  • I'm sharing my top 5 secrets/tips to master your pickleball spin serve in 2022! This is a serve I invented and made a video on which you can find a link to below. It'll be interesting to see how pros like Zane Navratil and Ben Johns adapt to the newest rule changes that made the chainsaw serve illegal. I think we will see a lot of pros working on their one-handed spin serves like mine and Morgan Evans.

      Most tennis players have a 'special' serve - this serve is no different. Use it all the time and people will start to track it - it's not for constant use. It's like a pitcher throwing a knuckleball. Keep it - it's fun!

      Great video Shea. I could probably write a book on this one question haha but I'll try to keep it simple. I flip-flop. I think any skill you can develop to give you an advantage over your opponent should be allowed, but then I think In the short game of pickleball it's an unfair advantage and takes the fun out of the game. So I lean towards banning both the chainsaw and the one-handed spin serve. We want to keep the audience interested in the game itself and continue to grow the sport right? However, like tennis and especially ping pong, you can see some crazy serves! So idfk

    I was really surprised how well this worked on the court. There’s a bit of a learning curve trying to stay consistent, but after a week, I was able to get 10 in a row where I wanted them. It was super polarizing in rec play. Some people were impressed and asked for a demonstration, while others weren’t so impressed and kicked me off the beginner courts. I’m under 3.0 and a little overweight. The challenge courts in my area are 3.5, but after a tall opponent stepped the wrong way and caught the skip right between the legs, he became quite heated. Thanks for sharing this technique it has helped to win more points. That, in turn, has taught me the empowerment of actually visualizing and taking the win.

    Hey Shea...Tommy here from Hiawassee......I had the pleasure of looking very silly by your serve. I could not hit the dam thing. You had me laughing soooo hard at myself. I always tell new players how humbling, but fun, the sport of Pickelball can be. I started playing because it rekindled my competitive juices. After realizing my old bad knee and my old bad lower back wouldn't let me play Basketball anymore. I decided to give Pickleball a try. I was hooked the first time I played. It opened a fun new chapter in my old and not so athletic world. It's been fun watching you grow in this sport and now you adding your amazing serve just makes the sport that much sweeter. You are a true Pro in my world......Peace, Love, & Pickleball to you my friend !!!

    Firstly, thank you Shea for putting the initial video up! As soon as I heard rumors of the chainsaw getting nuked, I went out and about looking for a good one-handed spin serve; where it's helped me get a lot of either: Free Points, or Free Set Ups for 3rd to 5th Shot Finishers in Singles Play.
    As for the serve getting banned, I think they'll ban the use of Bandaids and Athletic Tape, etc sometime during the year of 2022 (if not already being released in the 2022 handbook coming soon), or when 2023 rolls around; primarily because if the use of those is to grip the ball better for more RPM, it can be seen as a liability to the overall game. They MAY allow use of Bandaids during the game if you blister up and the finger starts bleeding, but that's a rare scenario if it happens at all.
    The serve itself, I don't think will get banned. Primarily because you won't be able to hide it, and the tells of the serve are pretty easy to nail down even at a lower level once people get the gist of it. I had a Tournament this past Friday, my partner and I were going against a lower end 4.0 Team (we're approx a Mid 4.0 Mixed Doubles Team together), and after receiving a couple of those serves, the Female Player (Mixed Doubles Tourney) managed to get a better feel for the direction of the spin than who I'm assuming would be her husband. However, getting a feel for the Tells of the Spin does not equate to knowing how hard it will kick to which side. I believe that's what kinda helped my partner and I smooth over that match in specific.
    In a recent Singles Tournament where I got 2nd Place, one person I played against during the ladder season before the final tournament between the Top 8 players had already beaten me twice. Once due to me still getting used to how he played, the 2nd time due to just recently picking up the OHSS (Acronym for One-Handed Spin Serve) but not having enough kick to do damage. Third time around, we played and I managed to beat him 15-9 in the Consolation Bracket after getting the serve almost downpat (now I started practicing that one little change in the starting position for the hand/fingers for the serve, I get so more RPM now compared to a few weeks ago lol). Most of those points came from the serve setting up a weak return to send in a plethora of 3rd to 5th Shot Finishers. So yeah, I love it. He adapted very well to serves afterwards, but not enough to give too much trouble :sweat_smile:

      Variation in serves provides a competitive advantage. You are already putting mental pressure on your opponent by having them trying to guess what the serve is going to do rather than thinking about exactly where they are going to place the return and getting to the NVZ.

    The serve is great and adds a dimension of skill to the game. Some people are concerned that it makes the serve a weapon and in competitive play against similar level players, I think its fine. When I play with lower level players I never use the serve so it is fun for them, just like I don’t crush them with power or body shots. If I am playing against fellow competitive players or in a tourney it is very appropriate to use. If you have the skill and ability to make the shot use it. Just like dinking and drop shot is a skill or over powering an opponent’s reaction time. Good players can handle the serve and will adjust and learn to read the spins. I do agree that the visibility of the hand should be preserved and no foreign substance should enhance the spin. In recreational play use common sense and ethics to guide play, in competitive play let evolution occur and new exciting skills develop.

    I have so much fun with the chainsaw serve right now and I am sure this one will be the same once I can master it. If this serve becomes as well adapted as the chainsaw serve did and is as hard to return next year I don't see why it would not also be banned the following year. While I love using these kind of serves I am in the "They should be banned" camp. I think pickleball is a better game when it remains "less winners off of serves". Really good video though. I love how you included the bandaid trick and switching paddle hands.

      I am not happy to see so many not wanting innovation in the sport. Is Morgan Evans the best player because of his serve? No. Does it help him a lot? Yes. It is only one aspect of the game and people need to learn to adjust and adapt and what will be exciting is watching these serves get returned. Banning it sounds silly to me.

  • @allanisakai
    @allanisakai 2 роки тому +1

    Fantastic video! Seems to me that allowing deliberate spin on the ball prior to the service contact with the paddle will make the game of pickleball a battle of serves. A good spin server will be able to win games without having to master other skills. Is that what we want? The serve should not be a weapon. Otherwise, the team that loses the rally should get the serve.
    Also, I like the fact that you have read the whole rule change not just the part about the non-paddle hand. The rule does not say that the release cannot be "hidden" like in table tennis, instead, it states that the release must be visible. The definition of visible is "able to be perceived or noticed easily". The definition of perceived is "to understand". Therefore, because the release of the ball by spinning the fingers makes it difficult to perceive the release, one could call for a replay every time a spin server is executed. There could be a lot of arguments regarding this latter issue as "visible" is subjective and ambiguous.
    Your thoughts?

    • @sheaunderwood
      @sheaunderwood  2 роки тому +4

      I have a feeling there will be a lot of people complaining about not being able to see the spin early on next year. For what it is worth, I used this serve against some pros recently and they really didn't have much trouble with it. As of right now the spin serve is a weapon but it's not as over-powered in higher levels as people think.

For pickleballs with seams, does it matter where the seam is when you grip the ball? For example, if you grip it with the seam in a vertical orientation, will it get a different bounce action than a horizontal orientation, or is it completely irrelevant?

    The draft rule book published today says “No foreign substances, material, apparatus, or additional body parts can be applied to the hand or aid the hand that releases the pickleball.” This would mean applying a bandaid might not be legal. It seems like these rules are going to continue to try to close little loop holes, when they should simply move to an open palm serve and be done with it. A very literal reading of this would indicate that I’m not allowed to put a Band-Aid on my non-paddle hand, even if I have a wound there.

The server shall use only one hand to perform the serve. No foreign substances, material, apparatus, or additional body parts can be applied to the hand or aid the hand that releases the pickleball. The server’s release of the ball must be visible to the referee and the receiver. In matches without a referee, the server’s release of the ball must be visible to the receiver. First, thank you for the tutorials Shea! And second- when I play more competitive people, we play competitively. If you’re playing less experienced people, we don’t use spin serves. Dominating an opponent with serves isn’t fun for anyone. I get that people are competitive, and you want to “practice” how you play. But if simply getting rid of the spin makes it easier for my opponent to return the serve and keep the game flowing, I’ll keep the serve basic. 🤷🏽‍♀️

    As an Aussie who has played a lot of cricket, I find it amusing that this is the way that Americans are now taking notice!! What you are doing is call "off spin" or "finger spin", but you can also do "leg spin" or "wrist spin". Cricket bowlers who bowl leg spin get more spin and more variation on the ball. A leg spin bowler can spin the ball in both direction by altering their wrist position. The issue with what you are doing with your body is that it clearly telegraphs which direction the ball is going to spin. But perfecting both off spin and leg spin, means you can spin the ball both ways from the same stance.

    I would also like to add to the discussion how the ball spin prior to the service contact with the paddle might affect the growth of pickleball. If this technique becomes the norm, it will be very difficult for beginners to return the serve. The serve would discourage beginners from take up the game of pickleball. Why would they put themselves through such frustration and embarrassment. Pickleball is popular and growing because it is designed so that anyone can quickly learn and enjoy the game. This serve would make it difficult not only for beginners but also those who currently play and are not as naturally talented as the professionals. If this serve becomes the norm and most people adopt the spin technique, an alternate pickleball organization can be established separate from US Pickleball organization that follows the lead of table tennis when it comes to the serve. This alternate organization would probably overtake the current US Pickleball organization. Another path would be for IFP to separate from US Pickleball and disallow the spin before the beginning of the serve.
    The future of pickleball might be at stake with this issue.

      But Alan… beginners should be playing with other beginners who don’t know these spin serves. By the time one is learning these they are at minimum intermediate to advanced. It makes it fun if you are playing with people of the same skill set or better as they don't know what to expect and your serve is one of the few things that can keep them guessing. If they outlawed the spin serve, they would also have to do the same with the groundstrokes which would make the game very boring.

Furthermore, it can totally take two opponents who are virtually equal in ability and becaus4e one uses finger flicks, turn the game into a lopsided game. I have been playing pickleball recently, and the pickleball serving rule is a complete mess as the sport is still in its infancy. In terms of serving, your service will likely be illegal because you are manipulating the structural integrity of the ball before the serve. Pickleball should and will be adopting the rule that table tennis players follow. How do you serve the ball in ping pong? Hold the ball in your open palm behind the end of the table. Toss at least 6” straight up and strike it on the way down.
