As a serious cellist for over 7 years, I tried to play this piece and was blown away at the technical mastery needed for certain sections. Starker just makes it look effortless, and at such a tempo! Amazing. He venerated like a saint when I was at the IU school of music where he was a professor. Unmatched. Thanks so much for posting this.
Tarantella, so diverse compared to the forty etudes. So much passion and I say stability in the melody come into play that you wouldn't see in one of the etudes. Very well done Janos. A true hero among Popper finatics.
very well said. You need to end on a more melodic and somewhat darker to know that the swan has gone through much in the minor chords within the swan but is still alright.
The Swan is the worst I've ever heard Starker play. Absolutely NO emotion or sensitivity. I've heard MUCH better performances by middle school students. The Popper, though... WOW. Just WOW...
3:45 is popper tarentella (for me when i come back to this vid)
I love comments like these.
Starkers homeland interpretations are just flaming out of his heart.
Dear Jancsi, we love you always. A great artist, human being and friend
Mimi,Marta and Marti
Does anyone else think that at 6:52 are the most beautiful chord passage ever?
totally agree!

Merci beaucoup!!!.....c'est superb....!!!!
Agree with some of the previous comments. Don't care much for the Swan, but the Popper is amazing.
Was that a bit of thumb vibrato I detected in the Popper? A rare talent...
awesome !!!!
That’s interesting: Mr. Starker ends “The Swan” on the D-string.
I love, love, love Starker. But, nothing beats Maisky's Swan.
wonderful!
Mega ultra bravo, 176 likes e 4 bu: ) ;)
Yes D string ending on Swan, the way I learned it! The right way, the tone is wrong when everyone goes to the A string, too bright.
i'm working on popper Tarantella

my teacher told me that popper was more of a technician than a guy who plays very emotionally
Was your teacher alive in the 19th century?
He is probably frustrated because he cant play popper well enough
lol its common
@caradeescusado Why are you thanking people...? You aren't the performer...
The guy is a machine, so he is freaking incredible on fast songs...but honestly I don't really care for his version of the swan.
