- This is the Extended Cut!
Dan Rich, Overland Bound Member 0582 has worked for Toyota for 30 years in Power-train Research and Development. For much of that time he has tried many different things on his FZJ80, which has led to the build he shares in this video. His rig is modest, but performs well, and reliably. Enjoy!
Extended Cut coming later tonight!

please, please, PLEASE!!! get him to show you around his trailer. i got so excited when i saw his trailer and i was sad to find out it wasn't in the video at all.
Love to see inside his 10th iteration tool kit! ..Or just a detailed list ; )
Cool guy. Obviously could've tacked on every flashy part imaginable, but experience distilled it down to the basics that work. Solid rig.
Well, there was the part when he got TRD to develop a supercharger.
Fascinating. Loved this extended format. Finally joined over Christmas OB#10076. I'm not in the rough yet but I am a long haul driver (frequent trips Dallas - Ottawa). Your channel is helping me through the planning and the things that I have to consider when committing to my adventure wagon.
Great to hear!
Wish we could have gotten a better view of the center console / switch panel area! No one ever gets good video of those areas in these walk around videos
right . im looking at building a rig to do some treking in a few years ,hen the father in law passes , and it really amazes me some of the ideas ppl come up with to modify and keep the engine bay coolas well as the engine
Great coverage Micheal and Corrie!
Sounds like the dual battery switching system he built with the solenoid is exactly like my Painless Wiring dual battery setup I have had for years with no trouble.
Very simple, no digital stuff to fail on it, only thing is you have to move the toggle to one of three positions which is super easy.
Hey I am Australian with a Diesel 80 series. Its been rigged with a few things to cope with the terrain and heat. But there is always improvements that can help. Most 80's here have more than i have but it all costs. I suggest you come down here and join a tour group that is crossing Australia. You will have a great time.
Wow, to have this gentleman's knowledge in building an overland rig would be phenomenal. His rig is incredible...makes me wonder how many SEMA creations have actually seen any dirt time. I noticed he has his flag affixed to his right shoulder, should be on his left sleeve. Give him an Overland Bound patch to put on his right shoulder.
At 09:23 noticed the rock on the top left hand corner shaped like a baby elephant? Incredible vid.
This guy and rig will be rolling in the hills and surrounds long after many of the app and mod crazy modern versions available.
This video is incredible - honestly one of the best FZJ80 builds out there. Learned so much.
It’s been 20 years and I haven’t seen better builds
Sure enjoyed the low key approach of your guest.
Another great informative video on a great 80 series.. thanks to us Aussies.. haha... This has given me a few more ideas for mine.
Extended cut was definitely worth watching!
A lot of hard work Dan, solid vehicle and solid ideas.
The sr71 was gorgeous.
That scenery is spectacular! Great video, thanks :)
Wow! Great vid and walk around! I thoroughly enjoyed that! Highly considering selling my 3rd Gen Taco and going back to an older design. I've had four Toyotas now and my favorites were my 98' 4Runner and my 00' Taco. I'd actually like to know from a Toyota engineer why mechanically, the new power trains suck. Specifically the gear hunting issue... I regress, FANTASTIC rig and video! Thanks OB!
i have infinitely more respect for the custom diy fab overland rig than for the overpriced overland market shopper rig
he said brain to paper to steel was a lot of fun and i agree 100000000%
Another awesome video featuring an amazing rig! Thank you and keep up the great work!
So glad I ran across this video! The electric fan mod is awesome!
What size tire are you running? The rig looks perfect!!!
The extended video thing is brilliant, i like the details.
I’d love his rig but with a Warn or Superwinch, selectable locking diffs and perhaps a crawl box
these came with factory front and rear lockers, here in Canada, so in California USA they will be the same thing
That thing is just a dream vehicle.
Wow..great review, Your guess is very knowledgeable, I hope you guys can have more reviews and podcast together.
On the radiator water misters. I've built exactly such a system into my V8 3UZ powered Defender as a safety net when I use it hard and in short it works excellent! It's automatically switched on when the coolant temps exceed 98C or can be manually switched on before a long hard climb and drops the temps very quickly. The trick is to use high water pressure (130psi water pump) and very fine metal misters. What I suspect Dan did wrong was to soak the radiator instead of misting it either by using too low pressure water pump (maybe the headlight sprayer pump) and/or spray nozzles which are too bid. The most water efficient and optimal heat transfer comes from the evaporation effect on the radiator and not the heat transfer of the liquid itself. I did a 4 day 1000km 4WD touring trip with the vehicle loaded and on 35s climbing hills and driving sand in 40C heat. I did the whole trip with the 40L water tank and never had to top it up. Will definitely be installing this system (with a refined design) on my 1HDFT Auto 80
Need to get the Engineer the correct US Flag for his jacket. Stars should be leading.
The Australians have the best off road stuff - they do it right.
stapleboss we've got to stay ahead of the drop bears mate.
They actually legit need it that's why lol
Great suv build, great guy, please tell him his flag patch is backwards on his right shoulder sleeve.
Awesome video! Why'd Dan has his flag facing the wrong way, though.
Not enough attention to that air-up system! That’s so awesome!
I suspect that the reason your radiator sprayer did not appear effective is because the airflow is so rapid that the water drops are flying right past the radiator and condenser. What we found is that you can carry away 20% more heat with a sprayer if the spay is atomized to a very fine (extremely fine) mist.
Thanks for your comment Billy Bob, actually what I was trying to say is that I was using those patio "misters" which are a very fine mist. What I think is the problem is the volume of water is not enough. I can't put enough on to cool effectively, and I can't carry enough in the space I have to pump enough to significantly reduce the heat.
Awesome 80, really enjoyed seeing Dan's setup!
great info thank you both for taking the time & effort.
Great video. I have several really good ideas from this video.
Love that center console!
That was a really nice vid, enjoyed a lot. No over the top chat, nice one. G
Literally a pioneer!
It’s crazy that he pitched Supercharger for the 1FZ-FE
land cruiser rules!
Great rig Dan , keep working her
Thanks!
Amazing ride!! Thank you for sharing.
Given the Toyota powertrain background, did you consider getting a Toyota 4.2L diesel turbo - 1HZ or 1HD-T? Using Toyota parts it would be easy to bolt in. That 44gal tank would give you serious range....
Here in Australia any serious 4wd for long trips uses diesel.. I have a '97 Nissan Patrol with the TD42 (diesel 4.2L) which is boosted to 10psi. Absolutely stock motor apart from plumbing and turbo. Gives great torque on and off road, easily cruises at country speed limit. Gets 1000km+ from 130Litres.
Darth Vader thanks DV, the diesel is a great swap engine but wasnt available in the US so jts quite expensive. Ill stick with the gas for now, gas is cheaper than diesel here so theres that, but maybe one day a diesel swap is in my future!
Probably unlikely you’ll need a new engine. I believe you said it only has 160,000 miles.
Unless your going to do it for the heck of it.
Must be still finalizing the upload. Video is not HD yet. Great video with lots of information. OB #0650
Yup - give it a few. JUST finished uploading. Thanks!
Guy seems like a good dude.
Water mister idea is great! Improve it!
I can’t wait to get my Land Cruiser!
@Overland Bound I'd like to see a video on his trailer
Def worth watching! I noticed Dan was wearing a backwards flag, Im in the army and thats how we wear our flags, did he serve at all? He strikes me as the military type with the jacket as well. Thanks for posting the video!
Aaron Real not military but the deepest respect.
Appreciate that! I followed you on IG, if I have any questions ill be sure to ask you.
Dan Rich sir, what jacket is this?
VFR5GEN it's actually an off-brand I bought off an instagram seller and I wouldn't recommend it. Look at a Propper or Condor Tactical, maybe even a 5.11 depending on your budget. Cheers.
Thanks for the quick reply and the insight. See you on the trail.
Can't go past an LC80 for out back Australia at least any mechanic can fix them and the catch can for the diff breathers was a good idea as i do get the diff oil coming all the way back up my diff breathers even with the extension
So I can thank him for the awful drivetrain in my 2017 Tacoma
roger brown
Ya I agree. 2017 Tacoma sounds like a cheap PT cruiser motor ticking all over.
It was a group effort really.
Lol don't say that, I have a 99' Taco I want to trade in for a 3rd gen or 4R.
You can thank the CEO and other administrators for trying to squeeze in every change saving component
theres a reason why hes not driving one and is sticking with a 25 y/o landcruiser
really cool rig. I also really liked the extended rig walk around.
Nice video. Very well done. Thank you both! :)
50 min video and I didn't get to see the engineers toolbox. Are you f****** kidding me. Otherwise one if the best walk through I've ever seen. This one's getting added to the faves
I didn’t think Blackbirds were cool until Black Ops 1. 🤣
Very informative!
Wow, a confirmation bias video that I can get behind.. I’m stoked that an engineer from Toyota gives us hands on rig knowledge.. he does however, have a lot more tech gear than I’d be comfortable with.. LOL regards #745
I liked the video, but somebody please get him to turn his flag patch around to his left arm. When on display, the stars always rest to the observer's left. When worn on either arm, the stars point forward. And the flag should only be worn on the right by veterans. Trivial to some, but it's important to veterans.
Very informative video, thanks.
With all his concerns about engine temps, you'd think he drove a Land Rover Discovery.
Very interesting build for off road. Where can I get more info on this build? Pls advice. Thks
Dan what do you think about supercharging a 5th gen 4R, it doesn’t appear to be a common mod.
First you need to sell the 5th gen, and get an 80
Really wanted to see that gas tank since he has 44 gallons.
Really nice rig
What kind of modifications did you do to the drive train?
Thank you
Great video
Watching this video really got me sleepy.
Hmm other people remove airbags out of the GX470 for overlanding, but you added them in, hows reliability?
I have a 1984 Toyota 4x4 XtraCab pickup that is my only running vehicle, daily driver. I wheel lightly, because if i roll it, i'm screwed. Pretty much every upgrade is homemade, cause i'm poor. But i have many tools n skills.
New frame from the doors back. Sliders, front and rear tube bumpers, Mile-Marker 10k lb hydraulic winch, 5:29 gears, e-locker rear, 35" tires, Marlin 4:70 gears in the t-case for 100-1 gear reduction. F-150 rear springs (longer, thinner, better articulation). Highsteer crossover steering. Diff breathers (+ tranny/ t-case) connected to a cheap fuel filter then to the snorkel tube.
I don't see the wisdom of using electric air compressors on a rig. I put a York AC compressor (10 cfm) on my engine (with regulator)...between all the 4" tube tanks i've squirreled away i have about 20 gallons of capacity. If i find an RV2 compressor i'll put that on instead (higher CFM). Those cheapo Harbor Fright air horns work Really Good with 90psi behind them.
I carry a full set of sockets/ tools because i never know what i'll be working on. So i can help out those Jeep guys.
A second 140amp GM alternator modified is my Weldernator. No need to string 3 batteries together. My 30' 1 gauge jumper cables (anderson connectors on each end) double as my welding leads. Stinger and ground clamp, 1/8"-3/16" welding rods kept in a tube with dessicant. Also a Readywelder spoolgun with .030 fluxcore wire, works good in a windy situation. Carry a tarp for a wind-shield (doubles as a ground sheet for packing away your stuff in wet/ dirty/ muddy conditions).
I have 1 starting battery in the engine compartment (soon 2, after i swap in a 1.9L VW turbo-diesel) and 2 large gelcell (wheelchair) batteries in a box just behind the rear axle. Twin 20 gallon fuel tanks either side in front of the axle. Driveline e-brake on the t-case.
The 14' long roof rack mounts to rails that stick out from between the bed and fiberglass topper (so the bed takes the weight). Sticks out 34" behind to keep rain off the topper hatch when it's open, and the front is even with the windshield wipers. 1/2" treated plywood on top to keep the sun off the truck (and makes a nice platform to sit on to watch lightning...;) Two 6' plastic folding tables are stored in the 4.5" space between the roof rack and the topper, along with 4 folding camp chairs in (2) 5"dia tubes. The roof rack is the best place to mount antennas if you want 360* coverage. 102" whip antenna for the CB and HF ham (Tarheel screwdriver antenna would be better for ham, but it's $400), homemade twinlead j-pole antenna for 70cm and 2-meters (Yaesu FT-897 does it all). Ham radio is controlled by Ham Radio Deluxe running on onboard computer (Udoo x86 Advanced SBC running Peppermint OS), which also does music, internet, and GPS. 15" monitor is held by a steel bracket in front of the dash (above the 5-speed stickshift). Wireless mousepad in center of steering wheel.
Homemade ham lojack and a good security system. You steal my truck, just pretend I'm Liam Neeson in Taken.
I've been thinking about the Firestone air springs (airbags) but i don't have the $125 ea. Likewise, i'd love to go Overlanding but just don't have the cash. I should be at the 2018 Lonestar Toyota Jamboree though.
This is not all the stuff i've built into my truck. It's about 80%. There's more RC FPV/RPV stuff, telescoping antenna/ camera masts, thermal-mass heating, etc.
That sounds awesome man, you should make an overview video, I'd watch it!
"Modest" isn't how I would describe this with Supercharger, dual batteries, multiple redundant coms and 4 point compressor along with airbags, refrigeration and fancy differential breathers.
Super nice rig, tire size? They look like 295/75? I'm on the fence current between that age old discussion of 295 vs 315.
Of course an engineer would say form follows function haha
(I was a mechanical engineering student turned graphic designer so I feel like I can speak to this lol)
Awesome guys and awesome rig. Definitely going to follow on gram.
Very Cool .... where did you get the debris plugs for the air chucks ??!!
Those are made by wits end. He's an innovative guy that builds a bunch of stuff, mostly for Landcruisers. You can find him on Instagram @witsend
Thank You ... : )
Ha! Just saw the video. Awesome! Dan when did you do the misters? I attempted the same thing back in 2014...same results. 😜
Oh and my IG is wits.end 👍🏻
Did he mention he’s running an auxiliary fuel tank? If so, details on that setup would be great for me.
Roland Rosso he is. 44 gal. A pump pushes the aux gas to the original tank when he needs it.
Jesse Moore thank you! Is there a link to that setup? I relocated my spare and I would think the accessory tank would go down there. I was thinking about a water tank, but maybe the extra fuel (44 gallons is huge though) would make more sense.
Roland Rosso I didn’t see a link but he did mention the brand of you watch the video.
maybe get an Instagram account.. and hit him up..he said he would love to collaborate with others.
Love ya 80 mate.
Good man!
Nice truck.
What size rock sliders? 4x innovations don't seem to have the ones for a 94 4.5l Land cruiser anymore. Just ones for Tacoma's and 4runners.
"Form follows function" - Louis Henry Sullivan, American Architect.
Credit where credit is due.
Jason Smith thanks for accreditation, never said I invented it, didn't want to take the credit!
I know. I attributed the quote to Louis Sullivan. By the way, I started researching your catch can breather as soon as I finished watching the video. Great idea. Amazon is my friend. * thumbs up *
And love the rig. Always wanted an 80 series. I'll have to settle for my '04 Tacoma double cab.
Nice rig, what size tires are you running?
my kinda guy
Atomize methanol, not water, and it will get cool - that button is not a failed idea
Might be a little awkward sprayin atomized methanol on the trail. Then again I don’t know what that is
awesome! need to go to bed soon so im playing it at 2x speed! haha
Ha! Good thinking!
Same here, I did 1.25 X
That is genius
1.5 speed for me. It’s late.
Great walk around, thank you. Question - At 4:40 in the vid there is a close up of the air chuck with a dust cap on the front ARB bumper. Can we get any more information about how this air chuck is mounted, whether it is a special product or just a standard air chuck, and where one might find the cool dust cap? (Overland Bound member #8707)
Ken Collier sorry Ken, just saw your question. It's a standard fitting with washers on both sides of the bumper for stability. Although they do make specific panel-mount fittings this isn't one, just get a good high quality brass fitting. The dust cap comes from @witsend, you can find him on Instagram. He makes a lot of different products like this.
This guy is the gun guy from tremors
Thats very cool
Respect.
Where did you get the caps for the air connectors
Love all the information but the host needs to speak up hard to hear him at times
Shame you didn't get the 1HD-T engines over there. A great overland vehicle has good low rpm torque and good fuel economy, not good horsepower at 5000 rpm. Oh,,, and it's also waterproof, unlike a gas engine.
in my opinion. the 80 series is the last truly great landcruiser but the worst of the good ones. The us market ones suck because of the 1fz engine.
It beggars believe that they never offered the 1HD-T in the USA.
They also never offered the 70 series. I am sure Toyota have their reasons but I have always found it odd. Your not Mark Harvey from Zambia are you?
Love this! Thank you for sharing! Faye
Great video. Lots of good, valuable information.
Except, American flag patch of the right sleeve is incorrect. Stars should be to the right, facing forward. The patch he’s wearing is the one worn on a left shoulder.
Because our colors don't run from battle, we run towards it 💯💯
actually: how you wear the flag, as long as it’s not disrespectful or in violation of the US Code, is up to you.
Some day.
Not gonna lie, not the most amazing overlanding rig setup I've seen. Impressive and definitely better than most however definitely cluttered and quite unorganised in some areas but that is just my opinion!
Thanks John, appreciate your comment. I can find everything I need when I need it, so for me it's organized, but cluttered... maybe.
When it comes to overlanding rigs with functionality and uncluttered organised systems Australia has the game mastered!
Maybe that's why the 2020 Tpyotas look like they have the same tech.
Anyone know what wheels/tires those are? Great utilitarian look.
Ryan Ochs thanks Ryan, those are standard d-slot steel wheels, I Bought at 4wheel parts, tires are BFF K/O2's, 285/75-16.
Thanks Dan. Highly informative walk through. Many ideas for my 80!
Awesome !
Is there a list for complete tool kit that you have?
