go for as much as you can. One thing though, it can actually be easier to give up junk food by giving it up entirely. When you only eat healthful foods, and don't eat addictive junk foods, your taste buds improve, and cravings go away. It's why AA recommends not drinking at all. It's easier. And conversely trying to have a drink once in a while would cause a lot of recovering alcoholics to completely relapse. It's not really a good goal. But, again, if it's a sticking point, shoot for 90%. Don't use, "I can't give up _____" as an excuse to not eat as much healthful foods as you can. In practice, you can eat the healthful ones first, and then if you still want to eat the junk food later. It's like, I'll stay sober today, and if I want to relapse tomorrow, I'll do it then. It gets you through the day. And after a good nights sleep (maybe a meeting or whatever), it might not seem important the next day. Run the gambit, large salad, bean chili, frozen mango blended into a a sorbet - I mean you might be pretty satisfied after a healthful feast. Secondly, if you still eat the junk, you might eat less after stuffing yourself on healthful foods. I think the main thing, more than unhealthful cravings, is simply knowledge and practice. You have to do it for awhile, before you know what to make, and before you get used to it. Watching yourself get leaner, and watching symptoms of diseases go away, and getting off medication, don't exactly hurt motivation, either. Embrace it.

Swapped to a Plant Based Whole Food diet because of my partner's heart problems and with my medication my HbA1C dropped to 5.8 and so I came off one of my drugs - initially the plan was to do it slowly with lots of blood sugar monitoring but when my measurements were coming out critically low - I took myself completely off the sulfonuryl I was taking - telling my diabetologist and checking three times daily that things did not creep up again. I have had the odd spike when I was ill and didn't take my medication etc. but otherwise I have been in the "green" zone - what my app on my phone considers "healthy".

+Smudgemom2003 Well, it's limited to less than 10% of calories in conjunction with any processed grains, or oils, so it's pretty clearly not something you want to eat more of. But a diet consisting of mostly unprocessed fruits, veggies, and beans is going to be very healthy compared to a pure vegan diet consisting of oil and pasta. The question of of what's optimally healthy would suggest further limiting animal foods and processed foods.

My mom and dad both had a stomach reduction surgery because otherwise they die, obviously. Both diabetic, etc. They now 'fixed' the 'problem' of not 'getting enough food' by eating more callory dense food, more often. *forehead slap*. I'm going to lose my folks. What can i do. They just keep packing in even worse garbage and more often and wonder why their expensive surgery on our collective input hasn't worked. I would totally vote for a rule that says, if you don't manage to get healthy and lean after X amount of time after surgery, (excluding any mental or genetic issues, of course) you will have to pay back the medical bill yourself. Lets see how many people suddenly get the message.
This is not about 'fat shaming', it's about the extreme rise in medical and societal costs. My medical insurance now almost costs as much as my *rent* every month and it's *mandatory*, we don't *get* a choice in Europe. My generation is being financially *decimated* by the previous generation, sitting in their fat cars, and giant homes, eating a kings meal 5 times a day, see a doctor twice a week and our generation can't even afford ourselves the *basics*, never mind wanting to start a family, because life.... just costs too much. Think about it. I'm healthy and lean but i pay for all of this. Plus... my folks are going to die way before their time. Just waiting for the phonecall... any day now. I won't be surprised and i won't cry. I grieve over them every day already. I'll just shake my head and move on with my day. Such a shame there is no sensible, long term follow-up and nutrition counseling for these people. All of it has gone to waste and it's not something they can repeat. They had one shot at it, they missed. I can't even eat their food. Everything she cooks is brown, stuffed with meat and sauce and overcooked vegetables and starch is 'bad for you and makes you fat', mmhmm, yeah....
Thank you sincerely, Dr. Greger, for enlightning the rest of us.
Preventive diet is the way forward in medicine.

+melovescoffee You know I too had a parent that was non compliant. I think after leaving behind an abusive childhood, followed by an abusive first husband she decided anything after that would be heaven and that she was "in control" of whatever she wanted to eat. Control, yes. Good judgement in using that control, no.
While she had a triple heart bypass early on in her early 40s, I somehow found the inspiration and motivation to change my own health around. Sometimes the blending in of that was a challenge for me. Sometimes this was more with my beliefs (why isn't she taking responsibility for her health, why isn't she aware of what she's doing to herself) than my actions (cooking my own food my own way, etc).
Sadly she passed away from a heart attack after increased fight with diabetes (non compliant diet, weight gain and three amputation surgeries on her left leg).
Near the end my father began taking small steps, eating some of my food.
I played the gentle, silent yet present healthy food eater.
As i detached myself from the result, he eventually started eating more and more healthy and is mostly plant based.
While I was sad that my mother chose her path this way, I still am so happy that i didn't let that difference (of choice) draw us apart.
Hold tight and keep being the light.

I am living proof that Type 2 Diabetes can be reversed. My heaviest recorded weight was 276 lbs. I just now weighed myself, 170.6 lbs. Along the journey of sweating off the pounds I have cured myself of diabetes, high blood pressure and maintain cholesterol levels my physicians are envious of.
My commitment to riding my bicycle as much as possible, instead of driving a motor vehicle, was a huge factor in my success, but that's another story. I changed my diet as well and in the span of a couple of years was pronounced to be non-diabetic. I haven't tested my blood sugars in years.
I never used any medication for diabetes.
Since then I have made more changes, avoid wheat of all kinds, my diet is now primarily (90%+) vegan and I shun processed foods. I have a cooked yummy porridge for breakfast and the rest of my meals tend to be raw salads - made from scratch of course, and fruit, nuts and seeds.
I do eat other things occasionally, including meat.

best I can find from the study: Foods are rated based on total micronutrient content per calorie, which emphasizes consumption of greens and other non-starchy vegetables, such as onions, mushrooms, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, and cauliflower, in unlimited quantity. High glycemic, high carbohydrate foods are reduced, while beans, peas, squash and intact grains are permitted. Nuts and seeds are the primary source of fat, while animal products are limited to 10 percent of calories or less. Basic recommendations include:
      1) At least one large green salad a day, with inclusion of a nut/seed derived salad dressing.
      2) One bowl of vegetable-bean soup daily.
      3) 1 - 2 ounces of raw seeds and nuts daily (usually in salad dressing recipe).
      4) Approximately 3 - 4 fresh fruits per day.
      5) One large serving of steamed or stewed greens, with mushrooms, onions and other low-starch veggies.
      6) Only one serving a day of non-bean starch, such as squash, steel cut oats, brown/wild rice.
      7) Exclusion of white flour, sweets, and oils, while limiting animal products to 12 ounces per week.

I still have to read, research, read... so much, I am doing everything to help my husband who was diagnosed with T2D, never thought it will come to our home. Well, we work in South Korea, and the Doctor would not speak English, so, after they gave us the whole package who knows what, I am sure the right prescription drugs for taking it twice a day and we were asked to come back in three months. Can you imagine?! Well, the first things we did, we prayed and gave thanks to the LORD for He is Good and all things work together for the good of those who love the LORD! First I came across a video on Diabetes association in the UK. Read a lot...Discovered things I never thought exist... Well, now I pray for all the sick around the world knowing what people are going through. We started eating (myself included) LCHF diet, not exactly a diet but close to that. I do still eat sometimes bagels with cheese for breakfast.
My husband lost 20 KG since then, did not start any physical exercises yet. When going back to the Endocrinologist after I think two months not three... she was amazed and said (suddenly she spoke English) whatever you do keep doing it, it works. Well, my husband still takes the prescription drugs - twice day -(still we do not know what are they) they put them into separate sealed plastic and you receive them before leaving the hospital We need to go back in a week!!! We monitor the glucose in blood every other day. It is in range of 103-107 (US).
I just want to thank every one of you who cares and gives their precious time to help those in need. Your work will not go unnoticed. We are thankful!
So grateful that I came across Dr Andreas, Dr Michael on Twitter, and now your work.
    With gratitude!

My father in law just had his leg was due to infection caused by diabetes...but that's not the worst part. In addition to ignoring the scores on his leg, his feet had been numb for a while. While he was sleeping his little dog nawed off his toes. He woke up...that's when he finally went to the doctor. Evidently the infection was so bad to his dog, his toes smelled like rotting meat. No joke. I literally just found this out an hour ago. He's 72 years old.

Have you guys ever heard of judging a study by not just whether it works, but by whether people do the diet. For example, I heard a critique (I believe by Campbell of Fuhrman) that said he should include people he counseled but that did not follow the diet. That sounds strange. I guess then you're testing both the efficacy of the diet and whether people will follow it based on counseling, but I think, for the people who actually want to follow it, they'd be interested in how well it works - I mean if you actually follow it. I think we can all agree that listening to motivational speeches about exercising isn't going to anything for us if we don't go exercise. I suppose we could measure whether they actually motivate people.

I would recommend you review the carbs seriously. Carbs like Rice, wheat, etc are over processed. Ensure More of Fresh/Whole Foods. Also, your 113 is it 2hours post meal? If that is the case it isn’t so bad to be alarmed.

Go join any keto or low carb Facebook group. Search A1C. Virtually all of the people on low carb diets for about 3 months or more have also lowered their A1C to non-diabetic numbers. So again, Mr. Greger, why the recommendation for no animal products? Why the dogma?

Let's not recommend foods to diabetics that are toxic to the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas.

Because in his theory avoiding carbs and eating mainly fat is not a cure. They lowered A1C because they avoided carbs. Avoiding the pool because of phobia for water is not a cure to the phobia. The cure must be such that the person is able to overcome the phobia and swim perfectly.
For a cure, the person must be able to return to eating carbs again without any health risks or adverse reactions.

Hello Doctor I am going to college to become a RD is that a good job field to enter and what are they daily tasks no one has been able to answer that for me.

    • @avolovo
      @avolovo 8 років тому

+Xavier Johnson I volunteer at the nutrition department in a hospital and know a few RDs there.
Whether that is a good job field or not is up to you.
They do paperwork, meet with ill patients to talk about their diet (their preferences). Doctors ultimately decide their diet (renal/CHO 1800-200/Regular/Liquid/etc.), which sucks in my opinion.
You will have to know science really well and have excellent memorization skills (I am applying for nutrition food and science in my college).
So try to volunteer in a hospital where there are RDs and ask them questions.

I got excellent news today. I had my 90-day update on my blood test for diabetes after my 1st diagnosis and I no longer have it. The results are even better than what I was measuring with my glucose meter.
    6/12/2023
    >Hemoglobin A1c 5.1 % (Estimated Average Glucose 100 mg/dL (65 - 153 mg/dL normal)
    3/10/2023
    >A1c 8.9% (Estimated Average Glucose 209 mg/dL (65 - 153 mg/dL normal)
I had a lot of stressors that may have triggered high glucose and insulin intolerance. I had kidney stones, 2 root canals, crooked spine and sciatica, so a lot of inflammation. To comfort the way I was feeling I became addicted to sugary drinks and I spiraled downward. Fortunately, it was such a short period I don't think I caused any permanent damage. My eyes tested fine and the neuropathy I had in my left hand is lessening. My stones have been removed and my root canals are done.
I'm basically eating the way I ate before I got Kidney stones in Nov 2022, but I've added more healthy fat and less carb content. I eat mostly Whole-Food Plant-Based SOS (minimal Salt, Oil, Sugar) and minimal grains. I also do intermittent eating with 2 meals a day.
I have not lost any weight, but I've reduced inflammation and last week got my kidney stones removed, so it's not lower due to that. Having a glucose meter tied to my Fit Bit made a big difference in managing my diet. I didn't take Metformin for the 1st 2 months, but started taking it due to spikes after taking antibiotics. I will be weaning off Metformin and hope to start losing weight as I am obese.

Some studies have shown meat eaters who consume fruit and veg, but specifically lowered their red meat, have less incidences of diabetes. I have seen studies which have shown vegetarians to suffer more cases of cancer, allergies, mental disorders and a host of diseases more than meat eaters. My point? There are many factors involved, not just diet! Environment, quality of any food, sleep, exercise, stress management and exposure/elimination of toxins.

    • @AstralS7orm
      @AstralS7orm 8 років тому +1

+Michael Campion Yes, therefore you should do nothing, since you cannot control all factors. Right?
Also I'd like to read those studies you mention, otherwise it's not a point, but an opinion.

If you would have read the study, you would see that it does provide the alternative explanation that vegetarians in Austria often switched to the diet because they were sick. It warrants a longitudinal, not cross-sectional study.

+Zack F Who all had fantastic results. All. 100% efficacy. And major improvement. By the way, these people, never improve. And, while decreasing medication (or eliminating it). Come on. This is highly significant. Agree, it should be followed up. But you're just looking for an excuse if you say 13 and use that as an excuse for ignoring this finding.
