This guy is the definition of “take what you got, and go where you want”
Really enjoyed this one, nice to see something out of the ordinary, creative, and didn't cost an arm and leg.
You didn't check for kidneys or liver... ;)
One of the best cars I'd ever owned. Had a Leone Royale 1.8mpi . Brilliant little car . Bought mine new in '89 & sold in '94.
Can’t tell what the weather is like 😂
Ronny - Boots, long pants, top with vest.
Subbie owner - Thongs, shorts and T-shirt
south australians don't feel the cold mate... it was still peak summer for us when the video was shot hahah
LOL
thongs tshirt n shorts definitely tasmanian lol
Oh the memories! I had the same wheel and tyre size on mine. With only a 2 inch body lift and 2 inch suspension 😂 had to lop another 3 inches out of the guards to stop em scraping.
Hi Alex, as soon as I saw this review I thought it was yours, well sort of
This was my first car in the US. 1985 Subaru Loyale 4WD. Manual transmission, manual transfer case with low range... lasted to 350Kmiles, then rotted away in the salt. lovely.
Yes! Same but an '87 GL wagon. I think it did 285k HARD miles then I blew the heads and sold it. Saw it driving around 3 years later (still with my bumper stickers on it is how I know).
I'll never complain about my 15L/100km again lol. Epic build and great to see something different!
also, me i laughed hard when i had 20L/100k wow.
I used to have a Subaru wagon, the model older than this.
Probably one of the least capable 4WDs you can buy, but I did the body lift, fitted mud tyres, welded the rear diff, etc.
It was great fun to drive and did all the tracks at Jakem and other local places easily. The best part of driving it was the looks of confusion I would get when it went somewhere that their Patrol or Cruiser could not.
While my Cruiser now is better in almost every way, the Subaru cost 1/10th of the price to buy and build.
This guy rocks! Certainly does not follow the general off-road crowd in what makes a rig cool as hell, as well as functional. Too cool!
Good to see a budget car. Nowadays four wheeling becomes all about fancy modification and spending way too much money. We all almost forgot this is how it been in the past. Good job.
Why don't you test drive a new jimny ? :)
Seems everyone is testing driving the new Jimny
Been done to death
But, an older Suzuki Sierra, now they punched above their weight
@@mountainconstructions no one did a proper offroding test drive non of them were true offroders . I am planning on buying one to support my 79 series. Old samurai is still winning offroding races in srilanka. These small SUVs with ladder frame chassis will last for ever. And easy to navigate around our national parks.
You obviously have looked hard enough
I was watching one being tested hard last night on YT
@@mountainconstructions isn't a Jimny 25K new? At 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of comparable capability 4WD "doing it to death" is understandable.
One of the best modified yet. I was waiting for Ronny to adjust his fly when he appeared from the grass.
I had a L Series with the high roof like a 60 series Sahara? Can't remember the name. Maybe Tourer? Great luttle car. Jacked up the suspension bigger wheels & tyres with flares. Really fun & very capable little 4wd.
Actually a 2 inch body lift probably would have stopped my tyres scrubbing
I drive a troop carrier but full respect to this rig. It's awesome he's done this build for $6k, some blokes with big 4wd's would blow that just on say, spotties and wheels
Subaru’s are big in the U. S. but they typically have independent rear suspensions. Good turbocharged 4 cylinder petrol engines and decent all wheel drive systems.
Weekend warriors for sure.
I live in Adelaide as well, didn't know how rare they are until after I stumbled my way into one
Love this car, I had an '87 GL Wagon (in the US) even stock they are so capable. Heavy bash plates stock, Low Range transfer case stock. Even without lockers could go a lot of places because they are so light. Long time ago now but a great car.
Neat wagon! This guy wasn’t afraid to use his imagination. With that body lift, it looks like the engine was pulled!
I owned an L-Series as my first car. Best Picnic Wagon you can buy. I'd frequently head past bogged cars on Tim's Thicket or Whitehills chuckling. Choose the right line, adequate tyre pressure and you can get pretty far, even followed a mate in his Nissan through the Captain Fawcett Track in Dwellingup one winter, made it through, but that was a little hairy. Great work Ronny and Adam.
I love these. Everyone had these in FNQ where I grew up - you knew when the neighbours would be coming home cos you could hear the CV's going down the road lol. Being late to the Scubie game my parents got a Gen 1 Forester, was still an awesome car though.
These engines are incredibly reliable, so much so that people take them out and power their airplanes with them.
My first car on my red P's in 2004 was an 86 Subaru Sportswagon and I loved that car to death. The CV joints are what sent that one to the grave. You've made me want to look for another but like he said they are a rare find these days.
Ronny showing some #subielove ! How awesome is that ?!
I really loved this one !
I knew you'd be on here ;)
@@HudsonZRoamer Hehe of course 😁
This takes me back to the days when i started 4wding in one of these. Good stuff
Needs a mightycarmods sticker! lol
What a fantastic job you've done with that classic Subie Adam! Very well thought out setup and you've proved to the rest of us that you don't need a cruiser or patrol to get out there and enjoy our beautiful country. Those L series are bloody tough cars and reliable. My old boss had one when i was an apprentice. It never stopped. Well done mate you've done well with that and you seem like a genuine bloke who doesn't concern himself with having the best of the best but enjoy the same pleasures as everyone else. I see so many people so focused on their equipment instead of just enjoying the bush. All the best to you mate!
The ol' Subies do just fine with a little bit of lift -leaving the big rigs stuck in the mud.
Awesome build, those old girls are just about a classic now. I'd love to do a Forester
On my second Forester build. Lots of fun.
Like seeing the oddball vehicles.
Would like to see a Jimny/Samurai/Sidekick again.
Love this! Good to see the older Subies, they had all the awesome factory goodies.
Many of us with the modified Foresters and outbacks wouldn't typically use anywhere near the 20L per 100 he is and I anticipate once he EJ converts it id expect him to drop to 12L per at worst if not closer to 10s.
I’m consistently getting 11-12/100 in my EJ22 and lifted L series. Mine is true AWD with the centre difflock. From the interview this L has the standard full time 2wd box with part time hi/Lo 4wd - which would make it a 3.7:1 diff ratio.
A set of early ‘90’s Honda Accord/civic/prelude front springs in the rear will get rid of that saggy butt we see in the video ;)
@@ElFreddoAndRubyScoo so does prado struts :) ours has a set of prado fronts from like 2015 model and its crazy how the back is :)
@@EDXR61993 I've got a set of prado struts "waiting" to go in with the honda springs. Did these struts change the rebound and compression dynamics, or did they lift the rear end too? Honda springs have done very well for the last 9 or so years!
@@ElFreddoAndRubyScoo with the whole car riding king springs front and rear std height with brand new front and rear shocks 3 inch lift on khumo kl71s 27x8.5R14s it rides a little like a willys jeep in the front rear felt alright in the rear
@@ElFreddoAndRubyScoo also lifted the back nicely
Wow. Ronny WA has some of the most lifted Subaru’s in the world. I have an 06 Impreza with a 1” strut spacer, trimmed fender flares and a 06 Forester Struts 215-75-16 with all terrains tires. I loved that thing. Took it to 250ml. I’m surprised you haven’t showed more newer Subaru’s. All you have to do is Google it there are thousands of lifted Subaru’s. With amazing after market mods, lifts, bars. Thanks Ronny.
Awesome to see the old L series getting some appreciation. If you know how to use them they are a very capable car off road. Rear LSD just makes them even better. I'm getting another one soon.. 😁
Mad respect from Phoenix AZ, I'm diggin this badass rig !
Steve Dupree cheers bud
good to see something different, did he say 20 L/100km wow I don't feel bad driving mine now.
Loved this. Great to see people using their brains more so than their wallets
I have a 1987 subaru station wagon and I love it, greetings from Costa Rica!!!
Go SuBaroo! (I know that it's Subaru😜!) I have Always wanted to do that to my various Subees'! I have had 4; 1)'80 GL wagon, 2)'79 ? wagon, 3)'85(?) GL wagon, 4)'89(?) Legacy.
If you're ever in Vic or on the east coast I'd love to show you my '90 Brumby. Same tyres as this beast, but only with a 2" body lift. Made it work, and shes a fun little budget adventure vehicle/daily
Nice to see another build that didn't cost a small fortune 👍
This was a fantastic vid to watch. Love to see an old L series getting some exposure. Love to show you mind some time - EZ30R H6 converted L series offroader. 12000lbs winch. Supercharger going on soon.
Do you have a build blog or instagram?
Absolutely glorious. When I first saw the thumbnail I was wondering if Alex from InTentsOffRoad had run a stealth mission on us and secretly modded his old 'Brew.
Been waiting for this Modified. It's great to see something a bit different.
I have one of these but much closer to standard, 2inch body lift and big profile highway tyres, built specifically for sand with lots of focus on keeping the weight down. I have mostly light weight hiking camping/cooking gear, insulated 12v cooler rather than a big fridge, lithium second battery. It's the best surf getaway car I've had and still stays between 7 -11 litres per 100km. Mine effortlessly rolls across soft sand but it's not heavy or powerful enough to rescue the bigger cars at the beach unfortunately. I wish there were a lightweight revolution with 4x4's, I can never go back to the 2 tonne plus category again.
awesome build Adam, certainly do the job, great review Ronny
mad video man I've got a silver wagon its a 91 GL model, this video is a huge help I'l defiantly be doing a body lift instead. funny how yours runs hot, mine doesn't go over 60c and I'm up in Queensland. skits build mate, great to see some good subie love on these old beasts!
Havent seen a Subie like for a long time, good to see something different.
tks Ronny... its very inspiring... now we can start overlanding with a budget wise... good job
So off to Cape York then guys? Oh go on.
Great video. And great local beer choice.
I’ve been wondering when you would get to a Subie. I’ve had great fun in my XV Crosstrek off road, and been waiting for your video on off-roading with a stock compact SUV or CUV. Thanks for this one for those of us who are truckless day trippers and weekenders.
What a ripper Ronny, the ol Subie
20L/100km, wow
Subaru life
Makes me feel better about my 3t overloaded and lifted falcon Ute with a tall Ali canopy getting 15L/100km
Need to get a Forester on here now!
I hate the "built not bought" phrase, like, bro? did you not buy the parts to build up the vehicle? did you manufacture them all yourself? YOU BOUGHT THE PARTS! IT'S BOUGHT!
s 9 I fully agree with you there ! I’m like Champ, did you build that car from the ground up!? You a parts fitter not a builder.
Not my cup of tea but its Good to see something different I'm impressed 👌
This is awesome! I’m actually looking at a stock 92 and considering on buying it
6" Body lift, it's massive :) GJ
love this! my dad had one of these .. then he got me one as my first car also my older brother had one. so had 3 in the family. their cv joints go without any lifts at all and had the same problems with the radiator. still got one at home that hasnt seen any use for about .... 10 years me and my brothers thrashed it around home so wonder how it will go. thinking of fixing it up after watching this... fuck spending 6k on it tho haha
A good piece Ronny.
I have showed up some of the big boys in mine, only 2" lift and 27" tyres but in the right conditions the light weight is a huge advantage. He didn't mention the comfort factor though, or lack of it, sometimes I wish I had a kidney belt.
That's strange and cool I had a 4wd turbo Leone when I was 19 no 4wd low though
Wow that was different 👍
THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER GREAT DETAIL VIDEO
THANK SHOW 4WD SUBARU AS DID GREAT JOB BUILD 4WD WAGON
Fozroamer was here. RIP
BRILLIANT! FIRST COOMENT!
Ronny could you please review a toyota hilux surf (4runner in the states)? Thanks! Also great content love your channel.
Yeah the Subi!
I have seen / heard of L series people going towards the EJ22 turbo engines, would be worth a look
Also heard of fitting 31s with body and suspension lift by making diff drop brackets
great
Cool car the coole part is he is drinking a Mexican Beer in What ever part of the world they are Corona Nice
I can see the comment section lighting up over that lift haha
I went to The Flinders Rangers with Adam.i went in a bt 50
Haha I went from a rooftop tent to a swag
fuck yeah luv the old subys well done mate had 3 of these but got a hilux now haha!
Nice to see something different. Do you have any early Forester builds? Keep up the great work.
Land N Sea Adventures not as yet
@@Ronny_Dahl Thanks mate I'll look forward to seeing it
Would love to see a d23 episode
Cool little rig
Damn, I learned to drive on one of these things
you should talk to (Mr Subaru ) Paul Kinnear, Ronny i believe he's based in Clare these days
Hello,
I wonder how the shift levers are solved. Are they just extended?
I also have such a Subaru, only for offroad purposes.
Hence the original engine gone, weak. I have a 2.5 from a Subaru Outback, I already have a lift there, but I would like it higher. So I'm interested in sorting solutions.
Thanks a lot and have a nice day! :)
I like this kind of budget build. But then I’ve toured Europe in a £700 Frontera. He’d be better off putting the wheel back on top of the engine and cutting the bonnet for clearance. Would only need a small power bulge with the engine being 6 inch lower.
A real rippa!
Sweet to see a Subi on here. MtnRoo Brotherhood.
Got a dead stock one of these and they're fine if you leave them alone. I'd be screwed if I put big tyres on mine! Nearly run out of torque in low 1st as it is on some steep pinches.
How big was your suspension lift mate? When you were snapping cv’s.
Donald Duck 2 inch lift
Hello my name is Tony from el salvador nice car l have Subaru d l 89
Please do an ln106 hilux
Awesome video
What does it do?
"Yep"
I own one of these and it's pure stock, brought it from an older gentleman so been looked after. I am planning on modding it to be a bit more capable such as the one in this video, my main question is where did you get the roof racks from? I can't seem to find them anywhere! thanks in advance.
thirstiest 1.8 I've heard of
Hahaaahahahahaha
He walks out of the shrubs laughing 😅
This is proof the pandemic has hit everyone !
Ronny is stuck doing modified episodes .......
on a subaru 😫
Awesome video, Would be nice to see if there is one what would be the aussie solution for a rav4.
How many inches of suspension lift do you have in the shock absorbers and in the chassis please I want to modify my subaru and yours has a good lift greetings
How about a newer model Forrester like a 04 to 07 series, saw that there are a few there in upside down land :D
Love the car mate. Where did you get your body lift from? I've found some 4-6" lifts in the USA but nothing over 2" in Aus?
This sick love it ! Keep it up ! :)
I've seen a couple lifted Foresters here in the States and thought they were awesome and capable looking but kinda thought that without a lowrange were gimmicky. Maybe I'm wrong.
Some of the early foresters had low range. People mod them for lower gearing, selectable 4WD and even an ARB air locker can be fitted in the rear with some modification.
20L per 100km!
Nice bro
Lada Niva next please
