    Thanks for this wonderful video! The chemist (that was) in Northstreet was my late grandfather's who bought it after HG Well's worked there & it was then named 'C G Mitten' after my grandfather, Charles Mitten. Later my late uncle, Robert took over the family business & the name remained. Sadly the original frontage of the chemist is no longer, but I can still remember it, as it had the same charm as many of the other shop fronts. I will be sending a link of this brilliant video to my aunt (Charles' daughter) who now lives in California as I'm sure she would love to see this. Thanks again!

      Hello Jules, so nice to read your comment and the history and attachment to Midhurst. Fascinating thank you! You mentioned North St, but we have on Church Hill ? I know we didn't get a very good shot of it sadly as we never knew until after our walk around. Did not spot the plaque. If you have a look on google street view (you may have already) you can get a very good shot of the shop that is now a Dentist. Hope your Aunt enjoys it. Best regards.

    Haya. This was great. I adore all the very old buildings & it sets my imagination off thinking how it would of once been, very different sights, sounds & even smells, seeing all the modern cars & technology that would of never existed, I always think I wonder what they would think if they could time travel to the current time, as we can time travel by way of enjoying what still stands & of course thru books, paintings & old photos ect. . . History & living history is just amazing. The Crafty pint, amused me, did you both treat yourself to a little something from there? Thanku so much for sharing.

    Living in Southern California, where we have only a few old Spanish garrison or church buildings that date back that far, seeing so many well preserved buildings dating from the 1500s makes my heart glad. I love how you include the full history of each building; the fact than most served at least three functions since being built drives home the impermanence of human life. I'm curious if the 'fish scale' patterns on the upper portions of several buildings are specially made brick, or wood painted to look like brick. I could wander around that town for hours. Thank you for sharing a taste of it with your far away fans.

      @@MemorySeekers Thanks for your reply! The buildings at 1.39 (Town Council), and 5.39 (St. Anne's Hall?) have decorative rows of shingles or bricks with curved edges near the top. The reddish color is wonderful, but maybe the shingles are painted or stained to match the brick? The half-timbering, herring-bone brickwork, fancy thatch patterns, etc. are so exciting to see. The oldest building in my neighborhood is a farmhouse built in 1895.

      I hope you find the confidence to go. The nice thing about Midhurst is the open space around the ruins so that you can keep your distance from others and still enjoy yourself. Another option is to arrive early when it is quieter in the town, and then walk the ruins.

    In the town house (pictured 5.54) there used to live a lovely little old Welsh lady, who was once a nanny to Minnie Driver, the actress. What was also very unusual is that she had a well in her front room. I kid you not... it was a proper water well with a stone surround but she had a large sheet of glass over it as she didn't use it as a source of water. She had some lights around the top on the inside of the well so you can see the water down below.

    • @MemorySeekers
      @MemorySeekers  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for sharing that, most interesting! I wonder how and why the house was built around it?

    • @chrissavill8713
      @chrissavill8713 Рік тому

      @@MemorySeekers I think it was one grand town house back then.... It has now been converted into flats which is why it is in her front room now. It was probably the kitchen years ago and for some reason has stayed as a well throughout the years without it being capped off.

      @@MemorySeekers It surprised me!... that's for sure. I work for the Town Council as their only goundsman, etc, etc. and used to see her often as I walked by everyday, litter picking, on my way to to St Ann's hill. She was often cleaning out front and polishing the brass, and that is how I got chatting with her. One day she asked me inside to show me something, so I said ok, as long as she behaved and kept her hands to herself,... lol (she was in her 80's by then but had a wicked sense of humour), and that is when she showed me the "well".
      She used to give me a £5.00 every Christmas as walked by,.. for a Christmas drink. Unfortunately, she is no longer with us, which is a shame as I miss our chats. She was great lady who lived a colourful life and that building will hold that memory in me, til I no longer can.
