I would 100% watch a video on how to mix metals. Husband is convinced that every piece of hardware in the whole house must match or the house “looks thrown together”
Great video advice today! Personally I feel that a small room painted a dark colour becomes something of a warm hug or a cozy wrap, so comfortable and soothing
I've never tried decorating my space as I thought I would just suck at it. Your videos have helped so much! I've gained some confidence and have my bedroom 90% done. It makes me smile all the time. As someone who struggles with anxiety, having a well designed space is another tool in the box to help. Also, a mixing metals video would be great as I have many copper pieces that I love and am trying to incorporate them throughout my space. Thanks!
I’ve watched every single one of your videos when we just purchased our ideal home. I made a bold decision to paint the media room and my office dark. They are now my two favorite rooms in the whole house. I also took your advice of layering lighting and woah what a difference. ALSO took your advice on DIY turn down service- also wow, my husband loves it and it’s just something I do now every week night before dinner.. amazing advice we can actually implement
So awesome that you mentioned the ceiling colour does not have to be white!! I've been painting my ceilings different colours for years and I love it. Still need to try wallpapering the ceiling.
Especially in the bedroom, when I wake up and look at this boring white, I dont want to get up anymore.. but when the ceiling looks interesting, it wakes me up even more!
Would love a video on mixing metals! We just bought a early 2000’s home with EVERYTHING satin nickel. Would love to get your take on mixing it with over metals vs replacing all, which I likely couldn’t do all at once anyway.
I had a jealous person visit me recently and she criticized literally everything in my home but I finally broke when she said the beautiful white stone around my fireplace should be painted to better match the walls. I laughed so hard and said I'm not painting the damn stone are you crazy. God, some people just can't be happy for you.
Well, here is someone who paints everything white: small rooms, dark rooms, big rooms, ceilings 😂😂😂 But loved your points! ❤ I'll try to be more open-minded about other colors...maybe I could start introducing a warm white? 😅😂
Like my mother, everything white, black was banned from everywhere. The black tiles in our rented home were hard for her to bear.. :D But I like a little black. I ban grey, haha. I like colours, especially warm ones. Warm white already sounds good, have a try! :D
Awesome video! It's like the "rules of fashion" that just exist to sell us books and magazines, etc. Also, thank you so much for converting inches to cm!! Super helpful and considerate haha
I painted all my bedrooms white and I feel they are cold, clinical looking especially as Autumn is hear and I love Autumn colours so now looking to repaint the walls
Great video!... lots of useful information......loved hearing you say mixing metals is ok to do....I would love to see a video on how to mix them..... interesting knowing the myth about house plants purifying the air is not true, I've always heard that as well..... much more mentioned as well...thanks for such an eye opening video! 😊
One of my biggest fears is that I will one day have to live in white rooms with wall to wall carpeting. I would say a rug can be used over carpeting as long as the carpeting is a very flat weave. A thick oriental rug over plush carpeting is a trip hazard, especially for the elderly. Myth to bust: Never use large patterned wallpaper in a small space. John Fowler did it all the time. That alone busts that myth.
I love painted wood work. I bought an area rug that was too small for but I love it, so I got a larger area rug and layer them. First it looks so pretty and second it absorbs so much noise!
Over the years, we have painted our smaller rooms both dark and light colors and, honestly, dark walls and/or ceilings just don't work for us. Not only did the rooms feel smaller, but the darker colors were depressing once the novelty wore off. We've tried navy, olive, dark gray, and burgundy (one at a time, not altogether!) and the whole family agreed...not happy or welcoming spaces. We needed to compensate with more light fixtures and lamps, plus brighter/lighter colors in the furnishings, which was just too much work to make a room comfortable when a coat of paint did all that work for us. We are much happier (and our rooms are much more attractive) with lighter colors and natural light. I use dark colors in flooring or as accents to satisfy my need for contrast and interest.
My grandmother wallpapered the ceiling in a guest room with a medium scale rosebud pattern. Identical pink rosebuds with green leaves on a cream background. Whenever I stayed in that room, I would gaze at that ceiling in total adoration. That was 60 years ago, and I have never forgotten it.
Yes definitely would like to know how to mix metals for my kitchen & should it reflect the adjoining rooms say a dining room off the kitchen. Thank you
Great points! I’ve recently painted my living room dark blue except the wall facing the window- so any light (which is a bit limited tbh) is bounced back into the room. It was all white previously and you’re exactly right the colour in the permanently shadowed areas was an uninspiring dingy grey. Very pleased with my midnight blue, it’s added a whole new dimension to the space (never thought of it in terms of depth so thanks for that!). I also changed my death-by-beige furniture for lovely deep orange velvet sofas which really contrast well with the blue…and they have brass-tipped legs which has made me introduce a few other gold touches around the room even though my main metal is brushed pewter /silver. Thought it would really bother me but I’m pleasantly surprised at how well it all gels together, just by keeping to a brushed appearance. My ceiling is still white though as it runs into my kitchen space. Great video!
The ceilings in our new apartment is a real topic for me - thanks for the video❤ helped me a lot to maybe find some opportunities to take some attention to the ceilings
Great video! So glad you brought up mixed metals!! We're remodeling our kitchen and I love our nickel faucet but I really want bronze or gold for the drawer pulls. Also, I love using mixed metals for photo/art frames. Thank you!!
We definitely think alike 👌🏻 I love that you posted this video with this information because it just feels validating as an interior designer myself as I’m trying to retire but I’ve been an interior designer for 27 years and people don’t want me to retire but it will always be my first love. I just love your videos! 🙏🏼❌⭕️❌⭕️🤩
MIXED METAL VIDEO!!!My partner is building our house right NOW and we have to pick finishing and appliances. We love the look of copper but we are hoping to mix it with stainless steel. A video from you would be so helpful right now 🙏 you’re the only designer I take advice from because you have timeless taste.
Vivien....I love the idea of painting the ceiling. I had contemplated it for my new condo. However, my ceilings are only 8' tall. I was worried it would make my ceiling look lower. What do you think? I notice examples of painted ceilings in this video all have very high ceilings.
Finally someone came in favor of dark color in small spaces! I had a huge fight with my painter (we are friends, so its all good) about painting my small dining room in dark flat color. I won. It's my house after all. Now it's a "wow" room that everyone loves.
So interesting your comments about mixing different kinds of metal, please make a video talking about it if you can, love your channel 😍😍😍 thanks for sharing your wisdom🙏
Totally agree. On every point. Especially about original wood trim in homes. Sometimes it's beautiful, sometimes it's just God awful. And I think it looks so elegant painted.
It seems we share an equal eye. If there are any "you must never..." rules that are 100% true in every case I have yet to see one. I'd like to add that dark / low light rooms should consider being painted with semi-gloss. A flat paint will usually suck the last bit of interest / light from an already light starved area. Light bouncing around helps define spaces and objects. Painting woodwork really isn't a tough call for me. There are plenty of times that there is nothing that can be done to make cheap cuts of lumber attractive, no matter how nice the finish is. "You can put lipstick on a pig but it won't make it pretty." I truly love and appreciate well done carpentry and joinery but there is absolutely nothing beautiful about that floor at 6:39. And then there's the 'too much of a good thing made bad' issue. In that light, I am interested in your thoughts on painted wood floors. They used to be common, many years ago.
We painted our small hall bath with a darker rust color and are loving it. We also painted the ceiling the same color. I sometimes second guess but I really am glad we went bold! It has a mosaic tonal blue floor to accent!
this was a great video, thank you ! I’d love a video on painting woodwork and window frames. I know it’s great to contrast them with the walls but don’t know how to do it.
I have a small bedroom, and a friend and designer recommended to paint one wall a dark green. I hesitated bc of myth no. one, but then went ahead and did it anyway. I TOTALLY LOVE IT. I mix the green with earthy colors for textiles and it couldn’t be more cozy and cave-like. 😊

Yes, please make a video on mixing metals. I have an antique brass bed, curtain rods, and furniture drawer pulls. The door knobs and plumbing fixtures in my home are brushed nickel. I lean towards an eclectic english/french/American “farmhouse” vibe. I would love to change out my curtain rods to antiqued bronze or black and add a couple of floor lamps in the same finish. I would love copper drawer pulls in my kitchen (grayish blue cabinets). My designer feels adding more than two metals would not be a good idea. Thoughts?
Fully agree with all - WHO is there to judge? For me ALL design "rules" are mostly shortcuts to save me time - avoiding me to return to IKEA (or any other store ;-) plenty of times until I have got the piece that will really be functional and please MY eyes, not moving around furniture in my flat for weeks until it looks harmonious and natural to ME, not repainting three times before I get the "right" color, not spoiling my walls by drilling useless holes before I like what I (!) see .... (it all happened). For this, your video works perfectly, especially because you are explaining the why and showing alternatives and limits. Once again, great work, thank you!
After I finally chose the wall colours for my bedroom and the main living areas, I went with something a little lighter for the ceiling, contrasting with white molding. For example, my bedroom is Hidden Sanctuary (1375) for the walls, with Peace and Happiness (1380) for the ceiling (both Benjamin Moore). Eight years later, and I still love it.
Can you make a video about how to decorate and what color to paint hallways and stairwells? I have a Cape Cod house with an open, two sided living room split by a half open staircase. Im getting ready to do my living room over that also has a long hallway parallel. Living room will be a darker muted green with cream/beige accents. Floor is dark brown carpet.
I would love a video on mixed metals particularly accent pieces like copper (range hood, clocks, other accents, etc.), solid brass or bronze, iron, etc. I have iron doors, chandelier, drawer pulls, etc. in a large space all in oil rubbed bronze and want to add pops of other quality metals without it looking like a mess. Can metals be used like you would add 4-5 different colors into a room? When does a metal become (or does it) become a neutral background?
I never heard that plant purifies the air. What I did learn in my elementary school science class is that plants releases oxygen through photosynthesis.
What about the myth that you can’t hang a tapestry of dogs playing poker on your living room wall without making your home appear tacky and unsophisticated? 😉
Yes, Yes, Yes, and Yes. Thank you! Also, I get people wanting me to decorate their house because I have good taste/bad taste. I am all about living in a space and making it work verses getting a brand new place and designing it. My spaces are always evolving and I am more of a curator. That makes all the difference. Make what you got work. No new spaces! Mix up old and new. My favorite. I always get told I have Inviting flavor.
I think I still a bit square about wall and ceiling colours. I painted my whole house in white and I am trying to bring texture, colours with plants, decoration and frames and some furniture
I am actually planning to buy matching bedroom furniture despite that is often considered a mistake. They are one white oak bed, two night stands and one dresser. I think it will look ok because they are all very minimalistic looking. My husband hates metal bed and I hate upholstered bed so we are left with wooden bed.
I LOVE colorful walls in rooms, and always struggle to not have my house look like a crazy clown house. When we moved in to our current place, I forced myself to paint most of it a beautiful grey in the front rooms (Farrow and Ball Cornforth White) followed by F&B Bone in the den, and white for our bedroom, because we have a lot of art, and i try as much as possible to have my color pop in the furniture, cushions etc. Both F&B painted rooms still look fabulous after 10 years, that paint is amazing. Now we're thinking of selling, and the various real estate agents have all told us we need to paint everything white. Ugh. That would be a great video! Common myths about what you need to do to get your place ready to sell. Obviously de-cluttering, but do we really need to re paint white? What else can we do to make it as appealing as possible to as many buyers as possible? I look at a lot of real estate listings, and it seems as though the prevailing esthetic among sellers and their agents is to make the space look as though no one has ever lived there. Always appreciate your videos.
Put the effort into shining the shine absolutely everywhere especially any touchable surface. Start packing away whatever you can. Turn on all the lights and possibly add a few even if portable that would excite you to have for yourselves. Hint: A motivated buyer will be excited to do their own painting style! Also give your house a name and make a small crafted sign so it stands out or at least use the name on the flyer or brochure. :)
No, painting white is not a rule unless really warranted. Put the effort into clean and pleasing updates. Pull out all the stops to show the home is high energy and well maintained.
Re: rugs and carpet, you can see in photos of the turn of the century 1800/1900 they even used layered oriental etc. rugs for a really maximalist and comfortable effect.
I would 100% watch a video on how to mix metals. Husband is convinced that every piece of hardware in the whole house must match or the house “looks thrown together”
Me too! I’d love some tips on mixing metals
SAME! ❤ please make one
My husband is the same!!! Lol
Yes
Yes please make a video on mixing metals!
I love that you teach technique and not just trends. And I love that your style is very classy.
Great video advice today! Personally I feel that a small room painted a dark colour becomes something of a warm hug or a cozy wrap, so comfortable and soothing
Yes, more mixed metal discussion! I’m always torn about introducing a different finish in the bathrooms.

Love the dark paint in small rooms ❤️ You look fantastic ☺️

I like this channel. No crazy long boring intro or outro. To the point. I appreciate it.
Awesome video! It's like the "rules of fashion" that just exist to sell us books and magazines, etc.
Also, thank you so much for converting inches to cm!! Super helpful and considerate haha
Do a video on mixing metals! Do a video on mixing metals! 🥳
I painted all my bedrooms white and I feel they are cold, clinical looking especially as Autumn is hear and I love Autumn colours so now looking to repaint the walls
@CCRider very true but it’s really splitting hairs by choosing a slightly warmer white over a slightly cooler white. It all still reads white!
Such a revolutionary concept for me : ceiling as the 5th wall !!! Possibilities become endless! Thank you for this video and btw, lovely earrings 😍
Just in time as I was looking for something to watch! Love the content! Would love to see the video of matching metals. Thanks!
I would love to see a video on mixing metals. I have trouble doing that and would find a video on how to do that beneficial.

They do but you need like 600 of the them in the house for it to work LOL.
I mix metals but generally I stick with two metals and make them opposite of each other. So shiny brass with a dull chrome for example.
Ty, can never get enough of you and decorating tips!!
what about painting brick? Thoughts and opinions?

I loved this video, great and nuanced advice! Also would love to see a video on mixing metals 😊

Just go for it! It did it in my kitchen (we have silver faucets too) and it looks stunning! I get a lot of compliments and wows.
I would love to see a video on mixing metals. I think it is such a cool look but can be tricky to pull off. Thanks!

I had seen it done in lower ceilings but usually a lighter or medium tone color, not dark. Maybe not doing darker colors?
Finally someone came in favor of dark color in small spaces! I had a huge fight with my painter (we are friends, so its all good) about painting my small dining room in dark flat color. I won. It's my house after all. Now it's a "wow" room that everyone loves.
Interesting concept on small rooms/dark paint… and non-white ceiling! thank you for busting so many myths
I love the ceiling color ideas! I have never thought of it.
Absolutely one of my favorite videos!!! I learned a lot and feel open to fresh ideas for my home! Thank you!!!
So interesting your comments about mixing different kinds of metal, please make a video talking about it if you can, love your channel 😍😍😍 thanks for sharing your wisdom🙏
I like the har way to express things openly 👍 more clear thanks
Totally agree. On every point. Especially about original wood trim in homes. Sometimes it's beautiful, sometimes it's just God awful. And I think it looks so elegant painted.

Great advice on those little dark rooms, hard to know what to do with them
We painted our small hall bath with a darker rust color and are loving it. We also painted the ceiling the same color. I sometimes second guess but I really am glad we went bold! It has a mosaic tonal blue floor to accent!
Totally need a video on mixed metals. I’m totally lost on this! Thanks for your videos. Love them!
In other words, do what you want in your home. Regardless of what others think and say. Great tip's!
this was a great video, thank you !
I’d love a video on painting woodwork and window frames.
I know it’s great to contrast them with the walls but don’t know how to do it.
im.so amazed.with your ideas.. i just have a question how about mixing metal, wood and ceramics.designs would that be.ok?
I like mixing metals and would appreciate your thoughts on doing it well
I have a small bedroom, and a friend and designer recommended to paint one wall a dark green. I hesitated bc of myth no. one, but then went ahead and did it anyway. I TOTALLY LOVE IT. I mix the green with earthy colors for textiles and it couldn’t be more cozy and cave-like. 😊
You so sweet, omg, I can watch your videos forever. I love them more than Lane Fox's ones. There's something to your style that makes me want to watch your videos. Thank you so much!
Wife and I were debating the merits of a dark ceiling in our hallway. I threw a swatch of paint up there while I was changing a light fixture and she was instantly sold. Hallway is 3x20, so very constraining. Going with light gray over dark gray on the walls and an even darker gray on the ceiling. Test patches look amazing.
I painted my entire office on the dark side of the house in a gorgeous mid-olive green and it is SO much better than the dingy bluewhite before
After I finally chose the wall colours for my bedroom and the main living areas, I went with something a little lighter for the ceiling, contrasting with white molding. For example, my bedroom is Hidden Sanctuary (1375) for the walls, with Peace and Happiness (1380) for the ceiling (both Benjamin Moore). Eight years later, and I still love it.
I appreciated it so much! Surely, I would love to know how to combine different metals! Thank you! 💜

Yaaayyyyy you finally made a new video. have been waiting for ages. Thank you so much. And as usual, its excellent, inspiring and on point. 🏆🌞🌻🎉🎉🎉🌻🌻🌻
Yes, please do a video on mixed metals and thank you for the great information
Thanks for another video with great tips!
Would it be possible to create a video about bathroom decoration?
Great video, thank you! Yes please do a video on mixing metals!
Metal mixing video, yes and it would be a definite watch!
Yes, please do a video on mixing metal finishes!
Great video. Yes to mixed metals.
Here for the myths, but really appreciate your wit! 😉
You are rocking that two-tone hair. How do you pull that off?! It looks edgy and elegant all at once.
Yes I'd like to see a video on how to mix metals. I've done it a bit in parts of my home so hoping I'm on the right track.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my white walls, blond woods, and white ceilings and am so grateful to finally have them! I'll never part with them.
Please do a video on mixed metals. What goes with chrome other than black.
That was good! Thank you. Can you also make a video on mixing metals please?
I've been a bit scared to paint a room a dark colour because of the small room issue. It was great to see it mentioned here and debunked!
Love to see video on mixed metals 👍
Great video as always. Educational, funandwell edited. Thanks, Viv!
I think I still a bit square about wall and ceiling colours.
I painted my whole house in white and I am trying to bring texture, colours with plants, decoration and frames and some furniture
Yes please for video mixing metals
Could definitely use advice on mixing house metals because I'm renting!
Excellent videos! Would love to see a video on mixing metals.
I love it. Thanks for the tips. Also where did you get that beautiful lamp and the trophy behind you? 😮
I am actually planning to buy matching bedroom furniture despite that is often considered a mistake. They are one white oak bed, two night stands and one dresser.
@@kathyjunge7732 but do I have to paint everything white?
No, painting white is not a rule unless really warranted. Put the effort into clean and pleasing updates. Pull out all the stops to show the home is high energy and well maintained.
Re: rugs and carpet, you can see in photos of the turn of the century 1800/1900 they even used layered oriental etc. rugs for a really maximalist and comfortable effect.
I would be very interested in a video on how to mix metals. Thank you!
You mentioned coloured ceiling. I have double height ceiling and I’m thinking of dark grey, even charcoal. It’s sloping ceiling
