  • Welcome! In this video I replace all eight of the fuel injectors in my 2001 Ford F-250 named "Ms. Mildew". This job is pretty straightforward, though the passenger side gets a bit annoying because of all the vacuum lines coming off the throttle body. Make sure to double check your work before you test! Can you see the mistake I made after I finish working on the passenger side injectors?

Off topic. I have a 99 F250 5.4 and just did a timing chain swap. When fighting my way in, I learned the hard way that the driver valve cover doesn't come off unless the manifold is removed. My EGR tube was seized, and believing that was my holdup, I sawzalled it off only to discover the back of the motor was too close to the firewall to clear the back of the overhead cam, so I was forced to remove my intake. I also uploaded a short video about the fight of getting my timing cover off as that took me well over a week. But since I had fought so long and hard to get everything out of the way, I went ahead and did a lot of preventative maintenance. New injectors, new sensors, new bearings for the idlers, new oil cooler and lower rad hose, new oil pump and gaskets all around, plus cleaned all the grime off everything and did a bunch of painting of parts with Rustoleum 2x to keep things from oxidizing again, and to pretty it up a bit.
I enjoyed your video, even after I swapped my injectors, but I did learn about the various pound ratings from you and will go research what PSI mine are rated for now that I know that's variable factor.

Good on you for fighting the good fight and getting that done! I haven't had to pull valve covers or anything on either of my 5.4s...yet. The poundage of the inject is quite important. I used 19lb injectors in a 14lb application (3.0L Vulcan Engine) and the computer couldn't manage the fuel flow. Kept throwing rich codes until I figured it out and swapped in the correct injectors.

You mean like an Amazon referral link? I'm not that special I'm afraid. This was an eBay purchase anyway.

Great video for starters. I have a 2002 Ford F-250 5.4L 2V with 240,000 miles. Mine is also a CCLB 4WD. Funny thing about the injectors. My drivers side injectors look your passenger side. A bunch of surface rust below the yellow cap. So yes, I want to change them out. The passenger side doesn't look too bad and yes, these are original. However, i had this fantasy to also change out the fuel rail as mine has developed a bunch of surface rust. So I want to put a shiny new/used one in. Did you also change the fuel rail and if so where did you buy it?? I see Summit Racing has the remanufactured "yellow topped" ones for about $34 each. I think there is s core charge too. How have the remanned ones been working out. Some new Motorcraft start at $90-135.00 EACH!!!!!! I am reading that they are about 19 lbs of fuel pressure? Is that the right lbs of pressure for this truck?

The old yellow top injectors that I used are rated for 19lbs and are the correct pressure rating for this truck. 19lbs is good up to around 300hp if I remember right. The reman injectors are working great, haven't had any further fuel related issues. As to a new fuel rail, I would think summit, ebay or amazon might have something for you. If you are ok with used but good condition, car-part.com will probably have something.

My 2002 Ford F-250 5.4L with 240,000 miles just went through the Fuel Filter change. I had never done it on this truck and to my knowledge it was original. 22 years old!! Stuff came out of it that was dirty. Is it possible that some of the fuel injectors could also become clogged along the way? Also, never changed out fuel injectors either and they are original. Thoughts??

Normally a fuel filter will get so clogged to the point of you having issues with fuel pressure before it would let big contaminates through to the injectors. However, really small stuff does get through and over time will degrade the performance of the injectors. The other thing to think about is that the injectors are still mechanical if electrically fired. They have moving parts that do wear out over time. In particular the particulate mesh that goes in the nozzles wears out over time. I replaced these injectors because I had one injector completely fail open and just start dumping gas in the cylinder. It just... died. So if you have over 200k on the injectors, might not be a bad idea to replace them.

Where did you get the refurbished injectors?
    Thanks

I generally purchase them on eBay. You'll find many that are pretty cheap and listed as "new" but I don't trust those. Keep digging until you find injectors that look like the ones I used. Not cheap, but good. Also make sure you read to see if they have been flow matched or not. They don't need to be perfectly matched unless you are doing racing stuff, but you want them reasonably close.

    What is PB?

PB Blaster is a penetrating lubricant that is commonly sold at most autopart stores, at least in the Southeast US. You can also find it with most major online retailers. It can be used as a lubricant or to try and loosen up seized fasteners. In the video I'm using it to lubricate the fuel injector o-rings before installation so they don't overly stretch or tear upon insertion into the cylinder head.

Mine looks different. 97(late 96)f250...5. 4 gas engine....

1997 was the first year of the 5.4L engine. Some differences from the one in the video 2001 are a metal upper intake vs. plastic, a funny air mix valve located in the lower intake, the cylinder heads were of a slightly different design and made less power than the ones in 2001. Doesn't surprise me if the layout is a tiny bit different. I have a 1997 Ford E-150 that has the 5.4L in it.. it is a bit different than the one in my 2001 F250.
