Sure they do and you know it ! For example, it took at least 6 attempts for the green Land Rover to pass the ravine at 11:15 but only 2 attempts for the grey Forester.... If you have more footage of that day, I'm keen to see it !
I would say the Foresters really gave a good match to the Defenders. One striking difference is the tyres, the Defenders both had 100% offroad tyres, just helps out a lot. But hey the Defenders are built for offroading, but oh my, try driving them on the road 😅 Subaru sg 2005, 2.0 n/a with dual range gearbox, 2" lift front, 2,5" lift back, 225/70r15 Yokohama Geolandar is what I drive, fantastic car onroad and offroad 🤙

Really cool seeing the Foresters along with the Landys. The white dccd quaife low range model seems to struggle more than I expected. A trick I learned with the torque biasing diffs (quaife, torsen etc) is all wheels need resistance to bias the torque. Rav4 boys tug the handbrake on a little to resist the spinning wheel so if you drag the brake it'll keep drive to all wheels. Tricky with a clutch also I know but something to consider. Super cool trip and beautiful countryside 😊
Great Video, I bush bashed a 2000 forester round Australia for years. I just had all terrain tyres and lifted springs. I am not sure if the Aussie models are different spec, but in the non-turbo we had low range and I am not sure if the diff's are different but I never had it spinning a single wheel like that, even with only two wheels on the ground, it was always like it had lsd's in all 3 diffs. Vincent Windels Sorry, I didn't mean it never spun the wheels at all, I spun them plenty, but those are spinning one wheel and losing drive, maybe just too hard on the throttle. I never spun a single wheel that hard and lost drive, but I did kill the viscous centre diff after a while. I have an outback and that has open diffs. Because of the viscous hub you can still power out with one wheel in the air because it will transfer drive to the back or front. If you have two wheels in the air then your in trouble. In most cases you can roll back and get three back on the ground and still push through. A locking rear diff would be good if you can get one.

Now I saw what a Forester is capable of. Not that I shall do it that way. Don't worry. Good luck and have fun.
This makes me miss my 2000 forester. It was a great car. Sure, it's not as good off road as my TJ or even my F150, but it is better at everything else than the TJ. Lol They're great for traction, garbage for gearing, bad for clearance, but generally long lasting.
I own a 97 sahara and just bought my wife a new Outback. If these videos are any indications.... I believe that outback will embarrass me. I think it time to invest in lockers for my jeep..... Or a forrester. By the way, great video.
Ahahaha, you made me laugh ! The Outback is pretty good too, except for the approach and departure angles. But Jeep's are good too ! Thank you for your comment !
But our Suubies have a low center of gravity with the boxer engine and a longitudinal transmission, My wifes 10 Impreza I believe could go most places with a good eye on your lines of approach and a heavy foot!
I literally had to use my 01 outback to pull an F-350 with a 5th wheel trailer hooked to the back up a hill. Our driveway is a long uphill and it was covered in snow. There was no way that truck could have made it. My Subaru pulled it up from a dead stop just fine. They're badass cars.
@@neomorina9506 It really seems like any newer subaru with the CVT trans is not nearly up to what the older ones can do. I don't think there is anything you can do to the newer ones to make them better off road besides a lift and tires.
I am in Africa, this is the first REAL off-road test I have ever seen. This is really a safari terrain. All those other off-road reviews marketing SUVs, should do similar; otherwise, it's a raw deal of testing or demonstrating capabilities to potential clients/ customers.
@@ALNSMOVERLAND Good old geared 4wd without all the electronic crap to play or burn out. Subs had so many different awd systems going at one point depending if your car was manual or auto or sporty. You need to say what system you have.
It really does highlight the fact they're just toys when it comes to off-road. I say this as a 2017 XT owner, they're great cars but they don't belong in the bush.
Man I do not miss abusing the clutch to get over obstacles. Most of us in the US use Automatic gearboxes because of the lower gearing and being able to load up the torque converter to get over obstacles. Dual range gearboxes from Subaru are rare here in the US.
Hey trying to find out more about Forester 4 wheel drive system. Looks to me that as long as they've got wheels on ground they re unstoppable, only problem is when you go on a twist... Can you manually lock the center diff? Front and rear diffs should be free as long as i've understood. So ever thought about fitting an aftermarket lock to rear diff? Does it exist? Do you have low gear on yours? Haven't catch a video where you use it yet. Thanks for reading this, keep rockin!
Thanks mate! You are right, with all wheels on the ground they are unstoppable! 🔥 Center diff lock exists and it's called DCCD, probably a future upgrade for my foz 😉 I do have a low range which is very helpful on the trails. Limited slip diff exists and rear diff auto locker (torQ locker)
@@ALNSMOVERLAND Hey I finally bought an Outback year 2002, tested it a bit in the summer. Considering buying the torq self locking diff for the rear. Do you have experience with that? About the factory low range is ok but coming from a Pajero i'd like it to be much shorter. Are you using the factory low gears or you went for an aftermarket solution? I went searching on the tactifoz specs ;) but haven't seen that. Thanks for posting that list! I'm going thru the items and the brands.
I'm amazed the foresters got over that stream! Well impressed! I'm buying a 2012 this weekend , are they of a similar stock to the ones you are driving here? Pretty sure I'll end up putting a lift kit on it fairly quickly!
Those damn foresters are inpossible , I just can't wait till mine is back from workshop and I will be able to start working on it. I hope until july I will be pushing some offroad stuff too! I think forester beats landrover coz you just can't drive landi on normal road like a normal car going up to 160 km/h on tarmac plus fuel consumption is much lover and parts cheaper. Love your vids mate. Keep up the good work!
lexxuzz Thanks a lot ! I really appreciate 🙌 You are right, you can't beat the versatility of the foz ! It's so comfortable for long roadtrips. I hope yours gonna be back on the road soon !
you need more lift on green subby outback, her belly is draggin through mud lifting tires off road. Thats why she had hard time on mud bog. thanks for video.
I realize this video is about a year old now, just wondering how long your suspension held up after all this fun you had! I'm trying to decide on my next vehicle, I don't drive over anything as rough as you did but I drive over pothole filled dirt roads every day, as well as interstate and around town, about 100 miles or more a day. Thanks for any info you can provide!
Hi Karen ! Yes, that's an old video now ahaha Well, all I can say is that my struts are all fine ! They are from Pedders 😉 So even going hard like this, you don't have to worry about it !
Wow, that was quite rough going in places, adding spacers on the foresters is useful as protects arches better in ditches and helps stability, good lift of 3 or 4" and bigger tyres to compliment is a must too to save damage and fight those landrovers more evenly matched . I think you wise go around couple of those stages as could of damaged the fozz as yours more a 50/50 road and offroad plus your daily wagon. Is impressive where they will go, custom suspension and better rear diff and they will scare a landrover . Being narrow they good in woods and overgrowing tracks .
Once getting that rough they need modding beyond basic lift blocks, 3 or 4" suspension lift with lengthened trailing arm and poly bushes and custom struts if want best droop, add 2 to 4" bigger tyre diameter and bit extra track gives 1 to 2" full clearance lift plus protects sides of wagon in those ditches as wheels too recessed on the foz . Diffs need addressing, either atb or locker if doing lot of ditch/rock crawling. standard viscous diff has quite low viscosity fluid and mixed with size it doesn't transer much torque . Was impressed how well they done for what basically an awd station wagon out the factory :-) Very underrated is the old SF Forester . Does anyone do custom low range gear set ?
There is a description of each vehicule at the beginning of the video. The beige Forester is closest to stock and the grey the most modified. All 3 have dual range from stock.
Yes I see that, assume they all stock low range gearing, lower gearset like from L series or the after, arket ones gets useful for things they doing on this trail . The grey sf showed benefit of lift and large tyres giving further full lift lift below suspension arms . Wouldn't take much work make them even better . was great viewing .
A few more mods could be done to the grey Forester. As it already has helical diffs (Quaife ATB) front and rear, it would be nice to retrofit a traction control powered with an Arduino processor through the ABS, it would prevent wheel spin when diagonal spin occurs but I'm no good with electronics.... It already has maximum wheel travel possible without a body lift, 24cm front/27cm rear but I don't want to body lift it because its my daily driver. Another option could be an R180 ARB or Eaton rear diff lock but I really like the way the helical diffs work on most surfaces. What you don't see on the vid is that the grey Forester did everything with relative ease and the orange Land Rover has Detroit Lockers front and rear. In mild offroading, I think that a well prepared Forester is the vehicule to go thanks to its versatility but when it comes to hard or extreme, no doubt that a Land Rover, a Mercedes G, a Jeep Wrangler or similar are the kings !
Keep Calm and Throttle On Thanks mate ! The orange def was pretty impressive yes ! You don't really hear it but he got the V8 engine ! Oh, and I just subbed to your channel 😉
its great to see Foresters used on some more serious offroad tracks. The green SF with the 235 tyres, Does it have a lift if so how much? I'd like to put 235 x 70 tyres on my SF but I don't have a lift yet. Do you or anyone else know the largest 15inch tyre that can be fitted to an SF without scrubing? TIA. Keep up the greart work
The green Forester has a 2" strut spacer lift, front SVX springs on SF struts, rear Outback BG struts with Pedders oem height springs. Largest tyre on 15" wheels is 215/75 15 with rear Forester SG or Outback BG struts to clear the lower spring perch.
Your crew are a courageous for taking on such difficult trails with vehicles that predominantly have open differentials. I'm assuming the Foresters with open differentials at the front and back are to eventually get clutch-type limited slip differentials? Subaru vehicles with VDC can make it up those obstacles easier as the traction control transfers torque to the wheel with grip when one side is slipping.
ALNSM OVERLAND - If you encounter prolonged downhill braking (where engine braking in lower gears proves too weak to keep vehicle speed safely low), you may also want to consider upgrading the brake pads and brake fluid. Stock, lower consumer-grade brake pads have a maximum operating temperature of about 300 degrees Celsius. You may want to consider searching for brake pads that work safely to at least 400-600 degrees Celsius, perhaps even more if you also drive very fast on paved winding roads. I have taken my Subaru XV (Crosstrek) many places, and cheap consumer-grade brake pads have proven to be both insufficient and unsafe for off-road use as well as fast winding road driving. I would recommend looking at the Ferodo DS2500 brake pad compound as a baseline, as it is safe to use even when cold, has a lower friction rating ideal for slippery surfaces such as found in off-road driving, and has a reasonable maximum operating temperature of 500 degrees Celsius, sufficient for anything except for extreme brake use such as done in rally racing type of driving.
Thanks a lot for your feedback ! I'm keeping the Ferodo DS2500 in my mind for the next brake maintenance ! I was aslo thinking about rear brake swap from drum to disc ;)
Instead of the Forester SF 1.447:1 low range gearing ratio you swap for the Leone 1.598:1 low range gearing ratio. Its not an easy job but a few Forester owners have done it succesfully, check on offroadsubarus.com
little question about the Forester, i'm looking for my first car and i'm a fisherman, which means sometimes I need to go off-road, will a regular Forester with normal road tyres be suited for that? Not extreme offroading or anything, but it does need to be able to go through wet grasslands and mud without getting stuck ya know haha.
Hey! Thank you for your interest 😉 Well, this is logic, road tyres are not good off-road 😂 but the AWD system of the subarus are awesome, theses are are mostly used and sell in the region with tough conditions especially in winter. Mud and snow are their specialty 😉 and their light weight helps a lot as well! So I think you should go for a Forester 😁 but I still recommend you to get light At tires (70% road use / 30% off-road) or snow tires I hope it helps 😉
@@ALNSMOVERLAND Thank you! I live in The Netherlands btw, so you won't really find any tough conditions here haha. 90% of the time i'll be on asphalt or paved roads anyways. But it's nice to know that if you do need to drive across a dried up riverbed or a wet grassland or a muddy trail near a forest that the car won't let you down. Plus I want a car that's reliable, relatively low maintenance, and comfortable on the longer roadtrips to music festivals in Germany & Belgium for instance. I think the Subaru Forester is a car that ticks all of those boxes :)
So what do you think ... SUBARU BEATS LAND ROVERS ?!
Sure they do and you know it ! For example, it took at least 6 attempts for the green Land Rover to pass the ravine at 11:15 but only 2 attempts for the grey Forester....

I subscribe in your channel directly, because I wanna make a trip through Norway (to Hammerfest) in a Subaru Forester S-Turbo 1999 (Green of course) with some of my children and you encouraged us to do so. Now I saw what a Forester is capable of. Not that I shall do it that way. Don't worry. Good luck and have fun.
Awesome plan ! You will have no problem going to Norway with your foz ;) trust me
@@ALNSMOVERLAND Late response? I was busy extracting as many tips as possible from the videos and writing them down. Thanks man.
Following Defenders, brilliant.
Hehehe 😁
This makes me miss my 2000 forester. It was a great car. Sure, it's not as good off road as my TJ or even my F150, but it is better at everything else than the TJ. Lol
They're great for traction, garbage for gearing, bad for clearance, but generally long lasting.
Enjoyed watching this
Good 🙏
I own a 97 sahara and just bought my wife a new Outback.
Epic adventure! You guys crushed it. Thanks for the footage.
Thanks for your kind comment !
Absolutely badass! Thanks for sharing your story 🙏
I have a Subaru 2016, but never thought they can do things like this. Great video!
Thanks! Have fun with your subie!
these subarus can, yours can't
@@neomorina9506 It really seems like any newer subaru with the CVT trans is not nearly up to what the older ones can do. I don't think there is anything you can do to the newer ones to make them better off road besides a lift and tires.
@@LarryRichelli my point, CVT is murdering the reputation of subies
@@neomorina9506 How about the new crosstrek with the manual. Is there a center diff on that that you can wire to be manual?
I am in Africa, this is the first REAL off-road test I have ever seen. This is really a safari terrain. All those other off-road reviews marketing SUVs, should do similar; otherwise, it's a raw deal of testing or demonstrating capabilities to potential clients/ customers.
Yeah, cool to see what Foresters are capable off road !

I’m really impressed. These cars are what 15-16 years old? Simply amazing!
Mine is 21 years old ! Thank you !
You are right, the SJ 2017 XT doesn't belong to the bush. But the older SF and SG do pretty well !
Man I do not miss abusing the clutch to get over obstacles. Most of us in the US use Automatic gearboxes because of the lower gearing and being able to load up the torque converter to get over obstacles. Dual range gearboxes from Subaru are rare here in the US.
Auto is way easier to use offroad that's for sure! I actually slipped my clutch a bit in this video 😔 But my dual range really help!
Very cool video. I get my new Forester XT 2018 in 3 weeks. Thanks for this great video.
Have fun with your fooooz 🙌
A great trip. I like these movies the most. 7:00 minutes I was sure you could not make it. Thank you and we wait for more.

LOVE IS A SUBARU!!!! 2010 Forester.

Yeh they went for, do or die trying lol .
I'm amazed the foresters got over that stream! Well impressed! I'm buying a 2012 this weekend , are they of a similar stock to the ones you are driving here? Pretty sure I'll end up putting a lift kit on it fairly quickly!
Some decent offroad tires, lift and a good driver ha ha nice job!

Awesome video for awesome cars ! Great forest for Foresters !! Yeah

This is proper offroading, not some gravel road trip. Nice video

Hi Karen ! Yes, that's an old video now ahaha
Well, all I can say is that my struts are all fine ! They are from Pedders 😉
So even going hard like this, you don't have to worry about it !
@@ALNSMOVERLAND sweet! A Forester is looking like a better option more and more! Thanks for your reply!
@@karentruempy397 You are welcome ! I think the forester is a very good choice 😁 ahaha
None of the Foresters is stock, they have all been slightly modified.....more or less !
Was impressed how well they done for what basically an awd station wagon out the factory :-)
Very underrated is the old SF Forester .
Nice! It would really be nice for us Subaruers to have better gear reduction for the manual gearbox.
Eldo Rado Sure ! It would be a game changer !
Here in the states it is all about Jeeps. They all tell me know your limits of you and your vehicle. Great video.
MidTnOutdoors That's a good advice ! I didn't wanted to damage the car or hurt myself so I just didn't do it. The safest way is always a good way 👍

its great to see Foresters used on some more serious offroad tracks.
@@vincentwindels3752 Thanks mate much appreciaed.
I love my Subaru
I love mine too !
Thanks mate ! it was very challenging.
All my adventures made me really think about limited slip and better brakes yeah
How does changing the gear ratio of the low range work?
Instead of the Forester SF 1.447:1 low range gearing ratio you swap for the Leone 1.598:1 low range gearing ratio. Its not an easy job but a few Forester owners have done it succesfully, check on offroadsubarus.com
@@vincentwindels3752 oh and thanks btw😂

Thanks mate !
Hello! What model and tire size is the car?
little question about the Forester, i'm looking for my first car and i'm a fisherman, which means sometimes I need to go off-road, will a regular Forester with normal road tyres be suited for that? Not extreme offroading or anything, but it does need to be able to go through wet grasslands and mud without getting stuck ya know haha.
Hey! Thank you for your interest 😉
Well, this is logic, road tyres are not good off-road 😂 but the AWD system of the subarus are awesome, theses are are mostly used and sell in the region with tough conditions especially in winter.
Mud and snow are their specialty 😉 and their light weight helps a lot as well!
So I think you should go for a Forester 😁 but I still recommend you to get light At tires (70% road use / 30% off-road) or snow tires
I hope it helps 😉
Bloody awesome Subarus
