I am a 78 yr old retired engineer just started playing this January. Have been paying at 5 or 6 courts, 3 gyms, and 1 tennis club in my area (Davenport iowa). Started ball experimenting with an assortment pack of 12 pickleballs from 6 different vendors. Since moving to a bigger gym now experimenting with best colors. No preference was found with the 6 vendors, but the new gym looks like they have opted for the Penn 26 because of the hot lava color. Send the neon red Wilson and I will donate to new gym.

I tried the Wilson true 32 Pro for the first time this week and was extremely impressed! I thought the bounces were truer and I thought the ball was very durable throughout our three hours of play.

Great review. Would like more information about the durability of the Wilson.
I recently did an experiment with the Dura 40, Franklin, SLK and Core balls. I pulled 6 new balls of each brand (except 4 for the Dura 40) from my ball supply. I weighed each ball in hundredths of a gram. I believe the results speak to the manufacturing quality of the balls.
    SLK - high 26.46g - low 26.09g - range 0.37g - average 26.28g
    Franklin - high 26.29g - low 25.93g - range 0.36g - average 26.11g
    Dura 40 - high 26.60g - low 24.55g - range 2.05g!? - average 25.82g
    Core - high 26.11g - low 25.94g (3 of 6 weighed exactly 25.94) - range 0.17g - average 25.98g
Wilson - Awaiting samples from Pickleball Mafia
Clearly the Core is the winner in this comparison and the Dura the big loser. If you round the Duras to the nearest gram, they don’t meet the weight specs.
Most people I play with use the Franklin X-40. The biggest complaint we all have is a significant number of the Franklins wobble badly when new.
That has led me to buy and introduce Core balls to the group. They are rounder when new and they outlast the Franklins.
    Keep the reviews coming.

Quickly picking (pickling?) up the game. I had wondered why there were inconsistencies in hole placement, because the give and flex of the ball would be different dependent of the surface point of the ball impacting the court. You explained it wonderfully. Thanks!

Thanks for the informational presentation. Here in Surprise AZ, home of the USAPA, ball types are a point of contention. Most experienced players and almost all the pros prefer the Dura 40. The older players tend to prefer the Franklin which is increasingly used in the numerous local tournaments. There are a half dozen clubs in our area with over 1000 members, some have over 1500 members. l would love to try the Wilson.

First off, great video, I learned so much about pickleball balls and explained some of the things I have been encountering. Will be sharing with all my pickle ball buddies. Destroy some of their myths around them :). I am definitely going to go out and get some of the Wilson balls to try them out, they sound great. But one question, what about indoor pickleballs? With the temps where I live, have to go indoors for the winter and not sure what the right and best ball to use would be, Any help would be appreciated.

I pull out the Wilson True 32 when the weather gets cold because it didn't crack last year when it was 38 degrees. The Dura seems to crack below 75 and the Franklin X-40 cracks below 60. I've been frustrated with the wobble from both of those balls and it seems to be getting worse lately. Great review!!

Great review! It makes me want to go out a try one of the new Wilson Balls.
But there's one thing that you forgot to mention in your review of the Franklin X-40 balls. While they play nicely when you get a good ball, we're noticing more and more, that their quality control is going down. When the balls first came out, the consistency of the ball was very good. But over the past year, we've been noticing that more and more of the balls are out-of-round (and very wobbly) right out of the box (or tube). I would say that our group (going through probably 200 Franklin X-40s over the course of the summer) have found that nearly 25-30% of brand new balls are being thrown away because that they are so out-of-round that they're unplayable. But when you get a good one . . .
All that being said, for my particular style of play, I prefer the Dura. But our group seems to be 60/40, Franklin over Dura. But they're both easy (and enjoyable) to play with.
Thanks again for your well thought out and in-depth review.

Hmmm ... I'm skeptical on the Wilson balls but I'll try them. Recently I've been buying the TOP ball from pickleball central. Plays just like a dura but at a cheaper price. I'd be surprised if it isn't made in the same factory as the Dura. Lastly, given I live in FL, how a ball holds up in the heat (90+) is important. Dura/TOP are the only balls I've found that don't get mushy after a few games down here. X40 is fine when it's new fresh out of the box but after about 4-5 games it's no good. Just watch the US Open (Naples FL) and see how pros even are challenged to put a X40 away with a kill shot because it just has no bounce in the heat.
