JackFrags has really gone off the deep end, I can’t stay subbed to anymore because he’s fishing for views and shills for triple A games like no tomorrow, sad that’s what it’s come to.
Casuals don't want to play casual games. Kids want to play the competitive games where they can "get good", even though they always remain at a casual skill level.
As a casual, i hate, no, HATE every complex movement mechanic that exists today. They look cool until you run into a tryhard who trains every day to almost warp around the map abusing every movement mechanism. For me, the fun part of older shooters was that if I've killed someone, that usually happened because I've done better job at positioning, building situational awareness, e.t.c. The skill gap between casual and competitive players in hitting the enemy and avoiding enemy fire wasn't that big. And nowadays I feel like i have to train 6 hours every day to build my muscle memory in order to do something to a tryhard
this is so interesting to see because the Fighting Game community went through this years ago especially for like Street Fighter 5. E-Sports was pushed and the main focus and everyone hated it, now studios are adding a ton of casual content and the genre is thriving now and finally being noticed by non Fighting Game fans. game studio executives still and probs never will learn that chasing trends almost always fails.
Your explanation of og mw2 at 3:50 is the best explanation for why that game is so loved. It put in words why I haven't played many shooter since mw2, or at least that era of COD.
It feels like I would sleep in the middle of a match if I were to play og mw2 , I'm glad I can play the new games instead of these old games , I don't understand how people say og mw is better than the new cods, the news have better movement, system , guns , obviously I know sbmm and all... but still
@@pluto83w Idk about other people, but here's my opinion: SBMM/EOMM sucks. They're literally purposefully implementing an 'intermittent re-enforcement schedule' to addict players. Their systems give them total control over your experience. You no longer know whether or not you're good, and you no longer are rewarded for improving by doing better. Now they're feeding you a sequence of games meant to keep you playing as long as possible, and specifically to spend as much money as possible. They're pruposefully addicting you to their product, instead of just trying to make a good product. They're full of shit.
Honestly I like this topic that you're doing and I do think you have a point when it comes to developers making these games intentionally more competitive but I do think you're kinda underselling the audience that are playing these games. Yeah not EVERYONE is a try hard but I do think streamers, Esports scenes and people just wanting to be the best in general has had an even bigger impact than the actual developers. I believe they are just responding to many of the players. Idk just may take, I don't think there is much we can really do on our end.
Nothing is laid back anymore. Everything caters to ‘movement’ try hards who’d be happier playing valorant. The emphasis on competitive esports crowds has happened everywhere. I used to be a big RTS player and suddenly games shifted to trying to be competitive StarCraft and it ruined the genre.
5:15 THAT is it right there. I think the reason that we are seeing a shift has largely to do with the fact that fps games are inherently competitive (im using that in the general sense of the term, not referencing esports) and that lots of people see players better than themselves and think "i want to be that good!" That in mind, there are a couple of factors playing into things: 1. You can see the perspectives of the best players in the world online, meaning, A. Aspiration are higher and earlier, and B. These same creators teach you *how* to be better both by example and by written explaination. 2. Technological advancement has lead to a higher skill ceiling, with higher refresh rate, higher fov, MASSIVELY lower latency, etc. Competition is getting MORE competitive, and the barrier to entry into the competitive space is being lowered in the sense that it is less about the peripherals and more about YOU as the gap between budget and pro peripherals shrinks. Overall, I doubt we will see a proper "renaissance" for fps games, but we will almost certainly start seeing more games designed specifically for casuals as the players being catered towards naturally shifts due to a bloated market.
Let's not forget that Activision isn't really focused on what the player base wants anymore, they care about what the "data" says makes them the most money from spenders. Skill/Engagement Based Matchmaking has singlehandedly ruined the ecosystem of Call of Duty.
I droppes cod, battlefield and warzone in favour of games like doom, ultrakill and shadow warrior redux It revived my love for shooters that was extinguished for mamy years, you guys should try
I miss the battlefield premium. It was an extra $50/60 bucks but it made it so you could unlock almost everything in the game just by playing when and how you wanted. None of this battlepass where you have to pay money every few months and if you end up having to take time off from gaming youre just missing out on stuff. I felt hardline was the pinnacle of customization and getting your moneys worth for what i paid.
If i want a casual experience nowadays i got bot mods for like every cod up to bo4 have hundreds of hours with mixed difficulty bots. Best part is the fact that its always random. I will never give any other online mp pvp game a try due to low player counts only a month or 2 after launch. Unless it has a pve and bots mode to play..
I think its not just an issue with the developers only making comp shooters but also the gaming landscape as a whole back then online gaming was pretty new to the masses so alot of people didnt take it serious and only goofed off with friends or strangers but now its pretty much the norm and the average player for shooters have gotten alot better at video games so that sense of community is gone everyone is just off in a discord or party talking and instantly mute whoever is talking in game. People can create careers with being good at video games something that wasnt really looked into heavy back then and kinda was frowned upon but now anyone can make a youtube channel and make money just being good at the game nothing else needed. Its a bunch of factors involved but I dont think we're ever going to get a casual shooter back and even when the devs try to make that people will still try their best to make it comp or simply switch to a comp shooter and trash talk the other in hopes it fail just look at xdefiant.
I would say that a lot of studios do not see the need to make a casual approach mainstream because, at least in part, they deploy matchmaking to optimize time spent at the game. No need for somewhat randomized lobbies for casuals when the game will give and take enough to keep players engaged
Me personally as a content creator I want to bring back casual games because I do not want to be a try hard, I am a filthy casual who only plays like a try hard whenever my adrenaline gets going and whenever everyone else is trying to try hard on me. While I enjoy games where I can just pop off on people with insane movement, that’s just cause I like speed. I honestly wish to see a game that has fast base movement speed but doesn’t have all this complex shit that turns things competitive.
The hyperfocus from developers on eSports-style FPS games is precisely what drove me away from the genre. I feel like the games no longer cater to me at all as a casual player, and that the FPS genre as a whole has left me behind. Which is really sad, 'cos some of my fondest memories are from playing FPS games with my friends.
Battlefield feels like a shell of what it was but i still enjoy it more than any others, you can feel the devs trying but being crushed by ceos and shitty players complaining all the time.
@@deadmau56661 Yeah, the newer Battlefield games are the only ones that have even caught me eye. I've thought about trying them a few times. BF3 was my favorite FPS of all time, so if they retain even a hint of that, they'd be good I imagine.

Why do people want to turn their games into arena shooters so badly? They should ask a Quake player where this road leads to.
