I think the whole warm white trend has gone overboard. Like in my Home country 4000K light is called "cool light" when in reality it is more close to neutral. My bathroom looks ugly when I put in 2700K or 3000K bulbs because the white tile turns yellow. It looks dark and uninviting. So I think it depends on the room which type of light is best.
I have found this, too. The warmer lights will make certain colors look dirty! I had to swap out the warm bulbs for something more in the neutral cool leaning zone with dimmers. The warm bulbs made the freshly painted light blue look dirty! The warm bulbs work in rooms with warmer color palettes though. With colors it is way more complicated than just putting warm bulbs in every room.
Yes it depends on the room. In my bedroom I have from 2700k to 3500k depending on mood and activities all the way to 5000k in my laundry room and my garage where I need lots of light for tasking and cleaning.
I agree. My favorite color is blue, so I have touches of it throughout the house. Right now the hydrangeas are in bloom, so I have several bouquets of the blue beauties. I tuck white flowers in among them. The whole effect would be ruined under a warm, yellowish light.
TLDR: Cool temperature light should be used, but it has to be used thoughtfully and appropriately in terms of both time of day and location in the home. Hi, I love your videos. Often things are more complicated than they appear at first. You bring up lighting temperature/warmth in this video, and I see many comments on it. As a professional research scientist with specialized training and work experience in lighting and health, I wanted to share something I would love to see make it over to the design world. In general, warmer lights are more relaxing and comfortable, and cold lights are more jarring visually and make you unable to unwind. It's all due to our biology. You also want to use it in any space where you need to be highly productive during the day, such as a home office if you work from home. For the rest of the time, using warmer lights is a better choice, as you said. Exposure to blue-rich light in the evening is detrimental to your health; the most apparent effect is that it can make it harder to fall asleep. This includes cold temperature bulbs and screens on TVs, computers, tablets, and phones. Many smart bulbs and smart home products can change the color temperature to match what is best for your health automatically. Most computers, tablets, and phones also have this technology built in.
Please be careful with peel-stick flooring. I moved into my new place and the previous tenant destroyed the bathroom floors doing that. They came to strip it and wax it and there’s still permanent stains
There's almost nothing I dislike more than 'bought the showroom' approach. Furniture pieces should play well together, not look like littermates. I actually really like the sofa that matches the chair I recently bought, but I want something different. Haven't found it yet.
So many good tips! I am obsessed with bringing a tape with me when I go shopping for house stuff, but having one on your key ring? That’s true designer level 😃🙌 Such a great idea 💡❤️
Smart girl! I like her. I'm an older single male and always let my wife do all the decorating, picking paint colors, building designs ideas then tweak them so they can be done right. I am so bad at this decorating but do have a styles I like and just need to go for it. She inspires me to do so. Thanks
I'm a renter, and my landlord installed amber "boob" fixtures in the bedroom and the kitchen. They are ugly, and make the rooms dark and muddy, and it's hard on the eyes, hard to see what I'm doing! So I don't use them much. There is no overhead light in the living room, so I hung a woven rattan lamp from the ceiling next to my upright piano, and put a row of "closet door"mirrors edge to edge on the opposite wall, to reflect the light around the room. I miss the old incandescent light bulbs... so I look for daylight bulbs. It gives a nice, clear more neutral light.
I’d go with the number one brand, Hue. They now also have light switches than you can install in place of your normal ones. I still have additional Hue light switches. The great thing is, you can group all kinds of different lamps, and you can create scenes with different brightness and white balance.
I have a 100 year old home that got a major addition about 40 years ago and the mismatched flooring is a real problem especially for the older half. I have 3 different hardwoods adjoining each other, some incredibly tall transition strips, and the older portion of the floor is so wavy that the only possible new flooring for the kitchen was vinyl sheet! But covering the original heartwood pine planks and the gorgeous hickory because it doesn't match the newer flooring would be a crime! 😉 So we got wood plank printed vinyl so at least the main floor is all wooden looking. After you come in through the mudroom with the broken tiles, at least. 😬🤣
I have a few diys laying around. I have 2 art deco dressers that could use a refinish, a Victorian settee with a broken arm, rooms to be painted, and a mid-century lamp that needs to be fixed. Probably too much, but I just couldn't pass up all the low cost, beautiful furniture and the lamp! Really, the dressers look great as is, I just want to restore them.
We’re building a house and we have one leather couch and recliner but want a different 2 couch to fill the space and the bedroom I’m definitely not going to match everything. It is too much when i think envision now. Thank you for the information. 😊
I decorate in Orkcore. The look is dominated by red, grey, and brown. Brown leather and brown wood. Grey concrete, grey iron, occasionally grey stained wood such as my house number sign. Red leather, sedona red stained wood, a bit of red trim, red painted roof. Dark ages war/hunting weapons such as battleaxes, shields, and spears as decorations. Hide rugs and Navajo rugs. Raw materials and recycled materials. Exposed industrial elements such as large bolts where practical. Pointiness added everywhere it can be done safely, such as pointy plants, pointy curtain-rods, pointy fencing, pyramid tacks, horns, antlers.
I've had my bed for 5 years, I just bought to matching side tables to go with it because I love the look, their size is obviously perfect for the bed and I wanted this sleek look in my opinion! I also have the coffee table matching the TV stand but I might change this one 😅
Another awesome and helpful video. Then you so much. I would love to see a video on cushions. I am so confused what colours and sizes to chose. I got myself since awesome high quality cruelty free cushion inserts but I am unsure what covers to buy.
The nice thing about cushion covers is they are small enough and cheap enough, you can try lots of different colours and patterns. If your overall decor is fairly neutral, buy a couple of basic covers in different happy colours that you like, or use existing fabric in your home - even drape your favourite garment over one as an experiment. Pop them on your couch one at a time and see how the colours make you feel. If your decor is colourful and busy already, pick one of the colours and go for a plain rather than patterned cover. If you prefer neutral, get different textured materials in the same basic colourway. Best of luck!
Luxurious rooms may have a pair of matching chairs, but each piece of furniture is considered to be an art object in its own right so the great pieces just play well together.
I’d add, other big no-nos are when folks put table or floor lamps in view of the windows, TVs above fireplaces (sorry), anything macrame, dark ceiling paint, giant refrigerators too big for the space, overly reflective furniture, glass coffee tables, too many patterned furniture pieces, laminated flooring, and wallhangings with cliche text!
I love your channel and your design sense :) Could you possibly do a video about pattern mixing or just dealing with patterns on things like curtains and walls. I have used a beautiful wallpaper by Nina Campball called Swan Lake, which I adore, but now I can't figure out what curtains, bedding or carpet to use with it without it looking dreadful 😪
We have a DYI kitchen that we have not started yet. Therefore the old one is literally falling down around me. Don’t you love (hate) the mind freeze moment😵💫…My home reflects me well, cluttered, eclectic and scattered.
i do disagree with the flooring, same as a beutiful rug, mix match floor done intentionally can be beautyfull specially if you play with tile or diferent shapes to frame areas, for instance if you have a hall adjacent to an open kitchen or living room, having a contrast between spaces is quite interesting to the eye in a positive way. The only clear sin of mix matching is when you try to fool people into puting a diferent floor that's slightly different than the original and stoping at the half of a space instead of going all the way.
What are your thoughts on mismatched flooring in different rooms? Many houses have wood floors in the main areas and carpet in the bedrooms, tile in the bathrooms, etc. In my house our bottom floor main flooring is a mid tone wood plank, but we have lighter planking in the bedrooms. We did do the flooring at different times and I honestly wish we did the lighter flooring everywhere, but not sure if it’s actually considered a design “don’t” since the flooring is segmented in separate rooms (like with a closable door in between).
Imho, there's nothing terribly wrong with that. If the doorway is open, the mismatch can look wrong sometimes (depending on the floor types, I'm sure some work together just fine). Behind the closed door - totally okay
I like matching wood furniture especially in the bedroom and dining room. European royalty had matching furniture, so everyone wanted it. It looks less stressful than unmatched furniture does.
ive seen other design youtubers who make videos like this but their "sins" are heavily based on their preferances or trends. ill just say i really appreciate that none of these are style specific, you could have any type of esethitic and apply the tips here.
OK I am enlightened. THIS is why I hate lamps turned on during the day or even candles. There is too much of a difference in the light color and something looks wrong. Posh I know why you have that lamp on in your vid, but could you get a lower or dimmer bulb that matches the daylight?
Smart lights can help a lot. Mine use cooler light in the day and warmer in the evening. They were a good investment in areas where the lighting needs vary.
I once visited a home, and EVERYTHING matched: the dining room, living room, bedroom. Turned out the owner was in a witness protection program, and his house had been "decorated" by the government.
I absolutely hate warm light bulbs. Im a creative and I constantly deal with color and warm light to me makes everything look like it has nicotine film over it. I also have a lot of plants. I swapped out all the warm recess light bulbs for daylight bulbs. The old bulbs were so yellow it was annoying LOL So many designers love warm lighting, but I just can't.
Same! I'm an art director married to a photographer and we both hate warm lightbulbs that cast a yellow or orange light. 5000K is actually the colour-temperature equivalent of natural daylight so it provides a clean light that shows true colour. Daylight-balanced bulbs FTW!
Agree totally! I just built a new home and I had them put in 5000k lightbulbs throughout the house. It allows the true color of all of my paint, flooring and artwork to show. A yellower bulb casts such a sickly yellow on everything.
I actually had a floor company recommend purposefully turning the floor layout or using a strip. They didn’t want to take up and redo the existing floor planks at the doorways. This was a definite NO THANKS from me.
3000K is my preferred lighting… I actually loathe anything less than that, and I can not understand why people like yellow lighting, like the small lamp behind you, lol. But aside from that minor disagreement, thank you for a great video!! I am playing catch up and appreciate how practical your advice is!!
You are so right again about all you touched on!!! And I whole heartedly agree about faux plants. Green is very healing as well. Apparently too, the mind cannot differentiate between a real and faux plant. And, if you place a faux plant or flowers in a clear vase, add some water. Thnx for sharing your valuable knowledge with us 🤩 What to do if we stay in one room with only a door n small rectangle ventilation just above it as natural sourse of light? warm light mks the room depressing n cool bright light brings on brighter look... Hi , I love your videos! I would like to know what pillows you sleep on that mattress, I have the same but the pillows i got for free isn’t the ones we tried on the store! Are yours foam ? And your mattress firm or soft?
My problem with lighting is this: I have white/gray hair. ‘Warm’ lighting especially in the powder room and bathroom makes my hair look YELLOW. Very bad look for white/gray hair. But I don’t want the hospital/sterile look either. How do I handle that?
There are different degrees of temperature in bulb types and brands. I have a particularly difficult bathroom where a too-warm bulb makes it look very yellow, but a cool bulb made it feel like a gas station. I eventually found halogen bulbs from Sylvana that were on the warm-side, but not nearly as yellow as the LEDs and incandescent bulbs I was previously trying. It may take a few trials, but you'll find the right bulbs!
You be unique, just like everybody else, and follow this advice on how not to be old fashioned. :) We all had suites of furniture. Now we all don't have suites of furniture. I'm a bit of a contrarian but it seems to me if a person wants to be unique, shouldn't one not do the new fashioned thing and perhaps go back to the old fashions, tweaking them to fit one's own tastes? Just a thought.
I have a matching vanity unit and tall cabinet in one of the bathrooms (they are really well-made in solid teak wood and that was pretty hard to find) and now I am worried it looks a little tasteless... Having said that the room is really narrow so I don't think anyone is actually looking at both pieces of furniture at the same time. Not committing any of the other sins thankfully!
Enjoy what you love & works for your individual needs . In the bathroom , function & storage should come first . Interest & individuality can be added w/ towel colors etc. & perhaps art . ( I have a ltd . ed . print w/ picture light & coordinating color faux oriental area rug in our only bathroom - guests have commented favorably on the " special touches " . )
I think quality wood is never a bad choice. We have matching bedroom furniture. Chest of drawers, dressing table, wardrobe. They belonged to my husband’s grandmother and will never be split apart. We do have a modern bed frame because my husband is crazy tall and needed a Cal King length mattress. All rules have exceptions. We love his grandmother and the furniture is like a hug from her every time I walk into our room.
@@wendyduncan9084 Agree that nothing can replace quality wood pieces . Having been a designer working w/ pieces by Baker , Henredon , etc. , groups balanced by an accent piece , quality fabrics & art and / or accessories is always in good taste . So few companies today offer well-made , well-designed pieces that can be handed down & appreciated by the next generation . 🥰
Oh for Heaven's sake! Why should you worry that your quality furniture is "tasteless," just because someone online says mismatched is "in"? A few years from now, they will go back to matched sets. Just like in the 50s, everyone had white metal or wood kitchen cabinets. In the 70s and 80s, that all changed to finished wood. After 2000, the white kitchen returned. Anything to keep selling
Hi. I really like your videos. I have a question and it will be great if you can respond it. Do you think Ikea Skogsta dining table look like farm house style. I do not like farm house but I like this table. It looked a bit farm house style to me. Thank you.

I live in a 100 year old stone house so everything makes sense...
Lots of chat on this thread about how real people need bright light in areas vs the designer dictates of soft light only. Which leads me to one of my pet peeves about home designers. THERE IS A VAST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PREPARING A ROOM FOR A PHOTO SHOOT AND MAKING A COMFORTABLE, USABLE AND INVITING LIVING SPACE. One small example would be piling so many pillows on a couch that no one can sit on it. Don't get me wrong, I love a good pillow, but couches are for sitting! Another is painting everything gray just 'cause it's the in thing. Gray environments are cold, institutional and off-putting. Can you really see a family relaxing and kabitzing together in cold, sterile rooms? Nah. Another is filing books so the spines of the book face inward (a recent trend) so you can't see them to service some kind of ridiculous color asthetic, or likewise, covering them with plain paper so you can't see what the books are but the colors are "nice". In the pillow vein, sure you can cover your beds in pillows, but every day you have to schlep them on and off to actually use the bed. Who's got time for all that in real life? Alternating decor for seasons and holidays is perfectly fine, but slavishly following the latest color trends dictated by the 'designers from on high' is silly and needlessly expensive. I think these are far more 'sinful' than the items mentioned in the video. Home design is about designing a HOME, not a show case. People, don't be sheep! Make your home practical, warm and welcoming for your family and friends. Ignore the siren song of revenue-generating designers unless their ideas truly help your life in as many ways as possible! And one last thought that is just my opinion: can we please get past putting words of what things are on every thing? When I go into the kitchen I know it is the kitchen without having the word 'Kitchen' on the wall to remind me. This trend is so tired!
I agree about the book spines. That has always seemed ridiculous to me. Why be offended by furniture suites that match, but embrace all white or grey walls, furniture and accessories throughout the house? Seems very 'matchy' and boring to me. Since I live in an area that gets a lot of snow in the winter, I appreciate some colour in my surroundings. My preference is interiors that have unique furnishings and curated accessories that reflect the style and interests of the people that live there.
@@maureenmccrackin6933 i could not agree moreover! Your decorating tastes mirror mine exactly except I want lots of color. I call my decor asthetic "Early Grandma" featuring primary colors!
I have a rule: for dinner I never enter to restaurants with cool light bulbs, I just feel too exposed and my flaws accentuated, it doesn't allow me to relax. So let alone home! (Only for kitchen and toilet)

I have to say I cannot stand that yellow light!!! My whole house is filled with light bulbs that are 5000 kelvins! Just before it gets blue. White light. My house is still warm and inviting due to the beautiful original hardwood floors and mix of modern and traditional decor. Yellow light just looks dingy to me. I would only use it in a bedroom.
Best comment about so called "warm" yellow lighting. I replaced all my yucky yellow lighting with white daylight bulbs. What a refreshing welcome that elevated the space. One con of yellow lighting for elderly people, is that it makes them feel sleepy all day. That is why nursing homes switched to daylight white lighting to keep people feeling elevated & energerzied to enjoy their home living environment.
Measuring 😁 when we bought our house we already had a good bed and I just couldn't justify buying a new one. I actually cut off windowsills to fit it in the bay window in our bedroom 😜😂😎
Most of these are not mistakes. They opinions. Decorate your space to make you happy. I don't have any plants, and I am fine with that. Faux plants still need to cleaned, and I don't want spend time dusting a fake plant. I don't things like baskets, little footstools or a bunch of tiny tables on the floor. To me that is useless clutter that isn't of any use and often just get in the way. ANY time someone says 'frowned upon by designers', I laugh. Who cares what designers think or what the trends are? The over use of white, beige and gray just shows how boring the majority of trends are. And now there seems to be movement to paint rooms black - a way to make a space dark and feel cramped. I grew up in house with a lot of matching furniture. It was all hand carved teakwood. It was beautiful and I am glad my mother didn't follow 'the rules' when she bought it.

In general, warmer lights are more relaxing and comfortable, and cold lights are more jarring visually and make you unable to unwind. It's all due to our biology. I will spare the details, but the highlight is that our body's master internal clock is set by light exposure, particularly blue light. Sunlight has a lot of blue light in it, which your eyes sense and send a sigma; to your brain to set the master clock, your circadian rhythm. This signal evolved to be sent in the morning, close to waking up. Interruption of this process can lead to various health issues, from metabolic rates to mental health to increased workplace and motor vehicle accidents.

Faux plants are definitely fine!!
We had that 1977's sofa chair when I was a kid haha, I miss shopping at Sears.
Smart girl!
I’d love a video on smart bulbs.. just show me how yours work lol I can’t pick out one to start with because there are too many options
I’d go with the number one brand, Hue. They now also have light switches than you can install in place of your normal ones. I still have additional Hue light switches. The great thing is, you can group all kinds of different lamps, and you can create scenes with different brightness and white balance.
@@peggygenoway what does mercury have to do with anything?!
I just added greenery;
huge difference!👍
Regarding measurement also make sure your door, stairs and entryway allow the furniture in and out.
Thank you for the tip about different heights! I think I was missing that!
I shuddered at the sight of that all white kitchen. But other than that, I absolutely love all of your tips and suggestions!
Amen on the light bulbs! The cool tones actually make me feel yucky and stressed.
Aly sent me here. I would lovvveee to see her do your makeup
I love my cool lights lol! But everything else was spot on. Thanks for a great video.
Miss-match flooring; I have that problem. You’re right on about it!
"That dresser on the side of the road..." Argh!!! Busted!! LOL!
Nothing wrong with that dresser on the side of the road if you refinished it or paint it.
Aly Art mentions you in her latest Marilyn video! You should totally go watch it!!
Why? Because someone online told you to?
@@wms72 uhm because he realized there might be a different approach which may work better?
Such amazing ideas! So happy to have discovered your channel, Vivien! 💗
Very informative and very important too. Big money saver indirectly. Thanks for the heads up!! Cool!!!
Thanks Vivien lots of great information I always thought that matching furniture was great but you’re right I am unique and special
I just found my new obsession with these videos!!! Love every single one of them! They are so useful and funny… thanks!!!❤❤❤❤
We have a DYI kitchen that we have not started yet. Therefore the old one is literally falling down around me. Don’t you love (hate) the mind freeze moment😵💫…My home reflects me well, cluttered, eclectic and scattered.
Would love a video on lighting bedrooms, great rooms, hallways. I have a 5.5 bedroom, 3 baths. Lighting is dated. This would be so valuable!
I was looking at my plants waiting to increase my productivity, but I'm still eating cookies and watching videos...
i do disagree with the flooring, same as a beutiful rug, mix match floor done intentionally can be beautyfull specially if you play with tile or diferent shapes to frame areas, for instance if you have a hall adjacent to an open kitchen or living room, having a contrast between spaces is quite interesting to the eye in a positive way.
Behind the closed door - totally okay
different floors are ugly when you dont have a door separating. like it is shown in the video.
Hi I just found your channel and I'm addicted to it. I love it!!!!
I like matching wood furniture especially in the bedroom and dining room. European royalty had matching furniture, so everyone wanted it. It looks less stressful than unmatched furniture does.
Lone Fox is the best!!Love him!!
ive seen other design youtubers who make videos like this but their "sins" are heavily based on their preferances or trends. ill just say i really appreciate that none of these are style specific, you could have any type of esethitic and apply the tips here.
Wait a minute. My neighbour has matching furniture sets too. 🤔
New fave channel
I absolutely hate warm light bulbs.
Im a creative and I constantly deal with color and warm light to me makes everything look like it has nicotine film over it. I also have a lot of plants. I swapped out all the warm recess light bulbs for daylight bulbs. The old bulbs were so yellow it was annoying LOL So many designers love warm lighting, but I just can't.
Yes, yes!!
Yes I’m an artist and I cannot deal with that awful yellow light. I use all daylight bulbs.
So what is that like the 9mm rope chain...? I like it looks good. 9mm 18"?
Love, love the Helix Ultra mattress custom made for me. Bought pillows, covers etc.
*No Sins* . Wow, that feels great to know I'm doing things right.
I keep a measuring tape in my purse--it sets off security scans. The female officers totally get why I keep one in my purse. :)
You could also get dried flowers
I actually had a floor company recommend purposefully turning the floor layout or using a strip. They didn’t want to take up and redo the existing floor planks at the doorways. This was a definite NO THANKS from me.
😱im glad you didn't listen!
For all those plant lovers, an excellent read is: "The Secret Life of Plants" by Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird. Thanks so much again for your expertise and in clueing those if us who are unaware, in! 💯💯💯💯💯💯💐🌿🌱🪴🌻😊
Painters tape was a great Idea. 👍
Thnx for sharing your valuable knowledge with us 🤩
What to do if we stay in one room with only a door n small rectangle ventilation just above it as natural sourse of light? warm light mks the room depressing n cool bright light brings on brighter look... Am confused 🤔.. (Had asked this qs earlier too in one of your vdos) 😁

Hi , I love your videos!
I would like to know what pillows you sleep on that mattress, I have the same but the pillows i got for free isn’t the ones we tried on the store!
Are yours foam ?
And your mattress firm or soft?
love these tips so much, the matching furtinure hit me right in the heart tho haha
I don’t like warm lights at all.
My problem with lighting is this:
I have white/gray hair.
@@jennl8593 😊
Lamp shades change the color as well.
Stay on the mid range of 3000 to 4500 in the warm spectrum but go higher on the lumens and have them on dimmers.
5000K is actually the temperature equivalent of natural daylight so it provides a clean light that shows true colour.
Thank you.
Ali Art has just mentioned you in her last video. She thinks that with your facial features and her make-up abilities to recreate celebrities...you would be.. Marilyn Monroe!!!
Kisses. I love your content.
Could you please deal with the topic of wall art for those that cannot go thrifting please? My style is traditional rustic cottagecore. I live in a 100 year old stone house so everything makes sense...
I am now decorating my flat. Measurring tape is a staple in my bag. :D
What about lighting for reading?
To avoid matching, I always think of what Oprah called it - “matchy matchy poopoo”. 😅
Where do you shop your furniture and decor from?

So distracted by the stripes not lined up on your top. The seamstress in me is screaming.
eco smart now makes light bulbs with a switch and 5 settings right on the light bulb. They’re not really expensive either. I got them at Home Depot.
I have a rule: for dinner I never enter to restaurants with cool light bulbs, I just feel too exposed and my flaws accentuated, it doesn't allow me to relax. So let alone home! (Only for kitchen and toilet)

I was considering a beautiful sofa but the store SA stop me and ask me to go and mesure my entryway……..oh boy he was right….
I'm guilty of the dyi projects and thinking too big.
Thanks for the great tips 😊
I have to say I cannot stand that yellow light!!! My whole house is filled with light bulbs that are 5000 kelvins! Just before it gets blue. White light. My house is still warm and inviting due to the beautiful original hardwood floors and mix of modern and traditional decor. Yellow light just looks dingy to me. I would only use it in a bedroom.
Yes! 5000K is actually the temperature equivalent of natural daylight so it provides a clean light that shows true colour.
Who else is here because of AlyArt 😂
Measuring 😁 when we bought our house we already had a good bed and I just couldn't justify buying a new one. I actually cut off windowsills to fit it in the bay window in our bedroom 😜😂😎
Do you think TV ON THE WALL OF THE LIVING ROOM IS A GOOD IDEA. Thanks 🙏
My husband is not allowing me to warm down the light bulbs from cool white 😢
The previous owners of our home had all cool light bulbs throughout the house, switched them all right away to warm.
Wow so beautiful vlog ❤❤❤I just love it...
Hi, can you also share where to buy a similar lamp to the one in your background, please?
It was a thrift store find!
You are hilarious with your three piece bathroom mistakes, and your look with supporting music! and your hanging toilet paper as curtains. Haha, lol.
Video is great! Just an FYI, your chapters are rolled over from a previous video.
thanks for the tips!
Thank you ❤
