i just bought a ‘86 mercedes 560SL which was recently imported from the US. although arguably most people here drive a EU spec car, i really like the US specs much more, such an 80’s vibe. i can’t wait to clean, preserve and enjoy it! all the best from Holland 🇳🇱

That is a beauty of an iconic Mercedes! Those cars, the R107 were in production from 1971-1989… but still seem like 80’s cars. The numbers on Mercedes models used to have to do with displacement so 450 is probably 4.5 liters(ish). You did a fantastic job, and I hope you find the key! What a treat to wake up and watch this on a stormy Saturday morning!

I have a 1982 Mercedes 380SL in excellent condition that looks to be in a similar color called Ivory - same interior - dual timing chain aluminum V8 - but with a dark brown convertible top - plus the removable hardtop. The owner's manual suggests you visit your local Mercedes dealer to have the hefty top removed in the spring and put back on in the fall - of course they will store it for you for a "small" fee. The thing is built like a panzer - not fast, but very smooth on the highway. I tell folks to just open and shut the doors - they close with a thud unlike what you hear with todays cars. The heavy chrome and other trim pieces still shine like new.

Is the number code correct? If so what do you think about the rest of the line, I have an e class (executive) 300, but the literage is 4.1 v6, what is the relevance of the 300, I normally assume it has to do with trim as you go down in number you lose features

@@DG_427 We know that mr. obvious, but the official english translation by mercedes is indeed sport-light. Posting the original german phrase doesn't make any sense here to help people understand the names.

    • @nordvestgaming1238
      @nordvestgaming1238 8 місяців тому +4

@@jujub5557 As time has gone on Mercedes has become less and less strict about making sure the number actually aligns with the vehicles literage, however up until the early 2000's the numbers did correlate directly to the engines literage on every single model variant, with the exception of the W201 generation where they just went with some variation of the name 190(E, D, LE) and typically just added the correct literage as an additional number at the end of the name on models that didn't use the base spec 1.8L engine, eg 190E 2.3, 190D 2.5, 190E 3.2 AMG etc. Except Austrailia did get a W201 180E with the 1.8L engine so there is at least one car in the W201 generation that's name does correctly line up with its engine literage without an extra number at the end of the name.

Even with the airbags down, the Lincoln has a lot of potential. The first thing to be done is to get in the trunk to check out the air bags pump. Like the tires, perhaps the bags would hold air long enough to get it out of the garage. Fix or replace the pump. Whoever the owner of those luxury vehicles really shouldn’t be intimidated by the work needed. Good luck with those cars.

It's mechanical fuel injection. CIS. The thing your pushing down is called the barn door. Let's air in and that door when pushed down in connected to a lever that Let's fuel in. That round thing behind it, is the fuel distributor. The lever works with lever and connects to a piston in the fuel distributor. All those lines coming out the fuel distributor go directly to fuel injectors. Cool design but a pain to work on and get right as they work in conjunction with a bunch of other parts of the full system. I know as I have the same fuel system in my Porsche 928 Euro. Sadly been sitting over 10 years since I blew the seals out of my transmission. Sweet detail guys!

Check everywhere for one of those metal magnetic hide-a-key gadgets that were very popular when this car was built. I found an old Mercedes sedan no keys and sure enough there was a hide-a-key in the transmission support. OEM Mercedes key copy can be obtained through the Mercedes Classic Center. They will mail it to your local dealer. Just need to prove ownership. Guaranteed to work unless the ignition lock cylinder has been replaced. 450 engine pretty bulletproof. Just thirsty with that 3-speed and rear axle. I've heard that installing a 280 SEL 4.5 sedan axle improves top speed and gas mileage.

As a Mercedes specialist, I don't study other brands so here is a quick 101 on the Mercedes models or nomenclature as you mentioned.
Mercedes models used to indicate the engine capacity first and then the different body shape numbers.
Each bodyshape has a chassis code - for example the SL (Sport Leight = light sports) you were detailing is a R107 chassis and the shape after that is the R129.
    The R107's models were available in 280SL, 300SL, 350SL, 380SL, 500SL and the flagship 560SL.
Around 1994 Mercedes swapped the numbers around for ease of grouping models together, thus the 500SL became the SL500.
Another big change came around production cost savings and Mercedes models no longer indicate the actual engine size - more that their models perform like an average engine of a certain size would perform.
A 2.0L with a turbo or supercharger would be dubbed a 230 to indicate more power than a standard 2.0L.
This way costs are kept at bay by using the same engine and just adding a cheaper asthma pump.
The latest C63 for example, is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged 4 cylinder combined with an electric motor - which produces more power than the 4.0L twin turbo'd jack hammer sounding V8s....

Beautiful job, Guys. That is a beautiful car in really rather nice shape. Glad the MBTex upholstery came up so well. Those 14 inch wheels really are magnesium, which is why they do not corrode or deteriorate badly. A lot of people upgrade to later 15 inch wheels because the options for 14 inch tires is depressingly small. The old Radial T/A is about as good as it gets. Get into a 15 inch wheel, and the Michelin Defender 94H is a terrific tire for these cars.
With that Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, when it works, it works well and is very reliable. The key is finding someone who understands the system.
The good news is that mechanical parts are easy to come by. Ehen working on an old Mercedes, always check the dealer for price and availability first. Often times the dealer is both the easiest and least expensive source for parts.

great Videos! When you got your next older Mercedes please pull out the Headrests. They are adjustable to the Height of the Driver. They should catch your Head in case of Accident. When the Headrests are complete down you can break your Neck. Imagine some crashes in to your car from behind. 450, 350, 280..... x 10 is always the Engine Capacity in Cubic Centimeter.

Doing a great job with these crazy barn finds .
Have you ever used Dow Bathroom cleaner to clean the covertable tops. I have in the past and swear by it it is made to remove mold and it's also very mild so it's not going to discolor it.

It's too bad that area of town was kind of questionable. The building looked like it had the potential of being turned into a really cool little shop. Great job on the Benz guys. Can't wait until you get a lift so we can watch you guys clean the underside of the cars.

I always use the Armor All products for cleaning my car. They've never failed me in the past, nor have they let me down in the present, whenever I detail my car after a good washing. But for tire cleaning/shine results. I switch it up with either Black Magic tire shine or Armor All tire foam protectant. The only thing I really need to learn is Buffing my car, but I don't have a good buffing kit, yet.

When you asked for favorite glass cleaner, I have two -- from commercial sources, Windex with Ammonia or a homemade mix of 50% White Vinegar and 50% Hot Water.
