    • @timbuckman3870
      @timbuckman3870 3 місяці тому +3

      Exactly. People heard the word Deutsche, but then said Dutch. Most of the Amish, the settlers in that area, were from Germany, but a few were from other countries in Europe, including The Netherlands, but they spoke German and very many of them still do.

      "Dutch", "Dietsch", "Deutsch", it's all the same word, just with a different accent or, depending on how you draw the line, dialect; and the boundary lines between countries in central Europe are largely a function of the politics of the mid nineteenth century, which were closely tied in with who was more afraid of being dominated by France and/or Russia than they were of being dominated by Prussia and/or Austria. If unification had happened at a different point in time, the lines might be very different, and the Netherlands might indeed be part of the same country as the area around Berlin, or it might have a very different border, or Austria might be included, or Bavaria might be independent, or Baden and Wurttemberg, or Silesia might be independent, or ... the list goes on. If you look at a timelapse map of the polities in that part of the world in the seventeenth and eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, you have to keep pausing the thing and studying it because it's a long series of huge sweeping changes. Countries you've never heard of arise out of seemingly nowhere, only to disappear again a few months later. Borders shift so far and so fast that even a relatively major kingdom can end up having *none* of the same territory it started with, after only a few years. That area right there? Yeah, that belongs to Spain, no, wait, now it belongs to Austria, no, wait, now it belongs to Lithuania, no, wait, now it's been split up into three different independent countries... nevermind, now it's all been taken over by France...
      Basically, history is complicated.

      @@injunsun Eh ... no. The PA Dutch were here well before the large wave of immigration from Germany in the first half of the 20th century. I went to Shady Maple many times, while we lived in Lancaster. I liked breakfast there, as you could have omelettes made to order. Some years ago there was a smaller restaurant downstairs, and since Shady Maple was pretty expensive we ate downstairs instead. There was even a good-sized gift store downstairs, too. Just so you know, Shady Maple is neither Mennonite nor Amish food. It's Pennsylvania Dutch food. From what I've seen on youtube, most people say it's Amish. I think this is because it's in Lancaster. It's PA Dutch though.
    PA Dutch folks are primarily of German descent. Most of our food comes out of Germanic cooking. Amish is mostly Swiss-German and Dutch, and Mennonite is a mix of a lot of different authenticities, German, Dutch, Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, etc. The food is all similar, and in my opinion, it is just delicious!
    I so get you when it comes to liver and onions. It's one of those very deceptive dishes. It smells so delicious cooking, but it tastes like absolute poo when you eat it. LOL I don't like that liver taste either. I don't like any organ meats.

    The dried corn you were wondering about is known as Cope's Corn. Hokey smoke! Didn't realize you folks lived in the US! This opens soooo much. Tour our Indian reservations and experience the culture and the food (fry bread is my favorite). Wisconsin is an amazing place for Italian and fish! Their southeast corner has a strong Italian connection and the north specializes in fish fries and boils. Michigan is close to my heart and offers the most beautiful creation the Detroit coney dog, polish perogies and Cornish pasties. Love you guys!

    The stuffing should be eaten with a coating of gravy. Some people like to put gravy on mashed potatoes.

    • @llschnitz
      @llschnitz 3 місяці тому

      If the stuffing is really good and properly seasoned why would you want to hide its flavor with gravy?

    • @BenHarrellJr
      @BenHarrellJr 3 місяці тому

      @@llschnitz It's just the way we eat it in the South. It helps alot if the stuffing is dry. Of course if it is not dry, you can certainly eat it without gravy. If the gravy is prepared properly, it doesn't mask the flavor of the stuffing and adds a umami flavor to it.

    I recommend in future visits to buffets that you also get the accompanying gravy and sauces. You can still taste a little without it first, but generally if there’s an accompaniment like that, it’s meant to be poured on top or eaten alongside the food.
    That’s corn pudding you ate. The sausage is pronounced “kill-bah-saw”.
