This was the last song Freddie recorded and always a tough listen because of the lyrics...especially when Brian May comes in at the last verse because you know when he recorded that Freddie was gone. Freddie was a warrior. The last song Freddie wrote A Winters Tale is very positive and full of joy for the world.

Brian and freddie wrote it together basically. But freddie was so ill that brian did the phisical writing. But of course it was meant for freddie, and brian made sure it expressed freddies feelings at that time. Show must go on is the same story, Brian wrote it from freddies persective. Too much love will kill you, though, is different cause it was about brian’s marriage falling apart

Brian recently has taken more credit for SMGO and yes he did do most of the composition and put it all together but I think it should at least by credited as his and Freddies song if not the band, the chord sequence is John and Rogers.
Brian said in a lot of earlier interviews and tv he and freddie worked out the theme and wrote it together they solidified most of it, he had enough material to finish the last 2 verses and after their session added butterfly wings
TMLWKY was co written in 87 or 88

A winters tale. I believe Freddie wrote it from his bed looking out the window. Cool cat Please do Back Chat I’m going slightly mad, plus watch the making of going slightly mad. By this time Freddie’s foot was so deteriorated he was in such pain. Some say this song was about his view of things through his medication. He wore extra clothes. Partly to hide his weight loss and partly his clothes and he had special ones against his painful skin from the lesions due to sarcoma. The lyrics shows he could push through and still was strong an desire to be creative. 🥲

This has to be the saddest song ever written. I don't think we can be sure who the mother in the song is. Freddie was very close to Mary, but he was also very close to his mother. The line "Mother, please, let me back inside is a wish to return to the womb. And at the very end there is "Going Back" all the way to the baby's cry. Freddie was only able to be present in the studio for short periods at this time, It's amazing to think of the strength of the man who could no longer stand upright for long, able to push these beautiful sounds out of his frail body. A thoughtful reaction as always, Rory.

It was Freddie that stoped his meds (except pain) once he knew/felt there was no where to go. There's a video of an interview with Mary that touches upon that end period and his decision. You have that other Larry Lurex song to listen to, which is heard at the end of the sound montage of this song ("Goin' Back") from 1973.

Never saw this fan vid. Great job on their part.
It’s a testament to Brian & Freddie’s relationship that this song & the show must go on, among others, are so powerful. They really were like brothers.
This is some of the commentary for this track from “the complete works” book.
"If there was ever a song that combined the passion and driving force that Freddie demanded, ‘Mother Love’ was undoubtedly it. Written mostly by Brian and arranged by Freddie, the song is a highlight of Made In Heaven: centred around a sombre melody and propeled by a shuffling drum machine, the song is a vehicle for Freddie’s emotional vocal performance. Recorded in the last few months of his life in the spring of 1991, the song finds its shattered and broken narrator, his life draining from his body, pleading for the comfort and familiarity of mother.
Brian later remarked with poignant fondness that this was the most significant collaboration he’d ever had with Freddie, and that the lyrics were more or less made up on the spot as the vocalist sat on and nodded approvingly."

  • @marvalstith2749
    @marvalstith2749 Рік тому +3

I've passed by this reaction of yours, couldn't bear hearing what I dread ... words not recognising these lyrics are Freddie telling Mary Austin of his love for her continuing to the end. Hearing you today, realise Freddie may have done his vocals earlier when stronger...then just the other day I found a video of Dave Richards, made after Innuendo was out. On camera Dave says Freddie told him, "I'm gonna sing it now. I'll give it to you on a drum machine, then Dave interrupts himself and says "He was dying" then says Freddie says "can't wait for them to do music on it. They can finish the music on this". Brian's ending is touching but ...perhaps all Freddie wanted added was the music.

Singing till the end keeping him alive as said Roger and Brian explained that Freddie said "write me things, write me things”… But for this song, he was too tired to sing the last verse and he said he will come back, “but he never came back” (this was recorded in Montreux (Switzerland) where they had a studio and where Freddie was in peace, no paparazzi). The last album, Made in Heaven, was made without Freddie, 3 or 4 years after his death…

Bittersweet for me. This is the last song Freddie sang and Brian had to finish the final verse. There was no video for this song. Thank you again, Rory. I have always thought that this song was probably about Mary Austin who was with him until the end and truly was the love of his life, the one he always knew he could count on. When everyone else failed him, Freddie said, I always have Mary and that is enough. She was everything to Freddie that he could let her be, and he loved her with all of his heart. They were bonded souls so yes, I do believe this song is about Mary. Freddie wrote the song, Brian finished it for Freddie. Brian would not let anyone else touch this song because he said he knew exactly what Freddie wanted it to be. So it was tucked away until Brian was strong enough to come back to the studio and finish it. The band did take a break for a year then they went back in the studio to start on their next album. So though there was a two year span, only one year of it was the band being apart.

You must know this by now, but Freddie asked Brian to keep writing songs for him to sing, and Brian wrote it for Freddie, and had to sing the last verse since a Freddie got too sick to continue. Freddie was in so much pain, this was after These Are aThe Days of Our Luves and that video, and at that time, half his four had been eaten away by AIDS … at the end, he lost his sight and fell into a coma. He gave up meds and only took pain killers that last month. I read he still had that art in his head, it couldn’t get it out. I think his love of music and all that kept him alive much longer had he not been such a unique person, and had such love of life and singing, anything and everything. He wasn’t afraid, and never complained. But he really told them to do whatever they wanted with the lyrics he could get out that last year, he just wanted to sing. What a beautiful soul. I love this song; it gives me strength, knowing such a person existed. “Lover of Life, Singer of Songs”. Sigh, I miss him. Thank you!

I get confused on what was done when so checked some details in the All the Songs book. Freddie recorded Mother Love in Montreux 13, 16, and 22 May, 1991. These Are the Days of Our Lives was recorded In Montreux between March 1989 and November 1990. The video for These Are the Days of Our Lives was filmed in London on May 30, 1991. Brian's bit was recorded on this one later. On the speculation of who Mother Love was written for, I could see it being for both Mary and Jer. The "let me back inside' bit especially seems to refer to his mum, whilst the earlier lyrics could be for Mary. He loved them both!

yeah the last video was "These are the days of our lives" which got to number one in the weeks after his passing . This song did not come out until 1995 on the "Made in Heaven" LP , it was actually an unfinished song , that's why Brian May sings the last verse. The last ten seconds or so has a small section of "Goin' back" which is the B side of the Larry Lurex single from 1973 that you reviewed recently !

Yes, it's emotional but your reactions can never ruin my day. They are always a bright spot. There are several things you should keep in mind when you hear this song. Brian has battled depression throughout his life and still does to this day. Around the time Freddie was dying, Brian was also losing his dad and his marriage was breaking up so he was having a very difficult time coping with everything. Everyone would but when you have depression on top of all that, coping is so much more difficult. I think that is where the deep lyrics are rooted and I think he fought to keep them from being even deeper. Just my opinion. Thanks for the reaction.

    • @bluebell3720
      @bluebell3720 Рік тому +1

I think people forget Brian wrote this.
this was written in 91, he started dating/affair with Anita in 86, his wife who had their 3rd child early 87 then found out and filed for divorce so he had been divorced and with Anita a few years when this was written. but when he left his wife and was with Anita he cheated on her with his married secretary. but he is now married to Anita.
I've read articles that he had to get help and he said it was a clinic that treated depression as an addiction, that doesn't sound quite right, maybe addictive/obsessive behavior could be part of the over all problem..?
but I can't find anything that says clearly when he had this help, I think it was after his solo career, one article said his children went to the clinic? if that's true

    • @peggyh8937
      @peggyh8937 Рік тому +1

@@bluebell3720 Interesting. I was unaware of the affair with the secretary. That must be why he waited so long after his divorce to marry Anita. You're right, depression as an addiction sounds a bit off but doesn't surprise me given other insane things transpiring in healthcare today. My comment stemmed from an interview of Brian where he lumped the three, Freddie's death, his dad's death, and the break-up of his marriage together leading up to him becoming suicidal after Freddie's death in 1991 which is probably when he sought treatment at that clinic but can't say for sure. The time frame fits. He indicated in that interview that his treatment/recovery inspired the Back To The Light album in 1992. One of those events is enough to make life difficult. Add all three, plus the fact he wasn't allowed to speak about Freddie's illness until he was gone, and clinical depression and honestly, I don't know how he made it through. Thank God for his support system and immense courage that got him through it but I know he still talks about his struggles with depression today.

when people realised what was going on his attitude would have given strength to people that regardless what you're going through you don't need to hide or give up

He was too tired to finish more than the first verse, he planned on finishing it the next day but he never made it back to the recording studio. Brian finished the song so it could be released. His brain was still working fine, but his body had failed him. Mary Austin, the woman he considered his common law wife and the only person he ever really loved.

I find Brian so difficult ( brilliant musician but as a person he's too confusing and contradictory..)
Mother Love is credited to him and Freddie though when he explains it doesn't sound as if Freddie had much in put
'May discussed the writing process he and Mercury had (writing both separately and together, and conscious of the nature of the song and the lyrics), the statement that he made, "And Freddie at that time said 'Write me stuff... I know I don't have very long; keep writing me words, keep giving me things I will sing, then you can do what you like with it afterwards, you know; finish it off' and so I was writing on scraps of paper these lines of 'Mother Love', and every time I gave him another line he'd sing it, sing it again, and sing it again, so we had three takes for every line, and that was it... and we got the last verse and he said 'I'm not up to this, and I need to go away and have a rest, I'll come back and finish it off...' and he never came back". The last part of song was sung by May.'
but Show must go on is mainly credited to Brian even though in earlier interviews and on tv he said clearly many times that he did the main composition ( the chord sequenced used from Roger and John jam session and inspired chord sequence from by Pachelbel's Canon. which seems more Freddie)
but how wrote it with Freddie 'they' hammered out the lyrics together
agreed on the theme ' hearbroken clown with his smile painted on'

as much as I hate this song his vocals are fantastic ( and composition I just find the lyrics weird and too negative considering how Freddie was just my opinion)
I wish they had recorded more with him after Innuendo, he was getting weaker obviously but his vocals were still strong

i think if i was facing death there might be a bit of negativity in my lyrics ! Overall it's quite positive

it was written or atleast mainly by Brian, it's not clear
but that's my point despite what he was going through he wasn't negative at least not outwardly one thing everyone keeps saying about him, positive attitude and didn't want to make others feel uncomfortable.
he had just recorded winters tale very simple but beautiful, it takes a lot to be in that situation and still see the beauty around you

I found it weird too, untilI realized that “mother love” is unconditional love.

unpopular opinion but I hate this song I just find it so weird
    my woman...affair...sweat mother love..mamma please..?
it's so negative when Freddie had just wrote and recorded winters Tale simple but beautiful and positive.
I've walked too long in this lonely lane
I've had enough of this same old game
I'm a man of the world and they say that I'm strong
But my heart is heavy, and my hope is gone
yes sure he was terminal he passed 6 months later, but he always had a positive attitude he kept going as not to bring anyone down..not to be bitter ... kept going and wanted to continue to do his music until he couldn't.
yes he could be very melancholy but this is just so absolute my hope is gone
he was realistic but music kept him going, this was his last song
so annoyed that winters tale was no 6 uk but NOT inc on greatest hits 3?
they keep going on and on how much music meant to him and kept him going but they don't include the last song he wrote and recorded which was in the top 10? but they inc songs with other artists which weren't released?
they didn't inc Bo Rap which was re released after his death and went to no 1 and over Christmas again
but not inc technically their first and last no 1
( days of our lives was put as a double A side to it, personally I dont think they should have done that)
Days of Our lives video was recorded after the recording session for mother love so he could have finished it
