When I was a cello student back in the Sixties and early Seventies, Starker was my idol and my favorite cellist. Although I was never his pupil, I did play for him twice: the Lalo concerto, and the Schumann Fantasy Pieces. He was much less ferocious than I had expected. He was very good at taking any given piece, and any student's performance, as a natural starting point for a broader discussion of general principles regarding technique and interpretation.
