It would be cool to see small, not so great looking apartments largely improved by good decoration instead of huge. gorgeous, expensive looking apartments very obviously well decorated. Like... show me the magic not the obvious stuff.
As a designer myself, the one rule you should always ignore when decorating a small apartment is the one about not pushing all of your furniture against the walls. In a small space it is almost always mandatory to push furniture against a wall. I have an 1100 ft, 3 BR home and all rooms have furniture to the wall. The livingroom only has one wall that will accommodate a standard 3 seat sofa. Don't try to fight the layout of a small living space. Put the big pieces where they have to go, then dazzle everyone with wall color, art work and the other little things.
Well i unfortunately don’t have any pictures for you but if it helps i can say from experience in my not well kept, built in the 1950s, 400sqft, $500 a month, apartment; the advice about Curtains, rugs, and lighting do make a HUGE difference and really makes a place feel cozier and look nicer. Went from “possible cockroach infestation” to “warm happy home”
They drive me nuts - I know it’s for the photo but no cords (even carefully tucked away ones), no life, no electronics, just a moment in time or never touched room. It is so unrealistic.
“…until your sofa becomes nothing but the physical manifestation of constant regret and the reminder of all your bad decisions” You really know how to make a point! ✅👌😂
I love the sofa she shows there.. xD But nevertheless I always choose neutral colours for expensive things, just like she said, that's better than regretting..
also i agree about statement colors for big pieces, but we bought a yellow smeg fridge instead of a white for my kitchen last minute and two years on i love it to pieces. my cabinets and kitchen floor tiles are white so it would be far too clinical together with a white fridge, but the yellow adds a wonderful pop of color and cheers me up so much especially in winter.
Just add more bits of yellow or warm colors to your room to balance it out (as in video). I change out my colors with each season. I did this because I realized I couldn't look at my wine colored rug (from winter) in the summer when it's 110 degrees outside. So I shifted to light blue & beige for summer. Then came green/yellow for spring and orange/brown for fall. These were mostly things I had but rotated for emphasis. This was helpful particularly when I inherited some decorations from my parents. There just wasn't enough room nor did it match. Also using pillow covers saves space instead of multiple pillows.
My mum always says yellow is a colour for the kitchen. If you're happy with it, then no interior designer can tell you otherwise. It's your home. You need to make it work for you, not others.
Great video! I’m proud of myself for innately knowing how to hang curtains 🤣. The first time I ever hung curtains I hung the rod way higher and wider than the window. I didn’t know why I did this other than I thought it looked better than the “normal” way. Someone saw my curtains and asked why I hung them so weird. I shrugged and said it looked better to me. I kept hanging my curtains like that and low and behold I’ve been doing it right all this time! I’m making a home design play list for when I start decorating my dream home!
1. Rugs that are too small 2. Shoving furniture against walls 3. Curtains hung wrong (2 videos by her) 4. Hanging "bad" art 5. Buying furniture with crazy patterns (go neutral) 6. Not layering lighting 7. Grout color is an afterthought
I wonder, for the crazy patterned furniture, I wonder if getting crazy patterned stuff to put on the furniture instead (like getting a patterned throw blanket, pillows, or cover for the couch for example) would be a better idea for someone who wants to jazz up the place without making an expensive commitment?
@@peggedyourdad9560 If you get a 'crazy' patterned sofa and get tired of the pattern, you can just get a cover for it. Buy what you like. And you suggestion of using a throw or a patterned cover is marvie.
@@gusmonster59 Marvie? I was just throwing out an idea as general advice not for anyone in particular. If someone really has their heart set on a crazy piece of furniture it’s not like I or anyone here can stop them lol.
I'm trying to arrange my home office. and i'm going to assume putting a desk up against the wall is ok because of all the cords that have to be plugged in right? haha
Yes! So agree with your suggestion to measure first buy later. We always go buy first and regret that it either too small or too large for many things around the house. Love your tips and really enjoyed the video.
9:22 - "white grout doesn't stay white" + 9:44 - the white grout made the pattern disappear = seems like the problem will eventually resolve itself when the grout gets discolored so the pattern shows through again.
Even very small towns have local artists. You can find affordable art and you'll have something unique, you will have supported a local talent, and one good piece can be a focal point to create a gallery wall with less expensive pieces. Having one good piece will elevate any other art. You can use a color from it to build a whole room around. I love supporting local artists and would like to hear decorators encouraging people to find them.
You can have your grout steam cleaned! My husband and I run a carpet cleaning company and we also clean tile and grout. The heat and water pressure from professional steam cleaning equipment restore grout to its original color. 😊
I got a carpet scrap from my grandmother after she got her room redone. It fits the living room perfectly and I'm pleased as punch. It's just grey with a textured geometric design. Carpet scraps can be much cheaper than rugs and you can buy a smaller rug that has more ornate design to layer on top if you like. 😉
Lots of good advice! One point of disagreement- read what Maria Killam says about a colorful sofa being far more timeless than the trendy neutral of the moment. Think about all the already-dated charcoal grey sofas out there! I'm loving my beautiful blue velvet sofa that will never scream "bought in the Tuscan brown/ grey/ black and white trend"!
That's a classic piece. Everyone seems to have the little black dress. The woman who chooses a simple dress in a style that flatters her, not the latest trend, will look great everytime she wears it. It may be black. It's more likely to be burgundy, midnight blue or even off white. Your sofa is that classic. The blue item in otherwise hot colours that calms everything. The statement in a neutral scheme. The start for layering blues/greens/purples for sophistication. Orange corduroy just doesn't have that flexibility.
I agree. People are definitely tired of that grey neutral look and it’s not always easy to redecorate around a large piece you don’t like be it neutral or not.
Agree, I absolutely adore my teal chaise sofa, that IS my art that I build my room around, and it looks fabulous, so, sorry, chicky! Enjoy that white sofa and how damned dirty it gets 😆
I must say that i love all of your tips! Also, the fact that you kept reiterating that it's just "your style/opinion" encourages people to stay true to their own vision. A good interior designer makes a good space look great. A great interior designer makes a good space look and feel like home. Good job 👏👏👏
Most of these tips are great, except for the couch. When my husband (then bf) first moved in together, he had a more modern style while I had a more vintage style (he has since come to like my style more and no longer likes modern, lol). To compensate, we bought a more modern looking couch and had a natural, burlap-like fabric, and I picked out colorful pillows to go with. I ended up hating the couch after only a year. I felt like it was hindering my creativity in decorating the space since it had such a monotone color. I am not a big fan of neutrals. I LOVE color. We now take more chances with the color and it is the best thing. We are saving up to buy a deep red velvet couch from Crate and Barrel and I couldn't be more excited. Neutrals are great for a lot of people, but for someone like me, they get boring fast. I need unique and wacky colors that also bring a sense of cohesiveness to a space. (Also floral print, I need floral print, lol) I'm tired of all these designers always suggesting neutrals for everything because neutrals really aren't for everyone. It's okay to take risks and think outside the box. You'll often be much happier that you did.
I have a red couch and then the matching chairs have a natural color fabric, theni have red and white pillows and neutral throw blankets. I have one pillow that is a peacock color and while it doesn't "match" it adds more personality! My bedroom on the other hand is very neutral. I think you're going to love your red couch! I thought I would regret going so bold but it's been almost 2 years and it is so fresh and inviting!
I bought burnt orange love seat and couch 20 years ago…everyone warned me against it. Loved it then…still love it now! And it’s quite the statement when people walk into the room…!
I scored a huge yellow 70s sofa about 8 years ago at a charity shop. The color came back in style two years ago. Since the color is so last year… I replaced it with a new loveseat. My color pallet is Van Gogh and I describe the new seat as being the color of haystack. I have nothing in the color of neutral beige and I love it that way.
Definitely a case of needing to know yourself. So interesting that monochrome drains you! For me, it's the opposite-color drains me, so I want everything to be clean and simple neutrals 😂
My previous “neutral” couch was a deep burgundy and my current one is a muted sagey green. I had the first one for over 20 years and hope to do the same this time. The colors were not particularly trendy and I never got tired of them. They were solids, though. Wild patterns would never have lasted as long!
It drives my husband crazy but I do have my curtains hanging above the floor - and I did it on purpose. I absolutely can not stand having the vacuum sucks up my curtains when cleaning and yes I know that I can hold the curtain up but that takes balance and grace of which I have none. 🙂 Also we have cats and their favorite game is hide behind curtains to kill what walks by. If the curtains are a little off of the floor I can see if I am about to be "attacked" and brace for it.
I think curtains 2 or 3 inches off the floor have almost the exact same look as curtains touching the floor. Curtains that the touch the floor get a whole lot dirtier than curtains held 2 inches off the floor. The lack of grime alone is worth it. BTW I love it when cats initiate a play session by attacking my ankles, but I also appreciate seeing when they're about to pounce.
We hung our curtains higher because the dog loved to pull at the bottom by lying down on it, always making us anxious that someday the whole thing might come down. (And we constantly had to wash the curtains and they got longer each and each time he laid down on it) Pets and curtains are just difficult
Thanks for the new video. I feel confused about suggestions to buy art from Walmart or Home Goods- there is SO much affordable art available from local sellers or on etsy. Even DIY abstract art can be so much more amazing than mass produced stuff. Why not support unique expression and small businesses/local artists?
@@PoshPennies It actually needs to be said, because so many other interior designers on youtube are telling people to buy cheap mass produced art and/or throw some house paint randomly on a cheap canvas from Michael's and stick it on their walls. The majority of viewers/commenters seem to think that original art is so hideously expensive that it can't even be considered by average people. It's tragic.
@@Blueberry-rx6hr sure! Saatchi art also has SO much beautiful and affordable art (especially if you buy artist prints instead of originals). Home Goods and Walmart aren't necessary, even on a budget.
Here is my hang up with the neutral sofa, they often are the current neutral of the moment. Example, I have a grey sofa...now you know which decade I bought it in, and it doesn't work with the current preference for warm neutrals. Better would have been getting a favorite color that was in line with my color scheme. Be wary of the current neutral, it too will look dated, and boring. Wound up slip covering my sofa.
I completely agree. I got my sofa 8 years ago and it’s full on rainbow, I have literally no regrets and I love it. There’s an idea of timeless classics, but it’s complete rubbish. So called timeless classics in the late 90s are the things everyone hates now. I’d rather have fun with colour and then, like you, use a slip cover later if my sofa is still good enough to keep. As it is though, I can’t see changing it anytime soon.
In 2003, I reupholstered a high quality sectional that I bought second hand in a salmon chenille fabric. Moved recently for the sixth time since then and it still works everywhere!
Love the focus on lighting in this video. I studied lighting design for a while and our lecturer talked about how stark overhead lighting can impair visibility in certain cases, as the stronger the light, the stronger the shadow. Spreading your lights around and using task and accent lighting is really helpful in lessening this effect. And lighting is one of those things that can make the biggest transformation in a room, even on a modest budget.
Viewing homes on the market with "Curtains hung wrong" drove me bonkers when we were house hunting a few years ago. I love Ikea for curtains b/c they are inexpensive & always start in 96" length that can be easily hemmed. Love these videos, Thank you!
Total pet peeve of mine, too! My mom had a small, home-based custom window treatment business when I was young and I used to hate being dragged to clients home for consultations and installations or to be forced to wander around fabric stores all day but now, I’m so happy I had that “training”. Or maybe ignorance is bliss and it’s better to think your skinny, low and closely hung grommet drapes are the bomb-diggity 😂
_(Middle aged man responding here...)_ Well, let's face it, I think this woman could walk around with no makeup (or hair) and she'd still be beautiful. That being said, and although I know nothing about makeup, it strikes me that her makeup colours and amounts are about perfect---in particular, because they're not too heavy.
I agree. I been watching this channel a couple of years. Posh is so funny. I laugh out loud. Classic humour. Posh your hair is so awesome in this video. I agree. Fantastic colour
The grout issue is so important! I agonized over which tile to choose for the kitchen but forgot to choose the grout. The tile was a minty green/bluish/white small mosaic so there a lot of grout to apply. The lady in the store recommended minty green 👌 🤔. I was pleased as it matched the tile. Fortunately, I visited the site when the workers were applying it and I was mortified! The whole wall was minty green! I could almost taste the toothpaste in my mouth.😲😳😵 I begged the guys to redo the grout..Grudgingly they agreed, replaced it with white and saved the kitchen! 🤪
*_"...Grudgingly, they agreed...."_* Y-e-e-e-s-s-s-s-s.......and WHY are tradesmen / contractors like that, anyway?? If you ask for something mid-stream that takes more work & time, they can simply charge you for the extra work & time! Simple! No immature, embarrassing whining necessary.
@@be5952 I worked as a craftsman and builder for 19 years. A grudging mood might stem from many factors. So often clients want something changed for free. They want you to spend a few days or weeks laboring *for free* to fix your mistake. The mistake was obvious when looking at the giant professional sized samples or digital mock up. But they never considered your advice in the first place, nor hired a designer. They couldn't really see it until the project was 90% finished. Or, worst case, the job looks great and the client is thrilled until some relative who doesn't even live there disapproves. If they wish to pay for the redo, that's better, but it still throws the company job schedule way off for the next client. I couldn't just hire more staff willy nilly because trustworthy competent skilled tradespeople are hard to find, even when paying top wages. Also, please consider that undoing grout is harder than grouting in the first place, especially if you are tasked with preserving the integrity of the tile. Also, it's very bad to disturb the mortar (what's holding the tile to the substrate) with excess water, or physical force, while it's going through a 3-4 week curing process. (But you can't wait 3 weeks to remove good grout because that is 100 times more difficult.) In fact, some undo/redo processes like this will void a warranty and insurance coverage. As a contractor who was 100% on my client's side, I don't want that potential headache for them in the future. Or maybe the workers were whining because they weren't up to the task. In that case I'd take it as a sign to let them go.
@@janinawaz4596 excellent explanation, thank you so much for going to the trouble. My builder kept checking with me on everything, I was also on site pretty much every day. He said that it's always easier to change something before you start it. He is fantastic 👏, I am currently waiting for him to return from a job in Paris to do a few extra things around my house, I would rather wait for someone I trust than rush to get it done with someone else.
World's best grout cleaner: 50/50 white vinegar and water. Spray on, let set a bit if grout really needs a brightening, wash off. works great. Smells... pickly, open the window.
It only smells like a pickle while it's wet though - once dry it smells wonderfully clean (unless it's one of those scented "cleaning' vinegars - those smell as bad as other cleaning supplies in my personal opinion).
I felt deeply the part about the sofa! You really drove the point with the most common trick, zooming in as the narration tone and words intensify. Love it!
These videos would have SUCH a major added value if the measurements (rugs in feet or inches) or bed sizes ("U.S. size names" such as king/queen) were localized by graphic elements (superimposed) showing centimeters etc. Especially since many of the photo examples shown are clearly Europe, or simply "not the U.S."
There's the US, and the rest of the world😁 Also, I think some things are typically American. Huge headboards (hate them), or photo gallery walls. I have never seen one in my country.
Awesome video but I will say as a dancer, that open empty space is VITAL. I use an ottoman coffee table that is easy to roll out of the way. AND I'm a renter with low ceilings, so my curtains are hung wrong bc we have those tension window rods and the tap in rod hooks that attach to the top of window molding! But it is a goal for our forever home
With rugs, choosing the right size is pretty easy by going with the popular recommendations - but only if it’s a square rug! If it’s round or polygonal shaped, it’s really difficult in my experience. When I bought mine, I had measured everything beforehand and used masking tape on the floor, but it still turned out to be too small. Luckily I was able to send it back (I really hope they didn’t just burn it) and get a bigger one. So my experience with round rugs has been: when in doubt, pick the bigger one! Or if the alternative is a square rug, just take the square rug’s length as the diameter.
usually returns will be resold when they're having a sale. That's how I found my rug. There was only one size to choose from and one colour and it was a steal. And it also happened to be a perfect fit for my living room ☺
I recently moved to my new apt and am so glad I went with a classic light grey couch. My curtains are hung with about 5” inches of space to the floor and given how I’ve no choice but to hang the bar where it is, the standard lengths are 84” or 96” where 96” would be too long and getting the length customized would be costly given how I’ve already spent a small fortune on a) curtains b) rods c) installing 😢 Love your tips! And the photo with the before and after grout mistake 😳 made my jaw drop by how it completely changed the pattern. Who would’ve thought?!
Just to say : I love your videos so much they taught me so much and helped my space look amazing and cosy. The informations are always super clear, easy to remember and when I see there's a new video of yours I click instantly 😊 thanks for the tips and great content!
I miss your videos! I recently found you and bingewatch😀😻 would you consider making a video about when you have to move from one rental apartment to another? Not buying your dreamhouse where everything is ”perfect” or as you wish but…when you HAVE TO move. How to make the new place cozy, what mistakes to avoid, etc. Thank you! 🥰
I have to disagree with you on the curtains issue. When I see curtains that drag on the floor, I frown because to me it seems as though the decorator settled for ill-fitting panels and just didn’t care that they drug on the floor. I am much older than you and it could be a generational thing, but that one feature seems very untidy. The other curtain tips were spot on, imho.
They used to call that "puddling" curtains. To say I loathe those might _not_ be overstatement. It looks exactly as you say, that they are ill-fitting. They look messy, tacky and must be unimaginably efficient dust and dirt catchers. This designer didn't get into it much in this video, but others have said draperies can look nice at several lengths. I do agree with her, though, that her specific example did look quite 'wrong'.
Glad I passed the decoration test! I do want to move my curtains up a bit but they’re not two low either. I just think it’ll make it look better with my new extra long curtains.
As I lay here in my bed looking at my sunset picture a friend painted (that I love), curtain rods that don’t go high enough and a too small rug for my Cali King Sized bed. 🤷🏽♀️ LOL!
🌸 a very common problem I do not know how to fix....in a situation with baseboard heaters underneath every window. A curtain cannot go to the ground for fire safety. But in your photos it’s “taboo” to have a 3/4 length curtain. (Which I totally agree with.) I’d rather have floor length. What to do?
Wow that last tip is so subtle yet I can see how it would really improve a space! We rent and usually white is used and it drives me insane how dingey it gets! I never thought about if they were to use another option. In my own home I'd definitely choose something else especially for floors.
"..until your sofa becomes nothing but the physical manifestation of constant regret and the reminder of all your bad decisions." This made me laugh so hard. I experience this phenomenon pretty much on a daily basis.
Thanks so much. Really appreciate. Note📝, please, that the heater being directly under the bedroom window makes it challenging to keep the curtains far enough in front.
Great videos! We cant stop watching! Part of what makes your videos so appealing is the lack of any absolute rules. You're quick to give options,. For instance, If you already have a small rug that you love, consider a larger neutral rug to go underneath. I also liked the breathing room around pieces of furniture. I must say though that the before and after sample photo was not really helpful. I always prefer a B&A that is shot in similar light and framed up equally. Real estate photographers have lots of tricks for making spaces feel their best, but these techniques are sort of cheaters when shooting before and after photos. Keep up the great work, we look forward to your next post!
I'd been watching while I cut out paper dolls for my kid, and looked up at the words, "over your pink sofa," at 6:46. Words were uttered aloud, in sorrow: "Oh," and then another word. Wow, my heart dropped so hard, imagining that in someone's house, my house....
I feel there are soooo many videos about the basic mistakes size rug, curtain length etc from design experts and design enthusiasts. I was expecting something more from you.
I cant believe you exactly described my feelings about my terracotta sofa. The color is too saturated, and it causes me an intense feeling of anxiety every day. I tried throwing some tapestries over it and that helps.
I just found your channel!!! I've binge watched several video's now and now "see" my home in a different light (no pun intended). So glad I stumbled onto your channel, thank you!!
Remember a home is a place to live. The spaces must work for all family members and all activities that take place there. I love the design ideas, but not one is practical for my family home.
I've lived several places where the livingroom furniture had to go against the wall. It's your place and if you like, it doesn't matter what other people think. Get sick of the rules. I have an olive green couch and chair, not new at all but kept clean.
Hi, i love all your tips on home decor. You mentioned about lights layering and i simply love the ideas. But what if there only limited power points available and more often its not exactly located on the wall that you would like lights to be. What you suggest without having to hack the walls and rewired?
I inherited a loveseat from my grandparents; it was an autumn festival pattern from the 80s. The base color was a brick red, and there were leaves in tones of gold, green and brown. I loved those couches...at my grandparents' house, and the feelings they brought up of a happy childhood visiting them in the summer and for holidays. However, living with it every day? No. The shape was outdated; it wasn't comfortable, it didn't fit my space, it reminded me of no more trips to grandma and I could not get it replaced fast enough.
My pet peeves: art hanging too high, curtain rods too low, furniture placed against the wall, hating each other. 😁 Another one is glass tables (fingerprints! sharp corners! cold to touch 🥶) Why?
Agree with everything except glass table tops. They aren't all square or sharp and one thing they do is reflect light, especially at night with a candle or two placed on top.
I personally adore the giant print of my Mona Lisa holding a cat. The 7-year-old daughter of a friend saw and screamed "MOM! DID YOU KNOW MONA LISA HAD A CAT??" It's a fond memory. I also have two (2) of the same print in different areas in my apartment. It's a classic print of "the threatened Swan" that currently resides in Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum. The muted colors of cream, dark blue and ocher come back in my interior, and besides; my mom's name translates to "little Swan" in Dutch. I'd say it's mass produced, bad art, like Mona with her cat, but it means a lot to me. I appreciate your tips, but ultimately it comes down to what YOU like in YOUR space. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.
In Europe it's quite uncommon to put furniture (eg. a sofa) in the middle of a room, except it's a dining table. And I actually think, it *is* weird.. I think it's not in human nature, to leave your back "unprotected" free in space.. Feng shui says that too. I would feel really uncomfortable to snuggle on a sofa, watching TV with no wall behind me.. 😅 But also we don't "socialize" much in our living rooms and therefor have two different "living rooms" as some americans have. Our living rooms *are* mainly our TV-rooms, and our *dining room* is for socializing mostly.. (Except for family or real close friends. They could also sit together on the sofa.) Sofas are more for the evening and private/informal/family.. Similar for beds in kids' rooms: I have barely seen any kids/teens beds in the middle of the room. That's such a waste of space! Why would you need space to stand up from a single bed on *both* sides?? I totally don't get that..
I come from Europe, and found out that the bedrooms in us are simply bigger. Also, in my old country, the room was a bedroom, a living room, a child's room lol. So the bed would become a divan and guests would sit on it.
This was a good video because sometimes when watching similar content from other creators, by the end of the video I feel like my personal style has been criticised lol.
We lived in a three story home for a while, and the dirt outside was making it's way to our floor via our kids. So I decided cover our first floor with a beautiful Spanish tile. I took a sample of the dirt to the tile store and matched the grout to it. Best decision I have ever made!! (We do take our shoes off, but they were very young and often forgot!)
Our kids influenced what we did with our sofa. We have an antique wooden sofa that had mustard yellow cushions that were falling apart. Tossed them and bought outdoor cushions that matched our color scheme! So easy to toss in the wash.
Real challenge is to decorate a small apartment (from 500 to 800sq.ft with restricted floor plans) to make it look spacious and aesthetically look appealing and give the soothing effect of hygge home...what would be your expert advice/suggestion?
Hello Creator. Appreciate your decorating tips in this video! Wow, I fell in love w/dining room chandelier in “lighting” portion of video, recognize it’s a long shot in the dark (no pun intended) but could/would you share on where a viewer could purchase?
I was wondering where my feeling of existential dread and the crippling thought of the inevitable Heat Death of the Universe was coming from… and now I realise it’s been because of my bright orange couch!!!
In all seriousness, I just found this channel recently and it’s amazing. Thank you for being awesome with your delivery! It’s refreshing and inspiring 🧡
uhm ... that sofa used to illustrate "over it" happens to be something that really makes me want a pink sofa with a crazy print, now. It's lovely! And, it would go with things I own. lol
I paid a lot of money for some quality curtains, only to discover after hanging them, the stiffness of the fabric makes them curve out and not hang straight down. This drives me crazy, weights don’t work and I don’t want tie backs. I wish someone had warned me about this type of fabric, it’s kind of brocade like, I’m so annoyed as they were not cheap.
My cousin is a painter and his mom once asked me which painting I liked the best, between a beach and a forrest landscape. I said I really liked both, but to pick one, it would depend on my house, and the atmosphere of it. She said she understood. When my father heard that, he said with a despising tone that it's not how art works. But... yeah. I'm glad you agree with me, and considering his tastes, I'll just keep thinking what I'm thinking.
I hate grout😂. My house, i bought new and i think day 2 it looked dirty. I was constantly trying to find things to make it look clean and it never did. Next time i will go for the no grout look.
Our first living room purchase was a blue and white striped fur couch and chair. Ah, the 70s!!! LOL We loved that furniture. Alas, things only last so long and after 15 yrs we had to move on to something else.
Or... You don't care and you just live with what you have and you're happy because it's what makes you happy and you don't care what other people think lol

Yellow is such a good colour!
My mum always says yellow is a colour for the kitchen. If you're happy with it, then no interior designer can tell you otherwise. It's your home. You need to make it work for you, not others.
What’s a smeg fridge?!
I originally found you because I was trying to make a cozy home, but subscribed because your low key humor is hilarious. Never change 😂
1. Rugs that are too small
2. Shoving furniture against walls
3. Curtains hung wrong (2 videos by her)
4. Hanging "bad" art
5. Buying furniture with crazy patterns (go neutral)
6. Not layering lighting
7. Grout color is an afterthought
Ty
😂love that dirt! I chose brown tile to hide the dirt when my child was young!
😂
Even very small towns have local artists. You can find affordable art and you'll have something unique, you will have supported a local talent, and one good piece can be a focal point to create a gallery wall with less expensive pieces. Having one good piece will elevate any other art. You can use a color from it to build a whole room around. I love supporting local artists and would like to hear decorators encouraging people to find them.
I really enjoy your personality, you are funny, not too serious, polite and down to earth, great mix :)
I agree with you Karolina, I would like to add that you are so thoughtful and very pretty. (no I'm not your Mum). LOL
You can have your grout steam cleaned! My husband and I run a carpet cleaning company and we also clean tile and grout. The heat and water pressure from professional steam cleaning equipment restore grout to its original color. 😊
i almost comment on that... :D
I'll get that done thank you so much
I like your reminder about the need for intention. That advice is worth gold!
Of course your sofa will go out of style! But if rather have something I like during that time!
Ò
(Also floral print, I need floral print, lol)
I'm tired of all these designers always suggesting neutrals for everything because neutrals really aren't for everyone.
🤣🤣🤣😍
Nothing worse than that sneaky ankle swipe 😹
I think curtains 2 or 3 inches off the floor have almost the exact same look as curtains touching the floor. Curtains that the touch the floor get a whole lot dirtier than curtains held 2 inches off the floor. The lack of grime alone is worth it. BTW I love it when cats initiate a play session by attacking my ankles, but I also appreciate seeing when they're about to pounce.
We hung our curtains higher because the dog loved to pull at the bottom by lying down on it, always making us anxious that someday the whole thing might come down. (And we constantly had to wash the curtains and they got longer each and each time he laid down on it)
Pets and curtains are just difficult
😂😂😂
Thanks for the new video. I feel confused about suggestions to buy art from Walmart or Home Goods- there is SO much affordable art available from local sellers or on etsy. Even DIY abstract art can be so much more amazing than mass produced stuff. Why not support unique expression and small businesses/local artists?
Goes without saying
Can get art at arts & craft shows, art galleries, amateur shows as art schools, senior centers or make something yourself. Don’t know until you try!
Thank you for commenting. I didn’t even think of Etsy!
I have a grey couch from 5 years ago, now I want a beige one 😭😂 I was thinking of putting a cover also
I agree, have always told my children buy what colours and furniture you like rather than what is “in”. Everything always comes back again…lol
I have a vintage burnt orange leather couch that I bought when gray was the in color, but now it's in even though it's over 30 years old lol 🤣

That being said, and although I know nothing about makeup, it strikes me that her makeup colours and amounts are about perfect---in particular, because they're not too heavy.

*_"...Grudgingly, they agreed...."_*
Y-e-e-e-s-s-s-s-s.......and WHY are tradesmen / contractors like that, anyway??
That last photo of the grout ruining the tile was such a shame! What a terrible way to have to learn that lesson. Thanks for the heads up!
Surely the tiler should have pointed this out before?!
@Olivia Langeveldt not all handypeople are created equally. Or, the owner could have disregarded their advice.. who knows!
World's best grout cleaner: 50/50 white vinegar and water. Spray on, let set a bit if grout really needs a brightening, wash off. works great. Smells... pickly, open the window.
they make super vinegar that doesn't have that pickle smell!
Especially since many of the photo examples shown are clearly Europe, or simply "not the U.S."
agreed. very annoying
There's the US, and the rest of the world😁 Also, I think some things are typically American. Huge headboards (hate them), or photo gallery walls. I have never seen one in my country.

This is hilarious to watch in an RV. All the mistakes are all ready made for you. And there's nothing you can do about it.

Awesome video but I will say as a dancer, that open empty space is VITAL. I use an ottoman coffee table that is easy to roll out of the way.

My curtains are hung with about 5” inches of space to the floor and given how I’ve no choice but to hang the bar where it is, the standard lengths are 84” or 96” where 96” would be too long and getting the length customized would be costly given how I’ve already spent a small fortune on a) curtains b) rods c) installing 😢
Love your tips! And the photo with the before and after grout mistake 😳 made my jaw drop by how it completely changed the pattern. Who would’ve thought?!

I absolutely adore the pictures in black and white with one color saturated, checks all my boxes really.
Thank you for a very information and interesting presentation! Great style
I always find myself wishing your videos didn't end :) Gracias por esto.
As I lay here in my bed looking at my sunset picture a friend painted (that I love), curtain rods that don’t go high enough and a too small rug for my Cali King Sized bed. 🤷🏽♀️ LOL!

Great ideas and tips! Thank you. The tumbleweed was very funny.
I just have to say: I looove this style on you!
ART: choose art and then add everything else.
What to do?
IKEA has some white ( lighter) curtains that are mostly black out
Wow that last tip is so subtle yet I can see how it would really improve a space!
Yes, please do not suggest holding the curtain bottom away from the baseboard register.
"The physical reminder of constant regret..." I absolutely have one of those. I feel seen.
Oh me too. I felt so relieved when I got rid of that item.
It d i d remind me of my mistake and it drove me nuts.
I'd been watching while I cut out paper dolls for my kid, and looked up at the words, "over your pink sofa," at 6:46. Words were uttered aloud, in sorrow: "Oh," and then another word. Wow, my heart dropped so hard, imagining that in someone's house, my house....

I just found your channel!!! I've binge watched several video's now and now "see" my home in a different light (no pun intended). So glad I stumbled onto your channel, thank you!!
The specific measurements for the rugs are so helpful!
I loved that section about rugs. 👍🏻
OMG I LOVE the pink sofa rant hilarious!! 🤣
I can’t imagine having so little true life issues that things like this are my pet peeves. Ignorance is bliss that’s for sure.

Hi, I am new to your channel, but already like it a lot! Greetings from Germany
My pet peeve is pictures/paintings that are to "high!". But I suffer in silence who am I to direct my hostess in her own space!
Me too! But I’m getting,…….no I’m at the age, I say something!! diplomatically, of course! 😂

😅
But also we don't "socialize" much in our living rooms and therefor have two different "living rooms" as some americans have.
Our living rooms *are* mainly our TV-rooms, and our *dining room* is for socializing mostly..
(Except for family or real close friends. They could also sit together on the sofa.)
Sofas are more for the evening and private/informal/family..
Similar for beds in kids' rooms: I have barely seen any kids/teens beds in the middle of the room. That's such a waste of space!
Why would you need space to stand up from a single bed on *both* sides??
I totally don't get that..
A bed against the wall is a pain. Trying to put the sheets on when you can't walk on both sides of the bed.
I come from Europe, and found out that the bedrooms in us are simply bigger. Also, in my old country, the room was a bedroom, a living room, a child's room lol. So the bed would become a divan and guests would sit on it.
Found it just in time before we start decorating our living room. Just what I need!
You're so informative but yet so entertaining. Subscribed.
Big box stores put indoor/outdoor rugs less 50% at the end of the season. Great information.
This was interesting! Especially the carpet one! What would you recommend, when the bed is in the corner, so against two walls instead of only one?
Why not have your bed the center of the room?

We lived in a three story home for a while, and the dirt outside was making it's way to our floor via our kids. So I decided cover our first floor with a beautiful Spanish tile. I took a sample of the dirt to the tile store and matched the grout to it. Best decision I have ever made!! (We do take our shoes off, but they were very young and often forgot!)
So cute
Our kids influenced what we did with our sofa. We have an antique wooden sofa that had mustard yellow cushions that were falling apart. Tossed them and bought outdoor cushions that matched our color scheme! So easy to toss in the wash.

uhm ... that sofa used to illustrate "over it" happens to be something that really makes me want a pink sofa with a crazy print, now. It's lovely! And, it would go with things I own. lol
Physical manifestation of constant regret 😂
I paid a lot of money for some quality curtains, only to discover after hanging them, the stiffness of the fabric makes them curve out and not hang straight down. This drives me crazy, weights don’t work and I don’t want tie backs. I wish someone had warned me about this type of fabric, it’s kind of brocade like, I’m so annoyed as they were not cheap.
I enjoyed this video and found it very interesting how many of the suggestions line up with the principles of feng shui.
I love your videos. Some of your "art" mistakes I actually love but will be more conscious on how I use them. lol. Thank YOU!
You have such soft features, I like you much much better in beiges and neutrals :) Black is a bit too harsh on you as it is on me too
I'm sure my art is "bad" but I don't care, I buy good frames and borders on it, but I love my classic movie posters. 😁
the grout tip is really good and valuable.
Thank you for sharing this !
We are moving soon and this helps so much !
Or... You don't care and you just live with what you have and you're happy because it's what makes you happy and you don't care what other people think lol
