  • On July 10, 2013 - The Americanarama Tour hit St. Paul Minnesota's Midway Stadium with Richard Thompson, My Morning Jacket, Wilco and Bob Dylan. Towards the end of Dylan's set, the Bard of Hibbing waxed nostalgic about an early chapter in his career when he played piano with Bobby Vee's band The Shadows in 1959. Indeed it was his first paying gig. Vee who recently retired from performing after an Alzheimers diagnosis was in the audience and was invited up next to the soundboard for this tribute and the two men caught up with each other after the show. A mutual admiration society to be sure and just magic to witness. As Bobby's son-in-law I had access to some old Shadows images and decided to mash them up with two of the handheld videos floating around UA-cam. Thanks to FallenManWildMercury Films and Harry Cane - I hope you don't mind my cutting your two videos into one. You caught a rare and heartfelt moment that Minnesota music writers have called one of the standout moments of 2013. Thank you - and obviously no copyright infringement intended.
ps A year and a half before this night in St. Paul, Vee was toiling away in his Tucson garage (soon after his diagnosis) recording with his 3 sons what will be his final record - The Adobe Sessions.
A family scrapbook of sorts of the songs most precious to them. One is a cover of Dylan's THE MAN IN ME - a video of the live garage recording is here: • The Man In Me - Bobby Vee

I did not know Bobby Vee had passed His first song Susie Baby was always my favorite, Run to Him. great but to me Susie baby a true gem from the late 50's, so simple yet so melodic, and to have Dylan singing this is so poetic!!!

Very gracious of Dylan to remember Bobby Vee, who had at the time of this concert already been diagnosed the Alzheimer's disease which has today lead to his death. RIP Bobby.

I grew up listening to Buddy Holly and then Bobby Lee and later to Bob Dylan's early music. I didn't know Bob Dylan was in Bobby Vee's 'Shadows' group. It's good to know Bob Dylan remembers Bobby Lee like this. I agree with Dan Lacey's comment of four years ago... "This should have a million views". Your 'Adobe Sessions' video scrapbook of Bobby Vee's last years with his family is lovely. His smile reminds me why I liked his music. THANKS Tony B

Dylan has often said this is one of his favorite songs. Bravo to him for recognizing the depth of Bobby Vee's song. I think for Dylan it must have been tied into Suze Rotolo... ah, yeah, Free Wheeling Bob Dylan on the cover with her. Live is beautiful. But it's sad, too.

Bobby Vee I had a sister rocking to your music when you were so hot and I was 11 years younger however I loved your music then and I love the cover and adoration Bob Dylan has staged in this song tonight. Such touching lyrics taking into consideration as well the history of this outrageous man this song suits him and it breaks my heart more then it did his.

Two greats on different musical roads*, but both important. This is a great performance of this song; thank you for the video editing! RIP, Robert Thomas Velline; keep living a good life, Robert Zimmerman!
*Bobby Vee honored his own singer-songwriter side, not as a departure from, but as another lane in, his road on the 1972 album, "Nothing But a Sunny Day," credited to Robert Thomas Velline. There were some really fine tracks on it, and I would have loved to have seen him pursue that direction further.

You're telling me. I love that record, he loved that record, his family loves that record. Fair to say it was his proudest musical achievement. Just didnt catch on with the record buying public sadly. If you poke around on my UA-cam page you'll see a video I did of a live show he did in Scotland not long after the record came out and, despite the sketchy audio quality, you can hear where his head was at at the time. Cool covers, great backing band etc.

@@barronwhittet7606 - I'm glad that record is so well loved. I still have my vinyl copy! I was music director at WHCN in Hartford when it came out, and I gave it some serious airplay, particularly "Every Opportunity" and "My God and I." I was lucky to have an on-air phone interview with him, and he was every bit as warm, intelligent and gracious as his reputation says. Bobby had a great voice for the singer-songwriter genre, and of course, he was also on top of the British invasion: I still love "I'll Make You Mine" and "Look at Me Girl." Thank you for your reply, Barron.

Thanks for doing this. I shot the shaky zoom in and out close-ups. It was tough to stay steady because I was shoulder-to-shoulder with people. Plus, the lights went down between each song, so I had to refocus once the lights came back on, meaning I had to zoom in and out. As the show went on, my shooting improved a little. Thanks so much for using my clips. That’s AWESOME!!!!

Hey, so nice to hear from you. I've been nervous all these intervening years that one of the two people who shot this very cool musical moment might NOT have been cool with my lifting their footage and melding into my edit. But tried to give credit where credit is due, and hoped you'd like the final piece. Bobby Vee was my father in law. A beautiful guy who was in the early stages of Alzheimers on this night, but who was invited to the side of the stage with his son and daughter during this performance. Fair to say that more than a few happy tears flowed in this moment. And Mr D couldn't have been more gracious catching up with old friend and bandmate BVee after the show. A magic night it was. Thanks again for capturing it !

@@barronwhittet7606 It’s wonderful to be a part of history. That’s so cool that he was your father-in-law. One of my favorite segments of Chronicles Volume One was Dylan’s story about seeing your father-in-law in New York City, I think it was 1961. He describes your father-in-law as someone who was very humble and kind. I’m so happy that I could contribute something to the story.

Bob Dylan was paying a tribute to Bobby Vee he chose this song because it Rocks. The 1st song that Bobby Vee wrote & recorded. A very pretty song at that & Bobby Vee was only 14 Yrs old when it was recorded. It was kind enough that Bob Dylan did his tribute to Bobby Vee. Bobby Vee was already sick and suffering from Alzheimer's and later died from it. Just like Bobby Vee Bob Dylan has always been a great song writer and a great recording artist. Great song & thanks for sharing thumbs up to this one.

A very young Robert Zimmerman worked as a waiter's assistant and ''boy for everything'' at Red Apple Café in Fargo (North Dakota) , where he knew Bobby Vee . Curiously he would give him the opportunity to work as a pianist for his group in 1959 , after seeing him pound the restaurant's piano in his spare time to créate atmosphere .

    • @edited7382

What was he doing in North Dakota in 1959? Wasn't he still in high school?

    • @blackcrow7049

@@edited7382 Robert Zimmerman had just graduated from Hibbing High School in 1959 when he came to Fargo to check out the music scene in the summer of '59 invited by a friend (Ron Joelson) who met at summer camp in Minnesotta to live with his family in Fargo during the summer of '59. Dylan lived in the attic in Joelson's house at 1122, 7th St. S. in Fargo.

stigtrace- Not that it's important at all, but Dylan is two years older than Bobby. But hell, I grew up on those 2 guys' music. Come to think of it, looking at a friend as an older bro shouldn't have much to do with it anyway, eh?

Dylan should have retired his failed voice long ago, his rendition here of BV"s classic, and my favorite tune of his is dreadful. Kudos to Dylan for remembering BV though.
