🎉🎉 much appreciated and great video! Here are a few notes for those interested. Batch three is coming up, and here are the planned changes: New Caps - pipette is going away. New binder for Goons Grime, Dystopian Brown, Sector Rust, and Decay of Death for a more beginner friendly formulation. The idea behind the current binder on Villainy Ink Enamels was to be able to have the colors mentioned above to be able to dry anywhere from glossy to matte. The learning on this is steep, however, so I will make the change to accommodate. As a final note, I will say that Villainy Ink, particularly Goons Grime, were not intended to be Ak Replacement and essentially works differently. Buuuuut... this color range has blown up far beyond what I expected, and all sorts of folks are now trying out enamel for the first time or looking to replace AK with Villainy Ink due to their much lower levels of toxicty 😅. So we hit a far broader audience than expected. So batch 3 should be exactly what people are looking for: much easier to handle, lowest toxicity in the enamel market, FUN! 😊😊 Thanks again! 🎉
It´s like buying chilli spice bottles, the cooler the lable the better the spice so i heard... i buy my paints with the same principles, better get a set of those Village inks asap!
I'm glad I got 2 of the starter boxes then if its changing, I love it the way it is. That should last a looooong time as im diluting a lot as i use them. After watching the deep voice guy on grimdark comp testing on trench crusade, they have become my favourite paints ❤
At like 12 pounds a bottle, this is a hard pass. I expect the product to be damn perfect if it costs that much, but this almost feels like the first draft of what these will be with the next iteration.
Great review. Was looking at buying the villainy inks and it’s good to hear an honest opinion. Il continue to watch more vids on the product before buying
Used these for a while. There great in a batch pinch but there best when they mix together. 100% needs an agitator. I use it mainly when I'm banging out armies.
Wow. After all the videos claiming Villainy Ink is the best thing since Nuln Oil this was really informative. In the US, single bottle of Villainy is the same as AK Interactive.
Use eye shadow applicators rather than cotton buds, you don't get bits stringing all over the model and they're way more accurate if you use the sharp end and you could easily clean those pipettes with some spirit
@@mrsmiley92 there's really not much price difference here in the uk between cotton buds and eyeshadow applicators. You also don't get left with stringing all over the model
Great video. Really like the honesty and also the great reaction in the comments. More and better tools have already driven painting quality (and importantly for me - ease) forward. I left this pass alone deliberately to see what the reality was and am glad I did, but reckon the next iteration will join my painting supplies 👍
I got myself dystopian brown and the crimson one for skin. I really like them. I can put it all over and then just rub off in areas instead of re painting over it with standard washes. The price is pretty steep, though compared to other brands.
Awesome advice! I’m super happy I watched this. I am totally sold on the crimson. As you said it’s the most unique of the washes since that color really doesn’t exist anywhere else. I’m disappointed to see the massive inflated price of Villainy Inks so I do not think I’ll get the whole set. I will also watch some other videos on them as you suggested. Thanks again!
I'm a massive fan of the grim dark style. Oils and enamels are liberating and I hardly used streak and grime. Dark wash is my go to despite the chalkiness. I'm painting Blissarb Archers so I'm fine tuning "Clean Dark" and villainy inks ichor of the damned is amazing for that balance. The Feral Painter does some amazing work with them and show cases different techniques. Yeah it's expensive but so much more flexible than AK washes. I'll be ditching my previous washes for Villainy inks. You did miss out on some important info with what makes them superior over enamel washes. I do think that the comparison is chalk and cheese due the formula of Villiany Inks.
Those paint jobs are amazing. I think grim dark/weathered is your jam. You are very skilled in this area. Thanks for the review. I'm glad im not the only one finding these inks a bit temperamental, I thought i was just being an enamel noob.
These look awesome 👌 I really need to use my inks far more often. I think I'm just nervous that I'll paint a miniature, then ruin it with the inks. But I do have tue Taro tester plates. Ps. That flesh is amazing 👏
Great review Patrick, and an honest one. I'm still interested in trying Villainy Inks but I'll wait for Batch Three [mentioned below by their creator]. Your finished minis looked fabulous. Thank you )O(
Thanks, as a mediocre painter, I think that these are more a tool for someone who really needs that specific effect. Streaking grime looks like a better choice
Great video & the thought of spending £12 for that blood ink is quite tempting 😅 (Not fussed on the rest AK grime has always served me well) Love the podcast/chat videos but this video really shows what else you can offer etc Really lovely stuff all round 👏
Nice review, thanks! Out of curiosity, how do these compare with using diluted artist oil paints like w&n oils? For the price of 1 bottle of villany you could make up to 250mls of wash from w&n paint + sansodor medium! How are these dedicated ones better?
I'm not entirely sure they would be "better" really, just different. Solely on price oils are a no-brainer. Huge range of colours in oils too and results/process would be similar do you think?
@@thepaintingphase I think that the process is probably similar. Just getting into oils myself so don't have much experience yet. Guess they are a bit of a DIY solution and maybe not everyone likes experimenting on their plastic.
Dirty down rust tends to whiten out and lose vibrancy when exposed to sunlight. I had a fantastic piece of terrain with richness of colors with DDR, but after 2 years, it's now dark, muted, and the bright yellows and oranges have become pale pink and white. So beware.
Thats too much work. Enamels work better with Armor and model planes where there are more open spaces. Trying to dig out enamel with a q-tip from these detailed models is for the birds.

I love the fact that yours dries matte to glossy, please don't change... teach us master!
@FauxHammer working on it!! That's why I'm taking my time with batch 3. I am trying not to compromise too much on my vision.

Quite possibly, i did struggle and didn't want to lie. Others have done well however so I will ask for some tips.

Q-tips are way cheaper
Good point ☝️ I'll check them out. I also got a big pack of makeup sponges but forgot to try them

yeah i have these, i had to clean half of the pippettes out with spirit - it's a quick way of doing it and you only need to do it once
Good tip. I just spent an hour unclogging all the tips. The Goons Grime appears to be complete sludge and unusuable.

Happy to help, thanks for watching 🤠
Great video. I like the look of these inks as they feel more like a wash to me which is what I'd prefer having used a lot of oil washes.
Was vaguely interested until I saw the price. Nope! Way too expensive for something which basically amounts to a fancily packaged oil wash.
Enamel not oil. Still expensive for what it is.
Agreed. Nearly bought one but with postage it was nearly £20. Too much I think
I love them, and use them in concurrence with AK Interactive, Ammo from Mig ,traditional oils and acrylics.
Awesome, glad you like them!

I'm not sure I'd say very skilled. Happy to be proven wrong about my thoughts etc. but I definitely struggled a bit!
At 10:20, is ghillie dew on the right? It looks so vibrant!!
It is, it's a lovely colour. Really enjoying speedpaint 2.0 at the moment
I just got some Villiany Inks and needing to shake the pot first was my big takeaway from my first attempt at using them.
These definitely require a hell of a lot more shaking than demonstrated here, but it's well worth the result.
It blows my mind that people will spend hundreds on minis and then hesitate on a great tool like a $20 vortex mixer
Vortex Mixer worth every penny which I spent on it

Good idea to recommend a respirator to punters, if they’re airbrushing enamels. Super toxic if atomised.

Very cool
“Spinny Results Time” love it 😂
Everyone loves spinny results time 🫠
I love Steaks, not so keen on grime though
thats why I came to comment. Steaking grime has me torn.
oooooooooops, thanks.
Funnily enough it was Villany Inks which made me just stop buying pre made and just do oil washes and making my own.
Music????🙏

Apply a matte varnish to it and should prevent that.
@@deanwilliams433 Will try, thanks!
At least one perk is that you can literally goon all over your models
How long did you let the enamels sit before wiping them off with white spirits?
Streaking grime, less than 5 minutes. The first Villainy ink probably over an hour.
Agrax earthshade works just fine.
Streaking grime and agrax are almost the same price now. Crazy.
@thepaintingphase Agreed! I've only needed one bottle for my whole army, though. In my opinion, it gives DG the best look.
Almost 3 times the price and issues with the bottle, sod that. Don't need to watch much further :D
I don't like name of villainy "inks".
They should have chosen something else as to not confuse it with regular inks.
