I've had a similar issue with my wife's car; it was that there was a short in the wiring system because it was contacting a metal strut over the engine. I simply forgot to plug the wiring holder back into the support and it swung loose and made contact. @@rudi_ghuliani to each their own my friend. My project car dream would be a Mitsubishi Evo IX, and my first order of business would be to see if I could find an 4B11T to swap in, given that, being an aluminum block engine they are much more thermally efficient than the Iron Block 4G63T that powered every iteration of the Evo up to the IX.
On a track that "shouldn't be a very big breaking track" it sounds like the main thing that would reduce lap time is more power. Almost all mods made to the car made it heavier and didn't add power. The car may feel better, be more planted, and be more fun to drive with all the chassis stiffening and suspension tuning... But unless you're able to translate that to significant gains in cornering speeds (to make up for the slower acceleration due to increases weight) you've probably made the car slower, at least for this particular track (Willow Springs). To significantly reduce a hot lap time on a budget = Become a better diver (that alone might get you in the minute 30's) + sticky tires + turbo. Sure, chassis flex, body roll, and a bouncy suspension will be a pain to deal with and you'll be always on the edge of spinning out on every corner. It will probably take a few attempts to get that good lap time without spinning out. The car will still have it's over heating issue so you'll need to go on a cooler day and take breaks between hot laps. If you were building a car that can reliably and consistently put down fast lap times during a full track day/race then ya, you'll want to invest in those other things especially getting some more cooling.
exactly, probably the turbo + slicks would do way more than all of these upgrades, those could work on a really technical low speeds track with lots of weights shifting in sharp turns; also imagine spending 10000$ worth of upgrades and not be able to finish one fast lap, poor Zach
@@Davesky_1 the turbo kits available for the Miata only boost ~10lbs (otherwise you'd need a rebuild of the B6 engine - 1.6l that comes with his Miata as well as standalone engine management system, and bigger injectors). If he were to get a (BPT 1.8L DOHC) and swap it out - pretty easy to do with a Miata, just a little fabrication for the exhaust and stock engine harness rewire - would get you stock 180hp @7lb boost with the BP26 ecu, which can then be brought up to about 280hp @ 14lb boost if you replace the little ihi turbo and replace the ecu with megasquirt and the flap based air flow meter can be swapped to the afm from a Mazda KLDE 2.5L v6 (found in MX-6's, and Ford Probes of the same era). No engine rework required.

Possibly lucky because without upgraded brakes you can get yourself into trouble if you actually upgrade the power on an NA Miata much. They're like 10" brakes.
Those manual reset fuses are the way to go for your fuses that keep popping. I got me a couple of them. All you need to do is, reach down and slide the tab over to reset them. One fuse and no more throwing away them when they pop, only to keep putting a new one in there.

Great video i love the "money pit" idea.. I think many of us can relate to a few money pits in our time. Would like to see more.. ALSO i would like to see this Miata revisited once the gauge issue is fixed and cooling as well
Coolant temp sensors run through the coolant passage. Unplugging the sensor would just piss coolant everywhere. The best at track solution would have been drilling holes in the sensor to let the coolant flow better.
the fan doesn't help with cooling at speed though, the airflow from the movement of the car overpowers it even if it was on, it's just there to keep the engine cool when standing still.
20 Amps at 12 volts is 240 wats that is A LOT. Thats like ~0.33 horsepower of just heat generation. Half of that can easly put the electronics on fire.
It was pretty dumb. Just like driving at a track with your head sticking out above the roll bar. They should do an episode for properly fitting a taller person in a Miata too.

Zach: (puts car in fifth instead of third) "Is that fifth?? I've never done something so silly....." Also Zach: (Forgets to put the ebrake on/put miata in gear when lowing it off jackstands causing it to almost roll him over...)
Honestly tho. I was thinking he was gonna just drive like 40 or 50mph max around the track to get like, one last feel for it, and not overheat his car. But nah, this boi really meant “I’m gonna do a almost race lap, and then I’ll fly through into the actual lap”
The answer is absolutely yes. Those $30-$80 gauges at autozone will not last past the 6 month warranty, but the hks ones that were put in my skyline 20 years ago by the previous owner still works accurately.
Great effort! This is the essence of car racing. Making a reliable race car is tough. There might be a harness problem that causes a short circuit under certain vibrations / g forces. This will require a lot of patience to pinpoint… Just… please don’t have unrealistic expectations about the laptime gain. Beating that record laptime, even if it was set on a stock miata, is a great accomplishment that may require lots and lots of training laps on that circuit, definitely better brakes, and lots of wasted brake pads / tire sets. Don't expect any mod (that is reasonably safe) to bring you at the 1:30 range automatically.
Agreed. Bummer he couldn't have done a lap with a stock Miata and then compared against it. Even making it five seconds within the range of the record would probably take some serious driving.
Sunfire Boy Not really. The miata engine was built for boost. The miata just came N/A. I can't remember the car but there was a car that came factory with the miata engine but boosted. I believe they can handle ~10psi stock internals.
General rule is above 250wtq need rods then above 300wtq need pistons. Sure it's not a must but, it is for longevity. Tracked mine for years boosted without issue. To be fair I wasnt anywhere close to 250wtq, then I was closer to 210hp/170tq.

I love that track. I use to race my Acura NSX’s there. The best thing about this track is it has No guard rails. Miss a corner and go shooting off any of the corners and it was all dirt!! This no guard rails let you know where your limits were. You could go shooting into a corner and if you were a bit to fast. You just went back cleaned the dirt, rock & debris out from your under-Carriage. Go back out. Fun place to play back in the mid to late 90’s & early 2000’s I had 3 NSX’s back then. They were really fun cars. I always want to have them super charged or Turbo charge. The DMV laws of the time you could not get them registered for street. I daily drove these cars.

BOYGENIUS538 _ the NSX was only right around 70K back then. Plus tax & licensing. That’s not that much money back then. You could buy a corvette for close to the same price. The only reason I didn’t have a vette was because there was one on every corner. You very rarely saw an Acura . And every wondered what you were driving? There was a video game back then. I think it was “Grand theft Auto” I’ve been told the NSX was in that game. I’m not really sure. I’ve never played video games.. Answer to your question No I’m not Rich!!!!

My project car dream would be a Mitsubishi Evo IX, and my first order of business would be to see if I could find an 4B11T to swap in, given that, being an aluminum block engine they are much more thermally efficient than the Iron Block 4G63T that powered every iteration of the Evo up to the IX.
Try a new alternator. My civic would pop a fuse when I went too high in the RPM.
Cheaper to just change the voltage regulator.....;-)
What Civic?
No engine rework required.
more power isn't going to help much if the car overheats, and it won't do anything if the car can't handle the extra power
actually more power isn't going to help at all if the car is all loose, zach made all the upgrades necessary to hold more power but is running on original specs. Damn even a remap could do the trick, but then again, everybody wants to slap a turbo an go to the track
Im pretty sure its still his daily he just wants it "reliable" and fun to drive

I’m so sorry man. That sucks! I have my first track day in 11 years coming this coming Tuesday in my 95. I hope you enjoy your vacation. You guys have really helped keep my spirits up throughout this whole pandemic. Thanks for that. God bless.
Bro the edit at like 7:25 where they show the recent video of "are cooling upgrades worth it" with that stamp of a yes over it, has me dying 😂😂
And 5M views in 5 hours

5:09, the correct fix is to devise a mechanical magazine of fuses to autoload when they pop.
They're in California, magazine restrictions wouldn't allow for that assault fuse.
R Babik is right. Cali doesn’t allow high capacity mags for assault fuses. Especially fully semi-automatic ones
use an auto reset breaker, that will work until it doesn't, and then it will work again, until it doesn't
The correct fix would've been to finish the lap without them.
Actually a judge just lifted the ban on assault fuses of 10 or more
Finally! Some good footage of the radio in the sun, and you can't read the screen.
That's something I've been wondering since you did the radio upgrade video. When I upgraded my radio I ruled out LCD screens because seeing the radio in a convertible means direct sunlight, which I didn't think would be readable. And now I know I was probably right.
Boi be like : "We upgraded everything except for the cooling"
Miata : overheats
Boi : *surprised pikachu face*
Edit : wow I got more than 1k likes in 24h! Glad you appreciate this, I never got so many likes ever for a youtube comment!
Hahahahah
Possibly lucky because without upgraded brakes you can get yourself into trouble if you actually upgrade the power on an NA Miata much. They're like 10" brakes.
Actually laughed out loud

Those manual reset fuses are the way to go for your fuses that keep popping. I got me a couple of them. All you need to do is, reach down and slide the tab over to reset them. One fuse and no more throwing away them when they pop, only to keep putting a new one in there.
It was so heart breaking to see the "blue eyed devil" so disappointed!!! Don’t beat yourself up buddy, you are doing a gr8 job on the Miata😌😌😌😊!!!

So I don’t remember you adding in your steering wheel to your list of mods. This car has easily over 10k in mods in it now. It’s a 12,500 Miata! That’s badass!!

When I say this I really am trying to not take away from how much I like this miata, but damn man. For $10,000 I'd have a hard time being jazzed about a miata.
pretty normal for getting a car track prepped, often even more than that.
@@Patrick94GSR Yep great point! I'd say this isn't even fully track prepped at the point it's at currently.
Any track car is going to cost at least that much.
Not going to lie, havent seen a clean rust free (i live up north) miata for under 10 grand in awhile...damn drift tax.
Don't forget they used new parts and pricing - with a cult car like the miata you could almost definitely find the majority of the components they used on craigslist for a fraction of the MSRP
It’s rad how the roll bar sits about 6” lower than the top of your helmet.

Y’all are brutal, he’s fixing up an ancient car and you’re all complaining. I’ve spent a couple of years driving for Lyft only and if I had taken better care of my civic, I’d still have it. Keep doing what you’re doing, looking forward to how you fix the fuses, wiring, cooling, brakes, and upgrading the engine too
Took about $10k worth of stuff to build my car into a crawler, and every penny was worth it and required. Still building too!
Great video i love the "money pit" idea..
I think many of us can relate to a few money pits in our time.
Would like to see more.. ALSO i would like to see this Miata revisited once the gauge issue is fixed and cooling as well
I would’ve said YOLO and just unplugged the Coolant temp sensor so the cooling fan runs on high 24/7
Coolant temp sensors run through the coolant passage. Unplugging the sensor would just piss coolant everywhere. The best at track solution would have been drilling holes in the sensor to let the coolant flow better.
@@Pheatan u can mess with the fans fuse and make it go on at all times
the fan doesn't help with cooling at speed though, the airflow from the movement of the car overpowers it even if it was on, it's just there to keep the engine cool when standing still.
THIS WHOLE CHANNEL IS RETARDED
its even worse than that tho, because with the car running it would have been around 14.8v with the alternator....
It's probably a short to ground somewhere in a harness. I sure hope it's not all going into the cluster!
Zach: putting bigger fuses in isn’t the right solution.
Me: that’s what pennies are for!

Every experience is a learning experience in however you build/upgrade your car for any fashion. In this case, I think, everyone can benefit from this. I mean, thats the whole point of the show, right? I know I've learned a lot and I appreciate you guys for doing what you do. I've saved a lot of money on my personal "money pit" doing it myself and wouldn't have had the confidence to do so if it weren't for you. Hats off to you guys! Looking forward to see what's next for the Money Miata.

“Imma throw a soft lap then punch it” proceed to have the car drive at 5000+ rpms
Honestly tho. I was thinking he was gonna just drive like 40 or 50mph max around the track to get like, one last feel for it, and not overheat his car. But nah, this boi really meant “I’m gonna do a almost race lap, and then I’ll fly through into the actual lap”
I had a heart attack when I saw the tachometer sh*t itself loll
Can't overheat it if the gauge stays on cold. :>

It was soo funny to hear the fart noises and him just trying but I truly understand the frustration. Great vid guys!
Zack: *redlines it hard and raises the engine temp*
Gauges: *aight ima head out*
Next video idea:
Are HKS, APEXi, Defi and expensive branded gauges better than their knock-off counterparts?
Does more expensive mean more better?
The answer is absolutely yes. Those $30-$80 gauges at autozone will not last past the 6 month warranty, but the hks ones that were put in my skyline 20 years ago by the previous owner still works accurately.
Defi definitely
Great effort! This is the essence of car racing. Making a reliable race car is tough.
There might be a harness problem that causes a short circuit under certain vibrations / g forces. This will require a lot of patience to pinpoint…
Just… please don’t have unrealistic expectations about the laptime gain.

Money pit is definitely the best series on donut just waiting for the turbski
You gotta forge at least the pistons before you can run boost
Needs spinny things.
Sunfire Boy Not really. The miata engine was built for boost. The miata just came N/A. I can't remember the car but there was a car that came factory with the miata engine but boosted. I believe they can handle ~10psi stock internals.
YEA, BUT THIS WHOLE CHANNEL IS TRASH!!!!

Fun place to play back in the mid to late 90’s & early 2000’s
I had 3 NSX’s back then. They were really fun cars.
I always want to have them super charged or Turbo charge.
The DMV laws of the time you could not get them registered for street. I daily drove these cars.
Damn you rich
What kind of cars are you into these days? Have you tried the latest generation NSX on the track?
One time I got a 1:46 on my bicycle, had to take the training wheels off for that one
Instead Of Mayo not on the track no I have not.
I just have a daily driver now. I’ve had a very hard last 10 years. I’ve had 5 major heart attacks. I had a very bad motor cycle accident. I blew my front tire on my Hayabusa. That put me through a guardrail post. Broke everything from my hips up. Last year I had emergency corroded artery surgery. About10 weeks ago I had a mild stroke.
At 70 I’ve slowed down a bit.
🤪 👍
The good side of all this?
I’m still alive!!!!!!
