WHY I DRIVE A TOYOTA 4WD | StoryTIME with Andrew St Pierre White

  • Опубліковано 7 лют 2018
  • My relationship with Toyota spans 20 years, from 1994 when I wrote my second book, to 2014 when Toyota South Africa finally handed over the keys of the Land Cruiser Troop Carrier. That was in South Africa and the conclusion of that and many projects. Since that time I have had no connection or link with Toyota in any country. But I look back on it as one of the best experiences of my professional career. And it moved me from being solely interested in Land Rovers, to a life driving all kinds of 4WD. And, I have to admit, why I now drive a Toyota Land Cruiser. This is that story.

As a Toyota Prado Series 90 driver, I must say this is an utterly underrated vehicle. Definitely not as tough as a well maintained Series 80, but easier to drive and maintain. Definitely a badass too. Tougher than the later Series 120 and 150 for sure. In fact, the later versions had the D4d 163cv engine that combined good fuel economy and reliability; a class on her own for sure.

Andrew, '12 hilux owner myself, I wanna say I have watched all your vids twice +. I also own prado 120. And I used to have Pajero as a company car. I hope to get my hands on 70 series eventually but those come rare and tremendously expensive where I live. In any case, 5 + years with hilux, fully built and didn't have to change a "bulb".

Thanks again Mr White. It was watching you and Mr Dahl for the last few years that helped me decide on my vehicle. I have a 20 year old Prado that I purchased for an awesome price, and in the couple of years I've had it, it has never let me down. Have been to north Wales several times fartarsing about, and a long trip in the Pyrenees which was fantastic. It's just passed its MOT today with a couple of advisories, a great truck :-) Thank you again for all of your videos, I love them. Just a shame I'm stuck in Blighty with all its restrictions. Best of luck to you, keep them coming. Cheers

I don't care for many people whatsoever. I tend to be a tad difficult I suppose; which is why I'm glad Andrew isn't a cult leader or I'd be completely smitten. I could listen to this man for hours on end. I am a dedicated student. I can't wait to take his Masterclass. I've been blabbering on for 5 years about taking on a documentary type film. I have found both the inspiration and confidence to do that because of this man. Very few have the talent and skill to teach craft. Bravo, ASW!

Thank you mr. White! You're an awesome awesome guy.
p.s. On the side note, I've owned 5 Land Cruisers, and currently have two. One of which is a 120 Prado with 923 000 km's on the clock! I just know what you're talking about. I know! They truly are special. Indestructible, amazingly well put together, rugged, utterly capable and unstoppable machines. Nothing else comes near the level of a Land Cruiser. Nothing!
I truly have no idea why I haven't yet, but I am now subscribed indefinitely. Gonna start watching all of it. Thank you again.

Fantastic story, thank you for sharing. As far as your fuel consumption to George and back, my 2 cents worth having had a similar situation with a modified Volkswagen- cruising at 140km/h and above, you are in a rev range where the engine can make use of the flowed head, modified camshaft profile etc. and actually “breathe”. The increased power and subsequent improved efficiency require less throttle to do the same amount of “work”.

  • @Dan-go3jk

    Another great story Andrew
I had a similar experience on my 105 last year. The engine cut-out halfway to Broome, cranking beautifully, no fuel. Alas I'd blown a fuse (excessive current draw by relays on aftermarket D-Gas), tried to figure out where it was, but after 10 mins I ended up running a quick fuse and wire straight from the battery + to the injector pump, and kept on driving!!!
For a week or two we jumped out of the car, after turning off the key, to pull the temp fuse to stop the engine! Once back in Karratha, I was bothered enough to figure out the fuse location and replace.
The simplicity of the 1HZ really does give peace of mind.

The immobiliser failure is a well known issue on 1HZ 'cruisers in Australia as they age. The cheapest fix is to bypass the immobiliser when they fail... which I had done on my HZJ105 when it happened to me ... (The only people in Australia who drive Landrovers are ex Pat Poms or South Africans who do not know any better :) :) )

Because we all live in Europe and don't come here to often we didn't want to throw to much money. Therefore we ended up with the 90 series Prado with a 1-KZ and 5 speed manual. The fuel consumption of the 105 makes perfect sense. My '97 Cruiser (1KZ-T engine with an Intercooler added in front of the radiator and a chiptune)
    drinks 18 liters on 100km below 95 km/h, and 11-13 above it.
I have to be in Overdrive and keep the revs below 2000 to achieve that.

It's something about the deep love men have for their vehicles similar to the cowboy and his horse. It is the partnership that brings us through unforgiving terrain and gets us home safely I suppose. Andrew, I would like to share my experience with the 105 series. I have one with the 1FZ-FE engine (which is an excellent engine), but the fuel consumption is not that good as you said. My best average was 13.5L per 100km (7.4km per liter in Brazil's most used scale). That was before the front bumper with the winch, the snorkel and the roof rack.
Now, I usually got between 18 and 16 in the city, and something about 15 and 16 at the road. Despite the fuel consumption the car is just spectacular. My next upgrade will be the diesel engine swap, most likely the MWM 6.07 Sprint (I belive that some Ford F250 in South Africa came with that engine). Here in Brazil the Land Cruiser - exept the Prado - are extremely rare vehicles, that's one of the reasons I will not sell my car and buy another one with the 1HZ.
Thaks for sharing the video with your experience.
    Greetings from Brazil.

Inspiring story Andrew. My first contact with a Toyota was in 1968 when my father arrived home with a Toyota Stout (full import), a 1.5t 2l rear wheel drive truck with an exceptionally low first gear. This did duty as a 3T truck around the sugar plantations in Natal. Since then its been Corona's, Corolla's, Cressida, Lexus GS300, Prado 90 before a shortlived switch to a Land Rover Discovery 4 before my current 76 V8. I would buy another series 90 Prado in a blink if I could-the 76 was a nostalgic glance over my shoulder to my 18 year old 320,000km KZ-TE beastie. The 76 has a very rough ride after the 90 but is in a class of its own when one leaves the road with a heavy tow load.

I own a 2014 FJ Cruiser. I bought it because of its looks and 4x4 capabilities although I seldom go offload. The very first time I took it off the lot? Man was it comfy. The ride was soft and so comfortable. Going to the gas station for the first time I love it when someone comes up to you and tells you how much they admire your vehicle from a looks standpoint. My FJ gets a lot of attention at Garage Sales just sitting there in front of someones lawn looking all bad.
And so far after 5 years of ownership and finally owning it outright it has not had a single problem. Zero, Zip, Nada. Gas mileage is just acceptable at 20mpg but absolutely no problems or issues. With Toyota I've found that they get 95% of it right and you just have to deal with the 5% you don't like. Unlike Toyotas competitors who have to deal with the dreaded "death wobble" or "its not leaking oil its marking its territory" Toyotas only real vise is its thirst for fuel. And I remember Andrew that you test drove the FJ Cruiser and your opinion at the time was how much fun it was to drive the FJ Cruiser and I'll just have to whole heartedly agree.

I also had the fuel issue with the 1HZ 105. I bought the vehicle in Cape Town, drove it to Durban and the next night it would not start after driving for the day. I found that it would start when it cooled down but when it was warm, it wouldn’t. Took it to the mechanic and he said it was common with the Patrols and 100 series, either remove or replace the immobilizer unit.

I'm also a diesel mechanic. There was no need to jack up and turn the wheel. ..
After removing the glow plugs, you could just swing the motor over with the starter, and all water would have been ejected much quicker.
The motor wouldn't start of course, as without glow plugs, there's no compression.
Mind you, you were lucky you could get them out, as they can get pretty stuck, and break off. Then you're also stuck, as their hollow.
    Again no compression.

I've only had Daihatsu 4x4's for 30 years. Toyota had 1/3 of the company's shares until 1999...from then on it became a subsidiary of Toyota. Main Daihatsu real offroaders were the early F-20's Taft petrol with Toyota 12R 1600cc engine and, F-50/55 diesel with Daihatsu 2.5l and 2.8 l engines. Around 1983 came the Rocky/Fourtrack/Rugger with Toyota 3Y and 4y petrol engines, Daihatsu 2.8l Diesel engines including turbodiesels and in swb and lwb and other versions. A special and beautiful Rocky F-300 was developed mainly for US market and an Italian designer renamed the Rocky Bertone Freeclimber installing 3 types of BMW engines for the luxury European market. The other classic is the sporty Feroza with a Daihatsu 1.6 l 16 valve engines. All of them tough and reliable, which is what is needed when overlanding or heading to the wilderness. The Terios models are more of a soft offroader sold in some countries as Toyota Rush. Cheers and hope you check out this amazing and underrated japanese quality brand.

Great car. Next I got an Landcruiser 100 GX 4.2 l diesel. Adored it. Got a Hilux king cab 3l diesel and loved that also. Then I got a 2016 Landcruiser Prado 2.8 l ... I hated it. Exchanged her for a brand new 2019 Hilux 2.4l diesel. My last toyota. Now I drive a 2016 Defender 2.5 l diesel 110. Uncomfortable and quirky. But the inner child emerged in me and I am delighted with it. I went with my heart instead of my head this time.

I remember as co-founded the Land Cruiser club back in SA, Andrew having a minor forum spat with me when I pointed out that Land Rovers were excessively 'interesting, this was around 2003-2004'. His later run in with Mitsubishi over his unbridled honesty, was perhaps karma. Glad to see he's come around to the Toyota for overland travel. Anyway, Andrew's doing good work in the Antipodes and I rarely disagree with his advice and perspective. BF Goodrich appears to be a reasonable sponsor and are - arguably with Coopers - THE go to 4x4 tyre.

Listening to Andrew makes me wish I could get back to Australia for a visit, and wish we could get those rigs in the states. A friend has a Hilux that he got from Belgium while stationed in Germany. I've driven it once, across a river. He knew I liked to Off road and asked if I would like to drive it. Silly question, of course I would!

Re Fuel consumption, the Cruiser 105 with the FZ-FE 4.5 petrol, with a roof tent and Karrite roof carrier at the front of the rack - and this works as something of a wind break.... On a trip with lots of sand through Bechuanaland's central Kalahari Game Reserve, over a number of near identical 105 Cruisers and mine weighing in close to 4 tonnes with 3 on board, fully vitled we'd average around 21 litres per 100 km. This also involved highway driving at the legal maximum of 120 kph, or even a tad over. It's heavy consumption but with the Long Range Ausi Out of Town tank I had a total of 280 litres I had a range of 1,400 km and that straight 6 motor is bomb proof. On a normal trip we'd get around 20 l/100 km. With the roof rack off and a relatively light load - no packing system or water, on a long tar run, I'd get 19 l/100 km, sometimes a bit under.

Left foot braking is good stuff! I have been doing that since I saw my grandfather doing it when I was young. Then after I started flying airplanes the left and right foot technique picked up even more! Great vids I enjoy listening to you talk.

Another great story. I love my Plastic Fantastic (90 series), it is pretty, comfortable and has good off-road performance but it can't fill the hole in my heart left by my old HJ60. There are some 4x4s that just scream 'off road vehicle' The old Land Rovers are one and the Tojo 60 series is another.

I have only owned two Toyota Landcruiser Troopcarriers. Bought my first one in 1980, one of the first HJ47 2H Troopies into Australia. My son killed that one 17 or so years later. Bought another one soon after and have been driving that ever since. So I have owned Troopcarriers since 1980. Best all round truck ever.

I can relate to the Petrol 105 economy, mine was written off, and I had a week to burn half a tank of fuel, so being a teenager at the time, thought caning it would use it up. WRONG! Better fuel economy than towing 2 motorbikes up the freeway at 90km/h.
Now own a Diesel 105 and love it!

Hi Andrew. I couldn't write regarding your review of the Pajero (comments disabled) so am here on your Toyota slot, which is related!
I bought a commercial pajero(shogun) lwb this year in the UK, and apart from the rather disappointing fuel consumption it's a great vehicle , It will never be used in the desert, but sees much heavy towing, and doubtless muddy tracks and steep gradients on the farm. I thought your comments very relevant and fair. Still, it's an old school vehicle, and should it prove reliable, this will offset the very average fuel economy. Oh ,and the commercial doesn't have those speakers sticking out in the back that so annoyed you!
We have just bought a new Toyota Hilux for farm use. Initial performance suggest it is all the manufacurer claims it to be . Many thanks and keep up the great balanced reporting.

I have a 2016 Tundra and your dealing with your immobilizer reminds me of my dealing with the mechanic explaining a problem with parking sensors with video evidence and they said nothing was wrong. They needed to see the problem for themselves. 3hrs later I was proven correct and ripped the service department manager apart in public. Now I'm treated with respect and prompt service.

I have a 100 series myself. Like you said, my biggest (and really only) problem with it is the gas. And like you said, it’s almost counter intuitive when it comes to conservative driving. You might as well drive normally because you will NOT save gas. If you do, it’s minimal.
