5.4L 3-valve. Thank you. I think you just reminded me of what I forgot to do. I lost some fluid onto to top of my engine when I moved the crossover out of the way. Had to get the intake plenum out to swap out the temp sensor. Ford assembly is done before the body is set on the chassis during assembly. All of the back of the engine is easy to access and assemble while there is no body or firewall, or floorboards, or kick plates, or toe board... no fenders, grill or hood. I have a 2000 5.4 that was leaking from the crossover gasket on the thermostat side..thermostat bolts go through the intake and into the head(long bolt)..the coolant leak siezed one of the bolts and of course broke off in the head so i had to remove the intake.once removed about 3/8in of the bolt was sticking out. After pb blaster / free all and fresh vise grips i had to drill and tap but was able to avoid helicoil..has been about 4 years since with no problems but yesterday it started missing and thats why I'm here..long story short ford gaskets dont like coolant and a thermostat should always be easily serviceable...great video, great advice!
Ford has had the same issues with coolant running into the sparkplug wells for so many years. You'd think they'd listen to the customers and figure something else out. What a great engineering feat. Just spoke with Ron via telephone call. Really cool guy. Gave me advice on what to look for on my 4.6 2003 Expedition cylinder 8 misfire. Thank you Ron. I will run a compression and switch around the coils. Thank you.
In a LOT of the 4.6 and 5.4 engines, if you EVER throw a P0307 code, replace the coil pack ($50, ouch when often-repeated) and then within a month are replacing that same coil pack again, you BETTER be pulling your cam cover and checking all your followers too! 99% of the time, that 'can't find the miss' you keep patching with a new coil, is in fact, one of your intake cam followers has blown the bearings out, and excessive lash has allowed it to 'walk out' and lay in the oil galley...until it is chewed up enough to drop and destroy your valvetrain! If this happens, goodbye engine. Before that happens, if you find a cam follower off, TOSS IT (no guys, do not re-use it!!!) and replace the now-worn cam and ALL followers...the effort is WELL WORTH the effort!
Excellent!!! Thank you brother! I have 2007 Ford F-150.... In my case pressure washing was culprit. I like the have a clean motor, but sometimes that comes at a price! I usually blow off my engine, then run a fan on it for 24 hours before I even crank it, however I realize now that water won’t dry out of the spark plug ports. I always shoot blaster down the ports, and wait a few hours before removing my plugs. I heard it’s a nightmare if you break one off! Thanks again! I think I will just live with a dirty motor over causing myself these problems.

I actually watched your video, and looked in or at the area where the Thermostat Housing, was located, and I didn't see any Anti Freeze?but there is a leak in that area, it must be a small leak, but never the less a leak, because there was Antifreeze that had leaked down into #5 Spark Plug port. And I only found that out after I removed all of the COP's,plus Spark Plugs,on the passenger side, and then I proceeded to the drivers side. And ,so,I removed the Air intake cleaner, and Duck, and then the first COP I removed was #5,and that's when I noticed moister, on the surface of the COP's Spark Plug Boot, and Antifreeze down in the Spark Plug port So thanks for your video, as that was my problem, and I will look closer tomorrow,to try to see where the Antifreeze is leaking from, but thanks again for you video. .

i got one in the back yard with a stuck plug that wont budge had something leaked down in the hole now i cant get the damn plug out the bad part is is the last plug on the left and its hard to get a wrech too much crud the plug socket wont go down into the plug all the way im strugleing to get a grip on the plug
Thank you so much & May you receive your crown's in heaven for saving people &myself our first born from going to Dealership's again.Thank You so much.
GReat video. Dead on in regards to ECM's inability to determine cylinder which is misfiring the most. On my 2000 5.4 2v 8 cyl the ECM is saying cylinder 9 and 10 are the bad actors.... Will start the process of replacing COP's tomorrow, I bought ENA's fr Amazon.
So I just changed my thermostat and of course coolant did spill on to the engine. Now I have a misfiring issue. Now I know what to look for. Thank you so much for this video.
A lot of the water problems in this trucks are from the hood when it rain or car wash will affect it to seal the hood w a regular sealer and you see the difference
Ron, you might want to also mention to everyone that when tuning up engines, sometimes putting to much dielectric grease into the spark plug boots will also create a misfire condition. I fought an intermittent miss in my Escape only to figure out there was a lot of grease inside the boots. Once I removed and cleaned all the boots the problem was gone!
You have just earned another subscriber! I haven't tried what you said yet but you are clearly knowledgeable and your video quality rocks! Excited to watch more! Cheers!
I had a 03 f150 5.4 . Went 250k miles before i had to change one . I desided to change all of them . Sold the truck at 275k . The other pwner still driving it .
2007 5.4 v8 mine did this as well while running it was blowing coolant up onto battery and passenger side coil packs. Had to file 3/8ths to slip cross over pipe back in without taking alternator off or the intake manifold. Also one on the bottom of driver side that is some piece for coolant and oil. Had that one blow and mix in the engine and I caught just in time to to flush oil and coolant twice replace gasket and a few coilpacks on passenger side which were my intermittent misfires
Great video Ron! Very informative. "Engineers aren't the BRIGHTEST tools in the shed..." I think they got the last laugh on that. Irregardless, the design is quite poor. Plastic intake! Brittle hose connections. Crossover gaskets underneath! The list is long on this one...
He probably said that knowing what most people know and that is that the industry is literally catered to engineering failures passed off as must have been the best choice because at some point it's going to support the industry like making it hard for you to do the job yourself or needing a special tool regardless. A good example would be in the industry Honda likes to put power steering lines right in your way of the belt tensioner so forget about putting a socket on there or getting any kind of wrench on there they could have lowered or raised this line up to 2in but no they put it right in our way so you have to literally buy a special crows foot type ranch or something I mean and those usually come in a set and not to mention it really makes the leverage thing really hard for you so I'm a 200 pound guy that can bench press 300 lb and even I took that sucker down to the shop because I didn't want to deal with it all because of a power steering line in my way when it could have been 2 in lower... Sorry I had to say all that but I'm willing to believe even this guy knows what I'm talking about and even this guy was probably hinting at what I just said in a way because these Engineers are in fact brilliant that's what makes them so brilliant they know how to map this stuff out so the DIY guy gets pushed to the side for a minute and the industry is held up for just another minute...
Oh wow this was very helpful. I'm gonna ck out my gasket & spacer cause I just paid 700 bucks to change plugs and coils to get ck engine lite out for smog ck and it's back on again throwing P codes. This really sucks cause Ive been homeless in my 2006 E250 4.6 for over a year now finally got my inheritance and having to spend it all on ck engine crap. Really 😢😭
Great video and very informative. I will check that tomorrow since I just recently pressure washed my engine (I hate a dirty motor) and then it started acting up.
Hey Ron, just worked a security gig for Denso a few weeks ago. They're actually right down the street from you off of Adams Street over by Offroad Warehouse.
On my V10, the driver’s side rear coil boot had coolant droplets on the outside. No puddling or anything like that. Looked like condensation. Wondering if I should just do the manifold gaskets while I am at it.
I got same problem on 2010 4.6, had bunch of crusty stuff in each spark plug hole. Cleaned em all out before i pulled em. Computer said random & #5 misfire codes, i pulled intake off& #5 intake hole was full of coolant today. All new gaskets goin in tomorrow
having a misfire on cold start up only, 2008 crown vic 4.6L, replaced plugs, cleaned throttle body, egr valve, no change, pulled a p0300 code also, been chasing this about a year now, car has 223,000 miles and runs really well when warmed up, i'm stumped on this thing
Denso coils rock! That's the brand our 2008 Hyundai Entourage came with and they are still going strong with 175k miles. Also, from past experience stay away from the "Deal" brand coils. I was tempted because of their low price but ended up re-replacing them in less then 10k miles. Lessons learned about going with cheap coils.
If you are getting misfires an issue you would never suspect can be the coolant itself. The Ford garage chased a stalling issue for me for over three weeks. In the end they could not eliminate this issue and it eventually was fixed by me changing to fresh coolant. We coolant and two different metals creates a battery and the current will throw off the sensors and cause a misfire by sending the engine and ecu into a lean condition. Been chasing this issue for a complete year and had the truck into two different Ford garages. Items done to my truck: New battery New plugs New air filter New fuel filter Cleaned MAF Cleaned throttle bodies Cleaned IAC valve Checked all hoses for vacuum leaks Changed transmission speed sensor Swaped fuel pump relay Changed ECU None of this fixed the issue so the next direction was going to see if the fuel pump or regulator was going out. Changed coolant.......all problems gone. Just finished putting 2500 miles on the truck. No stalling. Not saying this is your issue but this did not throw a code to indicate a lean condition. We did get some cray electrical errors such as the Ford scan saying the engine was at 5200 rpm while idling. Most important item I learned form this is make sure your basic maintenance is up to date. I bought my truck over two years ago and should have changed the coolant in order to set a baseline. Failure to do so cost me lots of time and some money @$1700 and it all might have been the coolant aging out. Thank you for your video as it helped me compile a list of things to check.
@@JV-vy7de Old coolant can cause the metals in the engine to produce a current. This current can throw off the sensors and create an issue. The time it was most evident was we had a hard start when hot as the voltage caused an extreme lean condition and the result was a no start of very hard start . This might not be your case but it is a reason to make sure all your basic maintenance is up to date when you start solving issues. In the end mine was weak spark and as the engine got warm the fuel supplied could not be ignited after it warmed up. What threw me off was it would always start fine and drive well but once warm would stall out at a light or when foot on the brake in neutral or park. If you know the cylinder that is giving you the misfire you can swap coils between cylinders and see if the misfire follows. Hope this helps
I have exact same motor that you're making this video of the seals went out on my intake manifold yes they are flooding cylinder 7 I'm trying to find that intake manifold for my 4.6 liter engine I cannot find it at all I have called 10or15 junk yards I finally found one
You might have something there that's what happening to my Expody 5.4 liter. Mechanic changed all plugs and coils and was running great first few days and then misfiring returned. Took it back and he could not find the problem. Second mechanic was recommended to me says what your saying, moisture leak from around valve covers or therm. area. I sure hope he is right b/c this shit is costing me some serious dinero. Thanks for the video. Will let you know what was the misfire problem if he can find it.
Denso, blue streak standard ,hitachi and delphi are great choices, standard heavy duty makes the best boots then denso has decent spring boot combo which is the same as motorcraft since motocraft just boxes denso coils. Ive had good luck with all 4 brands i put them on the work trucks to see which one would give out first on these old engines. On my truck im trying standard heavy duty and they look pretty well made.
Hey Ron it was nice talking to you the other day . I was the one with the 427 Ford. I asked you why there was a idle circuit for the front carb on the 427 and you replied that having the idle circuit on the front balances out the engine for fuel delivery which I agree with . You stated that having only the center carb for the idle circuit will cause the engine to run lean on the forward banks. Here is my other question? I have a 65 GTO with the factory Tri power I have a 400 bored out .030 over 10.5 forged pistons 428 HO heads with a isky Cam 475 lift 292 duration and it only has the idle circuit on the center carb I have never had a lean condition on this engine even with the cam and 428 HO heads . The linkage is progressive. I do agree with what you are saying but I have also proved that is not true running only a center carb with the outer carbs with no idle circuit. On a progressive linkage I still don't understand why Ford put in a idle circuit on the front carb? If it was direct linkage and all carbs ran the same time yes you would need the idle circuit . Thanks for the videos very well done!
Okay think of it this way. The idle circuits themselves are not affected for the most part by the throttle plate. The idle circuits use a suction effect from vacuum below the throttle plate.
@@SandCarServices I totally agree with what you are saying in principle . All I am saying is the rest of the manufactures with multiple progressive carburetors there are no provisions for the idle circuits for the front and rear carbs and they run fine even with the performance build on my Pontiac 400 it has never had a lean condition with only one carb with the idle circuit, I think Ford might of been in a hurry to develop the 427 and put a standard Holley 4150 series with a idle circuit on this engine for the front carb when it wasn't needed. All my point is the rear carb is centered on the intake for the primary's the engine would run fine with just a idle circuit for one carb. Case in point the Chrysler 440 six pack Holley 2300 series and they ran the same set up on the Chev 427 and that was 435 HP that is more cubic inch than the 427 and they run fine with just one idle circuit Now if the carbs were not progressive the front carb would need the idle circuit . I totally agree with what you are saying and the principle but the idle circuit on my 427 for the front carb really isn't needed . I will have to get them balanced when I get the engine done . Thank you for your very informative videos they are very well done . Keep up the good work.! After seeing the hell you have been through I don't see a Ford 5.4 in my near future hahahahahah
This was actually the problem I've been having with my 97 4.6 but it was a hose over the top of the engine and sometimes the rain from the back of the hood
My rough idle was a misfire caused by dead coil. And when driving normally, the truck would start shaking as if my engine and transmission were loose when I'd get to about 55± mph, just to find out it was bc an unfired cylinder caused so much imbalance. Replace coil, all good now. Id thinking it was something really bad or a multitude of stacked issues. Thankfully was easy fix. And I have 2004 F150 5.4
Ron I just brought ford e350 with a cylinder 6 misfire.the owner explain that when the van goes in reverse it misfire. The reason I brought it was cause the miles was good but now I feel like the chances is i brought a lemon I’m scared to death I invested all my money to buy this van 😢

Had that problem with my 03 expedition 5.4 plastic part of the intake was cracked where the crossover bolts up ended up buying a new intake from Ford wasn't going to use that dormen replacement that's offered
I have a 1998 f150 Triton. I was showing code po300 Which was random misfire I look this thing over really well and saw that a hose was dripping and antifreeze In the Spark plug holes and was causing the have faulty spark.
DONT REPLACE WITH FACTORY GASKETS..A lot of the problem with the rubber deteriorating is when Ford Engineers designed it there was no ethanol in the fuel. Later on 10% ethanol which is basically like rubbing alcohol it dries and cracks the gaskets. The good thing is gasket companies like felpro have made gaskets from different material that holds up to the drying of ethanol.
I have a 2008 6.8L and the intake manifold on the passenger side doesn't match up to the head. It doesn't seem to be leaking externally but I have a PO305.
Mine was the hose above #4 that runs into the heater core was leaking antifreeze into it. I agree they aren't the brightest when making these motors. There strong dont get me wrong but so many mistakes they should have fixed down the road. I have a 99 f150 and #4 is a pain to get to
When you put dielectric grease on the ends of the plug wires, if you get some smeared on the outside of the boot & it touches the head that won't cause a short or crossover of the spark will it?? I think that's why they call it dielectric grease so it won't short out right?? I know l like asked & answered my own question but lm still learning & want to make sure lm either right or wrong!? Thank you very much for your time and understanding!!
@@billyhunt8983 Thank you! Mine is a older 4.6 & it has 2 separate l think there called coil packs? 1 on each side of the water pump. 4 plug wires go to 1 side & 4 to the other. It doesn't have individual coils per wire, but its still a bitch to change plugs & wires! Thanks again 🙂☯️
Great video thank you for the information a lot of mechanics especially really good ones would not give that kind of information to do it yourselfers They would rather you bring the vehicle to them so they could make money nevertheless thank you good job
Man, I wished that you lived near me I have the same problem and I don't trust even dealerships around me to do this job they will probably just add a sealant to the antifreeze and tell me it was a leaky hose , this was done to me already, 2 yrs ago so I just added Kseal and it was holding me till now, I think I have to take the plunge and hold my nose and hope I get a good machanic, dealership is my only safe option if I just tell them what to do and not ask for diagnosis I should be okay.
Its taking me a while to figure this one out. I have 99f150 5.4 and kept replacing coil and couldn't figure out why water was in well with no leaks. ""THE UNDER CARRIAGE SPRAYER AT AUTOMATIC CAR WASHERS""
Recently had a heater hose leaking at the firewall. After the motor got warmed up, it would start the leak, and drip onto the farthest back coil, causing a miss.

THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT INFORMATION YOU GIVE US MR. RON
Good video, I have the same problematic issues and recall seeing a bit of coolant on the left side up front and I wasn't sure where it was coming from now thanks to you're awesome video I know what to look for. Thank you kindly
Great video! This is exactly what happened to my 2003 Expedition 5.4L. My coolant leak what due to a faulty heater valve. 👍🏼
i got one in the back yard with a stuck plug that wont budge had something leaked down in the hole now i cant get the damn plug out the bad part is is the last plug on the left and its hard to get a wrech too much crud the plug socket wont go down into the plug all the way im strugleing to get a grip on the plug
Thank you so much & May you receive your crown's in heaven for saving people &myself our first born from going to Dealership's again.Thank You so much.
+Allen Orea thank you for the kind words. It's comments like that that make me want to shoot more and more videos.

Don't forget the hood to cowl seal that fails and allows water to drain on back plug Wells.
Thank you for helping me out with sparkplug issue i was having.. Now this was a great video (IN MY OPINION).. Have a great day.
You are welcome
Hey Ron your Ford knowledge is very well informed and beneficial to me you ll be definitely hearing from me
Thank you sir, we are very fortunate to have this video
A lot of the water problems in this trucks are from the hood when it rain or car wash will affect it to seal the hood w a regular sealer and you see the difference
Ron, you might want to also mention to everyone that when tuning up engines, sometimes putting to much dielectric grease into the spark plug boots will also create a misfire condition. I fought an intermittent miss in my Escape only to figure out there was a lot of grease inside the boots. Once I removed and cleaned all the boots the problem was gone!
THIS is exactly why I NEVER put even the smallest amount of Dielectric grease on the Higher mileage engines, the computer reading is too sensitive.
Great video! I am having this problem now with my E 250.
You have just earned another subscriber! I haven't tried what you said yet but you are clearly knowledgeable and your video quality rocks! Excited to watch more! Cheers!
He’s a good teacher nice keep it up man
Awesome video the P300 happened to me when I power washed my engine it started random misfire because water get in three coil packs.
I had a 03 f150 5.4 . Went 250k miles before i had to change one . I desided to change all of them .
Sold the truck at 275k . The other pwner still driving it .
great explanation of a common problem
Solid video. You obviously know what your talking about because you use Cids & pids.
Thanks for the Denso coil pak info
Oh wow this was very helpful. I'm gonna ck out my gasket & spacer cause I just paid 700 bucks to change plugs and coils to get ck engine lite out for smog ck and it's back on again throwing P codes. This really sucks cause Ive been homeless in my 2006 E250 4.6 for over a year now finally got my inheritance and having to spend it all on ck engine crap. Really 😢😭
Thank you sir for a great video and I'm going to check that on my 2005 Mustang GT now thanks again for the information
Yes sir! Makes you stop and think about everything for a while
Engineers may not be the brightest tools in the shed but they definitely are the sharpest tools in the shed. Lol
Yes, I know.
@@SandCarServices Mr Williams you are not even close to boring, You are the best i have watched yet! Very informative thank you so much,,,
Dang I wish I had a mechanic like you
I Wish You Lived in My Area...A Mechanic that Truly Cares & Not Just A Parts Changer Charging $700+ for Changing parts & Not Fixing the Problem.
On my V10, the driver’s side rear coil boot had coolant droplets on the outside. No puddling or anything like that. Looked like condensation. Wondering if I should just do the manifold gaskets while I am at it.
What a cool guy and good attitude. If I lived near his shop he'd be my mechanic
Thanks for the compliment
Heater hose was leaking at the 'T' above the passenger side coil pack causing a misfire. '2012 5.4', easy fix.
Very informative, I still drive a 2002 crew cab 5.4 and I replaced my my intake, wish I would known about this.
Ever figure it out?
@@NightmareonAnyStreet_ Nope, I drove it up until it reached 245k and sold it. I believe it was the intake manifold gaskets
Thanks for the information. Know what to look at on my 97 f-150. Have had #5 come up before.
Happening to my truck now! Tyvm for the video
Thank you for this video, I sucessfully removed and replaced the coils on my V10 Excursion, Many Thanks for your video.
Items done to my truck:
New battery
New plugs
New air filter
New fuel filter
Cleaned MAF
Cleaned throttle bodies
Cleaned IAC valve
Checked all hoses for vacuum leaks
Changed transmission speed sensor
Swaped fuel pump relay
Changed ECU
None of this fixed the issue so the next direction was going to see if the fuel pump or regulator was going out.
Been chasing a random misfire for seven months. I don't fully understand your old coolant theory. Can you clarify?
Haha hola primo. Bring me the truck. Ill fix it for you.
I just replaced all 8 of my coils on my 05 f250 made a big difference
Denso, blue streak standard ,hitachi and delphi are great choices, standard heavy duty makes the best boots then denso has decent spring boot combo which is the same as motorcraft since motocraft just boxes denso coils. Ive had good luck with all 4 brands i put them on the work trucks to see which one would give out first on these old engines. On my truck im trying standard heavy duty and they look pretty well made.
Ron, great video with very good information. big thumbs up.
Thanks! 2000 expedition here...have not seen coolant leak but number 5 keeps screwing up...
2004 crown Vic #8 misfire I do have a leak around thermostat ,but I loosened the radiator cap has net leaked since ,but yes I do have a mid under load only sometimes
Had that problem with my 03 expedition 5.4 plastic part of the intake was cracked where the crossover bolts up ended up buying a new intake from Ford wasn't going to use that dormen replacement that's offered
I had the same problem luckily I caught it quick
Certainly very informative video. Thanks for sharing with your subscribers.
I have a 1998 f150 Triton. I was showing code po300 Which was random misfire I look this thing over really well and saw that a hose was dripping and antifreeze In the Spark plug holes and was causing the have faulty spark.
Thanks Ron very helpful
DONT REPLACE WITH FACTORY GASKETS..A lot of the problem with the rubber deteriorating is when Ford Engineers designed it there was no ethanol in the fuel.
Later on 10% ethanol which is basically like rubbing alcohol it dries and cracks the gaskets.
The good thing is gasket companies like felpro have made gaskets from different material that holds up to the drying of ethanol.
Edit: only on gaskets where fuel is involved.
By the way thank you for the video and I by no means I'm taking away from your expertise just adding from my experiences only
I have a 2008 6.8L and the intake manifold on the passenger side doesn't match up to the head. It doesn't seem to be leaking externally but I have a PO305.
Great info Ron, thanks for this. " engineers arent the brightest tools in the shed"...lmao!
Mine was the hose above #4 that runs into the heater core was leaking antifreeze into it. I agree they aren't the brightest when making these motors. There strong dont get me wrong but so many mistakes they should have fixed down the road. I have a 99 f150 and #4 is a pain to get to
Well done sir !! i will check that out. Very nice!!
thank you Ron for this informative video.
Excellent video I learned a lot and you probably helped save me a lot of time
Thanks for the information I have a 5.4 I keep getting the failed engine mode
Thank you for the very informative video! Having this issue on my 03 F-150 5.4.
No there's no crossover period. It's stops moisture and corrosion.

Thank you!
Was very helpful, saved some money, did it myself ...
You're the man, great info !! FIXED.
Great video thank you for the information a lot of mechanics especially really good ones would not give that kind of information to do it yourselfers They would rather you bring the vehicle to them so they could make money nevertheless thank you good job
You are welcome
