As a child we weren't flush with cash and the grocery store was half an hour away. A dessert treat was a pound cake slice with strawberries over it. Both were frozen and thawed out. I don't know the brand of strawberries, it came in a can and had a nice sauce/juice with it. The pound cake was SaraLee. All topped with whipped cream. I am sure it wasn't as good as the pound cake you got, but it was as close to strawberry shortcake that we could manage.
It's amazing how simple treats can bring back such fond memories! That pound cake with strawberries sounds like a classic childhood favorite. Thanks for watching
The Italian Hoagie from Ricci really does look good with a great crusty roll and high quality meats and veggies. Pound cake is a favorite of mine. I get the old school plain vanilla. I never had it iced. It is good to see you got them iced. The marble pound cake sure does look good. Glad you liked the pound cake. I never saw tomato pie before. I wasn't excited about it either but glad you really liked it and it was a great price. The 2 pork sandwiches sure were different and both looked so good. The mango water ice sure looks like a winner. Considering all the food you got, what a great value. Yes, the tomato pie was surprising at a great value. My favorite were the pound cakes. Great Philadelphia $100 challenge video. 👍
You did everything right, from enjoying a real hoagie to the delightful Stock's pound cake, to Corropolese for their awesome tomato pie, John's Roast Pork and last, but not least, water ice. That is Philadelphia true food scene. I grew up on Stock's pound cake, which was the cake of choice for any major celebration from birthdays to weddings to family reunions. It freezes quite well and is enjoyable any time of the year. I moved to Norristown and discovered the delights of tomato pie from Corropolese, which is truly awesome and whose flavor won the contest this year to be the new flavor of potato chip by Herr's. I cannot wait to see your next food adventure. Take good care of yourselves and wish you both a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

I grew up right on the edge of Philadelphia. Philadelphia and eastern Pennsylvania has absolutely delicious food. I have eaten many hundreds of Philadelphia Italian Hoagies. Mmmmm ❤❤❤❤
Just watched a few of your videos trying the foods in my hometown of Philadelphia....You guys are awesome...You seemed to really enjoy a good cheesesteak. Love your British accent 🥰
Glad you enjoyed it! We ❤️ Philadelphia and will definitely revisit in the future. Let us know if you have any suggestions for future trips. Thanks for watching
It's a Calabria or Calabrese style pizza. It's thicker and made in a sheet pan. You should have gotten the grated cheese on it, especially the Pecorino Romano.
@@thebritstry Mario's Italian Ice on Taylor in Little Italy. Lemon is my favorite. Old family friends own Ferrara's bakery down the street. Get a Cannoli, Sfogliatelle, and Rum Baba... maybe some biscotti and cookies. Al's Italian Beef is down the street too.
Philly had a huge Italian population. Water ice is called Italian water ice. I guess in Chicago they dropped the "woodee" from the name. Need to visit the Italian Market section of Philly. The smell of the meats and food are great there.
Pound cake is delicious toasted for breakfast. As you said it is great with coffee or tea. Easy dessert for a crowd: slice up a store bought pound cake and plop a scoop of ice cream on eachslice. Back in the 70s/80s you always had a pound cake (or danish ring) on hand because someone might drop in for coffee. It was a thing. Anyone remember this?
Thank you for sharing your memories! It’s always wonderful to hear how food brings people together, and pound cake really does have a special place in many hearts. Which is your favorite flavor?
You two are fantastic. I really enjoyed this trip of yours and enjoying unusual foods. I was surprised you liked the tomato pie. The pork sandwiches looked great and I have never seen one. Thank you so much, looking forward to more.
Corropolese is a local national treasure! I'll drive an hour from jersey to pick up a pie for work or a party at times. Also, we have always pronounced it " core-op-o-leeze" So happy you guys showcased them!!
Hog Island eventually became the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard where I was employed for 34 years. I grew up in South Philadelphia and my son still lives in the neighborhood.
Pound Cake. Oh now I want some. My mother would spoon macerated strawberries and its juices over a slice. It would soak into the cake. Oh so good. And of course a dollop of whipped cream.
That sounds absolutely delicious! There's nothing quite like a classic cake topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. A perfect dessert for any occasion!
The vinegar is from the peppers. The works is a bit busy, I usually only get oil because both is *really* messy 😂 . Omg you went to STOCK'S! One of the best bakeries in the city that's not Amish. So, based on your road clips, you hit South Philadelphia, Northeast Philadelphia, Conshohocken.
@@thebritstry the roast pork sandwiches stand on their own. Try getting broccoli rabe and long hots (hot peppers). The spinach replaces the bitter broccoli (a lot of people don't understand what it is). Pork roll is made in New Jersey, great fried up in a sandwich. Glad you enjoyed our city!
Omg, your videos just keep getting better and better. I am in agreement with you in that I think I would have loved everything you tried in this video. I'm shocked that you like that tomato pie so much. It looked very suspect. However, I just knew that the pound cake would be a winner. Its hard to beat a freshly baked pound cake. I'm certain that you have something very similar in England. The hoagie was exactly the way I always order mine. I could almost taste it through my computer. I am also surprised at the cultural journey that you take us on every week. Such rich cultural influences from so many immigrant groups that came here over the years. Mexicans, Italians, Greeks, Chinese, Native Americans, Germans, Poles, Russians, Scots etc... We are very fortunate here to have such a diversity of choices. Your videos are a great reminder of that.
Wow, thanks for the amazing comment! Glad you’re enjoying the video's and the food choices! And yeah, pound cake is totally unbeatable. Let us know if there is anywhere or anything we should try in the future! Let’s keep exploring all these tasty cultures together! 🍰
I adore that you both go out of your way to hit the mom and pop shops that have the best America has to offer , it's immigrant food from around the world kicked up a notch and fused with other cultures.. Well done! Enjoy !!!!
Yum, the pulled pork sandwich looks wonderful! For me, the pulled pork takes it over beef, although I love both. Give me a pulled pork sandwich made from scratch on a great bun and I'm in heaven! Great video!
That tomato pie is amazingly inexpensive! I've spent more on just a regular loaf of sandwich bread. It looks more like focaccia than pizza. I really appreciate the research you do when you visit a city. You find the best, most authentic places, rather than just go to the tourist spots. If you ever make it to Hawaii, you should try shave ice. It's another version of ice with syrup, but the ice is scraped off a big block by a special machine. This technique gives it a light, fluffy texture, almost like snow. They sometimes serve it on top of things like sweetened azuki beans and fruit. Thanks!
Thanks for your thoughtful comment! I'm glad you appreciate the research we do-finding those hidden gems is always a thrill. And shave ice sounds absolutely delicious; we'll definitely have to try it if we make it to Hawaii!
John's should stay open to at least 6pm on a Saturday. Look at the line. Maybe they figure if they are open until 6, orders will go out until 7 and they will be cleaning up until 8 or 9.
We completely agree! Keeping the store open longer would definitely help accommodate all those eager customers in line. I guess they have to close at some point though and you make a good point about the clean up time

I love a good hoagie. The roll is what we call "Italian bread", it's very easy to make at home. My favorite pound cake is lemon flavored, with lots of lemony powder sugar glaze. We do love our jaw-breaker sandwiches. Check out the Dagwood cartoon. I love spinach and onions on my cheesesteak. It seems like wherever Italians settled, they developed delicious food traditions.

The fact that you found Jimmy's as a neighborhood spot is wild. Their chocolate has always been fire with the chocolate chips inside it too. Next time you're around dip a pretzel in it!
They should have went to Reading Terminal and try the Ruben and corned beef special. But there are so many places that have great cuisine in Philadelphia.
I love you guys! You go to my hometown to try out literally, everything. You rock! Pickles and mayo are not what I'd order, but within the realm of personal preference. I'd make sure to get onion. But I'm single. On an Italian hoagie? I'd get oil, onion and hot peppers. I think the most well known pork sandwich is with the broccoli rabe. Oh yeah! You got it.

I’m glad you’re living the Philly flavor. The Philly soft Pretzel is good as well. However, you can’t leave without trying a Nick’s Roast Beef. Get that history beef sandwich with provolone or American cheese. There are 3 Nick’s Roast Beef restaurants in Philly.
Pound cake is good with strawberries and whipped cream, like strawberry shortcake. A drizzle of chocolate is welcome. Subway is awful compared to other places. Especially the local shops anywhere.

Im a lifelong Philadelphian, this is a really amazing list of places! Stocks bakery is an all time gem, as is Coropolesse (pronounced "corpo-lees") but you could have stayed in south philly and gotten the best tomato pie at Cacias! Also, the cheese version of tomato pie is just a dusting of pecorino, it's not like pizza and most people like it that way, I know I do. The ultimate tomato pie move is to take it home and then top it with a good anchovy and cover it in olive oil, kind of like a philly pan con tomate. The BEST

@@thebritstry been here since biscuits and gravy!! Keep it up you are awesome!!
@@thebritstryVery happy you went to the Reading Terminal market 😊
Her laugh is contagious
Thank you! And tanks for watching
Love Italian hoagies. I live near a Jersey Mike's and that's my go to there.
We loved the Italian hoagies too! Jersey Mike’s has some amazing options we will have to give it a try in the future. What's your favorite filling?
@@thebritstry Salami is my favorite meat. And I get extra tomatoes 🍅 but I happen love tomatoes.
Love jersey Mike
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! The Italian Hoagie and pound cake really are standout items. It's great to hear you enjoyed the video!
I grew up on Philly food and when I went away to university, wow, what a shock especially with sandwiches and pizza !
The food was amazing in Philadelphia and we had a great time! Thanks for watching
Keep up the good work BRITS
Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much for watching! We are currently in the process of planning it. 🤗 Happy Christmas and we hope you have a wonderful New Year!
Those Hoagies looked awesome, I wanted one for myself ! I think one of those pound cakes would be dessert for a whole week ! LOL
Possibly!!😊😊 I love making pound cake!!
😂 Yes they were bigger than we thought they would be!
You two are absolutely adorable and are totally living the dream. I'm living vicariously through your food adventures.
Thank you so much for your kind words! We are having a great time and we are glad you are enjoying the videos
Always go to 'mom & pop' shops rather than any chain. So much better!!!
Love your reactions.
So glad to see you back in our beautiful Commonwealth! I'm from northeast PA and have greater ties to Philly, but you also need to visit. Pittsburgh!
Thanks for watching, Pittsburgh is definitely on our radar. Let us know if you have suggestion of where to try when we manage to get there.
Welcome to the city of Brotherly Love! The birthplace of America.🔔 Enjoyed watching your show. Good to know that you’re enjoying the food Philly has to offer.
Have fun & enjoy your visit!👍
Thank you so much for the warm welcome! Philly truly has a special vibe, and the food is just incredible!
So happy yo see you two enjoy the beautiful sandwiches in Philadelphia. Philly is the sandwich city of the country. New York ain’t too shabby either. But Philly takes the prize.
Thanks for watching! We really enjoyed Philadelphia just wish we had more time there.
England needs a sandwich revolution. 😂
😂 your right
Hello from middle Tennessee way out in the sticks! We so adore y’all! Your positive attitude and just all around fun is so refreshing! We’ve been thinking of doing some trips based on your travels! So many thanks!
Thank you so much for your kind words! We're thrilled to hear that you enjoy our content and are inspired to plan some trips based on our travels. Happy adventuring and let us know where you decide to visit.
Roast Pork Sammy’s… the BEST! Great episode.
So glad you enjoyed the episode! Roast Pork Sammy's are a game-changer! Johns roast pork was great but let us know if next time we should try somewhere else?
The hoagie with salami, ham, peperoni, and bacon is the best.
Great review of the offerings found in Philly. Now I want a pork sandwich!!!!!😂
Thank you for your kind words!! we are craving another one as well.
Love your videos. Keep up the good work !!!!
Glad you like them! Thanks for taking the time to watch..
There is another tomato pie in south Philadelphia call New York bakery is delicious and more of a crunch to it. My favorite ❤️
Of all the people that I watch that have come to America to enjoy the food. I like you too the best. I very much enjoyed your visit. I can't wait until you come back and do it some more.
Thank you so much for your very kind words! we have lots of more video to upload soon
I grew up right on the edge of Philadelphia. Philadelphia and eastern Pennsylvania has absolutely delicious food. I have eaten many hundreds of Philadelphia Italian Hoagies. Mmmmm ❤❤❤❤
They are delicious!!
LOVE THE HISTORY!!!
Thank you!!
Just watched a few of your videos trying the foods in my hometown of Philadelphia....You guys are awesome...You seemed to really enjoy a good cheesesteak. Love your British accent 🥰
Enjoy it how you like but I always have oil and vinegar with an Italian Hoagie.
Thanks for sharing your favorite way to enjoy an Italian Hoagie! I love hearing everyone's unique twists on classic dishes!
I grew up with Corropolese, tomato pie, hoagies and pastries! Was there this morning (2nd location). Keep up the videos!
Thank you for sharing! we are so jealous! that tomato pie was outstanding
Philadelphia born and raised and you got my favorites. You had a good list. Tomato pie is great for parties because it is good at room temperatures
I really enjoyed all of videos on Philadelphia. Thank you for visiting and highlighting my beautiful city !
Thanks for the tips! The one without cheese was delicious so with cheese it would have been perfect. Next time we will give it a try
Chicago's version of water ice is Italian Ice. Not sure which came first.
We didn't know that!! we might have to try and google to find out.
They came from Italy. New York, Philly and Chicago have the biggest Italian populations so they brought them
Pound cake is delicious toasted for breakfast.
Pork Roll is to New Jersey (South Jersey) as Cheese Steak is to Philly.
Pork roll is just as famous in Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania as cheesesteaks are to New Jersey 😊
Facts
@jefit originated in North Jersey, so OP is correct.
fhampton2767
The oil on that hoagie is like a salad dressing for the lettuce and veg.
Thanks for the information!
You two are fantastic. I really enjoyed this trip of yours and enjoying unusual foods. I was surprised you liked the tomato pie. The pork sandwiches looked great and I have never seen one. Thank you so much, looking forward to more.
Thank you for the kind words! We're glad you enjoyed the trip and the unique foods. The tomato pie was definitely a surprise for us too!
Corropolese is a local national treasure! I'll drive an hour from jersey to pick up a pie for work or a party at times.
Also, we have always pronounced it " core-op-o-leeze" So happy you guys showcased them!!
It was delicious and definitely worth the drive time to get there! Thanks for sharing
The way my jaw dropped when y'all said that tomato pie was only $5.75 haha
It was delicious too! Thank you for watching
You guys did great! All the food you got looked great, and you still had 30.00 dollars left for two people. Great job!
Thank you!! 😁
Hog Island eventually became the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard where I was employed for 34 years. I grew up in South Philadelphia and my son still lives in the neighborhood.
Wow! Thanks for sharing your story and thanks for watching
I Itailian hoagie my favorite
Let us know what you think of the one we tried! Thanks for the first comment!!!
@@thebritstry I like mine with cherry peepers
The vinegar is from the peppers. The works is a bit busy, I usually only get oil because both is *really* messy 😂 .
Omg you went to STOCK'S! One of the best bakeries in the city that's not Amish.
So, based on your road clips, you hit South Philadelphia, Northeast Philadelphia, Conshohocken.
Thanks for the advice!
Everyone from Philly, or, South Jersey pronounces "water" as "wooder".
Thank you for the clarification! We were told that was the case.
Lol!! I agree with all you said except the natives were already here lol!! Have a great day!!

Wow, thanks for the amazing comment! Glad you’re enjoying the video's and the food choices! And yeah, pound cake is totally unbeatable. Let us know if there is anywhere or anything we should try in the future! Let’s keep exploring all these tasty cultures together! 🍰
You will get there😊
I adore that you both go out of your way to hit the mom and pop shops that have the best America has to offer , it's immigrant food from around the world kicked up a notch and fused with other cultures..
Well done! Enjoy !!!!
Thank you ! let us know if you have any recommendations?
Yum, the pulled pork sandwich looks wonderful! For me, the pulled pork takes it over beef, although I love both. Give me a pulled pork sandwich made from scratch on a great bun and I'm in heaven! Great video!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! The roast pork was delicious . We are craving another right now. Thanks for watching
Pulled pork is something different. That is a roast pork sandwich. Pulled pork is shredded pork from a barbecue smoker.
Too bad you didn't make it to Reading Terminal Market and Dinic's for their roast pork sandwich....and the many other vendors in the market.
We might have done that😉😉 Watch this space
John's is better.
If you guys ever come back, y'all must try The Cheesecake Lady. But make sure to arrive early because they sell out fast.
Thank you for the recommendation! We'll make sure to plan our visit accordingly next time. Can't wait to indulge in some delicious cheesecake!
All you guys were missing is chips....wit that hoagie... that price is right 👍👍
Thanks for your input! You’re spot on about the chips; they really would have completed the meal. We'll keep that in mind for our hoagie!!
I guess they have to close at some point though and you make a good point about the clean up time
Go to Reading Terminal on your next trip. Everything in there is delicious, but the Amish restaurants are amazingly delicious. Di Nic’s 😢roast pork is a so good, Bassett’s 0:15 🎉🎉ice cream and the pretzels are delicious
We might have already been😉 Watch this space and we will upload the video soon
I love a good hoagie. The roll is what we call "Italian bread", it's very easy to make at home. My favorite pound cake is lemon flavored, with lots of lemony powder sugar glaze. We do love our jaw-breaker sandwiches. Check out the Dagwood cartoon. I love spinach and onions on my cheesesteak. It seems like wherever Italians settled, they developed delicious food traditions.
Absolutely! Italian bread truly makes a hoagie special, and lemon pound cake with glaze sounds divine. Food traditions really do bring people together! Thanks for watching
Philly is the sandwich Mecca
Philly truly has some of the best sandwiches out there. It's a food lover's paradise! We would love to come back and spend more time there in the future.
Ree-shee's. That Italian sub LOOKS AMAZING. Just Amazing. One of my go-to's, Italian subs, then steak & cheese.
Thank you for watching! Italian subs have a special place in our hearts now too! (and stomach). 😂
The fact that you found Jimmy's as a neighborhood spot is wild. Their chocolate has always been fire with the chocolate chips inside it too. Next time you're around dip a pretzel in it!
Thanks for the advice! Jimmy’s was so good and friendly. That pretzel hack sounds delicious
@thebritstry thanks for shining a light on some of the mom and pop shops in my city! Earned a sub from me keep up the good work!
Oh yeah! You got it.
We really appreciate your support and love for our channel! Your insights on the local cuisine are fantastic-thanks for sharing your preferences with us!
I was so worried you weren’t going to order the roast pork sandwich for a minute 😅 I hope you enjoyed your time in Philly!
We loved it!!! John’s roast pork was so good. We have just posted another Philadelphia you from the reading terminal market. Thanks for watching
Great review guys!!! All those sandwiches looked AWESOME 👌🏿
Thank you for taking the time to watch!
Thanks for the advice, we did try a soft pretzel (or 7) but we missed Nicks, next time we will give it a try. Thanks for watching
Pound cake is good with strawberries and whipped cream, like strawberry shortcake. A drizzle of chocolate is welcome. Subway is awful compared to other places. Especially the local shops anywhere.
Thanks for the tip!!!! Pound cake with strawberries, chocolate and whipped cream sounds delicious. And yes, local shops often have such unique flavors that you can't find anywhere else! Thanks for watching
If you happen to go to Maryland for steamed crabs, crab cakes, and cream of crab soup, you should absolutely try the authentic Smith Island Cake. You'll find it on Smith Island of course in Maryland. Another Maryland favorite is Berger Cookies.
Yes Maryland should be next. Love jumbo lump crabcakes 😊
Thank you for sharing those delicious recommendations! I love hearing about local favorites - it makes the food adventure even more exciting! We will definitely look into it!
@@thebritstry As I mentioned months ago...Pappas is the place to get the best crab cake and cream of crab soup. It's one of Oprah Winfrey's favorites. ENJOY!! Philly here. Good stuff.
Thanks for tuning in! Glad you enjoyed the content from Philly!
The BEST
Thanks for sharing your insights! It’s always great to hear from fellow Philadelphians about their favorite spots. Cacia's and the tomato pie tips sound delicious! Next time we will give it a try.
I live in Philadelphia and you guys hit all of the good spots. Love your reactions
