I've always admired those that do that kind of fabricating and welding work.....i never could master welding, kept burning holes all the time! Looking almost ready for nice new coat of paint, can't wait to see that! Keep up the fine work Dave. And as a fellow Welshman....Ogi Ogi Ogi! 🤟👍

Another quality repair Dave. I am not sure if it is possible to get the panel gaps crisp all around a MK1 I have come to the conclusion they varied back in the 1970’s when they rolled off the Ford production line as tolerances were different then compared to modern cars. I feel it’s part of their character and why we like them so much :)

One of the things I do with boots and bonnets when removing them is, I drill a small hole through the hinge and the mount on the panel. This gives me the exact location of the panels, by sticking a piece of wire, or the drill I used, through the hole to align the panel back to its exact position before taking the panels apart. Very nice work on a difficult task.

I've given up on Dremel Dave and bought a Milwaukee C12RT-0 M12. As a bonus I also treat myself to one of their cordless 3/8 ratchets as it uses the same battery. Just a pity all my other tools are team yellow. It always baffled my why car manufacturers in the 70's designed in areas that they physically could not apply any paint to. Restoration is a war if attrition and then one day, you walk in to the garage and realise there's nothing left to weld and Henry and the sweeping brush can have a well earned rest.

    Hi
My Dremel died the same way. In my case the power semiconductor, a simple TRIAC was blown. A bit soldering and it runs again. But yes, there are today some cheap and good ones. E.g. Lidl has here now a battery powered one.
For the heater I would recommend a simple inlet filter to keep the dirt out of the fire. A mesh bulb covered with fluffy cloth.

My all time favourite car is the mark 1 escort as I had one back in the 80s Mark1 1.3gt I bought it from an elderly lady who had stopped driving and the car was sitting up over two years at the time but it didn't take much to get her going and I had her till I needed a deposit on my first house I was very sad to see her go but needs must. Talking about panel gaps when I worked in a car factory in Coventry in the 60s and 70s I couldn't believe the difference in panel gaps considering they were pressed on the same tooling and assembled in the same jigs. Panel gaps were anything between a difference of 10mm to 12mm.

Hi Dave, for a gas man you make a bloody good fabricater. Why do you think Ford put those vents in the rear panel? So rain water would rot the shell quicker? Great work and great editing, makes it much easier to watch.

Another great job Dave, looks like I jinxed the Dremel! Like others are saying, they are just not up to the job unfortunately. I had 2 replacements from B and Q, but unfortunately I got ill for ages and didn't do anything restoration related for a long time, next time I came to use it, Dremel No. 3 packed up but it was well out of warranty. The problem is, there is nothing like them for the fine cutting jobs, so Dremel or equivalents are a necessary, albeit expensive, consumable item.

@@DavesGarageuk Yeah, sorry it was me, the harbinger of doom! I have 2 of the Silverline knock-offs that look identical to yours apart from the colour, which I have repaired electronically, but they do suffer from the excess vibration but not all the time, which I can't quite work out. I figured it can only be inferior bearings, but I cannot detect any play in any of the 4 bearings I have. It's weird, because they don't vibrate when they are new.

Having welded dozens of escorts for customers - there's another RS out in the yard waiting to get done - I can confirm that welding on a mangy Ford is a total doddle compared to welding on the cab of a Fiat 110-90 you stupidly agreed to restore. No curve on an Escort compares to the shapes you have to make to fix a bl***y Fiat tractor. Getting back to welding cars after this bas**d is done & gone will be like a holiday.
I'm pretty stoic - I have welded on close to every make & model the factories spit out - none have tested me as much as this feckin Fiat. If anyone asks you to weld up a Fiat tractor, Dave - run a mile. Life is too short..
