You have the plot did Dungeons & Dragons all wrong. What you don't understand is that in the movie there is a group of people playing the game controlling the characters. The fact that the wizard couldn't attune to the helmet wasn't due to his level it was because the dungeon master didn't want him to. See the party was supposed to focus on the tournament and not the vault. The helmet not a tuning was a hint from the DM to stop focusing on the vault. The paladin was brought in to walk the characters through getting the helmet through this insanely high area because they wanted the item to get to the vault. When the players set the trap on the bridge the DM had to come up with an idea on the spot to get them through it so he came up with a hither thither staff and he got the idea because he was playing portal. The fact that the paladin could kill almost everything inside the dungeon and the players couldn't was to make them run away. And the fact that the players couldn't use the staff properly to get into the vault was another clue to the DM to stop trying to get into the vault. Finally the DM just had to say rocks fall the tentacles and kidnapped them all and put them in the tournament which was supposed to be the main focus of the whole campaign to begin with.

I have played D&D since the late 70's and worked with TSR on four D&D video games. I thought this movie was entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. The owlbear thing didn't bother me. It's a home brew exception that the DM made when the player rolled their character. Happens all the time. I would have like to see more bard magic. But Valor Bards are kind of boring. And the Wild Magic Sorcerer is not able to attune to the helmet but can cast reverse gravity ( a 7th level spell). I loved the depiction of Neverwinter, although I am partial to Waterdeep. I would have like to see at least one reference to Tomb of Horrors - but that is a Greyhawk realm.

Yeah, when I was watching the movie I was saying "why isn't the bard casting spells? Is he really a bard and not just a rogue who performs?". Later in the movie I saw the Major Image spell & I was like "finally... he casts a spell," but then I saw Simon dismiss it & that meant that the bard cast nothing.
He did dole out some Bardic Inspiration & did an Inspiring Speech though.

    • @targetdreamer257

Though looking at it I sort of understand they wanted to keep everything distinct for the uninitiated. If everyone is casting spells the general public is pretty dumb and won’t understand that more than one person can cast spells.
      Doric is the shape changer.
Holga is the beat things up one.
      Simon is the magic user.
I don’t like the choice but I understand the reason why. First get people hooked in then introduce more complex things like more than one person casting spells.
The general public has a very low INT. An individual is more intelligent.

Mordenkainen is supposed to originate from the Greyhawk realm, which is D&D's first realm, before Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance. Ah, Dragonlance, it would be good to see a live action version of that Saga. Instead of the Nine Hells, it would be to the Abyss with you. I believe the Gelatinous Cube was inspired by The Blob in the 50's, because their properties are so similar. Of course, the remake of the Blob is far more terrifying. And Intellect Devourer do not seek the most intelligent party members, but rather the lowest intelligent party members. They enter their heads, consume their brains, and possess members by replacing themselves in place of a brain. They know this because the tankiest of the party members are usually low in intelligence.

The Wyld Shape Ability uses the mechanics of the Beast Shape Spell. At Level 10 Druids can use Beast Shape 4 and turn into a Large Magical Beast.
The Owlbear in Pathfinder is classified as a Large Magical Beast [not a Monstrosity], so it is completely within the rules. w00t!!
