I always chuckle when I hear my fellow Americans talk about historic buildings, usually a bit over 100 years old, and then see houses in UK, France, Italy, even Belgium, that are 500, 600, 700 years old and still inhabited ! Your videos are fabulous ! Thanks for sharing.

When we were new imigrants to Oz I think it was Sydney that was celebrating 200 years. I had a letter from my Mum in UK and the Stamp on the envelope was celebrating York 2000 years. It made me laugh.

Hehe yeah I live in a 15th century Grade II listed possibly older timber framed cottage , and I always think the same when I hear people talking about Victorian houses and how old they are! Same with grave stones !

@garethmathew69Indeed there are, but there are very few existing buildings from the Seventeenth century in America, to be honest. I live in a house from 1590, for example. It's a house, tourists take photos, I only notice the age when I bang my head on door frames, or the oli slides to one side of the frying pan. Lol, Yes! America is the best! But maybe your annoyance that other countries have "lovelier things" or something else you don't have... comes from your British roots and sense of universal domination, superiority and entitlement??? ❤

Thanks for the memories! Got taken there and stayed at the Mermaid 🧜‍♀️ for my 50th. Our room was on the top floor. On the way up there the first time up many higgledee piggledee stairs; I stopped to catch my breath. I looked to my left as something caught my eye. It was a life size portrait of Queen Elizabeth the 1st looking right back at me. I wasn’t entirely sure it was just a painting for a few seconds; nearly fainted! 😆 Rye is just beautiful!

When I was a young boy our family visited Rye in 1968 and I remember visiting the Mermaid Inn. Once we return back to California, in school I had written a report about my trip to England and especially about Rye. In 1989 my wife and I visited Rye. I do remember walking up those steep and narrow steps at St Mary’s and being rewarded with the panoramic view that summers day. I also enjoyed seeing that reconstructed model village of Rye from the 1830s there at the visitor center. I really enjoyed this video you made of Rye especially the background sound of the town when you were filming. Now I can’t wait till our next trip back to Rye and the surrounding area

Hi guys. From Australia. This was my first viewing of your channel & how appropriate it was...my Moon family started off in Rye, so I got to see what this beautiful little village looked like. Edmund Moon was born in 1780 to William Moon & Mary (nee Gascoin). During my research I remembered reading about how the ocean receded away from Rye... The family moved to Rolvenden, Kent. There son Thomas Moon & Amy (nee Lawrence) then immigrated to Australia in 1839, like so many other families, to get away from the Typhus outbreak. If you guys are ever or will be up around Rolvenden, Kent; I would love to see what it looks like & hear about it's history. I really like your presentation of Rye & look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you. Cheers Carol

Another great tour! Look forward to the 'spotlight' video. My friend visited Rye a number of years ago, and enjoyed it very much. For those old enough to remember, Patrick McGoohan played Dr. Syn, the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh in the 1963 Disney movie. It was based on Russell Thorndike's (1915 and subsequent) stories about smugglers in and around Rye. I always love to see half-timbered buildings in such great condition. I laughed when you said the Inn was not 'original', but had been reconstructed in 1620, 'after the fire'. Here in California we only have 'Mock-Tudor' houses, built in the 1920s. :)

Hi Nancy, the town is very popular, we were there on a Tuesday so quieter. Did that so you see more of the buildings without lots of people around. The weekends especially in summer will be busy with visitors. We timed the walk up the tower to be on top for 12 noon just didn’t want to be in the bell tower for the rings so we could hear for the rest of the day haha. It was delightful.

Rye is one of the most touristy places in East Sussex, where I lived for decades. Believe me, you are seeing it very quiet. I have spent Christmas and New Year's there, and it was packed with tourists. It's just that the Town Council have done an excellent job over the years in not allowing tacky commercialisation, and preserving the architecture.

Lovely to see, thank you! We'd never been to Rye before, & when we came home to England before the Pandemic, it was on our itinerary and we spent 3-nights there - went to Camber Sands, Dungeness, The Steam Railway, AMAZING Great Dixter, along with just about all the walks you showed - fortunately no sewer works at the time - there was a flower festival in St Mary's which was lovely. We actually ate at the Ypres Tower pub (we were staying under the cliff) as well as the Old Bell - really a delightful old town, I'd say you could spend a week there with plenty to explore in the town as well as 1-hr+ or so radius. Another lovely production. Can I suggest Mersea Island in Essex, as a rather unusual destination? Safe travels & thanks for sharing your talents.

There are some excellent art shops in Rye too, including the Rye Art Gallery (local artists) on High Street. There are also some pretty good eateries in the town including the Mermaid where the Ploughman's is to die for, and Layla Turkish on the High Street.

Pontins holiday park are words I was never expecting to hear on this channel! Seriously, I think Rye would be very near the top of my list of British places to visit from your videos. It really has it all, doesn’t it? And the sounds… this was just so welcome, it’s oppressively hot here, today, and I‘m landlocked (always tough for a Welsh girl).
Now, will I brave the ghosts, rather than the holiday park..?

    • @MemorySeekers

I would give the ghosts a go 😂 Yes it really does have all the elements of an amazing town and the coast to enjoy as well. And so close to London by train very accessible!

Great job Simon, more than worthy of a BBC travelogue...
I'm from East London, but I've lived in California since 1976, having spent 40 years working in HOLLYWOOD. Your quality of videography and presentation is first class.
I love the Romney Marsh area... the Dymchurch Railway and the old Golden Sands holiday camp at St. Mary's Bay -Happy Days indeed, and all before these dark days of Covidism!
When I left Britain the steadicam in cinematography was just getting started, your moving shots are stunning, at some time I expect you'll be adding drone shots to your videos and then you'll really be outstanding. You've already got good editing skills and a few drone shots would really enhance your productions... just a thought!

Hello Graham, thank you for the lovely comment. We do our best to bring a good quality production. We don’t have a drone right now but some times take a royalty free set of drone footage if we think it will enhance the video. I am on the fence with having one… more and more places in the U.K. have restrictions and to be honest when we are walking around and hear the buzz of a drone it’s kind of annoying. I also like for people to see what you can actually see when walking around. They have there place and used sparingly can have a wonderful impact. One to ponder for sure. Thanks so much for watching 😊
