I've heard about the Polar function, which would be the 8th function... could you please explain that? Because usually, everyone talks about how types struggle with their 4th function, but I guess the 8th would cause more problems, right?

Happy New Year, Frank! Thanks a lot for informative and entertaining videos. Love all of them. I'd like to ask you a question I am dying to get answered. Can people on autistic spectrum detect their type accurately? Do people with Asperger's or highly functioning autism have even a place within 16 Myers-Briggs personality types? I have done several tests which all said I'm an ISTJ, however I am not as tidy or organized as they are portrayed. I love planning and being orderly in some stuff, but I have a hard time to keep my house tidy. I love to-do lists and agendas, but sometimes I never follow them through. I feel like a hybrid of several types. I can't find myself really. Could you please give me a short answer here or make a video addressing autistic people and Myers-Briggs test.

I was wondering though whether or not the pairs of functions for different types of the same family work the same or if there can still be some differences in how the 2 functions work together.
For example can NeFe (entp) work differently than FeNe (esfj) because of the preferences that these types have for their dominant function?
I'd be willing to say yes since i know some esfjs that tend to neglect Ne to some extent when using Fe but i'd like to hear other people's ideas on this

I don’t really have anything worthwhile to add to your statement or any explanation for it but I just wanted to let you know that I get what you mean. I am an ENFP as well (at least that what I think, I mean I am pretty sure about Ne Dom) and my mother is an ISTJ. Boy oh boy do we fight a lot. It‘s like you said: We‘re speaking different languages. She is all “Don’t think about it and work work work” without trying to understand one bit where I am coming from. It‘s so frustrating. Buuut, it has gotten better. I don’t know how old you are or what your situation is, but it can get better. Well, it did take one or two smaller mental breakdowns on my part, but hey, you gotta sacrifice something. Might as well be your sanity. Kidding aside, I don’t know if it will help you but I got my mother to really listen to me. Several times. And now I think we kinda understand each other or at least she finally understands that I am simply not like her. I guess that’s all I can ask for.
Anyway, talked too much already. Sorry!

I developed a strong Fe critic, which used to hurt me a lot when I was younger, but now I’ve learned to use it as a suggestion for improvement and not let it make me feel like my mistakes are catastrophic (which is a slow process because I have two 1 wings - 9w1 and 2w1).

Strange, I’m INTJ but I like ENFPs (but Idc for their future much, so I think I understand your mom).
Anyway as INTJ I tell you that your mom, as opposing Ne (your dad is Ne inferior so he is fascinated by it), she fears it for your future because she thinks it gets you out the road and she wants to get you “out of the clouds” or “on the right path” so you’ll experience as few problems as possible. I may understand that you’ll find it injustice because she’s trying to kill your main energy, but I just want to let you know she does it because she loves you and thinks “doing practical stuff for my daughter>>>saying ily” (side note:you “not appreciating this” could also make her upset).
I did this comment so it’ll be easier to get in your mom’s shoes

I think the loop is actually quite a useful concept to understand how you use your cognitive functions. For example, I am an INTP, so my preferred functions are Ti and Ne. I find the most enjoyment out of going crazy with ideas (Ne) and filtering them through my logical rules (Ti). However, I flip really easily to my Ti-Si loop. I think its why I can be called an introvert; I will retreat and really process details of my life (Si) in order to discover their inner logic (Ti). It can feel quite comforting to be in this space, but it can also be stressful, especially if you seem to be stuck in it. Its only as a last resort, where my logical processing seems to have failed me, that I will switch to fully using Fe (what do other people want, how will they judge my decisions). I think a lot of type confusion comes from the fact that a lot of people use their loop and/or last function *more often* than their preferred functions. Ideally, you'd want to get to a place where you can draw upon your third and fourth function comfortably and often, without becoming stuck in them.

I'm an ISFJ, my twin sister is an INFJ. We both have anxiety and generational trauma, which often makes us appear like angry little gremlin women instead of the creative, compassionate people we should be. Our Christmas parties are fun.

Interesting. My mom is ISFJ and my dad is INFP, so same as yours but with the genders reversed. And yep, my mom has always sought to please others even to her detriment, whereas my dad has always been, like your mom, stuck in his perceptions of things and unable to accept being wrong.
As an INFP I have tried to avoid this pitfall of self-righteousness, having watched my dad ruin so many of his relationships because of it. Secretly feeling like I'm better than other people is something I struggle with from time to time, though the feeling is usually short-lived since I then instantly think I'm the worst person ever for feeling that way in the first place.

    • @BigGrabowski
      @BigGrabowski 2 роки тому +7

@@thepoetandtheprimrose3790 It's been thought that mental health plays a lot into the results we sometimes get on these tests. My mother was born to a verbally abusive home, and my father was smothered as his mother's favorite child. If they were given more balance, they would likely have different results. In my teen years, I kept getting INFJ as a result, but as I grew, my teenage depression lifted and I became less rigid and pretentious in how I viewed other people. I no longer felt I needed to teach others, but to help them teach themselves. Rememember: I outwardly am an abrasive gremlin, totally not how I_FJs should theoretically be, so maybe retake the test thinking more about how you handle yourself, rather than others, and see what you get.

    • @thepoetandtheprimrose3790
      @thepoetandtheprimrose3790 2 роки тому +7

@@BigGrabowski I'm sure mental health plays a role in how we perceive ourselves; I imagine that we would get inaccurate results if we took the test during a period in which our mental health was floundering. Taking the test when you are in a healthier place is good advice.
As I've learned more about the cognitive functions, I've seen how it's not really possible for one's personality to change. (Let's keep in mind, too, that personalities are spectra, and not stereotypes.) My theory is that people confuse personality with character. Your personality is a built-in thing, your character is how you manifest it. Stalin was allegedly an INFJ, but so was Jesus. In my view, any type can be a good person or a garbage person, because it's your character that matters, not your personality type. And on that note, it sounds like you've really grown yours over the years, despite your struggles. Well done :)
As for me, I have taken the test at various points throughout the years, during different stages of my life. And I always get INFP.

I'm an INTJ with an ENTJ father and an ISFP mother. I found this dynamic rather interesting because whenever they have a disagreement on making decisions I'm usually the problem solver that will provide a middle ground (with a slight Te preference). My dad will often tell my mom that she should stop relying on what makes her feel good and go for the more practical option while my mother will not let go of her personal preference. What I usually bring to the table (if they ask me otherwise it's interesting to observe in the dark) is that there is often this "bridge" between Te and Fi that they don't usually see. In many cases, Fi exists for a reason and more often than not the Te and Fi will point to the same thing. When I point that out the problem is usually resolved.
Now, that dynamic works out great until both of them insist I should go out more and "experience" things...

INTJ here, i had the same issue when i was in elementary school. more specifically 3rd and 4th grade. i've kinda reduced it to "that was just a kid thing." and moved on from it. it was less "bullying" per se. but more of a trying to fit in WAY to hard. and failing tremendously. not to say that there was no bullying. but the majority of why i felt like everyone hated me was do to the fact that i was trying to hard to "fit in". trying to hard to make everyone like me. when what i was really doing was trying to change myself to seem more likeable. it was ultimately the life lesson of just be yourself. let people like you for who you are. people saying that they hate you, or simply not liking you will always be around. but that's just them oversimplifying something that they don't like about you as simply "they don't like you." and especially as kids they don't recognize it as an oversimplification. as well as it's simply not understanding that it's an oversimplification. and taking it at face value. that definitely makes it worse. kids can be brutal.

I think that could be said of all the families honestly! When you share functions it makes it that much easier to communicate with someone, so when you share all four but prioritize them differently it makes for some great teamwork. Same! ENFP (me) with ISTJ sis and ESTJ dear friend = never-flagging enthusiasm for each other's company as well as fantastic teamwork. Honestly my sister and I had just one high school class together, and the teacher was forced to move us away from each other because we couldn't stop chatting. We also aced every test he gave. As adults, we have tackled enormous challenges together and are the most natural teammates ever. Same w my ESTJ friend; we have shut down restaurants and social events without even noticing because we are so engrossed in conversations. Our record is a 48 hour long text dissection of early American immigration patterns and how they've influenced both our families and the nation at large culturally and politically. We love sharing books and are fantastic idea bouncing boards for one another. Plus, both he and my sister are two of the only people who make me feel safe enough to share the darkest of my emotions or thoughts with because they never judge me for stepping outside the optimist box. In fact we all help each other grow emotionally as we can work out frustrations together and even admit weaknesses, struggles, and the worst, our own perceived failures -- so hard for our high achieving goal-oriented selves. I have many friends of all types, but this "family" of types are precisely that for me.

As an ENTP I can tell you the Ti-Si loop can be a doozy. It's like a lot of personal self-reflection. Like a lot a lot. But it's thinking wise and to me it's focused on self-improvement, but with Ti which makes up its own logic it can spiral into making a mess of things real easy. It's a lot of "What my inner workings are doing". And "How do I rearrange them" sometimes even "How do I change them" and "Oh they pulled themselves apart let's see why" It's a lot of experimentation mode at least with the xNTPs. Probably with the xSFJs as well.
In short the "Ti-Si" loop is sort of like a big series of experiments in your head where you're both the scientist and the Guinea pig.

It is easy to be organized an tidy once as an Entj you make the connection: " how you do laundry is how you do everything" meaning a messy pile of clothes equals a messy set of habits, messy relationships, messy professional image. I think this video can also be helpful when it comes to typing yourself and the confusion that can come with it. For example, when I tried to type myself, I would get so confused when I found other types relatable. I initially got INFP on the 16 personalities online test, but seeing that the stuff ENFP or ISTJ says on FJ’s skits were so relatable, I started to question whether or not I really was an INFP. So, I think understanding families is a great way to help you try to type yourself. The families are probably why I found the other types to be so relatable, and it helped me narrow it down and finally feel comfortable in saying I’m an INFP.

You know what, FJ? You surprisingly surpassed my expectations for the quality of your observations and categorization.
Yes, I have observed the same patterns that you do and came to the conclusion that types represent different parts or aspects of reality based on the elementals theory. However, I was not able to categorize them as properly based on their functions. I still struggle with that because I doubt the current stack and try to deconstruct the premises untill I get to correct information.
However, the format of your observations do fit with the current categories and stereotypes of the types. But I don't think necessarily that this is their actual functioning as well.
I do think that instead, there may be some elements that we are not aware of and that changes the dynamic completely. For instance, if we go by Jung where introverts and extroverts are locked in their respective orientations, the whole mbty stack falls apart and we need a new way of organizing them.
So if indeed I'm an INTJ, the difference between the Ni-Ti of INFJs and Ni-Fi of the INTJs is the difference between forming categories Ni-Ti for INFJs and establishing the rules for such categories Ni-Fi of INTJs.
Thus, an INFJ works by the rules that are already inside a system and organize based on that, Ni-Ti. However, an INTJ would make his own rules or criterias and then struggle to organize them because it would essentially need to make a complelty different hierarchy Ni-Fi.
Which makes me wonder, is the INFJ more closer to an INTJ or is it the INFP?
What is the criteria for which types are more similar? Is it their temperament or their domminant? If that's the case, the temperament between an INFJ and INTJ is different, but their domminant is the same. Socionics states that the domminant is the most important function of the ego. If that's the case, then that means that Ni domminants should be more similar than they would be with different types. But at the same time, based on the Quadra and your video, types seem to be more different even if they share the same domminant function. Thus making the socionics assumption to be flawed. So what is the truth here?
Also, how do we know that an INFJ is locked only to an Fe-Se framework and can't use Fe-Ne? You yourself in this video talked not only about people but also made peculiar intuitive jokes which relate more to Fe-Ne than Fe-Se. So can we really say that an INFJ actually uses more a sensing function than an intutive one? Especially when the former is his inferior, Se?
If that's the case, then the same would apply to an INTJ as well. An INTJ as an intuitive would be more able to use intuition than sensing. Therfore, making intuitive guesses Te-Ne, and maybe then if he's more conscious of his inferior Se, to have evidence to back this up as well Te-Se. But we all know what Jung said about Ni domminants. That we are some kind of crackheads. If anything, that reject the hypothesis that an INTJ as Ni domminant would be able to deliver concrete Te-Se proof and not some intuitive Te-Ne extrapolations based on the data.
Also, not to mention that all of this is based on the premise that I started of, that of Ti being categorization and Fi being the rules or principles. However, it could be the case that Fi is categorization and Ti is the logical principles. Or that even Te could be categorization. After all, the stereotypes show more that Te is about categorization than Ti. So wouldn't that then mean that maybe an INFP is better at categorizing because it uses Te instead of Ti?
So, again, what is the truth?

The INxJs have the opposite issue that I have as an ENFP. INxJs are so set on establishing their truths that they do not allow themselves to have faith. They have an amazing skill at seeing the future for themselves and the path to get there that Ne is SCARY. Because Ne contains all the possible futures, I myself, do not see a set future infront of me and have to have faith that no matter which future will lay in my past it will be an acceptable one. Once an InxJ can have this faith in their future, then maybe they can start to Ne-Fe/Te loop.

    • @carissahill3414
      @carissahill3414 2 роки тому

Also Ne is not just some sort of extrapolation. An extrapolation by definition is an estimate or conclusion based on data. Ne is none of this. Ne is like having an ocean of a world in front of you and comparing and contrasting that world with itself and any other Ocean that you can imagine. Ne is filled with shinning objects that one can grab on to pull in front of them to examine....maybe grabbing as many of them as they can hold onto to examine... but by grabbing onto these shiny objects to examine them there is a force that has "been created" that pulls that objects up and away from you back into the ocean and if you don't keep track of it as it goes away, it may be lost.... though there are countless objects to grab your attention next.... and Si has memory of all that it has once held in its hands... an inprint of sorts to remember it by....... That experience is nothing like what I see on the faces of INxJs

Si-Ti loop based one's thinking on what has been done/observed already making it safety/past focused. on the other hand Ne-Fe loop based other's feeling on what can be or the collective unconscious.
The primary and tertiary functions are "optimistic" in how they process/perceive things, especially the third that's why its referred as the "child" function. Meanwhile the secondary and inferior functions balances the personality with its "pessimistic" approach; the secondary "parent" function takes care of the "child" and advices the primary to not go overboard while the inferior feeds off what the primary is greatly capable off. "Embracing the loop" makes the person overly optimistic or pessimistic depending on the loop one is engaging. The key is the balance between the two loops within the primary cognitive stack.
As an example, an ISFJ primary Si benefits the Ne inferior so that it is no longer afraid of what the future might bring because it already observed, prepared and disciplined itself with Si allowing an ISFJ to transition into an ENTP temporarily. The Ti child boast itself of knowing what the truth of the matter is but Fe parent is there to ensure that the child does not become condescending and be of service to others bringing about the ISFJ's sense of responsibility.

Good to see a quadra video here.
I favor more the theory that opposite quadra types relate better than same quadra types - which matches my experience; it's like other gammas are trying to occupy the same space but take things in a completely different direction; alphas, instead, in the right circumstances can be very cooperative/loyal.
. . .also to understand quadras from perceiving/judging axis rather than their possible loops; still an interesting take nonetheless because the loops are real.

The understanding the types in your language family is so true for me!
Like, currently I think I'm an ENFJ (though I'm still on the fence), my siblings are ISTP (almost certain), ISFP (65%, sure), and ESFP (no doubt about it), I find that I understand my ISTP brother more than any of my other siblings can, and that my ISFP and ESFP siblings seem to connect and just vibe together the most.
I think of in terms who gets along the least, it would be my ISTP sibling and my ISFP sibling and me and my ESFP sibling, though, they all annoy me a lot to be honest, but that's life lol

I thought you were gonna talk about actual families, and as soon as I thought it through, I noticed that that wouldn't really be feasible for 16min.... this is really interesting!
Building on that and lots of comments I see though - could you make a video showing parent child relationships when they're from different MBTI families? That would be pretty cool =w=

THANK YOU FOR INTRODUCING ME TO SOCIONICS
I'm reinvigorated by the different perspective on Cognitive Functions ("Information Elements" in this theory) & their version of the Stack ("Blocks" or "Model A") makes total sense to me & gives me a less ambiguous, more painfully forthright, evaluation on how Shadow Functions (ID & Super Ego Blocks) motivates me to act like an effing weirdo
Note for those who are wanting to connect to Socionics via their type: it's a different system & not always directly translatable from MBTI. You'll ultimately want to determine your Model A Type based on your understanding of your personal Cognitive Functions. But in general, E××J & E××P essentially share the same stack order as their MBTI, while I××J & I××P have to flip their J/P to get the same MBTI stack order (I××J = I××P & I××P = I××J). Also, there seems to be a totally different acronym system too.
    It's really fun, thanks FJ

This was very helpful since I was already pondering the Si and Te overlap of my ENFP brother, ESTJ father, INFP friend and ISTJ colleague.
Also my ENFP brother: "I think I want to be an ISTP today because "Virtuoso" sounds cool and I am soooo introverted, you can change right?"
The two of us taking a walk and talking MBTI was basically an extended cut of Dear Kristin`s video on Ne vs Ni in real life (I am INTJ) 😂

That's true. ESTPs seems chaotic but I always felt we were talking the same thing vut with different priorities. Now with ESTJs for exemple it feels we don't live in the same world, we always need to be really shallow and have small talk because if we go 10cm deeper we will have a little Armageddon... This Holiday Season with elections next year was all about this.
I heard about quadras looking for Socionics, why they use INFp for INFJ and INFj for INFP for example? I never understood that.
I would appreciate a video with 8 functions as inferior, like the key to evolution

A set of families arranged by the directions of the cognitive functions would present another interesting discussion. For example, ISFP, ISTP, INFP, and INTP persons have their perceptive functions extraverted and their judging functions introverted. This arrangement makes attractive sense because perceptions come from outside the brain, and decision-making judgment happens inside the brain, so an extraverted source of perceptions and an introverted source of judging seems to present less confusion for the cognitive activities of these individuals.
Other sets of four types have different cognitive function direction pairs, leading potentially to more confusion about the comings and goings of data about the world and an individual’s interactions with that data. Sorting out all of these details is not a trivial task, and requires careful observation and analysis.

I'm an ISFP and I personally tend to use Ni and Te when in a work environment, I don't like it very much and makes me stressed with all the thinking going on whitch right now in my life in in highschool and because of all the online school I stop doing work as I really hate all the logical and unaesthetic thinking but now I'm in highschool and I am stuck in a rabbit hole as now I don't do any work and when I try to all the thinking makes me very stressed and when I get stressed I get dissociated whitch for me personally is very scary. Anyways when I'm at home or in a social environment I use Se and Fi it's very comfortable for me whitch is why I like to talk to people or be at home, I can just simmer in my feelings and chill not having a care in the world, that's another thing about the online school when I'm at home in my Se Fi environment and like I just said when I'm there I don't have a care in the world so I just didn't give af about school and just relaxed

I’ve overthought my personality type into complete nonsense at this point.
I am either: 1) an INTP who has really developed her Fe over time, 2) an INFP, 3) a socially anxious ENFP or 4) an ISTJ with ADHD because that would be an interesting thing to consider. I thought I was an INFJ but I use Ne.
I’d love to say this video cleared it right up but my brain is hellbent on making it more confusing.

what is the goal of your F and T, to serve yourself or to serve others? when processing things, are you doing it with your nuanced personal morals and values in mind, or your nuanced personal logical framework? is your F or T detached from the self? are you willing to make F or T compromises as long as it helps people?
example: Te won't need to get the full truth as long as it gets the job done. Ti isn't okay with these holes and inconsistency and needs to satisfy that to move on
Fe doesn't need to follow its heart as long as people are pleased with it. Fi isn't okay with moral ambiguity and self-dishonesty and needs to satisfy that to move on

I wonder are you able to know your enneagram? I feel for you when trying to figure out my enneagram. It appears that I am a void 3 so I am not sure if that makes me a 3 since that is the only one that stands out to be what I am definitely NOT. I feel like I have cycled that enneagram several times already had it rephrased to me in multiple ways, taken test after test that just equal-weight it. Reminds me of a test I took in 7th grade for whether I was right brained or left brained and they made me take it several times till the results came out to not be equal-weighted.

Which also actually reminds me of that dancing girl illusion that you are supposed to be able to see spinning one way or the other depending if you are right brained or left brained and I can make her do the can-can dance if I want to. Of course no one can see it but me though. I wonder if you can switch your cognitive functions around fast like I can with my right/left brain

You know, at first I was really interested and excited that there is such a thing as “families” regarding the types. I was also very impressed by your mathematical skills. But after **checks time** 49 seconds all I can think about is that your hair is really going places. Also wondering if it has always been this mesmerising. Anyway, just wanted to let you know. Will continue the video (and later on the comment) to give you some normal feedback. Hopefully.
    ….
    ….
Here it comes. The rest. The truth untold. The- alright, I will get to it.
I really do like your videos, Frank. They are usually not only informative but also funny and easy to watch and comprehend. If that makes sense. Personally I am more in favour of videos that get a bit more serious or “scientific” if you will. I especially enjoy learning about the cognitive functions and how they’re working but also on how they are interacting with each other. I am at a point where I am not really sure about my personality type (although I have tendencies) and I feel like learning about functions etc. is far more helpful to see where I may fit in. So I really appreciate these videos and I‘m always happy when you share them! 😊 I also love how you don’t edit it out if you mess up a little. It’s charming and authentic. Unless it is on purpose, then shame on you. But continue, it’s still fun to watch.
Anyway, keep up the good work. Stay healthy, awesome and have a great new year 🍀
P.S. I‘d love to see more videos on how the types interact with each other and/or which would “technically” be more suited. You mentioned that types of the same family have it a bit easier to understand one another, which makes sense but then wouldn’t it make more sense if a type‘s “ideal match” would be of the same family? 🤔 Would also interest me in regards of friendships and basically any form of relationships.
