Just to mention, gotta bunch of t's and some polos for work. No tags, as well , they're really comfy and soft! - can be really important for autistics
The question so many of us have been asking for so long... can't wait to dive into this one!!
I've developed quite a... jaded view of corporations as I've grown up, and I'd be lying if GW's blatant falsehoods regarding Finecast's release when I was barely a teenager weren't part of the foundation of my radicalisation.
"You think a company would do that? Just go on the internet and tell lies?" - 13-year-old George.
That's good! We should all maintain a *very* critical eye on corporations.
Absolutely fascinating, could listen to Tom talk about the industrial processes all day. You can really feel Peachy’s frustration on behalf of the customers too
We know why the Painting Phase exists - truly Finecast, lovely people. Although is it terribly cynical of me that my immediate reflexive response to "you never knew where the eye of Sauron would fall next" was "well, it's a safe bet it wouldn't fall on anyone in higher management who might have got it into that bloated state in the first place"? XD
I remember when they made the switch from Lead to White Metal (pewter) in the early 90s, the message at the time was "Its crisper, Its safer, but its a bit more expensive" and that was...fine.
I think if they'd have just kept the cost the same or maybe even dropped the price by £1 or 50p, the good will might have been better, in the end it just felt like bad profiteering.
With the plastic pricing discussion, I always want to keep on my mind that the 3rd ed plastic guardsmen came out at £15 for a box of 20 or 30 guard, and before the new guardsmen came out, it was £30 for half of the bodies, even though it was the exact same model in the box for the last 20+ years
im only 30 minutes in and talking about the old Blister packs has got me nostalgic. Going in my local GW at the time and seeing half of each wall covered in these and picking thorugh for specific models like Plasma Cannons or Lascannons.
Ooh yeah I miss those days 😍
The day I picked my first miniature was a special moment and it was from a clampack.
A chaos terminator with reaper autocannon - you always remember your first love! ❤️
I buy them off eBay unopened all the time! Legit bought so many for bargains over the years! Gota have the blister wall
As a 16 year old going in to town with a fiver, choosing which blister to buy. Good times
As someone who ran a "chapter approved" shop in the mid 90s that carried massive amounts of blister, there was nothing worse than showing up in the morning and seeing metal parts all over the floor when the glue had let loose over night. Those were the crazy days.
As an Eldar player of 20 years this is an issue sadly still very close to my heart
As someone who worked in the retail on release of finecast and being customer facing this makes so much more sense in hindsight.
Haha I had forgotten the black book! Still got mine! Loved the look on the bright side of life in the first few pages!
This is the backstory to my time at GW. I got hired as part of the pre-Finecast buildup.
Thanks, guys.
I remember the White Dwarf where they announced Finecast to the world, officially.
'It is as good as the miniture straight from the sculptor themself!'
Oh... Oh no. No, don't say that.
Bollocks.
😂😂😂
The most interesting thing to me with this episode is that GW just needs to be upfront and honest about their intentions for big changes
At the time when "Fine"cast was being touted as the new next big thing from GW, I was dubious about it as I had (and still do) an all metal Grey Knight army and didn't want my beloved models to go away. Anyway, running up to it's release I remember reading somewhere in a White Dwarf that GW actually said that "Fine"cast was "cheaper to make": they then promptly put the prices up and were charging more for the same models. That put me off right there. And then came the issues people were having: holes everywhere, miscasts, missing limbs etc etc. Awful quality control. But the thing which really stuck in my mind, was that GW used the classic Emperor's Champion model in their advertising pitch: a model widely regarded as one of their best, and rightfully so. This particular one however, had a miscast front and centre on it's chest. Pretty much says it all, really. I refuse to this day to have any "fine"crap models in my collection.
I do like that, you’ve caved into demands and allowed the dog in.
I remember looking up the price of bloodknights (after experiencing the awful fines cast with mandrakes) and deciding I was fed up with fine cast lack of quality and high prices and went and bought a 3D printer instead. For about £15 I found files online that looked amazing and printed much better quality models AND bought some bases. I'm glad they're slowly replacing all these awful resin kits. It's actually down to gw that I now have a 3D printer and have managed to print loads of stuff for a fraction of the price
I found Tom talking about blister packs being boring really interesting. Because I had just read Talking Miniatures and in one of the interviews they talk about what a revolution blister packs were when Bryan Ansell introduced them and how a lot of retailers were at first hesitant to stock them. Before GW introduced blister packs, miniatures were sold in little plastic bags with carboard stapled to them and usually weren`t displayed, but stocked in drawers. Retailers were anxious that hanging up blister packs might make it easier for people to steal them.
At the time having all miniatures displayed in full sight in professional packaging with nice artwork printed on the cardboard was a really new thing and led to increased sales.
That's because Tom is unable to think about it from a customer perspective, and that's why he fails as a product designer. He's just another company man.
@@WardenOfTerra To be fair he's also approaching that from a time period where blister packs were no longer new or innovative, so they found another iteration of it...seems like he was responsible for quite a few products that work from a customer perspective though? Not sure what your gripe with him is
@@WardenOfTerra Something being better than what came before doesn't mean it cannot ever be improved on. Blisterpacks were better than being stuck in a drawer behind the counter, but are not nearly as good as the newer packs with art cards. As a customer, it's infinitely easier to find a newer pack I'm looking for in a wall of product, and it's way more aesthetically appealing to have colors and art than the old wall of grey.
@@JoeHardacreI provide reasons behind company decisions rather than ranting about them. I also try to conduct myself in professional manner whilst doing so which means in the large part removing my personal opinions from the discussion. Some people conflate that with making excuses and being still a company man. Some people liked the products I worked on and some didn’t. That’s their opinion too.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV I've really enjoyed the two podcasts you've been involved with and it's nice to hear from someone who has a very different insight into the way things are run - you definitely need to get working a new paint bottle though!
Another one of those interesting "Behind-the-scenes-at-GW" episodes, those are always awesome❤
Peachy's chat with the pup at 1:53:07 is just so sweet. Fab podcast folks, one of my faves yet.
My favourite guest of all. Such a lovely bloke and so many nuggets of wisdom.
I love my mold line scraper from GW and I don't care who knows it! ❤
Its a legit tool for leveling edges, and a great gift for younger modellers. I started scraping mold lines when i was 10 with a stanley knife and still have the scar decades later 😅
Same here. I love that stupid thing. I call it stupid because it is so simple i guess hehe.
why do people hate this so much hahahah?
It's the absolute best.
Scalpel for mold lines initially, then a pass over with the mold line remover and a quick run over with Tamiya Extra Thin if it's a tricky line.
Absolutely foolproof!
Fantastic for shoulders too
I started Eldar during this finecast shift. And I got a pack a fire dragons, with flashing 3 layers thick, i needed a scissor to cut through it. And then scrap off the flashing that went through every helm…
I got banshees, and i went through 7 or so boxes for 10 good ones, and took about 3-4 months of work. Luckily, Customer service was excellent, so i only paid for 2 boxes.
Bloody hell, I had that Buck Rogers fighter and I never realised...
My favourite Toy Safety story was a lot of X-wing toys (action fleet/microgalaxy squadrons) have the bottom row of engines smaller than the top so that the X wing can't be left upright and someone impale themselves on the nose.
If you're going to talk about dangerous pointy tips, you've gotta mention the goblin spears from the 4th ed starter box. They were basically hypodermic needles
snotling pump wagon ... that thing caused me more pain than any other model trying to glue them together as a 15 year old lad before i knew about things like ca glue activators, pinning or even using greenstuff to hold parts in place.
Great to hear from Tom again, a nice repeat guest with some very interesting bits covered. Having worked in retail at an independant at the time of Finecast we hated them, had to look over every blister we ordered before sending them out.
On the subject of the scraper tool, I generally still prefer a knife but it does come in handy. One use I did work out recently is that it can be quite good when assembling push fit models. I have an older one but it’s just about the perfect size to ream out the holes for most of the pegs. I know you can just cut them off if you want. But if you enlarge the hole ever so slightly, you get the benefit of the pegs guiding things into place without the excessive force that can break thinner components. Then just dab a bit of thin glue on the joints.
I'm probably one of the few people that actually benefitted from finecast 😆
I wanted to make a squad of miniature battlesuits so bought three finecast shadowsun models. There were no big flaws in the three I got and the soft resin made them much easier for me to chop and change the posing, weapons etc.
I also had some finecast XV-15s that had no issues, guess I just got very lucky!!
do you still have them? from what i hear a LOT of finecast resin starts to liquify over the years
That bloody bar on my Buck rogers ship! Us men of a certain age are all slapping out heads going "of course thats why it was there doh!" It had just never occured to me.
Learn so much from Tom’s episodes! Very pleased to see Bella again too 🩷
Another great show. Great to see behind the curtain.
Cheers gents. Look forward to these shows every week.
Loved the first interview with Tom, can’t wait to watch this!
Have really enjoyed both of Tom’s episodes, have found them so insightful!
About 30 mins in so far but it's another wonderful and in depth explanation of BTS. As a consumer it's really helpful to understand where some of these choices come from, even it just allows us to be wiser as customer
Another great conversation with Tom, fascinating dive into the decision-making behind the scenes
Having now fully watched this I love the mentions of obscure things like the Unifroms & Heraldry books. I own the Skaven one and even used it in a video recently where I map out my planned Old World Skaven project. I also have that old Citadel Spray Gun, had plans to turn it into a flame weapon for LARPing as it was designed to look like a hand flamer. Sadly it sits in a Drop Pod box not getting used, loved using it for base coating.
I wish I could have interjected on some of the discussions, I had a run of bad castings of Deathmaster Snichk, one had a massive "v" where his arm was meant to attach, another had a bubble cutting up him cloak, in the end I gave up on him. Still have a Finecast Queek in my bits box, but I own multiple metal ones meaning he's doomed never to get used. I've got those Jezzails I mentioned built and they're on my desk getting Speed Painted alongside 20 Clanrats and a Ratling Gun.
I think I'll be watching more of these podcast videos while painting, some interesting discussions and memories brought up.
Amazing insight again, Tom is such a fantastic guest for that! Very refreshing without the bias being bolted on either. Can state his own opinion as well as keeping just down to earth facts. Very refreshing takes. Great stuff gents!! :)
Wonderful guest! Great show, guys!
Another fantastic interview. It was great to see Tom on again. Really enjoy hearing his insight.
What was the amazing clippers that Pat mentioned? I couldn't catch it.
God Hand clippers and they are great - Geoff
Great video! Its fun trying to figure out who's breathing into the mic at any given time
The thing that always got me about GW finecast is how it scared so many hobbyists away from the word "resin". Finecast frustrated me because not all resin material and casting strategies are the same, and a lot of makers put out resin that's really nice. And requires no more clean-up than plastic.
☝️💯☝️ yep fully concur with this statement
This hurts hearing they were doing plastic Mirkwood warriors in plastic, I have atm 70 finecast Mirkwood warriors and all the fine cast heroes for that army and whilst now they look great cleaned up and painted the whole process of getting them to that point was horrible! The Mirkwood rangers and Palace guard which were plastic were a joy to build and paint but like Peachy said you don’t need many of the guard 8 max is needed in most armies. If I could’ve got any model in the range updated for plastic it would’ve been the Mirkwood warriors
Such a knowledgeable man. Business minded. A key person at Games
Workshop. He did a lot there, all of it for a remuneration package of 12k a year and no car and 7 days half pay holiday. 😂
“The code is more what you'd call 'guidelines' than actual rules.” - Barbossa, Pirates of the Caribbean 😂
Again, the best podcast of the whole series. Could listen to Tom talk for hours and hours
This is brilliant: I love finding out how (and why!) things are made.
I still remember in that White Dwarf that it got its announcement in. One of the things said about the swap to finecast was that it would be cheaper to buy. Has a good laugh about it then
Said it last time will say it again. I work in new product design and this video should remind me a lot of work... And yet, absolutely fascinating. Patiently waiting for our next hit of Tom. Cheers boys!
Another fantastic show guys! Loved seeing Tom again.
Awesome episode as always but can we take a minute to appreciate the amazing thumbnails and video titles lately? Spot on!
Hey Geoff! Little bit of Buck Rogers trivia for ya here. The Thunderfighter was not actually made for Buck Rogers. Legendary artist Frank McQuarrie actually designed it to be the Viper in the original Battlestar Galactica. Which is why it has two great big fangs on the front of it. Or why it was called the Viper. Whether the name or the design came first is unclear. Anyway, Greg Larson, producer on both shows, re-used a lot of BSG assets when they made Buck Rogers, including the Thunderfighter.
1:51:00 - YES! Shout out for Canadian Games Day shirt designer! I got a Powder Monkey one, but the better one was the red Dead Space Marines one, showing dice rolls and 2nd Edition starter space marines ♥
Absolutely love hearing about the “business” aspect of GW. Come from a family involved in business so find it all fascinating! Not very much into many hobby podcasts but this format melds my love of Warhammer and business
Fantastic conversation, as ever! Tom is a brilliant guest, so many interesting insights
Yes Tom, will be happily watching this tomorrow as I work
I love working with Finecast. its so smooth and cuts like butter.
so far i haven't seen any warping on finished models, but im keeping an eye on it.
this has been another fantastic learning experience. the last time Tom was on I learnt to appreciate why things weren't for me. this time his insights have been eye opening, I appreciate Tom being devils advocate so we can see both sides of the coin
Yeah he’s very good at getting the arguments for and against across 👍
Another fantastic episode! I'm learning a lot about Games Workshop from The Painting Phase :D
another great vid guys! can't wait to see another with Tom!
Both of Tom’s episodes have been fantastically interesting! Really enjoyed hearing more from him.
Loving the Winter beard Patrick!
You guys finally twisted my arm into getting into the AM stuff... I'm amped to be a real geek now ❤
Hahaha
I got like a dozen+ shirts a few months ago and they're real nice. A bit thin, but still good quality, it seems. And comfy. Longer ones too, if that's something your body type appreciates.
Before COVID I was at GenCon and loitering near the Forge World stand. A customer was trying to exchange a vehicle that was warped. The workers could not find a replacement that was not warped. The manager of the stand was telling the customer that the warpage was caused by taking the part out of the mold way too soon (the parts have to cool for so long or they warp). So, this problem was caused by hurrying the process. I suspect this was ordered by higher ups who just wanted to fulfill sales.
And all the layoffs because of overspending was caused by the higher ups. Did any of them lose their jobs?
FW resin is not the same thing as finecast.
@@rogaldorn8519 why bring up finecast? the comment is specifically talking about forgeworld resin and incompetent greedy management causing quality issues in the products.
moreover finecast is also a resin so its about 90% the same process in manufacturing than forgeworld resin except its an inferior product. warpage in resin is usually a result of tension in the material due to uneven or too fast cooling similarly to metal that was quenched wrong after the forging process.
Very insightful again. Love these podcasts, great to have on when am painting. Pat you lost weight? All the stress moving to the studio? Would love a studio tour.
Absolutely awesome insight again!!
The “All Pain, No Gain” T-shirt is perfect for the fine cast discussion.
These videos are sooooooo entertaining, geeks sat around talking about the hobby….I love it!!!
Another great chat! The phrase "(it's just a) sausage vehicle" needs to be a thing. Inquisitor! I'd almost forgotten that existed. Would love to hear a ramble about old and forgotten specialist games like Space Fleet, the card token based Horus Heresy (and Armageddon?) Advanced Space Crusade...
The main issue with GW cases is they are designed for space marines or guard with no spikey bits or banners.
Two Thin Paints dropper bottles leak when you shake them, so you have to take the lid off and put your finger over the end when shaking.
I heard that thing about the two magnets before, the trick is to swallow a third magnet and you're all good. Never swallow an even number of magnets!
Such simple advice! 🤣
you just have to enter a high energy induction field that will heat the magnets up so hot that they lose their magnetic propertys and you are good. a little burning sensation is a sign that its working.
Speaking of vacuum chambers and resin, Zorpazorp's video about the making of Weta Workshop's Space Marine statue is a must watch!
I'll second that, his stuff is always great to watch and his weta videos are brilliant - the time that has gone into making those Marines is insane
Love the business side of the conversation. Great podcast gents.
The toy safety & risk assessment bit!! More people need to hear this!!
Interesting as always. I think there's a ground loop or something else causing a buzz on the audio of one of the mics, but it's not enough to stop me listening. 🙂
Yeah I’ve just observed that too, we shall investigate what’s causing that…..might be my bald head 😂 - peachy
Gabriel Angelos requires your relics to be placed in his secure "vaults." Great return of a favorite guest!
Thanks of the episode, guys!
For what it's worth, the few resin kits I've gotten over the past couple of years from GW (not Forge World) are definitely a different resin than original Finecast. It's a bit more rigid and dense and less "fluffy", so they definitely updated something to improve it. It's still not my favourite material, but it isn't like working with bubbly, stale marshmallow anymore!
That’s at least a positive that it’s improved a bit…..but still not ideal, cheers Brian 😍👍
So awesome. Great show again
Another great, insightful, honest and level-headed episode - I love the older style GW Cases, I have 50 of them for all my armies and they stack so well
I purchased one fine cast and once I realised that I had utterly wasted $AUD 40 I stopped dead on buying GW figures. I only purchased Rules since then. The next GW figure I received was my Warhammer+ promotional.
Great video, thanks guys.
Three things I always try to add to the conversation about cost:
- that box of minis has to pay for everyone involved in the production of that mini, including all the support staff - from the designer, to the painter, to the cleaners, lore writers, rules writers, accountants, HR, packers etc. that mini pays for thousands of people's jobs.
- the pricing seems to be related to the volume they expect to sell - marines are cheaper because they sell loads of 'em, so the overall cost of that mini is divided over more boxes. That one random cool unit that's not great in game and is only going to sell 10 copies has to carry a lot of production weight on its hands. And GW has a huge range with a lot of niche choices
- inflation is a thing, you can't compare how much your minis cost in the 90s to now. A set of guitar strings was £4 in 1994 when I started playing, they're £12 now. Things get more expensive.
brilliant....again! thanks Tom and the TPP
Amazing guest and great balanced insights!
Tom is *such* a fascinating guest - it's really interesting hearing him unpack the whys as it were....
I always enjoy these podcasts. I have listened to this one while studying the new Necromunda rulebook. I learned I cannot study the Necromunda rulebook while listening to podcasts.
With that Soulshackle box set in the background and your affinity fit conversions, will we see a Judge Dredd Arbites conversion video in the future?
The bolt round case is the green metal case. It was a gamers edition from 5-6th ed. It came with a bunch of bright green templates and a mini rule book. Still have mine.
Of course. I’d totally forgotten about it (Tom)
Another brilliantly revealing video - thanks chaps, and Tom! Roll on Tom vid mkiii :).
...and I semi-podcast these things. It took me until 01:40:00 to realise: DOG!!
I'm a Skaven player and our range still has all of the different materials. My finecast Deathmaster was shocking due to all the bubble holes. However, one of my metal gutter runners has a massive slip line in a position where I can't file it down with a normal file. Bring on the rumored refresh! Although I also feel guilty about the micro-plastics I'm creating by sanding my plastic minis...
Peter Dennis, who you mention in the 40th minute, is also doing an increasingly large variety of paper soldiers. Impressively good ones, too. I rarely use anything else these days - cheap, relaxing to build, and fantastic art.
I loved the three Heraldry books, and still have them. I was hoping for more, including one for Imperial Guard, but it never happened - though I've noticed the same basic concept was used in the 5th edition "black book" to show off different regiments, aspect warriors, etc.
I learned to paint from the old Mike McVey book and from the original Rogue Trader book. I only painted one finecast model (the Changeling) and it was the last GW product I ever bought.
I feel like I've gotten 1/2 of an MBA just from listening to Tom. This is great!
Great episode!
As a viewer who works in metal casting i found the concept fascinating
Another fascinating episode guys. I gotta say, the new room looks really inviting. I want to lay down for a chat. Hobby therapy session please
Yes. I loved Tom previous episode!!!
I really like when these get really businessy and technical. I always assume this is whats going on in the background, but its the detail!
What a great speaker Tom is
Oh wow, at 58:35 mark - those Cities of Death scenery kits. I have never stabbed myself so much on any plastic kit (and I collect Dark Eldar!) as those bloody things! The spikes on those tops were mental and they kept their sharpness even if you tried to dull them down.
Love seeing Tom return! I vividly remember the Finecast change - I was working at a games store at the time and we had those White Dwarfs laying around, including the one that introduced it. Even then I could tell those poor designers were held at a gunpoint and told to just smile as they print absolute nonsense in their name. My first ever Finecast models were a box of Howling Banshees I got for myself on a birthday - one of them was lacking a whole half of her bum that I needed to sculpt on, to say nothing about all the bubbles!
For me, this was a great two hours of watching this cute dog getting everywhere :) such cutie!
Love Tom's new podcast, not sure about the other three hangers on. :P
😂😂😂
Another excellent listen well painting
