• Meshuggah - Stengah (D...
Stengah was the very first song I heard from the band Meshuggah and I was instantly hooked by their sound. This is heavy but super groovy song and is probably one of Meshuggah's best examples of polyrhythmic repeated patterns and riff's under a big slow half time groove. Some of these grooves like the one at 4:28 feel like an eternity between snares, with the underlining kick and china pattern.
Because I have known this song for so long and already played through the main grooves of Stengah a couple of years ago in my 'Nothing Album Drum Cover Medley' (link below), when I came back to learning the song in it's entirety I was more comfortable playing around with the patterns and adding more of my own flavour by stabbing some of the grooves on the china instead of playing on the toms as Tomas Haake did for example like during the outro at 5:00 . All in all I love this song and the way the song makes me feel. Hope you all enjoy!

As a diehard Meshuggah fan, I would like to make a statement.
Troy was created a new alternate ending for 'Stengah..
With a little 'Electric Red' twist.
The result of drinking coffee with a lot of 'Shuggah.
And I should add, that that cue bar prior to the main loose section at 0:43 was just what the song needed in my opinion, much better than the original one with constant rhythm.
Attention to detail is insanely good. There are so many clever nuances. I really enjoyed this! No such thing as too many Chinas haha
Damn! This was 3 years ago!
Shiiiiit.
Damn! This was 2 years ago!
5
damn, you commented this 3 years ago!
Damn this was 3 years ago!
2:30-2:40 that is one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard
What is that, quintuplets on the china?
The ghost notes always gets me...
Yes, you can always, pour some 'shuggah on me.
Tyler Cox Goteem!
The drum transcript is free you just have to sign up to my site! Cheers
Troy, why did you decid at 0:50-1:04 to hit the cymbals after the actual guitar note? It's then being hit on the quarter note, but that doesn't sound right. I'm curious.
amjan It's just the slide in of the guitar that you are actually hearing. All fine! ;-)
That was a sick fill at 3:30
Every time I see his video I get a felling I should really hit the gym... then the video ends and I am back to old me xD
I heard someone say that when a metronome wants to keep time it listens to Thomas Haake. It shows with this song. For a song that's not relatively as fast as like future breed machine or the demon's name is surveillance or even bleed, it sure is complex.
the new album slays fucking amazing "clockworks" is unbeliveable
Drums only version: Meshuggah - Stengah (Drums Only Version) by Troy Wright
One of the most technical songs to ever be released for drummers, mad respect for this.
You are literally the only UA-cam drum cover-er I like.
These are the moments when i get truly relaxed, listening to Meshuggah :)
Facts
Like I'm super relax in the song straws pulled at random
That was the most fucking intense drum cover I've seen in my entire life.
While I really enjoyed your other covers like Happy and such, it's really nice to see you keep on going with Metal and more importantly Meshuggah :]
Great cover as always
Youre so accurate! Simply astonishing!
There's no telling how many times I've seen this video. I love your spin on this song, it's really awesome. Great cover.
Great and sounds great too. Glad you're making videos again.
best cover ever...original, dynamic, love it!
Spectacular!!
1:44 is one of my favorite Meshuggah drum riffs of all time!
That was so sick! definitely the best cover of Stengah, the embellishments were well done!
Long live Troy Wright! Amazing cover man!
Yes finally back to metal! This one was fucking great. Your technique is just inspiring
You're the man Troy.
Absolutely beautiful performance !
As a diehard meshuggah fan (as written below), i just want to say this is a veeery fucking brilliant cover. You nailed the song, you nailed the ghost notes, the cymbals, and its good to hear your own ideas in this song. Now i have to watch it ten times more.
Thanks for sharing this with us. Really appreciate it!
This is a whole 'nother level of mastery. Kudos, man.
This is the best cover I've seen. Amazing!
Man!!! I love the sound of that Legacy Heavy Ride!!
great job. i am learning this song now and the transcription has made it a lot easier!
Thanks a lot for this video! Waited so much for another Meshuggah cover from you!
this is just amazing. love all your vids but the work on this one is supreme
I like how Troy keeps his hi-hats going when he's not playing it in every song...something I can't do even if I tried!! Keep on drummin bro!!🤘🏾👍🏻
I love Meshuggah and you always fuckin kill it! Awesome job and great tones as always. Well done!
SNARE TONE 2 SICK
Absolutely brutal just like everything you do. Congrats!
Another great cover fair play! Love that song
This is amazing... So amazing...
So far, 22 non-drummers have watched this video. This guy shows an unreal level of talent and dedication.
Same here. First Meshuggah song I ever heard about 7 years ago now. I was learning guitar and was looking for bands that used extended range guitars. May the Swedes live long and make us all grateful for having ears.
I've been waiting for this one!!
You're amazing man. Just amazing.
The one I've been waiting for!
That was absolutely badass.
My last words are:
"FUCKING AWESOME COVER AND THE PLAYABILITY IN THE DRUMS IS INCREDIBLE"
Sooo clean! Like oh my god, this is more impressive then any bleed cover.
Another awesome cover, congrats!
Flawless drumming as usual! You never seem to disappoint:-)
You are the BEST!! I love your work!!!!!!! It is satisfaction for my soul :D
This song looks so tricky. Not fast, just tricky.
Good job!
Troy, I'm a huge fan of your drumming - you obviously really take your time learning all the nooks and crannies of the grooves and patterns and it's really refreshing to see that you're willing to share all this with us fellow musicians! Meshuggah are one of my favourite bands and you really do their songs justice!
Much love from the UK!
P.S. Would love to see you cover some Chimp Spanner songs, particularly The Mirror from At The Dream's Edge!
so tasteful! great interpretation
Awesome cover. I really like the liberties you took, sounded really good. My favorite part was probably the guitar solo background, so full of trickery :D
Nailed it once again!
Always a great day when you drop a new vid ;-)
This is a damn good cover...props to ya
Love your ghost notes.
you're jiving so hard!!! Well done sir!
finally! Been waiting for this :D
Awww
The ending beat on the toms is one on my favorite Meshuggah parts for limb separation.. I like what ya did in lieu but man.. I love the last tom beat.
If I'm counting it correctly, I'm pretty sure it's an 11 over 4 polyrhythm.
When Thomas Haake is ill, they can call you for the drumming part.
Awesome!!!
Nice job. A pleasure to watch as always. I did feel you added a couple things that isnt in the studio release of that track but who can blame you... i bet that is a blast to play :-)
Amazing!
How can someone dislike this?
Awesome cover
Soo mmuch awesome! Great improve
So sick. Would love to see you attack the snare just a touch more, that's one of the things that makes Steve Judd so rad, he puts every ounce of intention into every single snare hit to push things forward and extract every bit of aggression from a groove and it definitely translates. Great work mate.
Holy shit what a performance my hat off to you dude
This made my new earbuds happy.
Jesus , dude you rock man
Great cover. Glad to see your Pridgen Sticks as well :)
Great drumming
Tasty drum rolls I don't remember from the album!
JUST... EPIC!
Very good!!!!!!!!!!!
Incredible
Damn good!
Great tightness and love the cymbal work. :) you got a subscriber in me...
Fantastic
nailed!
Personally, I love my coffee and tea with a bit of SHUGGAH.
*badumtss*
sick cover
buen cover neo!!
didnt think this song was so tricky until i watched this vid. i mean i can get the non pedal grooves fine, on the hat and snare but when youre doing 8ths on hat and having to remember the weird kick shit that gets tricky. but i love it.
It's easy if you remember that there are repeating patterns within the phrase that don't always stick to 2 and 4. In fact with Meshuggah songs they almost never do
Hey Troy, if you can, could you please do a full cover of Spasm? Loving the videos, you're a phenomenal drummer man!
Oh damn, I just read your comment below saying your cover of Spasm was blocked. That's a shame :(
Dude! 2:30 what the crap! so cool. also, this is a great cover. bravo sir.
Stabbin that shit!!! You are ginsu sharp on the drums!!!
SICK COVER-AMAZING-I wish the sm57 Snare mic would pic up the ghost notes a TAd more.....
This is the result of jamming to a certain song for many years I guess. I notice that the way Troy plays feels quite different from Tomas, it's nice to hear.
Fucking amazing mate!
I'm as jealous as I'm going to practice RIGHT NOW! :D
Man! I have always wanted to play this song. Now I have great example:) You are awesome. Is there any paper (pdf) version of this beats? One of the hardest meshuggah songs to play for me. Even the beginning is rediculous. What polyrythm is on hi-hat against china there? And what about these ghost notes on snare? Man! Just fantastic!
Hey Troy, super beast cover. Just wondering how you like the Zen China?
dope ass shiiiiiittt, yea Troy
God that was so fucking good!
fucking good job man!
Excelent as always!
I'm a guitarist and electronic music producer, but your covers makes me wanna buy a kit and get good at the drums.
My suggestion for next video: Marrow or Swarm from Koloss , AAL's The Woven Web or maybe a medley from Sol Niger Within.
