I'm almost 50, and I watched D&D religiously, but this is the only episode that stuck with me. Even after all these years. I'm glad to have found it posted.
Agreed . 19:00 Venger was getting weak.
Me too! I was so intrigued with all the other magic weapons and what characters they'd be used by.
Same here. Both in age and in this episode sticking with me.
agreed. this an the thundercats Excalibur episode.
im 40 and I remember all theese shows
Of course everyone here noticed the kids in the recent D&D movie. That was a Gem!
I loved that part
Best part of the movie, sad they still trying to get home
"May I go now?" damn dude...
That really changes the tone entirely for the series, then again the whole scene does.
One of the few kids shows that actually had the balls to have the heroes nearly kill the villain
If you like that, then watch Skeleton Warriors. The heroes in that show actually did kill the villain in the final episode.
Yeah and that's what killed this show and the ratings bcuz parents thought it was too violent. We never got thar last episode bcuz of this episode and people thought this cartoon promoted witchcraft anyway. The same as He-Man but nobody was taking Skeletor goofy as serious and that's my favorite villian of all time if you can tell obviously
@@keldorthebluemack Well technically we got the last episode now, since you can find Requiem here on youtube. So, not only had the balls to almost kill the villain but also have an actual ending as of the 2020s.
@@mungdaal9643 Skeleton Warriors had a different vibe to it. It was a decade later in the nineties for one thing, and the heroes were fully grown adults. And Baron Dark REALLY deserved it.
Nah
Thats when you knew this was a just a shitshow. A real good one would have the heroes kill the villain
What I find amazing about this is that in all likelihood, everyone commenting here is probably in their late 30s or their 40s and talking about how much we love a cartoon about D&D. This cartoon takes me back. It was an escape from a really shitty few years and I love it so much for being there when I needed it most.
I'm in my 40's and I Love It!
i'm in my 20s and this cartoon still aired on TV back in the 90s - early 2000s in at least 2 different TV channels in my country, its one of those old cartoons that never lost its appeal to newer and older audiences alike.
This is one cartoon will always be my favorite.
Haha I'm 16 dude, love this show 😂
What a beautiful comment bro. I completly agree.. thank you for that comment
Arguably every fan's favorite episode. Everyone lost their bravado and became real, especially Hank showing true anger for once. All these decades later and people are STILL talking about it; what a legacy to the creators of this show!
Tiamat episodes were always the best ones
With the hindsight we have today of what separates a mature animated show from a children's cartoon, this episode can definitely be highlighted as a trailblazer. The most conspicuous evidence is that they set aside moments (3:34 for example) where the decision was specifically made to play _no music,_ so that it wouldn't get in the way of the importance of the scene. This isn't just rare. It's unprecedented. At least in American cartoons. Whoever wrote and directed this episode had a firm goal in mind of making something important.
Episode 3 was always my favorite (The hall of bones), but this one runs a close 2nd.
Hank isn't messing around anymore. Though I have to say, this is like the 5th time they have had a way home and I think at least two of them failed because Bobby would not leave Uni behind.
This and The Dungeon at the Heart of Dawn are my two most favourite episodes.
I remember watching this one back in the 80s, but don't recall ever seeng The Dungeon at the Heart of Dawn until I bought the series on dvd back in the 2000s.
My favorite episode, and I still remember how Tiomat dragon instigated the fight, then sat back to watch like it was a Jerry Springer episode.
she is a Goddess it amused her
LMAO. That was a HI-larious analogy. Consider how much she hated 😡 Venger, you thought she would have been more invested & would have jumped in to help out --- even if it was to serve her own selfish purposes. But she just sat back with her 🍿🍫🍷, OBSERVED 👀, & watched the 💩 show 📺 fly!!
@@booginas Why did she hate Venger so much? I know that was the only thing Venger feared in that realm besides Dungeon Master but he knew Dungeon Master wouldn't hurt him
@@hennessyapplejuice8331 venger killed all adult of dragons somehow.
@@MultiLimpet Oh is that why Tiamat hated him? That must've made him more powerful somehow
The most violent of the episodes, the kids are in for Venger's head. A dark but great episode.
Agreed. Even the backgrounds are almost all completely dark.
Requiem? Nah, that was a fairly timid script. Dragons graveyard though... this episode was already heavily toned down. According to the writers, the kids were supposed to be battered and bruised after the fight with venger, but yeah.. cant have kids getting hurt in a cartoon. parental groups lost their minds when it was found out, so a lot of backstory and effects were censored.
Can you blame them. Every chance the gang had of going back home, Venger gets in the way. They had enough, same shit with Samurai Jack and Aku
@@papahudz69 Venger just wanted their weapons i think he would've sent them home himself. At first i think he was lying but after awhile he got tired of chasing them so he was serious he would've sent them home for exchange for the weapons
@@hennessyapplejuice8331 I think that could be the case because although I think Venger could take them by force if he went really serious on them (c'mon, the dude can x1 with Tiamat), but then Dungeon Master would intervene. Maybe the only way he could get away with it would be if the boys gave the weapons by free will OR if Venger managed to take them without really hurting them.
But in this episode, once THE BOYS were the ones who started a fight to the death, Venger had the right of defend himself (he could then kill them too) and saw the opportunity to take the weapons by the easy way. Thing is, he underestimated them, also the weapons were buffed. And maybe, just maybe, Tiamat would have jumped in if they were about to die.
I love that final pan shot on Tiamat. Observing what happened. Pondering. That shot still gets me 40+ years later.
*roar*
"I didn't hear that."
*louder roar*
"I didn't hear that either."
Love Eric!!!
😆
I loved this episode, it was so real. The frustration, anger and angst was so authentic. Enough is enough, ……they acted the way anyone would if they were trapped. The tears and sadness was so ......dang. This show was ahead of its time.
IKR? This episode was almost shelved because of how dark it was.
Yes, I'm genuinely surprised how well this episode held up. It was always my favourite episode as a kid but I wasn't expecting the emotions to still be so real. Also the action was nonstop and the story telling was solid.
My absolute favorite episode HANDS DOWN. Never before had a children's cartoon had so much drama! An intense morality play.
the rest of the series was HORRIBLE really, had really awful messages like ' follow the group' was very north korea style storytelling, the same theme over and over, this gets singled out as 'controversial ' but it is probably the only time they ever agreed with the single voice that stood for individualism.
zbobob zblaaa the first 2 seasons were standalone, standard cartoon episodes. The third season had a lot of character growth though; Dungeon at the Heart of Dawn, Child of the Stargazer, and a few others. Typically the show was cancelled, just like many others around that time, RIGHT before the season finale would be made.
This was an absolutely stand out episode in the D&D canon. I love how brave the writers were when they wrote this very adult dark story. Us Kids of the 80’s were so privileged to grow up watching this amazing animated show! Now in my 40’s I still love watching this now just as much as I did then! After the Brazilian Tv ad were really could do with a movie and Netflix update to bring this to newer generations!
Brazil but I would have loved to see an Spanish version of that ad!
As a kid, this was my favorite episode. As an adult, it's STILL my favorite episode. This was a good, impressive show. Thanks for posting it and subsequent information about it.
umbrella0326 loved it as a kid, I'm 45 now, like 5th, 6th grade then
I liked all the magic weapons in the Dragon’s Graveyard.
Jeff Curtis same here. Would love to be able to go back in time and relive those days
Yep word for word. Dead on
The Official Iceman @You and me both,I still play D&D when I can.
I'll be 53 in November and I remember watching this. I have the entire series of thundercats and silver hawks. I also need to find a fairly cheap but a good portable DVD player. I have well over three hundred DVDs. Marvel comics, westerns, wrestling matches, science fiction movies and many others
I read this episode almost didn't make it to TV as it deal with issues considered too adult for children. I'm glad it did though, as I remember this episode more clearly than any of the others when I was a child.
The Ice Giant falling off the cliff to his death must have really upset the censors .
@@marlawhite1430f them. More kid will say, awesome.
The best episode of my favorite cartoon from the 80's! Tiamat just sitting on the sideline taking it all in...lol
Tiamat: don't care
Watching this as a kid, I was thinking:" If you're in the dragon's graveyard and there's all of these weapons of power just laying around on the ground from fallen heroes before you, I'd take as many of those weapons as I could with me. Instead of one weapon of power, I'd be carrying like at least three on them on me at all times. LOL."
Dude you might get cursed.
@@user-jv7gr1jb3r You know, I never thought about that. Thanks. Maybe the kids were right in just leaving the other fallen heroes' weapons alone.
Spoken like a true gamer.
I think those weapons can only be held by their original owners kind of the weapons the kids themselves have. Dungeon Master gave specific weapons to each of them. Just an idea.
Any other D&D party would've looted the Dragon's Graveyard.
This episode is just one of the main reasons why I didn't want to miss one, single, solitary episode when this cartoon show was playing on Saturday mornings. It's EXTREMELY hard to get better than this for kids cartoon shows- EXCELLENT SHOW!!
yeah this is like Breaking Bad for kids.....the writing and direction in these latter episodes.....its that good
They were fantastic!!
When you want to go home so bad you shift alignments
Letting Venger live is the evil choice.
@@MultiLimpet
Nah.
@@MultiLimpet wasn't freeing Venger from evil the reason they were in that realm? So if they killed him they might be stuck there forever.
3:38 I love this scene. They were just a footstep away from home and there is that frustration again, the exhaustion that makes you feel like crying. The moment when Hank is determined to go finish Venger is cathartic.
One of the best single episodes of any cartoon/anime ever made.

Arguably the best cartoon of the 80's. I can still remember most of the lines too.
As much as Eric ranted and acted like a chicken throughout this series, this is perhaps the one episode where he realized he'd better be careful about what he says. Furthermore, he actually showed concern about the path Hank was taking, and Hank came to realize where he was heading when he saw Bobby was taking the same path.
I found it interesting that Diana, the other leading member of the group, barely expressed any opinion about the plan. Then again, there's a lot they have to fit into 20 minutes.
Anger can blind a person.
Kenneth Demuchest But the anger was real and naturally warranted. There were just kids thrust in an adult live and let die environment with no context and riddles.
Apparently there was a deleted scene with Eric, despite earlier voicing his misgivings, telling Hank that he'd back him on his decision, whatever it ended up being.
That was a tough DM. Most first encounters are kobolds or goblins. Them? Nope, straight to a pissed off dragon god.
13:42 my favorite scene of the entire series! The way the noise echoes, how the horn calls out TIAMAT, the fact the horn came from a place where dragons die, and right when the noise is made, we cut to a dragon bone. This makes it a very eerie setting that I love so much!!
"I didn't hear that. I didn't hear that either!"
I always imagined the weapons were much more powerful and the kids didn’t know how to fully harness them. Hank is the oldest so he seemed to have the best command of his weapon. If the kids grow into adults with the weapons venger would be toast. This is just my imagine running wild. I remember getting up every Saturday as a kid just for this show!
They never practiced once. As a wizard there’s no time to guess 😂
Of all of them, Diana probably needed her weapon the least.
Truly one of the best episodes. Plus the one time Eric shows motivation rightfully.
20:43 I KNEW IT! All these years I could've sworn I heard Dungeon Master call Venger his son.
If Requiem had ever been broadcast, we'd have learned the truth.
There is a audio and story book version of requiem on here , I still don’t kno why they never Finnish it
Nice catch man!

@@jpm265 The network took fright because of the themes that the third series had explored, coupled with the rise of parents groups like the PTC there was a significant fear that advertisers would shy away as there were allegations that the cartoons promoted devil worship. That is simply a load of BS as watching Venger you see someone who not as powerful as he likes to believe he is and also suffers setbacks.
So Requiem despite being scripted never got to the drawing boards to be made
This show needs a reboot. They are grown ups and have a reunion at the amusement park. They reprise their characters but at advanced levels and very powerful.
I love how Vengear meant business. He was scary before they went in that cave. Then to see him defeated was unexpected and amazing. The final shot of Tiamet watching what happened gave me a chill.
Tiamet: whatever 😂
This cartoon was so popular in Brazil a car company actually made a commercial featuring these characters.
Okay, but let's be real: in an actual D&D game the party would have killed Venger without hesitation and rolled his corpse for loot.
And take every single magic weapon they can find in the graveyard (including the net).
And lose those Ranger perks from an alignment shift for killing a helpless opponent? No thank you!
Yes in the game. But for them it isn't a game, they're not remotely controlling avatars which bears little consequence to them like it would typical DnD players other than maybe time investment, they risk their own lives in real life and death situations. Also they are not murderers or atleast won't Purposefully kill someone even a villain like Venger, especially after this episode's climax, especially for something as petty as looting even for more powerful magic items.
@@tiamatmichellehart6821 this is strategy. Bye venger

Aw, geez, Venger...who could stay mad at you? You're just too cool!
Great show, great episode. thanks for uploading. Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, Aames, Most, Rich, these guys hung out with me in my living room every day. Feel sad for kids of this generation.
Dave Assanowicz nope, kids today don't have a clue, the late 70s into the mid 80s was the best time to be a kid
So do I! Its quite simply the order of things that made before the turn of the millennium fantastic.
E.g. you could only watch shows like this after school and Saturday morning.
Porn would come on after midnight and finish by 5am.
A kid wouldn't be allowed to do adult things, no matter how rich or powerful their parents were. Etc.
What a great script. I can't imagine any TV network agreeing to this now! The kids actually contemplate killing Venger. Brilliant.

Great news, its been produced. A fan animated it a couple years ago. Its here on youtube.
the best of of the whole series
This episode was nearly pulled for violence. It remains my favorite, particularly "I didn't do it for you, Venger, I did it for us"
That was some great writing right there. I would have loved a couple of episodes where the kids just give the DM the silent treatment and had misadventures (side quests) unrelated to DM missions.
The network and the producers went 'round and 'round on the script for this ep. Note that they never use the words "kill" or "death" -- at network insistence. I'd like to have seen the first draft script they submitted to the censors; my guess is they roughed Venger up a little physically before Hank made his decision, Uni's wound was probably more severe, and Hank (after he loses his bow to Venger's blast) might have even pinned him down and threatened him with a knife or something.
This was the one cartoon, that I would not miss...I was 13 or so...the intensity of this show, for a Saturday morning cartoon was way ahead of its time...after this was taken off the air, that was it for me for Saturday morning cartoons...
+kevinocooldaddy OMG, me too! After this particular episode, can't say I watched another D&D episode at all! The whole morality thing blew it for me as someone who played the game as a kid.
kevinocooldaddy so true!
Yeah this was one of the best ones because it was so dark.
The fear/realization of defeat and possible death on Venger was the truest victory they ever had on him.
"This what we've been waiting for." You got that right, Hank.
“As for how to overcome her…”
“NO RIDDLES! Just tell us straight!”
Those scowls on the players faces and the look of realization on the DM’s face? That’s when a DM realizes that he’s being too cryptic, the players are getting fed up and the game is in danger of breaking apart. So he finally comes clean and just tells them what they need to do to move the campaign forward.
This is one of the best episodes.

16:14 You can really see the look of 'okay, starting to regret my decisions.' in hanks face, and i love it.
I think this episode is a perfect encapsulation of playing D&D... With the players controlling the narrative, and throwing the DM's planned adventure out the window because they wanted to do something else with the session.
Damn Tiamat just straight-up owned Venger in his own house with no effort.
I was looking for this cartoon from my childhood. Nowadays they don't make cartoons of this quality anymore. Its good to have a fantasy. Children but also adults need that!
This episode would make an epic D&D storyline for RPG.
This animated series is a marvel! Perfect merger of action, life lessons, fantasy and heroism. I love how this episode is true to "The Godfather, Part 2" quote "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer". Wish the gang picked up some new weapons from the Dragon's Graveyard, would have been cool and interesting to see them master some different ones. When DM called Venger "my son", my heart literally skipped a beat! Always suspected there was a father/son and or mentor/student bond between them.

Being a player back then at the age of 14 and never missing an episode this one gave me goose bumps as a kid. Once me and my friends started talking D&D we couldn't stop.
My God that was a great episode haven't had any feelings on a cartoon for a long time. Cartoons these days don't even get close to this great Epic.
One thing that many viewers probably overlooked about this show (and THIS episode in particular) is the necessary moral decisions we have to make in life. I LOVE that this show had many life issues/lessons, at the expense of most of the cast and confirmed by that sometimes annoying Dungeon Master.
At the risk of getting all deep here, the lesson in this episode is a pretty complex one, but revenge (ju-on) is simply not the way to live. Nice. Very nice.
+umbrella0326 they never overlooked it. It was those damn parental groups that wanted to have the show kept clean and simple.
+michelrpg You know I wish all those damn "parenting" groups would just shut up. They don't know jack about anything.
I agree I wonder what would have happened if they actually whacked Venger.
Hanzo put it best in Kill Bill Vol. 1 when he said,"Revenge is a forest. There is no straight path. It is easy to lose your way." It fits the samurai mentality, look @ the tale of the 47 ronin, had they immediately set out to avenge their master;instead of waiting, they would have been true to their purpose as samurai who would welcome death in exchange for dying to avenge him.
@@zachmcmillan4060 Aribet from nwn she go in dark path because of revenge. But i choice not kill her. In kotor its same.
I remember watching this episode and thinking that it redeemed the whole show. Real people would reach the point where they’d had enough and would look to settle Venger once and for all. Watching it again it’s no wonder that Dungeon Master is so sad...they’re asking him to help them kill his son.
It was this level of ..... maturity or reality...it is hard to peg that elevated this show. I concur with you sir. Still hands down the best as far as writing and acting.

Take heart, Barbarian. Not everything in this graveyard deals death.
Eric gets to be the moral one ("We are?" while visibly terrified) and right (when he realizes the Weapons of Power are the key) for once. Hank bullys DM and then decides Venger has to die, again making someone else (OG waifu Sheila) the moral compass.
At the end, Tiamat's like "dumb little sh*ts".

This takes me back to Saturday morning cartoons. Anyone who was a kid in the 80s can relate I'm sure. I remember watching this very episode, I think it was the season 1 finale if I'm not mistaken. Hank was awesome in this! A good morale compass !
This may be one of the most emotional of all the Dungeons and Dragons episodes. Hank and the kids have had it with Venger and decide to kill him. But at the last moment, Hank shows him mercy that Venger probably never experienced from anyone and decides to let him live after all.
