When a Toyota R&D Engineer Builds an Overland Rig - FZJ80 Rig Walk Around
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 сер 2024
- Dan Rich, Overland Bound Member 0582 has worked for Toyota for 30 years in Power-train Research and Development. For much of that time he has tried many different things on his FZJ80, which has led to the build he shares in this video. His rig is modest, but performs well, and reliably. Enjoy!
Extended Cut coming later tonight!

One of the best build out there, form following function.
Without a doubt Dan is one of the most interesting and credible people I have ever seen talking about an overland vehicle, online or anywhere. Sadly, most of what we see online is either ill-informed, impractical, self-aggrandising, opinionated without substance or blatantly pushing the products of their "sponsor". None of these criticisms apply to Dan. Thanks for this video.
Nice rig!!! Architect Louis Sullivan wrote the expression "FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION". The quote said: "Whether it be the sweeping eagle in his flight, or the open apple-blossom, the toiling work-horse, the blithe swan, the branching oak, the winding stream at its base, the drifting clouds, over all the coursing sun, form ever follows function, and this is the law. ..."
„Form Follows Function“ is one of the key Bauhaus principles.
Love this, this man is a genius! He's like the Jonathan Winters of the overland world.
Great Guy with a Great Rig! Looking forward to the extended video!
He's an honorary Aussie with all that gear!
Any chance we can see the trailer in another video? Liking that mini bike!
Awesome build! Can't wait to see the extended cut!
I like this guy! no nonsense gear! I hate those "garage overlanders" that begin their description of every item with the brand but probably don't even know how to use their gear... this guy is like, hey they work, no particular brand, form over function, too busy tearing trails to worry about your parking lot overlanding
That center console and those ram mounts are super handy
As a mechanical engineer having a dream to be in r&d for toyota and or TRD how do I get my foot in the door?! Amazing rig btw!
No advice from the guy?
Those Taurus E fans have been pillaged for years! I can remember people using those in rigs back in the 90's
y-y-y- love you front licence plate flip
this guy is a true macgyver!
Great video guy's, You should hire the camera man full time, best camera work I have ever seen !!!!!
mason north LOL!
Great video!!! Keep it up.👍🏻
I'm curious about his privacy screens on the back window.
Nice rig
Another primo walk around vid.
Thank you!
He said he has a 4' Firestik to support his Dual Band radio. What Firestik is that? I was unaware that they had a 4' antenna in dual band. Thanks for the info and great videos!!
what an amazing rig!!!!
I love how he keeps it KISS even though I'm sure he makes good money at Toyota and could probably buy all the flavor of the month bolt ons.
Did we watch the same video?
Great rig. Console kicks ass. And like many people are wondering....who makes that jacket?
Pretty certain it's made by Condor... the Summit Soft Shell jacket... you can get it on Amazon.
His flag patch is backwards... don't do that... should be always moving forward.
Very nice
anyone notice the 100/105 series steering wheel
HI, does one of the versions address tire size? I'm assuming 31" tires, factory lockers and no gear mods? Thanks for videos!
What brand welder is that?
I see that pit bike!
Yes! So fun!
Where is the extended one?
That will be done uploading in a couple hours. Thanks for watching!
just finished watching this one and will be back! haha awesome build.
Why did he paint the hood black?
1FZ is a slug for sure. Anyone know what type of supercharger that is?
superspeeed it's a TRD twin scroll I believe
wouldn't call it a slug with an aftermarket ecu they go like a cut cat
I want his jacket. What kind is it and who sells it?
Rusty Bryant me2!
Me three. Anybody know?
I am pretty sure it is an Arcteryx LEAF jacket
Condor Summit Soft Shell jacket, available on Amazon... not sure if he's using the lightweight version or not, but it's definitely not Arc'Teryx...
a 95 cloth AND NO SUN ROOF?!?! what is this wizardry??
Hahaha!
Interesting. Nice to see the Puma. I'd like to know more about the welder. One item, I think that you both would like are the rear flip up doors. LandCruiserPhil here in Phoenix makes them sites.google.com/site/landcruiserproducts/windows and they are a straight forward design, easy to install and don't leak. Makes getting to stuff in the back much easier and quicker than dealing with the swingouts. I can get into my ARB when we're on the trail pronto and it also helps to get to the Puma, which Phil also has a decently priced mount for, that utilizes the third row seat bolt holes. Peace! #3630
Cameraman sucks at focusing on the closeups... would be nice to see some of the details.
I believe computers were added to new crs from '86 on.. After that, a car can be hacked into from another computer. Hence, the engineer here keeps his old model Toyota
its a 95
you are right Kevin, my mistake
it probably has very control modules in it tho
Just a tip. Wear that Aussie flag on the left arm not the right.
