I think one of the coolest things about the Cadillac Sixteen was that the engineers designed it to drop to eight cylinders under moderate load and four cylinder under light load. Power when you need it, fuel efficiency when you don't.
That didn’t work out with so many cars bro the Honda VCM was such an issue that most people opted for a workaround half the time the cylinders wouldn’t be working didn’t know what to do Cadillac also had this issue on old 80s 70s cars.
@@BayAreaMike99 And yet, this is something that newer Aston Martins, newer Dodge Charger/Challengers, and other have done successfully. Cylinder deactivation may have been a problem in the past, but those problems have been worked out because it was a technology worth spending that money developing.
Cylinder deactivation is rarely a good idea. You’re still dragging the dead weight of the pistons around. It works on ships where you deactivate entire engines, but it’s not really efficient to have sleeping pistons flopping around using up energy.
@@Ashfielder it's not that bad if the engine has more tolerance for less friction and lighter weight synthetic oils like the modern engines. It's still dead weight though. It's still great tech for fuel efficiency just like turbo charged with a eco tune. Compared to a supercharger with a eco tune. Ones obviously still better and worth developing money into.
Cadillac built engines with cylinder deactivation way back in the early 80's with the V8-6-4 engine. Obviously they quickly dropped the idea after the electronics were unreliable

I think the confusion comes from this probably being a thing that Ford Europe, specifically Ford Germany did. Ford Europe is almost entirely separate from Ford USA in philosophy, model range etc. And I'm saying this because it looks a hell of a lot like a retro hommage to the German Ford/Taunus P6 from the mid-60s. (For a good chunk of the 60s Ford was branded as "Taunus" in Germany because WW2)
It makes so much sense that this was done by Ford Germany. My first thought was that it looked like a Trabant refresh from an alternate universe where East Germany still existed in the 21st century. Also, I didn’t know that Ford used to be called “Taunus” in Germany. I wonder if it had to do with the US presence in Wiesbaden post-war. I’m not from Germany, but I used to stay in Frankfurt (Oma lived in Wiesbaden) and I walked around in the Taunus mountains all the time.
@@Odo_Fraggins No, "Taunus" was just the model name of the main passenger car the factory in Cologne was producing before Germany started the war and then again in IIRC 1948 when passenger cars were allowed to be manufactured in Germany again.
My brother was working at Chrysler up until the financial crash, and the Imperial was absolutely green-lit for production. However, it was one of the many casualties that got cancelled when they fell on hard times and new ownership took over. They were also working on little RWD sports car based off the Dodge Viper platform, but it was going to use a turbo-4 or a V6 instead. It was going to replace the Crossfire (which were just re-badged Mercedes with Chrysler styling). It would've been cool to see either of those being built, because I fucking hate "crossovers" and SUVs. They're all just station wagons that are somehow less cool than actual station wagons, and neither those, nor pickup trucks really deserve to exist in the format they do--because any pickup truck that has more than 2 -seats and a full length bed isn't a truck anymore. It's a sub-compact vehicle with horrible mileage and a beyond ridiculous center of gravity. Edit: I just reached the part of the video where they showed off the Dodge Demon that almost was, but that was the RWD sports car I was talking about. Chrysler at that time was putting out a lot of concept cars that ended up being really hot selling cars, so they were planning to build a lot of them before the economy went tits-up.
I've never seen the Pontiac Stinger before and that thing FUCKING RULES I mean it's a silly car that should never have been put into production, from a business standpoint. But I want one.
Honestly the Stinger is like a combination of Miata and beach buggy with room for 4... Maybe it wouldn't have been as "pure" of a driving experience as the Miata, but it would've been plenty fun in its own unique way. They should've built it.
I've been a fan of the Stinger since the first time I saw it in a magazine in the 90s. There is so much cool in the concept that isn't covered in this video (basically every possible spot to hide some tool, or function, or whatever - was used. I'm sure none would have made it to production, but the concept was very very cool, and if I had stupid amounts of money to resurrect a concept car into production, this would easily be in my top 5 shortlist.
Yeah definitely has that beach buggy look. I could definitely see a market for it, especially if there were 3 or 4 different models/varieties: beach, mountain, street/sport casual (the tuner)...and uh...farmer?(Practical utility)
@@bowwing333 the first gen Rav4 was five years later and it kind of redefined the "small sporty 4x4" at the time. It's not hard to imagine the Stinger doing it a few years earlier

@@strictlydiesel8305 Are you living under a rock lately?
@@jjosa52 they're developing it, but it isn't in a production car as of yet unless I've missed something
@@strictlydiesel8305 You're correct the Bugatti Tourbillon isn't yet in production but it's in final prototype gate.
The Bugatti uses a W16, which I assume is much easier to build and fit in a car. Cadillac also doesn’t sell in as high priced a market. Bugatti can make a 16 cylinder for $2.5 million, but Cadillac wouldn’t sell anything at that price
We all need a Bob in our life
The 2023 Toyota S-FR has one more gaping problem.
It's absolutely hiDEoUS.
14:25 1999 Ford 21C is incredible. So different and I would totally buy it hands down. That thing looks amazing and very special. I would definitely rather get something so different and unique than something else everyone has BUT you should’ve shown him the avatar car!!! It’s fking siiickkkk

Bob is incredible. He's like if one of the Animaniacs was also a genius.
We need a second part with some euro concepts like the Opel Manta, the Seat Bolero and Cupra GT, the Peugeot Quasar, Oxia, SR1 or Onyx...
I'd love to see Bob judging some "obscure" concept cars, like the 2010 Rossin-Bertin Vorax.
"There's no way you can make a V16 now, there's no way"
Meanwhile, Bugatti:
6:04 rofl, that Bob scream
Bob just has fun. And because of that I have fun watching him. More bob please!
I cant read HRSPRS without saying “ hursepursss “ 😂😂
Just based on the title alone, I already love the premise!

I had so many toy versions of the Copperhead, you're telling me they never made the car?

22:02 wooow didnt expect that
I've never seen the Pontiac Stinger before and that thing FUCKING RULES
I mean it's a silly car that should never have been put into production, from a business standpoint.

We need a Sandro and Bob episode, i know this ain't a comedy channel and it might not absolutely destroy the algorithm, but you got like 10 views of a 20-30 minute episode in its entirety. Absolutely love the realism yet absurd characters yall portray
