A few things to note / common questions: - These are solely my opinions and if yours are different that’s fine. This video is purely for entertainment. - I did not forget any engines (LSA, LS4, Super snake) etc. I simply stuck to the newer and highest production volume engines to keep the video a reasonable length. I might do a video on older ones eventually. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
The entire LS engine series shares the harmonic balancer problem. The LS6 valve spring failure was actually quite rare and those engines were often thrashed at the track.
The ls2 is huge in australia and almost bullet proof. The l98 L77 variants with DOD or active fuel management had lifter failures but cam and lifter package fixed that pretty easily
14 GT500 owner here, can only confirm everything you said about the trinity engine. It's really something special glad to see it getting the respect it deserves
Trinity is good but not special. I'd argue that the run-of--mill LT1/LS1 are special precisely because of their ubiquity. Sure, they are everywhere and very familar, but that is what makes them special. Those engines democratized the hot rod V8; they feel boring because everybody has one. THey are miracle engines because they provide awesome performace to the everyday man.
Those 5.8 engines are off the hook! Before settling on the 7.3 Godzilla, I even thought about swapping the 5.8 into my ‘06 gt. The 5.8 is absolutely insane.
@@taylorc2542 well but doesn't that make something special when it's not that available everywhere, of course the LS1 is a great engine but like you said it's very common. The trinity on the other hand is very rare and sounds like nothing else
@@lordsilvis1048 that would have been a real cool engine swap, still can't believe they managed to keep the 7.3l so compact heard it takes less space then the 5.0 Coyote
@@blaspheed ls7 also has the titanium rods, sodium filled exhaust valves, and "dry" sump. far fewer LS9s out there and they're driven a lot less than LS7s so I think that's a big reason for the difference in perceived reliability
The 6.1 hemi might be the real goat of the big hemis. The stock internals are said to be better than the 6.4, and so is the base "block" or platform as far as custom-built motors go. Hell, it's been said that even the modern 5.7s has a stronger factory setup in it than the 6.4, and you can get a 5.7 to do hellcat numbers easier/more reliably than a 6.4. My point is, you missed one, and kinda underrated the other.
@@mcspartan5822His point is that the 6.1 is better for boost than the 6.4 and it deserved a mention on this list. The 6.4 definitely doesn’t set any kind of bar and no-one’s calling it’s internals fantastic. 6.1 HEMI’s are considered the most reliable hemi motor to date and can expect to see 250,000+ miles with proper maintenance, can easily handle 600+hp on stock internals, make great power stock (425hp/420lbft), are easily available for a good price, and have a massive aftermarket and tuning potential.
You definitely choked on the Hemi front. The 5.7 was also rated upto 395 hp. The 6.1 was a beast, and you've forgotten the Redeye, Demon and Demon170 at 1025hp. Clearly not a Mopar guy at all... lol
My 5.7 has been absolutely perfect, and is silky smooth on acceleration, and the other points you made are valid as well. Sticking it in the same category as the LS6 is weird to me considering how much more reliable, common, and in some cases more affordable the hemi is. And leaving the 6.1 out has me questioning this list entirely. And this is coming from a Corvette fan
Ford Modular V8 1991-2009 is the best engine design ever. The 2v 4.6 variant is the most reliable fuel-injected motor ever sold commercially. The 5.4 4v was the first engine to take a car to 300 mph. And Koenigsegg chose the 4.6 4v as a base for their V8s. Bonus point: those are the best sounding V8s.
@@dill2576the 05-09 gt500 5.4 4v that was referenced in the video is included in this and obviously that made good power. Not to mention the 4.6 4v from the 96-04 cobra
@@dill2576 Arguable at the least, especially given that the 4v 5.4 was used in the GT and had at one point been used to achieve a new land-speed world record for a production vehicle.
As an australian we're very lucky with the LS lineup, the holden commodores had verious LS engines. L76/LS2 was in the VZ and VE SS, L77 was in the VF SS series 1, LS1 was in series 2 VT and VX commodores, LS3 in some holden clubsports and VF SERIES 2 COMMODORE, LS7 in some commodore senators, LSA in VF gtsr and even the LS9 was in the HSV GTSR W1 commodores
Gen 2 Coyote is probably one of the best engines for making high power off of. Most coyotes making over 1000+ hp are based off of Gen 2 coyotes. Even the Predator and Voodoo are based off of the Gen 2 Coyote. Engine definitely deserves A or S Tier, as we wouldn't have gotten the Voodoo or Predator Engine without the Gen 2 Coyote.
Predator and 2nd gen Voodoo are based on the gen 3. The first gen Voodoo was based on the gen 2. And the Predator deserves S-Tier, since it powers the quickest street car in the world being Snot Rocket on a stock block, OEM heads, and stock crank. All it needed was MMR valvetrain, con-rods and cylinder sleeves and it makes 3000 hp. Fathouse has been pushing it to 1600 on a fully stock motor. Even bone stock, the engine is described as being the most responsive and well-designed American V8 out there by several car journos. The sound is heavenly as well, and it now powers a supercar killer and a race truck.
I'm old school. I love old Big blocks. 383, 413, 426 wedge, 426 Hemi, 440 Six pack. The big block buster 340 six pack, Ford 390, 429 GM 409, 427, 454. These engines rule and can make wicked power for not that much money. No computers required.
I was disappointed not to see any big blocks. The 454 is a work of art, currently rebuilding my dads 454SS and boy is it a dream to both work on and drive.
The lt4 was also in a few Camaros and firebirds as far as I know but yes your definitely right with the corvette and the lt5 I still have a couple customers with lt5 cars that come in
The LT4 was, as you say a single-year engine for the Corvettes, but it was put in 96 Grand Sports and ALL 96 Corvettes with the 6-spd manual. The next year, the LT4 was also available as an option in 97 Camaro SSes and Firebird Firehawks...very few were made of either and that combo remains rare and highly sought after.
Missed quite a few modular v8s, 4.6 2v, 5.4 4v cobra etc & I would’ve chucked in the l77 or l98, not having cathedral ports made them stand over the ls2 quite easily. Otherwise, nice list
@@Jayden4.6 just not when it rains, it's got an lsd but in the rain the back end breaks loose, cant complain too much though it only cost me my time to build.
I appreciate your knowledge of the L98. If the L98 was included, then the 5.0 found in the Foxbody's should also be on the list along with the early LT1's in my opinion but I think starting at the LS1 on this list was the right move. I own a 1990 Corvette and I wouldn't rank the L98 too high. It has good torque stock but it's pretty limited in power output. Anything above 400-500 horse requires new heads and it only had 255 horsepower in the later years of the C4. The torque is fun but personally, I'd rather LS swap my C4. Same can be said for the LT1 and early 5.0. If you want good power, you're just building your own motor.
Terminator owner here, my car is old yes but with headers and a good exhaust, it makes one of the meanest V8 notes I have ever heard. That’s before you factor in the screamin eaton, or the whipple whines of these cars
just wanted to mention a difference between the VooDoo and the Predator. Voodoo has a flat-plane crank, which gives it that beautiful sound you talked about, where as the Predator went back to the original cross-plane crank like the 5.0s have, which is why it goes back to that gumbly V8. great video! just the one thing i would have mentioned for those 2 engines!
yeah so is the predator a voodoo just with a supercharger and a cross plane or is it a coyote gone up to 5.2L and a supercharger like which way is it. also i know the voodoo is based on the coyote but hope you understand what i mean
It’s not a bad engine, just rating it relative to everything else here. If you enjoy it that’s all that matters, I am just a random dude on the internet lol. Hope you still enjoyed the video!
Definitely some great ones in there, wanted to keep the video a reasonable length. Maybe I’ll do an older era tier list eventually. Thanks for watching!
@michaelthebarbarian3380 The 351C was the most handicapped engine in PS drag racing for a reason. King of smaller displacement V8s of the era, including the small Chevys, heck, the had the largest weight breaks in PS.
The LS2 was also found in the '06 and '07 CTS-V. I've owned an LS6 in my '05 CTS-V, and I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone have a valve problem with theirs and I was very active on the CTS-V forums and have "talked" with a lot of owners over the years. I supercharged mine at 35k miles and sold the car at 82k. Never an issue. Just FYI.
@@running2redlineI had an 05 LS2 GTO that was BULLETPROOF until I got literally hit by a bus (that totaled it). I had over 220K miles on it. I drove it everyday and it never let me down. It sounded incredible with the bullet muffler setup I had along with a few other goodies. It pulled like a freight train until the end with minimal repairs over its entire lifespan. I have a sixth generation Camaro SS now that’s much faster and handles better but I still miss that car every now and then 💪🏾🇺🇸🔥🇺🇸🔥🇺🇸🔥✊🏿
I think LS3 is S-tier and LS7 is A. The 3 is an incredibly balanced and reliable package, at a good price, with extreme potential and no fancy exotica. It's the LS of LSs. The LS7, while awesome, really does blow up too much to be S-tier, IMO.
I have a LS6 C5 Z and it's bullet proof. It should have gotten an A in my book. Of course I changed out the valve springs but no issues at all at 70K miles.
@@fellippegalletta6827 I think it's more like ranking the US E36 M3 higher than the Euro-spec. One is a cooler, more exotic engine, but the other is 80% of the way there for 1/10th the money and is bomb-proof. Like I said, I think the LS3 is the LS of LSs. The LS is great because it's an awesome compromise of cost, reliability, and performance. I'd argue that no engine ever made in the history of the planet does all that better than the LS3. I think the LS7 gives up too much in the first two for what it gains in the latter to be S-tier. A-tier still makes it one of the all-time greats. If it was genuinely unreliable then I'd knock it way down. Also, exotic? If we're looking for exotic, then the last thing I'm after is a 500hp LS. It may be an awesome motor, but eventually you'll get tired of being rolled on by junkyard-turbo 5.3s and K-swapped Miatas.
This is a solid list, but you underrated the LS2 in my opinion. The LS2 is a downgrade to the LS3 because of power output, but a faulty harmonic balancer is an easier flaw to fix than timing chain tensioners or faulty valve guides. I would have it in the B tier or even the A tier.
In hindsight I couldn’t agree more, just had a bad personal experience at first, but since I upgraded the balancer 6 months ago I’ve had absolutely zero issues even on a 2000 mile road trip. Definitely a great engine, thanks for watching!
Agree. Bought a 2005 C6 M6 z51 3Lt in 2014 with 28k on it and put an Edelbrock SC on it, AR no cat headers, Borlas and put on an ATI balancer and pinned it during the SC install. Now with 70k flawless miles 478 rwhp/500 trq at 3 lbs of boost…tons of grunt and put this together with longevity in mind for my one and only “go fast” car.
Not going to lie, I was worried you wouldn't give the Hellcat the respect it deserves. That supercharger whine lives in my dreams. There are days where I still can't believe I have a TRX because I never in my wildest dreams imagined owning a 100K+ vehicle. Never give up on your dreams folks. Hard work pays off.
Congrats that’s incredible. Reaping the rewards of your labor is the best feeling. As for the hellcat, I can’t stop smiling every time I hear or see one. Thanks for watching!
Nice video, I have an LS3 in my G8 and it is awesome. Even though I'm living in Colorado at 6,000ft above sea level the NA 6.2 LS3 still gives me plenty of power and speed with just simple bolt ons and a tune. The 5.2 Voodoo is my second favorite, a GT350 would highly be on my list of next cars, the only issue is the reliability of them.
That’s sick man, the LS3 is one of my favorites for sure, interesting to hear about the altitude factor. You definitely have good taste in the voodoo as well. Thanks for watching
@@running2redline Yeah not many people realize but us folks at higher altitude have a bigger struggle at making power due to the thinner air up here. A lot of people here recommend going boosted since it is easier for those to make power this high up as opposed to NA builds. And np man, good stuff. You should definitley do JDM motors next!
@@PontiacFan4Lifelmfao it will at some point. The DOD system is trash as shit. Never known why Chevy put it in. Maybe in Australia they have a ECU that doesn't have that function. Might be over 3k to get it, but it would be worth it.
All Ford engines on here not surpassing the 6 liter with the power there pushing out is impressive, just imagine if Ford really designed some 6 liter engine. (Even though they did come out with the 7.3 Godzilla)
@themechanicred I have a 2020 Mustang GT. It's not a 0-60 car. But once you get past 3000 rpm it really hauls. Top end pull is very impressive for a 'stock' engine. However, there is healthy mid-range torque. On the roads I drive in Arkansas 3rd gear is all you ever need.
I am a Mopar guy and I respect this tier list, and agree with most things on this tier list. However you forgot to mention the Hellcat HO engine. This engine was first introduced in the Demon, and made 840 HP with race gas. And later put in cars such as the Challenger and Charger Redeye, and the Challenger Super Stock. This engine is a different variant of the Hemi HO/Hellcat motor because of different internals and supercharger. I would bring up the other variant that is used in the Demon 170, how ever the car hasn't been sold to anyone yet, so we don't know the reliability. Good tier list!
Yes I did, I hoped that by putting the regular hellcat engine in S tier it would be inferred that all of those belong there as well. When it comes to the ultra high power V8s dodge seems untouchable. All phenomenal feats of engineering. I’m glad you enjoyed and welcome to the channel!
Considering all the variations of Chevy engines you listed it would not have taken much more effort to add one or two more HO Dodge engines since the are the highest output of all?
I think you should’ve done the 4.6L 4V Supercharged Terminator V8 that was in the 2003/04 SVT Cobras because that was the granddaddy that became the 5.4L Condor and 5.8L Trinity. Also, there are differences between the voodoo and the predator, the predator went back to a cross plane crank and was built in a stronger block. The voodoo had two generations of engine. The first generation was pretty problematic and the fact that it had very bad oil consumption problems that they worked out later on with the generation two video that came in the 2019 and 2020 Shelby, GT 350s. However, just my take I believe you should’ve put the Terminator Eaton Supercharged 4.6L 4V DOHC engine one of your Ford engines.
Agreed! The terminator was basically americas Supra. It had forged internals for the factory you could throw a bunch of boost at them before cracking them open. That car helped put 1320 video on the map
I would have to agree with you with the Dodge 6.2 supercharged V-8. It is incredible motor, that supercharge howling at high speed is an incredible sound to be heard.
The 5.7 continues to be a sleeper and I love it. I’ve had 3 vehicles with it and the 6.4. Even though the latter was the most powerful I’ve had, my current 5.7 Jeep has been more enjoyable. After modding it, I’m making Jeep SRT power. One could ask why I didn’t get an SRT in the first place, but that wouldn’t be much fun. The 5.7 platform is great for building up which is why I would’ve had it in the B or even A tier

Honorable mention to the Ford 7.3 diesel. Maximum reliability because it didn't make enough power to hurt itself and avoided emissions control. I also just love an old diesel knock/clatter. Turbo, tune, and pipes gives you a nice whistle, too.
I wanted to keep the video length down, if I did every V8 ever made it would be a multi hour video. I plan on breaking things up more into a series, and since older engines seems so highly requested I’ll likely make that happen. Hope you still enjoyed and welcome to the channel!
Damn dog that ls2 placement hurt lmao. The balancer failing having that wobble happens on ls2 and ls3’s. In my experience I’ve replaced them on both motors about the same about of times. My ls2 was at 150k miles with tracks days but I’m rebuilding it for a stroker
I own an LS2 vette rn and I love the engine, but it has 36k miles and is on its third balancer (not OEM now). So that came from my personal experiences, but yours may be entirely different and much better. Hopefully the video was still entertaining, thanks for watching and welcome to the channel.
@@running2redline don't get me wrong I loved the video to! -oh my god man 3rd balancer???? that's insane did i hope you went with an ATI balancer. i changed mine when doing my cam at 110k miles, very slight wobble. which makes me think they weren't installed right or something isn't sound in your motor.
Hmm, I mostly agree. But the voodoo was filled with issues due to the flat plane crank rattling the engine to death, meanwhile the predator is capable of holding 1200 WHP reliably from the factory. I’d switch those two, and then I’d agree 💯.
Yeah that engine creates the worst of both crossplane and flatplane into one crankshaft in order to maintain the ability to fire at odd intervals for the unique uneven headers, allowing for that grumbly flatplane sound everyone (except me) loves.
It really just had oil starvation issues in the 2015/16 years because of the oil filter coming loose from techs not paying attention to the torque specs and the 17/18s had oil consumption issues but other than that they're solid
Also the GT500 doesn't have that flat plane crank. And the GT350 got a motor revision in 2019 so it holds boosted applications and doing both boost and NA reliably
@xLightning16x there is a GT500 KR (King of the Road) version that does feature the Voodoo Flatplane but supercharged like the standard GT500 engine. It makes 900 something horsepower, I believe.
After ford dropped the cast iron block in the gt500 in 2010, I think the 2011-2012 gt500 deserves a bit of shine. They made a decent amount of power but that engine actually has stronger rods than the 13-14 Trinity engines and is a better platform for making big power. Good list!
Great video and I personally agree with most of your choices on how to rate them. However, the 2005 ford gt 5.4 is an entirely different animal then the 5.4 which was in the 07 gt500. Probably the only thing they have in common is displacement. The ford gt 5.4 was an all aluminum, dry sump, rock solid built bottom end, racecar engine. This motor came from the factory with the ability to easily withstand 1000hp. The supercharger was a lysholm twinscrew unit, superior to the eaton roots blower on the 07 gt500. This absolute unit of an engine definitely deserves to be in the top tier also.
Glad you enjoyed, and yes the GT engine is utter insanity, definitely top tier. Didn’t know that about the supercharger that’s really intriguing. Thanks for the info and welcome to the channel!
@running2redline I hate to geek out and fanboy out on that motor so much, but i remember when it debuted I ate up every magazine and info about the car I could get my hands on. I remember on the old forums reading about bone stock Ford gt's putting down 530 plus rear wheel hp bone stock. The 550hp rating was definitely under rating it or the midengine design made it have very little parasitic loss. Maybe it was a combination of those two things...? But thanks for the content!
Geeking out on these things is what brings us together, I’m just as passionate. The reduction of parasitic loss is for sure a player, crank vs wheel was probably much closer. I’m glad you enjoyed
Gen 2 is KING. No bbq tick issues like the gen 3, no cam phaser issues like the gen 3, stronger rods than the gen 1, same valve springs as the Boss 302 roadrunner for higher rpm. Its just a stronger, more powerful version of the gen 1 without the reliability issues of the gen 3. Also responds to boost just as well as a Gen 3. I disagree with the LS6/LS7 ratings. The LS7 issue was a BIG issue that cost way more money to fix than swapping valve springs, and I would venture a bet, nuked way more engines than the LS6 yellow valve spring issue (which only came on a few early LS6 engines). I've owned 5 LS engines in various trims, modded and uin-modded, and the LS6 was the gem of them all. LS7 is badass, I agree, but a C tier rating on the LS6 is criminal in my opinion! I grew up listening to big American V-8s in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s, so I understand their allure. I think this list looks very good for more recent V-8 engines. Thank you for your thoughtful comments about them.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video and appreciate the comment. I’ll be redoing this video at some point to include the older stuff as they’re too good to leave out!
I know Dodge really only has 3 current engines but there's 4 3rd gen Hemi's and there's the early and later versions that are actually quite different from one another. For the 5.7 you have the pre eagle (2003-2008) and the eagle hemi (2009-present). The pre eagle hemi makes 345hp and 375lbft where as the eagle hemi makes 370hp and 395lbft in the Challengers, Chargers and 300's but makes 395hp and 407lbft in the Ram trucks and Jeep SUV's. The eagle hemi also comes with VVT in the cars. Then we get into the 6.1 Hemi (2005-2010) it makes 425hp and 420lbft. It only came in the SRT8 Charger's, Challengers, 300's and Jeep Grand Cherokee's. Then we get into the 392 hemi (2011-present) which you covered well, but in the cars it has the codename "apache" refering to it's cylinder heads vs the 5.7's "eagle" heads. And the cars will have 392 badging. But in the heavy duty trucks from (2015-present) they're just called the 6.4 Hemi gas engine, codename BGE which is stamped in the block which literally stands for "big gas engine." They make 410hp and 429lbft but Little known secret though, the BGE blocks are damn near identical to a hellcat block and have been proven to handle up to 2000hp. Different rotating assembly than the hellcat blocks, but they make for the best builder engines because they can be had at a fraction of the price of a hellcat block. Also the hellcat engines come in like 3 different current power configurations depending on the trim level for the cars and the vehicle they're in has to do with different power levels for different years. Plus they've made special versions of the engine like the 2018 Demon and the new Demon 170.
Imagine a BGE block with a 90mm stroke and DOHC. 8000 RPM safe and 700HP N/A; Basically just a bigger C8 Z06 motor at 6.1L. The real trick would be dropping the compression a bit and running a centrifugal. Probably hit 900HP and have one HELL of a sound. Just go hit up that one vid of the black C8 with a ProCharger.
Yes sir!!! Still driving my Sonic Blue 03 Mustang GT representing the 2 valve 4.6L It deserves every bit of a spot. After owning several of these they are just reliable and super easy to fix. I can do chains, tensions and guides on a Saturday.
You should have included the hot rod ability into the equation, Junk Yard LS's from trucks are pretty good for budget builders. This includes the other makes as well
I know of a lot of people running LM7’s with the stock bottom end and making 1000 hp numbers. The ls platform is truly a step up from the old small blocks and big blocks. Still got love for them but the ls is a great platform.
The 345 Hemi should have been one tier higher. Starting in 2018 they sounded great. Also you left out the Demon engine and the Redeye engine. Both S tiers.
He shoulda reviewed non eagle and eagle head hemi 5.7’s but as for the 6.2, all dodge did was tune them up and add better parts here and there but that demon 170 motor is something completely different that I’d like to know more of
I’ve mentioned this in a few other comments, but I stuck to the highest production volume engines to keep the video a reasonable length. Thanks for watching
Nice list, mine would personally look a little different but there are so many ways to rank these. It just depends on what your needs are/what you're looking for in an engine
The LS2 was also found in the 2006-2009 Trailblazer SS. I’m not sure about putting it into a D tier the one in the Trailblazer SS was more stout there were Turbo Trailblazer SS’s running 9 second 1/4 mile times on stock engine blocks at 140+ mph.
Yah my boss has a 1000hp Trailblazer ss. It was a 10 sec car. He daily drive it lol in the 90-115 degree weather. I was surprised he didn't mention the ls2 being in the Trailblazer as well! The lq9 was great too and was chosen sometimes more than the ls2!
Nice list overall, I definitely would have added in the legendary 4.6L 4v, from the SVT Cobra/Mach1 (Cobra one modified from factory) . 2v and 3v were great reliable engines, and imo fantastic sounds, but definitely lackluster for power.
Truth. John Mihovetz has gone 5.88 @ 250mph on 4.6 4V that was entirely oem parts minus the rods/pistons/, oil pump, and gaskets. Absolutely the king for oem
@@running2redline I could definitely see you making a "Classic V8s" lisr or something along those lines, I think it could do well. I have been watching some of your C6 videos, as I'm hoping to be able to get one within the next couple years, but they just keep climbing up here in Canada lol
I’m for sure thinking I should, it’s been requested a ton. And thank you for being a returning viewer, I’m happy to hear that. If you’re thinking of a C6 for sure do it! 6.1 hemi, reliable tons of power and sounds awesome. Granite I have a $10k exhaust but I love it. I have a 1 in 500 color challenger 6.1 and wouldn’t trade it for anything
Yes I should’ve included the 6.1, probably would’ve been in A tier for me. However your particular car with that exhaust sounds really neat. What is the color?
The 330 Modular you put in the B tier is kind of underrated. The configuration they had it for the 2005/2006 Ford GT is actually very reliable and can get on the power very quickly. The base block is also bullet proof, someone actually was able to modify that motor on the base block up to almost 3000hp without sleeving or boring, and the mad lad daily drives it, which is pretty darn impressive.
Yes, did rate it only off of the GT500 version, in the ford GT it’s a completely different monster, that surely would see it higher up. I didn’t know that about the base block, but that’s wildly impressive. Thanks for watching
@@running2redlineyes and also there was a ford gt with it were they switched it to turbos and it went 310mph yes mph on a stock block and the car still had an interior and tags
I think you missed a great opportunity on the Terminator engines in the 03-04 Cobras. It was so good, the lead engineer lost his job. I’d consider it the ancestral father to every modern factory supercharged performance platform in America.
I tried to keep the vid a reasonable length, but those are two great ones for sure. If I revisit this ever I’ll be sure to include them. Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel
Well if it was only about "Sound" that made an engine top tier, this would be close. As a rebuilder for over 40 years, I give props to both the LS/LT and Coyote platforms. The bottom ends are bulletproof and can absorb high RPMs and loads of power. But if I was ranking the best all time engines, it would also include the Ford 427 FE, The Toyota 2JZ, The Chevy DZ302, The Ford 300 Six, The Chevy 3.8 Six, and older Subaru EJ20 series.
The 5.7 hemi makes more power in truck form. The intake and exhaust on the charger and challengers are smaller then the rams. In truck form it's makes 395hp and 410ftlbs.
The voodoo gt350 was an absolute pleasure to drive when I worked at Carmax. It needed a lot of miles on it to pass inspection so I got to actually drive it a decent amount.
The 5.7 Hemi can take a lot before failure and I think it's a good engine but as someone that has a 6.2 that makes around 850 horsepower with very little effort I think it's obvious which one I'd rather have.
I’m currently building a 5.7 for na street use and find that with there wild headflow they should respond very well to any sort of cam upgrade as the cam can’t keep up with the cylinder heads at 5900+ rpm
I think I'm the only one that doesn't care for the demon supercharger whine, sounds like a cat in a blender. No thanks I'll take N/A or big cam over that noise even if it's lower hp
Being a MOPAR guy, the 5.7L Hemi and the 6.1L (the 1st generation of the Gen IIIs?) were left off the list. Stock these are over looked, BUT with the swap of the "Eagle" heads of the new 5.7 Hemis, they light up. If you are hotrodding an older car with a modern MOPAR engine, this is the way to go. (Unless you go Hellcat ...) I would rank the original base 5.7l over the new base 5.7l for pure mod-ability sake, even if it makes less power in stock form. (340, 345 and 350)
I prefer the new 5.7 over the 6.4 honestly. It’s fairly fast, WAY cheaper, and IMO sounds way way better than the 6.4. I’ve owned both and I can say for the price I’m much more pleased with the 5.7 and that exhaust note is better than I could get with the 6.4.
I’ll add that I had an SRT grand Cherokee and then an RT Durango. The SRT was definitely faster when timed 0-60 but it just didn’t feel near as sporty as the RT Durango does
6.1L HEMI was left out. Solid B (IMO) due to its power and the amount of vehicles it went into. It’s still used today over the 5.7L because of its larger bore, 4.055”, and ease of aftermarket parts/interchangeability
I personally don’t think the base hemi should be above the ls2. The base hemi is notorious for getting “death ticks”, and usually means you have to replace the whole engine, or completely rebuild it. Meanwhile the ls2’s have been known to live up to 150-160k miles. I know this because I myself own a 112k mile ls2 that runs like a dream.
"Notorious". It's not nearly as common of an issue as it's made out to be, especially given the misinformation and confusion that comes from the typical ticks a Hemi can get from the injectors that are just part of normal operation. While if a lifter tick does become present, it is a massive concern, it's not even close to as common as the public has been lead to believe. I am a former FCA tech, and have owned both a 5.7 and now a 6.4 with absolutely no problems out of either car.
My 392 chewed the cam at 112,000(ductile steel) cured it with stage 2 Comp cam (billet) with Hellcat lifters so no more MDS. Great sound from the Magnaflow exhaust. A catch can and that's it. Tuner did a bang up job and reprogrammed transmission. Whole different animal now. So I don't agree with catastrophic failure unless you push it on until you destroy it. This car will check your skill as the diff comes with a pretty tall gear. Love all badass engines. Really want a 572 stroker old school Hemi though. $$$ Love a bullet from Ray Barton $$$
@@srt8rocketship241 yeah MDS is definitely not ideal for it. Nor is long idle times constantly. That seems to be where the issue surfaces most. Fortunately you found multiple routes to fixing and avoiding that problem again in the future.
Personally I think the vodoo is the most over rated engine as far as exhaust note. I think they sound like shit. Super high pitch and tin canny sounding. Ford’s best sounding engine is the 03-04 cobra 4.6 with a set of headers lol.
Had an LS6 i put into an 87 iroc camaro. Was an absolute blast and fun engine. I currently have the LT1 in my 22 camaro and love it too. It is exactly as you say.. reliable and does what it needs to. After the warranty falls off i may be more interested in modding it out and upping the power but overall i love the engine.
@running2redline always loved camaros and always will. Got the metallic orange color with a drop top. I went for something for the last camaro that would be quick when needed, but emphasis on pure fun.
I have a gen 1 coyote in my 2013 f150, and its been treating me great so far, pretty quick, runs like a clock and has very little engine noise and is very smooth, IDK if you have one but you should do a video of their old school engines, engines with carbs and distributors on them
I’m definitely a huge ford fan and seeing that you’re a Chevy guy and giving quite a bit of praise to Fords engines, I certainly have mad respect for you and your video. Great video man 🤙🤙🇺🇸🇺🇸
I feel like the ls3 and ls7 should be on the same tier. While the ls7 is legendary for being a modern big block, the ls3 has amazing reliability in comparison and is actually practical in daily life.
A few things to note / common questions:
- These are solely my opinions and if yours are different that’s fine. This video is purely for entertainment.
- I did not forget any engines (LSA, LS4, Super snake) etc. I simply stuck to the newer and highest production volume engines to keep the video a reasonable length. I might do a video on older ones eventually.
Thanks for watching and have a great day!
i think it’s a fine list… debating the results is half the fun. you need a little controversy to keep it lively!
Plz do would love to see the placement of the small blocks like maybe the 460 stroker or Windsor or whatever people want to call it at the time
I was a little disappointed to see nothing from the golden age of muscle cars, but I get it.
On any final list chart you should also show the specs underneath the engine model.
Make for a handy and quick comparison overview of engine specs.

The entire LS engine series shares the harmonic balancer problem. The LS6 valve spring failure was actually quite rare and those engines were often thrashed at the track.
Couldn’t have said it better myself
The ls2 is huge in australia and almost bullet proof. The l98 L77 variants with DOD or active fuel management had lifter failures but cam and lifter package fixed that pretty easily

14 GT500 owner here, can only confirm everything you said about the trinity engine. It's really something special glad to see it getting the respect it deserves
Glad you enjoyed, and love your car that’s sick. Welcome to the channel!

Can confirm. My 6.1 is boosted with 8lbs, and is running on e85 currently making 600 wheel. Stock internals and runs door to door with Hellcats.
Im confused… it’s well known that the 6.4 stock internals can’t handle boost, so I don’t understand how it can be the bar for fantastic internals?

Agreed, gen 2 coyote has no place in B tier. Definitely A or S

@ryanlemmers5300 Man those are hard to find! Every f150 I search is the eco boost engine!

The 90s ZR1 carried the LT5, not LT4. The LT4 was a single year engine in 1996 found in the 96 Grand Sport and was an option for other models.
Yes I meant LT5 but had a brain malfunction, I think I was thinking C4 and let the 4 carry over lol. You are correct, thanks for watching

Identified with the block painted red, correct? I knew a guy that had one, he loved stumping people with that little factoid.

Missing the terminator 4.6 which was bulletproof and should be S tier.
Yes I tried to stick to newer stuff to keep the length down, but I completely agree that engine is legendary. Thanks for watching!
The Terminator is newer than the LS1. 🤷
Yeah not sure how LS1 and LS2, but no Terminator? Just the sound it makes alone.
Terminator owner here, my car is old yes but with headers and a good exhaust, it makes one of the meanest V8 notes I have ever heard. That’s before you factor in the screamin eaton, or the whipple whines of these cars
People always talk about the iconic sound of the hellcat engine but seem to forget that terminators were doing it years ago.
just wanted to mention a difference between the VooDoo and the Predator. Voodoo has a flat-plane crank, which gives it that beautiful sound you talked about, where as the Predator went back to the original cross-plane crank like the 5.0s have, which is why it goes back to that gumbly V8. great video! just the one thing i would have mentioned for those 2 engines!
Yes that is correct thanks for the info. I’m glad you enjoyed and welcome you to the channel!
yeah so is the predator a voodoo just with a supercharger and a cross plane or is it a coyote gone up to 5.2L and a supercharger like which way is it. also i know the voodoo is based on the coyote but hope you understand what i mean
The flat-planes are also why the voodoo has the potential to be the fastest ford V8 at the moment.

This is based af. I agree almost completely, i think for the time the LS3 deserves S tier but to each his own
I think LS3 is S-tier and LS7 is A.
@browningbelgium2326 ehhh I have a c5z as well but let's be honest it was just a little better version of the LS1.
Mopar or Nocar?
The reliability is pretty bad. Dodge themselves said the engine repeatedly blew up when using E85.
This is all pretty modern, we need a retro/classic v8 tier list (454,427,429,440,etc)

My 97 cobra has a 4.6 4v as well.

Sounds great, as long as you enjoy it that’s what matters. Good luck with the build!
The 5.7 is a sleeper because it is in fact asleep.

Honorable mention to the Ford 7.3 diesel. Maximum reliability because it didn't make enough power to hurt itself and avoided emissions control. I also just love an old diesel knock/clatter. Turbo, tune, and pipes gives you a nice whistle, too.
He didn’t go over trucks, let alone diesels
The 7.3 mammoth is a petroleum engine
I must be getting old. I don’t see how you can have an “ultimate” list that only covers engines made during the last 20 years or so.
I wanted to keep the video length down, if I did every V8 ever made it would be a multi hour video. I plan on breaking things up more into a series, and since older engines seems so highly requested I’ll likely make that happen. Hope you still enjoyed and welcome to the channel!

I would move the LT1 to the A tier but other than that I can agree with this list
I agree I would move the LT1 up to A .. it’s a great engine and I love it in my grand sport
Glad to hear that! Yes I went ATI lol. The previous owner made the brilliant decision to go OEM a second time, which I think is why it happened again.
All the ls style engines have balancer issues. I had a 6.0 gas 2500 that went bad and currently have a c5z in the shop getting an ati.
@@running2redlinebut the Ls3 and Ls1 have the same balancer issue, i had to replace my c5 ls1’s balancer at 96k miles
Hmm, I mostly agree. But the voodoo was filled with issues due to the flat plane crank rattling the engine to death, meanwhile the predator is capable of holding 1200 WHP reliably from the factory. I’d switch those two, and then I’d agree 💯.
I agree with you. My thoughts exactly

Cool video though, especially if it brings comments like this ;-)
I can respect that for sure all your points are very valid. I will admit I was harsh on the LS6 due to a poor personal experience. I’m glad you enjoyed yours so much and liked the video! Welcome to the channel, happy to have you here
Ls2 was in the 05-06 Pontiac GTO as well, LS6 didn’t really have a long life either but got put in the first Gen CTS-V’s which is nice
Can't forget the hellephant too

I know of a lot of people running LM7’s with the stock bottom end and making 1000 hp numbers. The ls platform is truly a step up from the old small blocks and big blocks. Still got love for them but the ls is a great platform.
The 345 Hemi should have been one tier higher. Starting in 2018 they sounded great. Also you left out the Demon engine and the Redeye engine. Both S tiers.
Demon and redeye engines are both still the high output hemi 6.2.
He shoulda reviewed non eagle and eagle head hemi 5.7’s but as for the 6.2, all dodge did was tune them up and add better parts here and there but that demon 170 motor is something completely different that I’d like to know more of

The 330 Modular you put in the B tier is kind of underrated. The configuration they had it for the 2005/2006 Ford GT is actually very reliable and can get on the power very quickly.
(Unless you go Hellcat ...)
I would rank the original base 5.7l over the new base 5.7l for pure mod-ability sake, even if it makes less power in stock form. (340, 345 and 350)
Yeah, definitely more of a chevy guy but the 5.7 seems to be overlooked a lot, its a fantastic engine
The SRT was definitely faster when timed 0-60 but it just didn’t feel near as sporty as the RT Durango does
Also forgetting the 4.7l, 318, 360, 440, and the God father 426
6.1L HEMI was left out. Solid B (IMO) due to its power and the amount of vehicles it went into. It’s still used today over the 5.7L because of its larger bore, 4.055”, and ease of aftermarket parts/interchangeability
Yes my mistake. I’d say A or B as well very respectable engine. Hope you enjoyed!

Good list but I feel like the 6.1 hemi and the 2v 4.6 we're missing
Yeah I probably should’ve included both, I’d put 4.6 S tier and 6.1 A tier. Thanks for watching!
I hope my LS2 lasts that long as well. It has 36k miles and it’s on its 3rd harmonic balancer. Thanks for watching
