It looks like a lot of people are forgetting that Gallagher does more than just smash things. This is how he ends his shows. His standup is amazing. He points out the stupidity of the world around him. Just like the majority of the good comics. He also does props. He also does performance art pieces. Like that giant couch behind him and the smashing bit. He is so great because he does so many things.

There was a line of people waiting to buy, but I couldn't afford any, so I just stood away from them and looked. He seriously shouted at me -- "What do you think you are doing?" I told him I was just looking. He jumped up and ran around the table to me. I was new to him and his comedy and so I thought he was going to hit me or throw me out of the theater. But instead, with a magic marker, he signed the shirt I was wearing. It was a great show and he was a fantastic comedian. I am so sorry he's gone.

I think it broke expectations for theater in a way. If you think about what theater was usually like back then...you had to get dressed up, be all quiet and well behaved within polite society, and this kind of flipped that on its head. Everyone’s looking for something entertaining, and this was innovative and pretty funny.
