Several concerns here: 1: A lot of tracks will not let you on track with a 4 point harness, due to the risk of submarining. You are better off using aftermarket seats with stock seat belt. 2: With sliders, and a 2 part bracket there is no way you pass the broomstick test (especially with a helmet). Another thing that most tracks look for and will not let you on track. If you flip, your roll bar will not save you. You need a dropped floor pan and the lowest profile bracket, if you want sliders. 3: If you want to street drive a 4 point harness (which people do) you need DOT approved harness with anti-submarining loop in one of the shoulder straps. That way you don't get whiplash during an accident.
Thought there'd be more comments like this tbh. You're not wrong, stock belt is way easier when you are just using the car everyday too, you can bolt it behind the fixing eyelet so can have both the stock belt and harnesses installed. Biggest risk with harnesses is basal skull fracture in a head on, which is more likely on the road, no harness should really be used without a HANS, unless of course it has a break away section on one strap to help decelerate you (but then you can't use a HANS with that which for the £100 extra is totally worth it for when you are on track)

Zach, your videos about these subjects are the best. They are a good honest look thart covers a lot of the questions begginers and novices have about these things. Thanks for all the great shit.
A 4 point harness is great for the track but horrible for daily driving. I had one and drove one day before removing it. You never realize how much you need to move around to reach for stuff like the release for the trunk, fuel door, hood, stuff on the floor, glove compartment, etc etc etc. It makes you realize why a shoulder harness with an inertia reel is such a nice thing to have.
thanks for speaking on head and neck safety with harnesses. Alot of us are only using our cars on the street and not track but still want race style seats. I think the dangers of using a harness with out head/neck restraint is largely unknown by many of us, especially those that are new to the car community.
@@denisg2719 don't let the myth fool you, stickers don't do much by themselves. But stickers paired with fake vents is how you make a shit ton of power.
Thank you for addressing HANS devices. Have gotten in a bunch of arguments with guys that drive around the street all day with a 4 point and an aftermarket steering wheel with no airbag thinking it is safer than a traditional belt and airbag.
The Hans Device - Named after Hans Gruber who tragically fell to his death from the Nagasaki Tower, breaking his neck on impact. Edit: Nakatomi Plaza (thanks to my Haydon G)
Can't remember if I said this before but thank you for stressing the importance of neck protection and properly setting up harnesses. I've had to warn so many people about the dangers of running harnesses alone in a street car.
Very fun to watch the Miata become a strace car as I like to call it. Road car that’s track ready. The Alfa Giulia GTA and GT3RS formula. Doing the same thing with my 2019 Mustang GT. 4 point roll bar and rear seat delete paired with OMP Champ R and Amerex Halotron extinguisher mounted to the passenger seat.
Question: How do you pick your track certified seats based on comfort? Safety is cool and all but I intend to put allot of hours into cruising streets and long roadtrips. I only want to hit the track on rare occasion and want my "1980 rally sport camaro" to be a street car first. Edit, thanks for the money pit series. I've learned so much from this particular series on all the dos and don'ts for my upgrades. I am especially thankful for your roll bar video as there is little information on the web for roll bars in convertibles. My intention is to mod my camaro to a hidden hard top convertible :D
Well, the only real possibility would be to go to a dealer and try them out. Thats what I did when I picked the seat for my sim and I can tell you, it really is worth the time. Seating position is really important with these kind of seats, if you aren't sitting correctly you can get really bad back pain, especially over longer periods of time. Also, based on the research I did when I bought my seat as well as the experience of my cousin, I would reconsider the idea of putting a bucket seat into a street car. With a lot of them you cant use the stock seatbelts anymore because of the belt guiding and 4-, 5- and 6-point harnesses are not practical on the road either. They need to be mounted in a specific way as to not risk injury (as partly mentioned in the video) and also need to be very tight, whicht makes looking over your shoulder and reversing without just mirrors next to impossible.
Get the right seats die the track, and just install them for track work, and stick with standards seats for the road. I have a race car I drive to the track and don’t use otherwise, and even driving an hour there/back in a proper race seat is pretty horrible.
Ok, I hear what you're saying. But then I'd need to have a quick and easy way to change the seats as spending 6 hours for seats every time I want to hit the track will just make me never want to hit the track 😅. Surely there exists a market for people like me and surely there's a brand catering to my niche. Like I'm talking about a racing seat designed to accommodate a standard 3point harness aswell as allow for shoulder checks and padding for comfort. Obviously I'd be sacrificing safety but assuming it still meets track regulations then it's probably still pretty safe off and on the track.
I doubt it would take 6 hours to change the seats, you could get an additional pair of sliders and mount them on the racing seat (with the sidemount if you need one obviously). That way you could just take the stock seat on its sliders out and pop the race seat in. Depending on your car and how easy it is to get to the screws I could see that happening in less than 20 minutes. That being said, there are "racey" seats for road cars. They're not full blown bucket seats but should provide better support compared to (most) stock seats while still being comfortable. Recaro's "Dynamic" seat range or OMP's "Style", "Design 2" or "Strada" are the ones I could find quickly.
I have an NA Miata just like Zach and seats for the Miata are a really big issue. Because the NA cockpit is so small and cramped there is really only a handful of seats that work, so that was the biggest factor for my Miata. To be honest I am shocked he got the seats in with the door bars. The best bet is to ask to sit in some seats of your friends and sit in them for at least 10 minutes. See which seats are tight and snug and which ones are more loose. The mounting is also a big obstacle. While Zach is running into a broomstick issue (especially with a helmet) because of the seat mounts +slider +side mounts he has the seat way too high above the floor pan for a car like the NA you would want low profile floor mounts, no rails, and height adjustable side mounts to get you as low as possible. I say all this because as the height changes on your seat the driving position will change in coordination to your steering wheel and it may become fatiguing after a while. And lastly with your side mounts you will want to pick ones that allow for recline. Most fixed back racing seats have an almost 100 degree recline which is extremely upright and will cause back pain within minutes, so even just a 15 degree additional recline will be so much more comfortable. (never use bottom mounts because then you can't recline with a fixed back bucket). So there is a lot to consider when you change out the seats. If street driving is really what you want, but you also want a little razzle dazzle in the interior, I would suggest purchasing a reclining racing seat and not a bucket seat (like what Zach and I have) They are way more comfortable but offer less bolstering. Which in your case sounds like fair trade off for a most street driven car. Just be sure to do lot's of research because any seat change will feel completely different and take some getting used to.
Before taking out the seats disconnect the battery, I heard that you can active the air bags by removing the seats. On a E46?? (Don't know if this is 100% true, saw it in a UA-cam video)
Yeah. Any time you're disconnecting ANY SRS connectors its a good idea to kill power. Its one of those things, I'm quite certain the airbag wont deploy....but I'm still going to not take any chances.
If that's the case, then would it be the same as changing the steering wheel? For example, would you leave the car disconnected for a while incase there is some capacitance?
As has been touched on, if you are installing a harness in your car, here is what I would recommend: 1. Leave the stock belts in. These are much safer to use on the street (assuming you aren't wearing a helmet and HANS device while driving around on the street). They already have built in protection for submarining and neck-snapping due to the single shoulder belt. 2. For track days, use a 6 point harness + HANS device. Yes, 6 point harness NOT 5 point, your nuts will thank you. Then you will have protection against submarining and neck-snapping when wearing the proper safety equipment. 3. Make sure you pass broomstick with your helmet on. Tracks will not let you on if you do not pass this test. Unfortunately for a lot of tall people, this basically rules out Miatas entirely unless you bolt your seat directly to the floor. I would not recommend a 4 point harness for any use case and I am a little surprised that they are still sold by OMP. Here is a great thread on Miataturbo.net (the only Miata forum worth a shit) about track safety equipment: www.miataturbo.net/race-prep-75/hpde-track-day-safety-gear-flow-chart-87229/
I love how the car is turning out and I want to get one so bad, but being 16 with no job yet it’s just a little hard but I hope to go out and get one for myself soon. I can’t wait to watch any other videos on whatever else you add next
I like how he enphasizes the position of the Seatbelt holes in the seats, due to height - and even tells you how the belts should go. But then when he finishes the way he did, the belts actually connect to the rollbar too low, and would compress his spine in case of collision due to them angle of the belts behind the seat.
A more supportive seat is a big plus. I would get huge knee bruises bracing g-force through turns at track days (my car does over 1G laterally without slicks, so it was an issue). I added a rubber netting on my leather seats to stop some of the movement, but that was a cheap fix, but not support. But keeping my interior stock is important to me - for a 24 yo car, it is still pretty pristine.
I'm glad you covered the hans device. You don't really want a 4 point harness in your street car. Not to mention that you might lose your side airbag on some cars by swapping the seats.
I used to run a 96 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham HARD AS F daily. I was always having to hold myself in the driver seat. My right hand slid in between the two front seats and firmly gripping the driver seat frame. I crushed the left door panel doin a hard right handed one day so the switchboard for the windows and seats would always fall in... Good times :)
The HANS you demonstrated will only protect your neck from forward collisions. This HANS is designed for use in race cars that typically have side bolstering around the helmet. Your seats don’t have this bolstering (which is good on a road car, because it helps with visibility!). However, this means you need a Hybrid HANS e.g. from Simpson. That will also limit your helmets range of movement laterally. A crash very rarely is perfectly head-on, it will always contain some lateral component! Protect your neck on the track with the right equipment :)

I hope so lol, I don't know if the track he's trying to go to let's people run topless. I think most require you to have one.
I want to say yes, for personal reasons, but I keep thinking its a no.

I’m having a hard time deciding what more interesting, the series of the Miata or how luscious Zack’s hair is.
When I bought my new truck: It's nice not to have to work on it.
When I watch Donut: I need a money pit.
When I bought my first truck, a 2002 dodge dakota: OH boy, I cant wait to aork on it lol
At least newer cars are nicer to work on, besides some of the bullshit where they make it so you can't work on stuff yourself. I'm always excited to work on my old jeep but it legit always has some issue, old stuff breaks, things don't work as expected, can be such a headache lol.
Legend has it, if you are early, donut will heart your comment👀

Well damn.
oh damn.
Zach, your videos about these subjects are the best. They are a good honest look thart covers a lot of the questions begginers and novices have about these things. Thanks for all the great shit.

We need a running tally on the total cost of money pit Miata
Performance mods got up to about 9500, radio 300, paint correction 130, so currently around 9830
i would make this car soooo bad tbh :DD but it costs a lot 😳☹️
A 4 point harness is great for the track but horrible for daily driving. I had one and drove one day before removing it. You never realize how much you need to move around to reach for stuff like the release for the trunk, fuel door, hood, stuff on the floor, glove compartment, etc etc etc. It makes you realize why a shoulder harness with an inertia reel is such a nice thing to have.
Take the RV on the track, I think everyone here would love to see that

New York actually
the 350z chase scene was shot there
Most of it was shot in L.A.
That's misleading, most of it was actually filmed in Tokyo which is mostly illegal, but it was still done anyways. Look it up

thanks for speaking on head and neck safety with harnesses. Alot of us are only using our cars on the street and not track but still want race style seats. I think the dangers of using a harness with out head/neck restraint is largely unknown by many of us, especially those that are new to the car community.
I swear I thought he was going to stall his car today.

Thank you for addressing HANS devices. Have gotten in a bunch of arguments with guys that drive around the street all day with a 4 point and an aftermarket steering wheel with no airbag thinking it is safer than a traditional belt and airbag.
The Hans Device - Named after Hans Gruber who tragically fell to his death from the Nagasaki Tower, breaking his neck on impact.

i think it’d be cool if he builds the engine and makes some decent miata power like 300-350whp
Can't remember if I said this before but thank you for stressing the importance of neck protection and properly setting up harnesses. I've had to warn so many people about the dangers of running harnesses alone in a street car.

Giving up the speakers in the headrest? Questionable decision.
I’m asking myself that now. Buckets or new speakers for my headrest :/
There needs to be a "Big Boy" edition to this for those of us who aren't 6 foot plus and svelte! ;)
This guy has so much attention to detail and his work. After making a notch for the side mount, he even painted it!!!
@@jackflynnstone7698 yeah you disconnect it for the wheel too
I’m pretty sure a 1 seat generation Miata doesn’t have seat airbags

I appreciate that you talked about the whole neck snapping thing. People don’t think about that!!!
Those stock seats have been sticking out, like a used bandaid in a swimming pool for so long, thank god they're gone.
Yesss finally I’ve been asking for this
So glad you got a hans with the harnesses. Using a hans is essential and too many people overlook it’s importance.
I wish someone touched me the way Zach Jobe touches his seats
Bruh finally, those old seats were RAGGEDY
As has been touched on, if you are installing a harness in your car, here is what I would recommend:

I found a bunch of harnesses and buckles in my step-dad's trailer, they worked great in my car.
Just to point out you didn’t do a test ride today man😢
Probably saved it for the track
I like how he enphasizes the position of the Seatbelt holes in the seats, due to height - and even tells you how the belts should go. But then when he finishes the way he did, the belts actually connect to the rollbar too low, and would compress his spine in case of collision due to them angle of the belts behind the seat.
Camber?? Or adjustable suspension if you haven’t done so already.
When you open up UA-cam and it says uploaded 17 seconds ago 😂😂
I love how the neck snapping sound effects subtly makes me also want that device for your neck if I ever track a car

I was LITERALLY thinking about this 2 hours ago...
Whenever someone says, "and it should be a breeze to install" those are keywords that mean it will be "extremely difficult and annoying" when I do it.

@@AndrewBrowner I trusted him 😭
The HANS you demonstrated will only protect your neck from forward collisions.
