Stengah - Meshuggah cover

- In May 2015, I gave my first masterclass at ACM in Guildford. At the end of the session, I performed an interpretation of 'Stengah' by Meshuggah.
They're a band I've listened to and have great respect for, and they have taught me a lot about seamlessly marrying odd time signatures and groove. Tomas Haake is one of my top influences - I hope I've done this some justice. I only had a day to rehearse so there are a few blips here and there.
Thank you to ACM for having me and Kuba Mleczko (www.mirroredrecords.com) for helping on the day and providing this audio mix.
"HuRR duRr ThE pEoPle iN thE auDiENcE haVe No iDea HoW cOmplEx ThiS is!!!! xxdd im sOo fUnny"
They know full well how complex this is - they're ACM students in an OPTIONAL MASTERCLASS
So why the 3 peolpes who moves their head are not in time ?
There's some subjectivity involved. If they're not into a particular genre (metal) and
especially if they've never heard the song before, they can be somewhat dismissive.
Dat ghost notes! I am thinking of calling ghostbusters
sounded good. lots of groove
the ghost note rolls totally ruined the groove
+THERAMMSTEINFAN490 how....?
cause they were not groovy. haha way too straight forward and static and cycled for a Haake groove. He mainly used them in direct conjunction with either kicks or cymbals.. which kind of seemed stale to me.
on a side-note.. very much like what haake has been doing on Violent Sleep of Reason..
Crowd is most impressive part of this for being able to keep their heads still.
I’d be starting a mosh in the front.
I'd be headbanging so hard if I was in that audience! Your ghost notes are supernatural!!!
@Shigekishi I agree. I might not be FULL ON banging if im trying to understand a drum piece, but id at least be moving my head a little bit. (maybe that's just how me and you learn? by moving our heads around like idiots? lol)
@@laneweatherbee2232 you can avoid moving the head like an idiot if you just move it with the hats
It’s the drummer from TesseracT. Of course his ghost notes are god like ha. Dude is unreal.
I feel like the people there watching had no idea how much skill that actually took.
+Viihta True that dude. I've been at plenty of shows where even though I love metal and love to head bang, I was there to watch the drummer and was pretty motionless as I stared in awe.
+john marsh You might have something there.
+Nunuv yorbiznes go listen to 'Trojans' by The Algorithm... thats a skillful piece
bazz boyy Meh
no horns from anyone at the end ... nooooo
I'm no drummer, but it feels so nice watching a cover on Meshuggah!
Tomas Haake is a polyrhythmic beast of a drummer. Some of the most creative and difficult drumming I have ever heard has come from Tomas Haake.
This seems to be a fairly common setup for a clinic/masterclass type performance. Can't understand why the audience (all musicians, if not drummers) are not placed in a circle behind or to the side of the kit, so that they can actually see what Jay Postones is doing... How are you going to learn anything if all you can see is his left foot? Thankfully, Jay posted this video!
Wait is this the drummer of Tesseract??
yup
Aaaaaah... that explains a lot haha
Yoo yesssss
Haven't read any comments but I bet there's someone who said something the the effect of "I bet these people had no idea how good this was"
I think they were trying to pay attention to his technique. He said it was a master class so I assume they're all aspiring drummers paying close attention
Man...he crushed it on that final verse. Saw them live when they toured with Meshuggah a few years ago, and he didn’t disappoint. Very underrated player.
Stengah is a great choice for a cover. Allows you to really groove on it with your style.
There are so many subtle syncopations on the snare in the song, it's unreal. So bad ass.
They call 'em ghosts
Ghost notes aren't the same as syncopations. Ghost notes *can be* (and often are) syncopated, but syncopated notes don't have to be ghost notes.
@@hititwithit that's fine, but he said a subtle syncopation on the snare. Those are textbook ghost notes. Let's not overthink things
Those ghosts and that half time smashing on the cymbals - so groove - much heavy! :D
This is my favourite Meshuggah song alongside Spasm and Future Breed Machine
+Jaxcompot Goddamn can you imagine how hard he'd stomp the hi hat during the Spasm drum solo?
Sadly, though, Meshuggah never seem to play Spasm live, I'd literally pee my pants if they play it if I am in the audience.
@@hakkenarsk Haha trust me I've looked for live videos of Spasm to see how Haake approaches it. No luck though! Troy Wright's cover is the next best thing for me. I've seen Meshuggah once and Future Breed Machine was absolutely fantastic, the breakdown with the perfectly synced strobe lighting was so intense!
What do yo think about straws pulled at random? I tend to listen to theesd two in a row to meditade.
Luke Barker Yeah, I love that Troy picked out that one. So flippin’ groovy. Seen them six or seven times, one of the best live acts I’d say.
The crowd is really feeling it.
We head bang for them.
I didn't think anyone could groove this more than Haake. Well done!
I never knew a kick drum could sound so good
Whoever tuned the snare needs a raise. FUCK YEAH DUDE
I'll take that.
One day for rehearsal? Respect!
I love Meshuggah and it was interesting to watch the drum part. Very impressive!
update:
Wow, I've only now realized that you are a Tesseract drummer! Love your band and listen to it very often!
Keep doing great music dude!
i re-watch this video so many times. i think its my favourite video on all of youtube. also, i can't wait for TesseracT's new album! i know you'll lay down some sick beats like always ;) cheers!
AND THE CROWD GOES mild.... ;)
Great job!
So funky! I love Stengah, and you really put your own spin on it while staying true to the song. Awesome job!
0:05 One guy try to do kind of a "air drumming" of the song but he can't xdd
He realized the snare was displaced and gave up haha
Ricardo Perez hahahaha
Lol that guy is genuinely me, i literally only know the first groove before I get the timing confused haha
@@ben2nd how did it feel to attend Jay’s class?
@@NintendoCaprisunish honestly it was one of the most enlightening classes I have ever been to, especially as a drummer who looks up to people like Thomas Haake and Jay. He really went in to his history before he was a professional musician, working in a building not far from the ACM, and getting the call up from Tesseract.
He then spent a good amount of time explaining how he writes his parts and how he writes with the band. It was amazing, he played Nocturne, a prog rock song that I think was part of a side project, and of course Stengah haha. I even got to have a go on his kit :)
It’s almost got a samba feel to it... love it
This is probably one of the most deceivingly hard songs there is. The timing is so weird.
Isn't that pretty true of all Haake's work? "Metal Mick Fleetwood", as one UA-camr calls him, seems to have a propensity for weird timing... it gets bloody difficult to headbang when he's playing in three different time signatures at once!
Its in 4/4. The hardest things are the polymeters
@@gSWG3R well, yeah, there's usually a line of 4/4 running through Haake's drumming, but that's never all that's going on. No such thing as a simple 4/4 beat with him!
yeah cookie is right, straight 4/4 with off beat grooves and a 3/4 measure or two to fuck you up
Cookedaburra d The snare is just off of the cymbal, which really fucks me up, and the kick is placed oddly ass well
You’re a monster!!!!! You killed it, seriously fantastic job!!!!!
Gotta love when people do covers like this in front of an audience because you know they only had 1 go at it. Sure enough this dude knocked it out of the park.
remember jay is a self taught drummer
Such a big groove. the ghost notes are killing me.
What crowd goes to a drum masterclass and can sit this still during a full song. Not a single person so much as taps a foot in this crowd yet here I sit air drumming behind my desk unable to stop myself.
Just wanted to say I read your comment and was blown away by how attentive you are. I am very impressed with you.
Wow you are so good 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 true drummer 👍
I this post is old but, great playthrough. I was watching the crowd, seeing if anyone else were bobbing heads. Huge Shuggah fan, was skimming through vids of covers.
you can feel the fuckin 4/4 pulse
I just hitted the like button after hearing the first bass drum beat, what an awesome good sounding drummer you are Jay
Excellent cover, very fun to watch. The tempo on this one makes it sound deceivingly easy.
I wish I could be a drummer just to cover Meshuggah songs
That Bassdrum sound is incredible :D Good job Jay nice to watch :)
Sublime! More Meshuggah, sir!
Jay! Please do a cover of New Millennium Cyanide Christ
+Sam Smith Ha yes I'dl like to see that too. One of my favs
On guitar, the only reason why I can play along to New millenium cyanide christ is because of pure muscle memory.
I know the longer tremolo in the opening riff ends on a downpick, that's it. Usually when you play along to meshuggah it's like thinking of two things at once and it's fun as hell but this one still fucks with me so I need to turn that off and just duguduguduguduuun
Next level drumming. Solid stuff amazing skill and timing
Sat in that room hundreds of times... still doesn't leave you like, bet that was a wicked session.
Fun fact: the sheer will and mental fortitude of this crowd to not headbang at any moment could easily just think of a snap and make Thanos die twice
Postone’s a boss……those ghost notes are sooooo crispy! Exactly how I want my snare to sound!
i think I couldn't stay sit so longer with that song ahahah
Perfect interpretation, well done :)
Tomas Haake : this is jay, and I use it as a crash
Sick!
real sick man, real sick. well done (from 1 meshuggah head drummer to the other)
I covered this to successfully get into ACM guilford because of this video
So good!
One of the most amazing/interesting/musical drum parts.
420 blaze it
CrapPartyHard 2 days from now
if you wanna test yourself how technical your musics skills is cover meshuggah
He definitely won this talent show.
Excellent work. I'd be shaking people up and throwing chairs!
These people clearly have no fucking clue how amazing what they are witnessing is
BEST MUSIC TO DANCE!
awesome cover Jay! u put ur own style in this one, doesnt suit Meshuggah song but it's a variety to hear this. very hard to nail that left foot constant hi-hat but knowing ur work in Tesseract, it's fairly easy for you. would love to see u do more covers like this. maybe one from Porcupine Tree?
It's pretty much in the vein of the 2002 original with all the ghost notes and the small tasty fills tho
Yes!! Been waiting for this. Thank you kind Sir.
These kids have no idea who they are watching.. Legit tesseract drummer, fucking legend.
I think one guy in the audience was like nodding his head, but i'm not sure...
Close enough, we’ll register it as a “lit crowd”
I like the St. Anger snare
Loving the subtle buzz work.
Mad props brother and i agree the audience doesn't have a clue
I always wanted to learn this song. Thanks for the great video!
I can sort of play this track too, but compared to this it's pretty "dumbed down", as this is an epic cover, and is mighty skillful!!
I wish we'd have had masterclasses like this when I was going to ACM@UCO.
only when you sit down and try to transcribe this shit do you truly realize how fucking insane the rhythm is. you'rea a beast m8!
I'm sure Thomas would appreciate this :)
always loved that main beat, so poppin'!
Sounds very good, you nailed it. I think it's technical and it grooves.
one of my favourite drum covers. ty sir.
So groovy! Swing those paws!
This was epic, thanks for sharing! You are very good!
Absolutely sick, well done, 99.5/100
this is what i called the next level of music
Tomas Haake is beyond belief.....great video man
what hardware did you use?
How the fuck anyone can listen to Stengah without bobbing their head to the sicks grooves is beyond me...
Super clean and groovy !
My brain is melting.
I could rehearse this song for a lifetime and still fuck it up
The crowd just doesn't get how good Meshuggah really are!
+Baal Tebah They are probably just really focusing on what he's doing. That's what I've done in all the clinics I've gone to.
not a crowd, its a class.
GOT DAT GROOVE
I'm going here next year!!
I fucking love that short little intro he does
This is some hotness right here
You really groved that beat up awesome!
that snare sound is gonna make me act up
Jay's playing is haunted by ghost notes
UHHHHUUUUUUU!!!!
MESHUGGAHH RULES!!
GReat Job, Man!!
\m/!
Good work. People don't really get how tricky this song is. Verses sound crazy because crash sounds like it's on the off beats, but it's always on the downbeat for the verses.
You're on point man!
awesome .. great work
That was badass dude
Amazing plying man god bless stay metal
So much ghost notes , doesn't even need phantom power !
Excellent 👌👌👌
"Any questions, no, ok good"
great playthrough!
Amazing
