This is the one of the best podcasts that I’ve seen in a long time explaining the intricacies of these various deals on more than a performance and worth picture
Good stuff, Ryan! If they're ever going to build sustainable success moderately within the luxury tax, now is the time to move Vientos to 1B, give Baty one more chance at 3B or see if Acuna and/or Mauricio can lock up 2B/3B. See how it plays out in spring training and strike a trade then if you don't like what you see or give it a larger sample size and wait closer to the deadline. Leave some room for pivoting in season.
Why are we still talking about Pete!? He choose his route last year when he decided to decline the extension. Great having you here Pete, I was a big fan of yours while you were here but YOU CHOSE THIS. Another confroto story
Agreed. Paying over market value for Pete at this point only makes sense if you think it puts you near level with the Dodgers. Which it doesn't. Would have loved to keep Alonzo, but where things are at have been more about his and Boras' decisions than the Mets. Starting the year with space for a prospect to win 1 infield position isn't such a bad thing either.
@brianwagner781 Well said. Even a $330m payroll doesn't allow for regulars at every position through FA. Besides, the combination of Mauricio-Acuna-Baty and a backup MIer if they add one project to 2.0 fWAR at 3B while Alonso at 1B projects to 2.5 fWAR. Why pay Pete $25m-30m to add 0.5 fWAR while fixing Vientos' defense at 3B for however many years you sign Pete? Compared with 3B, Vientos rates to be 0.5 fWAR better on D at 1B---where he's played competently for half a season in pro ball. Stearns appears to have decided that he can make the transition to 1B acceptably, and by scouts' accounts Acuna has the arm to play 3B even though he has yet to appear there in pro ball. Interesting, though, that Acuna did't play an inning there this winter in the Venezuelan league. Do they think he's better suited to play backup 2B/SS despite his weak hitting w/ the Mets in AA and AAA since he arrived?
Excellent show. Astute analysis. Thanks for the insights. I trusted David Stearns and now, thanks to you, I have a better understanding of why he's doing what he's doing in regard to the Pete process.
I could still see another reliever (Stanek?), but I think that’s it going into the season. For the record: I love the Minter signing. I’m actually feeling good about the bullpen in ‘25.
A team owner like Cohen to whom the money, mere tens of millions of dollars, is irrelevant can't afford to think that way, though. If he does, his GM will never, ever sign a player if it puts the team at or above the 3rd LT threshold, never mind the 4th. No player is underpriced to the point where it's 'worth it' to add the 95% penalty let alone the 110% penalty. Pete's not worth $30m a year, never mind $63m a year so that's not the issue. As for Ryan, he's not thinking about this correctly. Vlad doesn't win you the WS if you add him, he only moves the needle by an identifiable amount, say from 10% at the Deadline to 12%.
Getting Juan Soto at about 800million you obviously want to compete for a title. But if you don’t get a strong bat behind him then you’re not competing with the Dodgers and top teams. And we don’t even have enough great starting pitchers. So how do you expect to win a title with what you have now?
Why can’t Vientos hit behind Soto? He’ll most likely be a stronger threat than Pete was. Starting pitching is better than what we had last season. Bullpen will be nails. We have a very solid team and the postseason is not over
Great show. I love leaving Mark Vientos at 3B since David Stearns said that's where they see him & signing the switch hitting Jurickson Profar by spring training. However, they should start with the left handed Jared Young at 1B. Joey Meneses could be the right handed compliment at 1B. I'm pleased with giving left handed Anthony Gose a shot in majors. At the trade deadline, Mets should bring back Kumar Rocker for our 6-man rotation. Let's Go Mets!!!
@ Mets need to see how they perform in spring training. Alternatively, Acuña could play third base with Vientos on 1B. It would be phenomenal to sign Profar in March.
here's a crazy thought, if for certain that Alonso doesn't come back why don't they just call up JT Schwartz to fill in at 1st and keep Vientos at 3rd? As the season gets along and if they Blue Jays are in sell mode by mid-season, swing trade for Vladdy Jr ?
I’ll be honest….if Pete is able to return, they will have a very strong lineup…..if he does not re-sign, while there’d be more uncertainty at the same time there will be the potential to have a more dynamic type of team….sort of a supremely balanced team…solid everything and minor weak spots…better overall defense…consistent clutch hitting….reliable pitching staff…who knows how this will end up
@LockedOnMets I watch numerous different Mets related podcasts and UA-cam channels and, Ryan, BY FAR you are the biggest drama queen and bring negative vibes. With the Alonso thing you were beside yourself, now you’re using video titles implying the Mets have a budget. It’s absurd how in your feelings you get. Chill out man and report facts.
Is getting Alonso back guarantee that we beat the Dodgers? Maybe we don't get into the postseason but we are in the thick of it. Next year Sproat, McClean, Tidwell, Tong, and many position players are going to be major league-ready. You build a consistent championship-caliber team with good young talent, and smart trades and free agent acquisitions. You don't build a consistent champion with a bloated payroll of free agents.
@ Where did that get the 1980's Yankees? They shelled out big bucks and never won a pennant. Their 90's juggernaut team was built around a solid core of young talent.
Ryan the Mets have to really start making serious moves if they want to get past dodger's. I believe ohtani is talking to the japanese player's to sign with dodgers. We need at least two bats in line up, if they really trade for Guerrero it can happen.
I think they are responsible enough to have an idea of where they soft cap is for them but I’m sure if the right deal becomes available they will go over it like what happened last year with JD Martinez.
There is no payroll, the FO and Cohen are just over Pete's and Boras' nonsense. When we were in on Peterson and Hernandez we were not out on Pete. Pete just needs too realize that there are no crazy big offers out there, unfortunately for him. I hope Pete comes back, honestly. I don't want to see him playing for the Angels or Blue Jays, no one deserves that lol
David Stearns job is NOT to make “good business decisions.” His job is whatever Cohen says it is. So where is Cohen’s head at? I’m not sure people understand how much money $25 billion is. If, including luxury tax, Cohen spends $1 billion this year … which he won’t, .. that’s less than me spending on a luxury car in terms of percent of worth. And it doesn’t take into account how much revenue the Mets generate for Cohen to offset costs. But still we are told to focus on the “budget.” I find this kind of disappointing. Uncle Steve sold himself to us as a “fan” who would bring a championship to Queens. I guess it remains to be seen. And for those pining for signing Vlad Jr - how does that fit with being on this budget?
@ If you want a player who you think will help your team, why not pay a little more when it is very much a drop in the financial bucket to the guy writing the check? I thought we wanted to improve the team.

@@dashx1103Clearly they will overpay for a player they think will help them (Soto) and clearly they won’t overpay for a player they don’t think is a key component to winning (Alonso).
As of today, the roster is a third-place team in the NL East. Even with Soto, this lineup concerns no one. The pitching is below last year's staff. There are a lot of arms, but the variance in quality is a concern. Baty is showing himself to be ordinary at the plate. Mauricio will not be back until mid-season as he is rehabbing from last year's knee injury and will have missed more than a full year of playing time. Lowballing Alonso after overpaying for so many on the roster is one of the worst moves I've seen in recent years. The concern about Alonso's age is nonsense. 30 is not over the hill, and a three-year deal with mutual opt-outs is a good move, even if the AAV is high. Overpaying for one season to stabilize 1st Base and bring consistency to the lineup is not expensive. At this point, I will not pay the $150 for my MLB subscription to watch every game. I'd rather watch the highlights (if there are any) on YT. Until Alonso signs elsewhere, there is still hope to save the mold of the 2025 season from being that of a third-place team.
Great analyses! I am really happy to finally have a smart guy manning the ship in Stearns. I was so disappointed when they signed verlander and scherzer because they were classic dumb team moves, but no more of that bullshit under Stearns. I can finally feel like there is a legit chance this team will finally win another title in the next decade. I knew under the wilpons it wouldnt happen cuz they were baseball dummies and the stupidity flows from the top.
800 M for one guy now we on a budget. We don’t need Pete we got winker! Good job. 😂😂😂 sterns gonna enjoy everything coming this season. Reality check heading in 150MPH on a 27 car train.
Alonso ran himself out of town. Mets gave him a competitive offer. Why he thinks he's worth more than $25 mio per year for batting .210 with RISP is beyond me.
IMO they blew it when signing Soto. He took TOO much of the budget. I like the way the Yankees moved on by filling spots they needed talent at with Solid(not great but solid) players . Soto whom so much depends on now, has little protection in the lineup. Mets again IMO need at least 1 more solid bat and I don't see them going after it. I would highly recommend Tommy Pham who is dynamite against RH pitching. He's poor fielder but he could be a great dh vs RH's. As they are right now Metsies are a solid probably above .500 team but compare them to the Dodgers especially now that that rookie Japanese pitcher went there and I have to laugh at the comparison. Mets starters are patched together from flotsam and jetsam(whatever that is). All Mets fans can do is hold their breath to see how the starters perform. It could be decent but it could as easily get Ugly Fast
Pete will be on METS 2025 Roster...He'll get real and accept the METS deal...Hopefully he will work on his game while on hiatus/hold-out...Pete, hit the batting cage instead of the golf course and learn to NOT take so many of those early clear strikes or helplessly wave at those ridiculous sliders in the dirt later in the counts...You have to PROVE your skills are not diminishing, as you did in the Playoffs, but for the entire season...Also, you need to bring your RISP to, or above, your batting average, as opposed to far below it...!! It's ALL up to you Pete
I think even tho signing Soto this year is still gonna be a lets see year.. Lets see if any of these prospects are ready and can actually play at a MLB level.. See can Baty afer 2 poor looks , all of a sudden gets it and produces as thought .. Can Mauricio be what he looked like for that brief look. I believe Acuna should be the starting 2b with McNeil as top util guy
It’s a gigantic bluff, but we do have the pieces to head into spring training as is. Going with Baty / Mauricio / Acuña at 3B is much higher upside than a lot of options out there. If none of them grab that job, we need to remember that McNeil came up through the minors with a lot of time at 3B, and that opens 2B for Acuña. Right now, this team is better than last year.
I think it’s a bit of calling Alonso’s bluff. He’s yet to bring a better offer to the table and the Mets are improving their negotiating position by improving alternatives.
I hate being pessimistic but what’s it matter anymore lol i legitimately won’t see us go past the NLCS for the entirety of the Soto contract I was hyped for
I’m a diehard Mets fan but this is no super team fourth maybe especially if Baty is the option at third omg this is terrible. They better score about eight runs a game with this starting pitching staff
If the Mets are done at 293 million n they r worried about the tax level and the Dodgers are pushing 360. I don’t wanna hear about this team will spend to win! Yeah we spending, but we’re not going above and beyond. How can you compete with the Dodgers at 293 when they’re over 360 and just getting more and more talent and we’re afraid to sign anyone for any length
I think fans don't consider the magnitude of the luxury taxes when considering these contracts. Sure Cohen can "afford" it but is Pete the difference maker that warrants that cost? Up until THE homerun most of us were probably saying no way. I love Pete but he's not worth the cost in my opinion.
I like Acuna playing somewhere in the infield, he proved himself last year, let him play, Pete was awful last year, dont blame the Mets strategy, see what happens
If you spend 700 mil on a player, they only way to go forward is to continue to spend money. I’m a Mets fan but if you get a guy for 700 mil I better see a few World Series. Go make the proper team around him, especially if vlad is the peice. Make him the richest 1st basemen for all I care
Teams like the A's, Marlins get that luxury tax money. That's why they are perennial tankers. But those teams eventually have to spend or they won't be eligible for that revenue sharing. That's why the A's made all those moves this offseason. The penalties for teams like the Mets yanks and dodgers are draft pick slots, and allowance for Ifa signings.
I’ll be ok going into this season with another proven BP arm like Yates or Robertson, then reassess at around the trading deadline and pick up someone like Vladdy or Alcántara having to trade less prospect capital than you would have to right now.
Trade capital might actually go up at the deadline. The way it goes down is if the trade target isn’t doing well. If Alcantara is being Alcantara or if Vlad Jr is being Vlad Jr … it will cost an arm and a leg.
I would bat lindor behind soto to avoid soto from being walked 200 times because vientos strikes out too much unless alvarez has the year he had in 2023
They know they aren’t going to win and punted. Hence no signings since Soto. Idk why they bothered getting Manaea. 2025 will be what last was supposed to be. We’re gonna see the kids. And that’s bs
It doesnt matter who the mets sign next b if anybody the dodgers with their 6 aces and that bill pen and an offense that can go toe to toe with the mets have won the 2025 world series its just a matter of trying to go as far as they did last year tovthe nlcs if they can get past atllanta philadelphia mileaukee and San diego
Mets need to Dump salary some how !! Marte or McNeil.....If they add Arenado one has to go in the package.. I would roll the dice with Arenado. He is good for 28HR, 90RBI, and .280 with a gold glove !
mets arent better lol felt like they would be after soto but now its a joke. no bog bat to protect soto. so we replaced alonso with soto is all that happened
What a disgrace. The dodgers are a real team. That’s a commitment to winning. The Mets are a joke. Just because they signed Soto. What about or the other holes. They have a chance to sign Scott to help out hay terrible bullpen and below par pitching staff. There outfield besides Soto is basically minor league. There infield now does not have a first basemen that has any power. I’m sore this is exactly what They sold Soto on. What a disgrace. They are a third place team. Could u imagine Baty starting at third. OMG
Yeah, the terrible bullpen that Fangraphs has rated the seventh best bullpen in MLB going into 2025. You clown. Diaz, Minter, Butto, Nunez, Reid-Foley, Garrett, among numerous other solid relievers. So pathetically obvious you listen see what other clueless people say and you just vomit out what you hear others say.
@ why do they need Tanner Scott? Because Minter has a much better career ERA? Because Minter has way less walks? Because Minter has a better ERA+? Because Minter has less innings on his arm? Why, exactly, do they need Scott instead of Minter?
Alonso is not equal to Walker. Alonso averages 42 home runs and 108 RBIs, Walker 27 home runs and 80 RBIs. True Walker wins gold gloves, but it is still not close
BRING PETE BACK!!!! HE FILLS OUT THE LINEUP AT THE VERY LEAST!!! Pitchers don’t pitch to him! That’s why his batting average is down! He has the 2nd most home runs of anybody since 2019!!! AND HE’S A RIGHT HANDED BATTER!!!! Pete has worked hard as hell for this team!!!! Pitchers are afraid of him!!! PETE ALONSO BELONGS IN NEW YORK!!!! BRING PETE BACK!!!!That is all…
I’m sorry but if they do all of this and then fail to bring back their number one homegrown player just to save $10 million dollars, I will forgive them for that. I’m on Pete’s side of this.

Don't mind giving Mauricio, acuña, baty a chance, but I'd prefer vientos on third acuña on second. Would of liked Pete back at first.
I think they will get another reliever and then wait the potential bats out
Could definitely be their plan. I think they do want to add a top bat, but the prices probably aren’t what they want to pay.
Welcome Juan Soto, to the bargain basement PBO Stearns.
If they are done who is the starting first baseman??
I think even tho signing Soto this year is still gonna be a lets see year.. Lets see if any of these prospects are ready and can actually play at a MLB level.. See can Baty afer 2 poor looks , all of a sudden gets it and produces as thought .. Can Mauricio be what he looked like for that brief look. I believe Acuna should be the starting 2b with McNeil as top util guy
Rotation is horrible
Current lineup would have Soto drawing 150 walks. Need a bat behind him
MLB network said Santander is willing to go short term, why hasn’t Stearns signed him?
It’s a gigantic bluff, but we do have the pieces to head into spring training as is. Going with Baty / Mauricio / Acuña at 3B is much higher upside than a lot of options out there. If none of them grab that job, we need to remember that McNeil came up through the minors with a lot of time at 3B, and that opens 2B for Acuña. Right now, this team is better than last year.
Lol
@@Standdividedfalltogetherdefinitely no Baty . Baty at third means lose
@@Patrick-o8l6mI was laughing at him saying this team is better than last year. TBH I still am and it’s been hours
I think it’s a bit of calling Alonso’s bluff. He’s yet to bring a better offer to the table and the Mets are improving their negotiating position by improving alternatives.
Good morning ! I thought no budget!
their on a budget
Trust in David Stearns
I believe Pete will be signed later. The Mets and him will find a way
I hate being pessimistic but what’s it matter anymore lol i legitimately won’t see us go past the NLCS for the entirety of the Soto contract I was hyped for
I still feel like they are bluffing
hope so
😂. bluffing for what?? there aren’t any players left to sign
I’m a diehard Mets fan but this is no super team fourth maybe especially if Baty is the option at third omg this is terrible. They better score about eight runs a game with this starting pitching staff
Mets2026. We just don’t have the sauce this year. Hopefully we make a great run like last year!
Mets need another bat. If they go for Vlad at the deadline I suppose that changes things, but opening 2025 with swapping Pete for Soto kind of sucks.
I think fans don't consider the magnitude of the luxury taxes when considering these contracts. Sure Cohen can "afford" it but is Pete the difference maker that warrants that cost? Up until THE homerun most of us were probably saying no way. I love Pete but he's not worth the cost in my opinion.
Ok but then get a Bregman or Santander
cohen has other fish to fry besides the mets. His money isn’t only about the mets
Yep winker McNeil and Baty and even Marte will together not match Pete offensive numbers
Mets only made it that far because the Braves were hurt. And Jose also made us better
Who gets the luxury tax money ? The player or m l b and is luxury tax a penalty for spending ?
Teams like the A's, Marlins get that luxury tax money. That's why they are perennial tankers. But those teams eventually have to spend or they won't be eligible for that revenue sharing. That's why the A's made all those moves this offseason. The penalties for teams like the Mets yanks and dodgers are draft pick slots, and allowance for Ifa signings.
Ain’t the Mets still 70 million below last year. Come on
I’ll be ok going into this season with another proven BP arm like Yates or Robertson, then reassess at around the trading deadline and pick up someone like Vladdy or Alcántara having to trade less prospect capital than you would have to right now.
Where was. Luxury. Tax When. Yanks. Outdid. All other teams. Millions upon. Million for FA's ?
Exactly and how did owners agree to luxury tax money?
Hoping is not a good game plan
Calling. Mets. Offender is. Offensive
Marte McNeil Baty can not be on this roster this season. Why not te sign Iglesias. This team is worse then the team that finished last season
Sick of Stearns and his money ball ways. AJ Minter signing seems like a Wilponish move.
I’m
The rotation is still not great.
Mets need to Dump salary some how !! Marte or McNeil.....If they add Arenado one has to go in the package.. I would roll the dice with Arenado. He is good for 28HR, 90RBI, and .280 with a gold glove !
Arenado sucks. Better off letting new guys compete for the job.
Nor with Cohen buddy they so money there's more coming
mets arent better lol felt like they would be after soto but now its a joke. no bog bat to protect soto. so we replaced alonso with soto is all that happened
If not for pete we would have lost to milwaukee at the playoffs
That was already paid for.
Not the superstar he seemed like he was going to be, but he averaged 42 home runs and 108 RBIs. They should have paid him
Where waw the. Luxury tax when. Rangers. Signed. A-Rod ? Where was. Tax when. Red. Sox. Paying. Huge. Salaries ?
Honestly, I don't think there was a tax when ARod signed??
Thank you. The Mets should be trying to sign the best players. Tanner Scott is the answer not AJ Minter. The Mets need to bring Pete back
@ why do they need Tanner Scott?
Because Minter has a much better career ERA? Because Minter has way less walks? Because Minter has a better ERA+? Because Minter has less innings on his arm?
Why, exactly, do they need Scott instead of Minter?
Committed to the best players of which Alonso is not. So this mgt / ownership is making the right call.
Go cheer for the dodgers then 🤣 Cohen and Stearns were Mets fans before being the owner and POBO. They want the Mets to win more than you.
Alonso got greedy
Good morning
Worst 300m team in history
LGM World Champs 2025..
The Mets just spent all of their money on a Lamborghini (Juan Soto) and now are bargain shopping for the accessories
It’s funny how the Dodgers don’t have these payroll restrictions
Youre intolerable man lol
Bret. Batty,
S. Marte & Maybe McNeal. Need 2. Go .!.!
Marte Is clutch. Need him in winning time.
The. Mets are. NOT crimminals
Alonso is not equal to Walker. Alonso averages 42 home runs and 108 RBIs, Walker 27 home runs and 80 RBIs. True Walker wins gold gloves, but it is still not close
Mets won’t need vlady at the deadline. They will be sellers at the deadline
BRING PETE BACK!!!!That is all…
I never thought I'd see such big money thrown at such mediocre players. $7 mil for Winker?
That's not big money.
I’m sorry but if they do all of this and then fail to bring back their number one homegrown player just to save $10 million dollars, I will forgive them for that. I’m on Pete’s side of this.
Who gets the luxury tax money ? The player or m l b and is luxury tax a penalty for spending ?
