Bodger? Absolutely not! You are a craftsman and your attention to detail is second to none.
I think you are being far too harsh on yourself saying that you are bodging. A real bodger would slap some fibreglass reinforced filler over the rust holes and put some shiny paint over it. You are getting rid of the rust as you find it and welding in new metal. Sure, you don't have access to all of the equipment that a professional shop would have, but you are being very thorough with the tools that you have and ,best of all, you are not going to get handed a massive bill when it's all finished. I really enjoy watching how you get around problems with the tools that you have.
That's very kind of you, thank you
Welcome back glad your here I was getting withdrawals mate 😛
😊😊
Your far from a bodger Dave, that was a fantastic repair 👍
Great work very fiddly patients of a saint. Enjoyable hr spent 👍
Come all you out there in UA-cam land, give this guy loads more subscribes,he certainly deserves them,as it’s a dieing art what he’s doing🫡🫡🫡🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Hi DAVE,it’s DAVE here, just found your channel and enjoying it👍👍👍👍🍺🍺🍺🍺
Welcome aboard Dave 😊😊
Good job mate... that's correct,,the factory pushed sealant between this panels on this corners, now it's a new life, great.
Brilliant work and you are definitely not a bodger by no means.Keep them coming
Thanks Rick
A quality bodger Dave....😊
🤣
i reckon Fitzee has been watching your beed roller upgrades video to inspire his latest offerings😁
Ha, I'd love that 🤣
Bodger!! Can I bring my car to you for a week's work, I'd be delighted to have you do some work.
Craftsman.
Not an escort mind😁
Great work Dave, i love it to see.
You made that look easy dave
Great video Dave you have the patience of a saint
Thanks pal
Excellent job…! ❤
excellent
😂 you sell yourself short, the work you do is very impressive and structurally sound! As I said on Instagram you DIY Skills are extremely impressive. Being me I would attempt the otherside, because what's the worst that could happen you would use the part of the complete panel you had. Dave you are doing a fantastic job.
Thank you pal 👍
Dave, you're definitely not a bodger, a bodger would have used filler to make that corner right, but did it right, spot on. The dremel's getting a good work out aswell, 👍👍
Thanks 😊 yep the Dremel is a tidy bit of kit.
Looks factory fresh Dave.
Thanks Alan mate 👍
You sir are no bodger. Another highly skilled & interesting episode.
Thanks 😊
Great work.
Times like these, if I know I have the (valuable) original panel at hand, just use it. Life's too short. Love your attention to detail; hope the Manta is tucked up until spring :)
Well said!
phew !!! amazing, great job, well done 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Not bad for a bodger lol. Great repair David turned out spot on 👌 looking forward to the other side repair vid. See you pushed the boat out and got yourself a Dremel 👍
Hi Sid, Thanks pal, yep finaly got a proper Dremel, very good too.
good job pal👌👌
Nice repair on that Dave 👌
Thanks 👍
You say you're only bodging around in your garage, but ask yourself this: how many highly regarded escorts escorts on the show circuit have the standard of steelwork that yours does if you were to chemically strip the filler and paintof to see what they were like. As they say in the U.S. " Filler and paint makes me the welder I ain't! I don't know what you are like with filler and paint, but you have given yourself a fighting chance at success. That was pretty awesome!
Thanks Neil 😊
Nice work Dave !! shame the other end is so bad , now your having to cut your replacement panel I think id just replace the whole panel , at least then its only plug welds and you get to see what else is underneath the rear screen pinch weld
Impressive Dave, top man
Another great video Dave your very patient, like Asda every little helps lol 👍👍
Ha, thanks 😊
Video TOP
Good afternoon the gas man working in his garage 😊 So glad you repaired the panel as it made a really interesting video 👍🏻 Shame you’re going to chop up that panel but hey ho but that’s what you have to do 👍🏻 Never put yourself down Dave as you’re doing a fantastic job and the videos are awesome 🙌 Now it’s getting cold have you thought of getting a Chinese diesel heater to keep warm………🤔 I had on in my garage for my model railway and it worked a treat 😊 You can used heating oil cheap too run. It’s nearly instant heat and it kept my garage at nearly 70 degrees 🥵 And it would make a good video installing it and seeing how it performed 🤔
Hello mate, I do have one of those cheapo diesel heaters. It works ok, but it's pretty noisy and the microphone picks it up.
If you're a bodger Dave, God help the rest of us DIY'ers! Personally, on the other side I would stay clear of the vents, it's a world of grief just waiting to happen. On the subject of the Dremel, as you may remember I swear by those things, they have enabled me to do some really awkward repairs. But, I had 2 Dremels and the speed controllers failed on both. I hope you have better luck. They are available as a spare, and I changed it on one, but it failed again, they seem to be a weak point. I have 2 Silverline units, they are not as good as the Dremel from the vibration/balance point of view, but were a lot cheaper, and you can register on line for extended warranty so you can get them exchanged. However, both speed controllers failed on mine out of warranty, but as my job was an electronics engineer, I managed to fix both of them for under £5, so they are still doing the job OK for now.
Thanks for the heads up in that.
Good work Dave, very patient. You should ask Dominic Chinea for a loan of one of the mini Ranalla English wheels he is developing. Good see you using a proper welding helmet instead of the Safety Squints you see so often on UA-cam
I'd love a go at an English wheel, always amazed at what professional guys can do with them.
Very enjoyable watching your patience and talent jumping out of the pan and into the fire and ending up with a great job and results.
Thank you very much!
Oh I felt for you when you looked at the other side and it’s worse, and the sound of your voice, but you can do it Dave.looking forward to next video👏👏👏👏👏👏🍺🍺🍺🍺🫡🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Ha ha, was it that obvious 🤣
@@DavesGarageuk yea it was so comical, but seriously you are a perfectionist and really enjoyed your video, weldone Dave🫡🫡🍺🍺🇬🇧🇬🇧
Once again impressive work Dave, the right hand side (o/s) does as you say looks great. Gutted the other side is looking worse but nothing your time and efforts won’t sort out !! Great channel love the car and the content
Thanks Steve 😊
your patience is incredible dave well done
Thanks 👍
I would undo the spotwelds and cut out a larger piece of the top panel on the other side (past the vents) to put back later when you have done the repairs underneath.
Ok, makes sense not to mess the vents up I guess, thank you
You are welcome Dave. You are doing a great job. And remember, there’s more than one way to bake a cake. So your ideas are as good as any. I really enjoy watching.
Love your vids, dave your a clever man can't you lead your repairs ??
Never tried it
Nice work Dave 👍
Well done Dave, it’s those nasty tedious repairs that puts the average hobbyist off going the extra mile but I know that this car will be an absolute gem because of your expertise. 🙏👍
Thanks Phil 😊
I know your gona use irmine white : but have a look at classic van white before you decide : its a nice shade of white
awesome series Dave! I seem more inspired after watching your videos to attempt having a go myself rather than buy one all ready done, £25,000 upwards for a finished one is a bit out of my price range, so as you say…could be onto a winner here 😅…we’ll keep up the good work and look forward to more episodes.
Thanks pal 😊😊
Well done Dave fantastic work, don’t be so hard on yourself, I don’t see any bodging going on.
Hopefully I catch you before you cut up your replacement panel as I don’t think you need to.
Please look for an old UA-cam video called Project Binky, if you’ve not seen it, it’s a couple of very clever guys shoehorning a 4 wheel drive Toyota GT4 Turbo engine and running gear into a mini. It sound impossible I know. However in episode 9 they show you how to make vent slots like the ones in your scuttle panel.
Hope this helps, keep up the great work, Steve Digger
Hi Steve, Yes, I've followed binky from the start, epic job. The vents they made were both flat and regular, the escort vents are all slightly different, and the panel is curved, not impossible, of course, but more work than I've got time/ability for. Thanks though 😊
@@DavesGarageuk Hi Dave, that’s fair enough, it probably would take a little while to make a jig and set it up, however the skills you’ve displayed you’d easily be able to do it and on the flip would make a awesome video.
Whatever you decide keep up the great work 👍
Just subscribed to your channel really enjoying the content looking forward to seeing your next update all the best…
Awesome, thank you!
Great work as usual Dave even your methods to replicate replacement pieces the Dremel tool so underrated that's a beautiful Escort all your work is top quality.
Thank you, Russell. I should have bought a proper Dremel years ago, night and day over the cheapo things
looks good and how you do it thank you
I say don’t cut up the other panel, you managed to do it with the first side so do the same with the worse one, I know you can. Sure it’s a bit more to do, but experience gained and knowing you made it yourself is worth it.
blimey that was a tedious little job Dave … amazing work really good you’d never know you’d done it . Thanks for the upload super vid 👍
Thanks pal, it's the smaller patches that take the longest time, I must have spent about 10 hrs or more on that!!
Great work again Dave, amazing job forming that piece. Other side will be a lot more challenging looking forward to watching you do that job. Love the longer video’s mate
Thank you Mick 😊
Dave you made a lovely job of that
Thank you Jim 😊
👏👏👏👏👍
Persistence get it done, great job . Doing that area and the gutters on my car was the most scary part of repairs.
Also I think Fitzee taxed your bead roller motor setup, you should ask him for a thanks !
I'll have to look at that 😉
there appears to be some serious pidgoen poo welding there mate
Someone definitely let the pigeons loose on this one
Great work. It's good to see how you break down a repair panel to make it easier to manipulate the metal into shape. Can't wait to see the car finished. Do you have a link for that light on your welding helmet please? I have been trying to find something like that for a while, can't see as well as I used to 👀👀👀👀👀
Hi John, the light is just a head torch I've bolted to the helmet.
the tools needed for that repair is a half tidy sheet metal folder die grinder 4,1/2 inch grinder and a decent mig with s good welder behind i9t
Agreed, a half tidy welder being what I need 🤣
Why dont you just leave the tape on the metal while you cut around it and shape it, then remove the tape just before welding ?
It tends to get jammed up under the jig saw
@@DavesGarageuk Ah, I use a cutting disc and did not think of using a jigsaw. Good tip, thanks.
I wish I could do the Welsh accent just to say flange
🤣🤣
Hows the mk1 coming along mate ??? Is she ready for paint yet ???
A while off yet
Hi Dave don’t worry about being a bodegrbecause the state of the cars built in the 60s 70s atrocious!! So don’t worry about it,if anything your improving it👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thanks for that
Your not a bodger but a craftsman,weldone🫡🫡🫡🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thanks David 😊
Why on earth is there a scuttle behind the rear window! Any idea what purpose it serves? Is it because the fuel tank is in the boot?
I don't know, there is a fuel tank in the boot, but I think it may be to do with cabin ventilation too, maybe??
@@DavesGarageuk could be
That came out really nicely, shame the other side is worse but at least you have the panel you bought as you were expecting to need it anyway. Out of curiosity was it always going to be just the corners used from the panel you bought or if it had been bad at both ends would you put the panel in complete?
If it was rotten all along the screen edge, as they often are, I'd have replaced the whole thing, but I find, the less you cut out, the better in the long run.
Great job again.. If I may ask, what type of cutting disc do you use in your dremmel?
There are "Speedclic" pricey and you need a speedclic arbour to suit, but worth it.
Thanks very much
Hi Dave, nice work as usual! Which thickness of steel are you using for this kind of work?
Hi, 1mm steel mate
@@DavesGarageuk Thx, I'm using 1mm too on the Capri. I was a bit in doubt as some panels on the car are 0.8mm. Thanks for the reply!
Hey Dave , excellent work on the escort mate !!
I have a question about the spot weld in general !
How do you determine how many spot welds to do on a panel , apart from the obvious of how many were on it when you ground them down.
Long story short is I have a replacement panel and the old panel is toast and I'm unsure how many spot welds to d.
Sorry about the novel mate.
Cheers
Hi James, I keep them roughly 40mm apart, but that's a guide. I tend to punch out the middle and either end, then keep punching halfway between until it looks about right. I hope that makes sense.
What colour are you painting it Dave?
Ermine white
Great work as always how is the branded dremel working out . They worth the extra money??
Proper Dremel is night and day over cheapo things, I should have bought one sooner.
Further to the Dremel comment, it has died!! Didn't last very long 😢
@DavesGarageuk Oh no, is it from excessive work! Looking forward to next video!
hi do you ever use any kind of rust converter,or treatment in hard to reach areas if so which one /type please
Hi, I've tried all sorts of rust converters, I've yet to find one thar works. I simply try to remove as much as possible, and paint with high zinc paint as best endeavours
@@DavesGarageuk yeah im only a noob but my limited tests reslut in the same and wasted money, thanks for the reply
Don't think your viewers accept your identifying as a bodger! Here in New Zealand we have classrooms in high schools for kids who identify as cats (yes I'm serious, don't get me started...), so if you reckon you're a bodger fair enough, but the rest of us won't wear it ok?
Ha ha, thanks pal 🤣
