Starker clearly has a lot of respect for this young cellist. Julian is doing an amazing job and Janos is focusing on such minuscule nuances. When a teacher gets into that much detail with you, they are working on that last one or two percent. Starker was such an incredible cellist and teacher.
Julian is obviously an excellent cellist.....I studied with Mr. Starker and if you think that you will impress him by playing so well, he will just chop you to pieces! Starker's brilliance comes from the musicial details in cello playing and that is what made him one of the greatest teachers of the past two centuries.
He didn’t chop him to pieces! Also I don’t understand why you would think, that Julian was trying to impress him. He just didn’t want to loose time, because first of all it’s expensive to have lessons, if you don’t have a scholarship and then they also don’t have so much time. He played it amazingly and Starker was very happy to listen to him and improving his approach. He respected Julian a lot!
Having attended two of Starker's master classes while I studied piano at Indiana University in 1978, I remember the intensity in the room most of all. This is such a close-up excerpt, and I can understand Maestro Starker's points and insights. Very interesting to see and hear! RIP Janos Starker.
I feel like I have to stick up for the student here. Masterclasses are very challenging because you often have to change your way of playing and practicing a piece after having memorized/practiced it countless times in your own style before meeting with a professional. He'll be working on it for a while, but what he says will stick with him after he can practice it, it's just not easy to play it right off the bat.
You are totally right... is really unfair comments like that... And for the people who doesnt know him, just google his name, this video was a long time ago and now he became one of the most finest cellist in Germany. Julian Steckel is fantastic!!
Doesn't matter if it is Julian Steckel. Yes Steckel is a fantastic cellist don't get me wrong, but this man worked with Kodaly on the piece himself. Listening to starker would be in the best interest for any cellist. RIP Maestro Starker
El chelista julian se estaba impacientando al ver como el que el suponía no ser tan bueno le daba una cátedra bastante critica sobre su debilidad en la segunda parte del arco y su musicalidad defectuosa para ese estilo de composición. ASI SE HACE !! 2:38
Also, I am sorry to those who wanted to view the video but had to deal with my comments. The view of cello is different throughout the world as I am a cellist myself. It is always interesting to hear other people's comments
You don't have the whole picture. This is probably recorded after he performed it. If you are listening to what Starker is saying, he is talking about how he played before he plays for the first time in the video. So through critical thinking you can assume that Steckel has already played the peice for him. You would think that Starker would know how to teach a masterclass.
Well thanks for clearing that up, Alas I must say that starker is a brilliant man. Steckel maybe a rising star, but what I meant by my comment was that through the course of the video steckel seems uneasy.
Yes, such an incredible chance to work with a man of such fine musicality! Julian is destroying the piece, and unfortunately not listening, just saying Yes and doing the opposite....

XD when the student plays more beautiful than the teacher and the teacher can’t stand it and try’s to dominate with harshness .. no one really owns a piece and every composer or musician who composed something knows that. it should be just talking opinions on this level .
@@nathanaelhorton2942 Kodaly himself described starker's interpretation as precisely what he envisioned. Are you actually saying that starker is incapable of playing more quietly if he wanted to. The student here is missing critical elements of the style of kodaly
Poiu Trew No, Kodaly stated that Starker came the closest to the piece as composed. It is a true gift to sit down with Mr Starker as he is like it or not a master cellist. How you feel or how you think comes later, take the knowledge and improve. If you find that annoying, leave the room and let another who wants to learn take the lesson.
@@proletariatpidgeon Commenter would prefer Starker told the kid he was "great" and gave him some useless comments about musicianship. No, Starker dialed in on what was keeping this from rising above a B- performance at best...He was the best teacher. RIP.

David Rezits I have to agree, his eye on bowing and the usage of it, incredible

His method of teaching is almost militant and blunt but so clear and precise

No one played it so effortlessly and perfectly as Janos Starker in my opinion, flawless
At 2:39 he takes his coat off like: "Now, shit's about to go down"

Una meravella de clase tant per professor, com l`alumne ...Congratulations .......
please we want the whole masterclass! :)
I think he is trying his best... Not so easy to do what Starker does :P
Chock full of good info!
Number 1 for kodály

What a boss
Julian Steckel is playing tremendously - but he's in front of a genius.
Where can I find this full video?
MASTER!
"This bowing business is disturbing"

Sul ponticello

It's "János", not "Janós".
I agree. I don't know how many ways Janos can tell him the same thing! He's playing Kodaly like Bloch.
Wow, a chance to work with starker on this piece, and he doesn't listen to him
Looks like he trying to be showy, instead of trying to learn.
yup!

same issue he is making all the time that is why Starker has to ask him stop again and again, put the ego lower than learn something.

Take for example 6:44. Now compare Starker’s to the ‘student’. If you say that Starker’s is better after that then there’s something wrong with you
Seriously? Go back to playing skin flute ya moron

Pretty boy too focused on his mannerisms; can't hear that his sound is very weak in upper half of boy.
Still. Starker as a teacher is really annoying.

I hope within the 4years since this ridiculous accusation you realized you knew nothing about Starker to say something so ignorant.
