He's not the only one 😄 Slow car fast and all that, I'll take an MX-5 over a Lamborghini every single time, at least in terms of pure driving enjoyment.
He's not the only one, a good friend of mine is an instructor for the supercar experience drives as well as working at an exotic car dealer and he races and loves Miatas
Having a mostly stock NA, and always thinking "awe man how are these other miatas so much more powerful and crazy", it makes me feel better knowing both of those last cars have well over 30k invested in them haha. Awesome video!
Not to worry, 30k isn't needed for a little bit extra out of the mx5. Ideally supercharger and fitting would be the best and it would only set you back 6k ish. Failing that, ebay turbo and fitting and a map would set you back about 3/4 and get you to 250ish bhp
Great video! Really shows the fun you get out of these. I had no interest in MX-5s until around 3 years ago when my subscribers chose it as my next project car... Now I can't find another car that puts as big a smile on my face (particularly after supercharging it like the one in this vid!)
Loved the handling on my RX-8, until a drunk driver hit me & totaled it 😢 Had a friend with a Nissan Z - complete opposite, gobs of power chore to drive, take the Mazda anyday.
I really like the 200hp one! It's got the extra power and that awesome supercharger whine, but also manages to look like you might actually want to drive it on the road. I also prefer the mostly stock appearance it has, but that's purely subjective.
My Uncle Gary raced Spec Miata here in The States and not out boy, were those cars FUN! He let me borrow one of the retired cars to run at a track day and no one could keep up with me, not when the dude in the new Porsche 911. The only guy who was close to my runs was driving an LS swapped FD3 RX-7(sacrilege, I know!). That little MX-5 was incredible through the corners and in braking, but sucked on the straight aways. Keeping momentum was key and that meant I could brake later, maintain speed my speed and get on the accelerator earlier. I've driven a lot of fun and fast cars in my life, but that was something I'll never forget. It was also extra special since Uncle Gary didn't let people borrow his track cars. Watching this awesome video made me sad because he passed away a few years ago, but it also brought back lots of great memories at his shop and spending time with him. Thanks guys and keep up the great work!
After having a stock power 1.8 NB (150bhp) and a turbo 1.6 NB (235bhp), I preferred the stock power one. But also having a slightly modded R53 Mini, I think a supercharged MX5 around 200bhp would be the ideal.
You’re right. About 200hp at the wheels is the sweet spot. Not so much it’s overwhelming or hard to control. Enough to make it fun to drive and decently quick. The supercharger is awesome because it’s linear and just adds power everywhere. But, people tend to go for a turbo since it’ll generally make more power.
Stock power for a 1.8 NB is about 140. It’s silly that many think that makes for a slow car. Around town and even on the open road it’s plenty of power to keep up. I hardly ever spin the motor above 5K on my NB and I’m still breaking speed limits.
Always wanted to get my ‘91 somewhere between 180-230whp seems to be a nice sweet spot. I would prefer a built NA 1.8 but certainly forced induction is the cheaper/easier route. Had plenty of fun at stock 116bhp! Actually what am I saying, I had an S2000 before it and I would absolutely love to K swap it (F20C would be ideal but have to alter steering geometry). But yeah still- 180-230whp 😅
I seriously love you guys! The comradery is perfect. Always trying to outdo one another at pretty much every competition you guys do. Reminds me of another group of 3 guys driving cars!
Go for a Flyin Miata LS3 swap… no turbo lag, 500 HP plus, perfect suspension set up by Keith Tanner and the crew. You could do all that, listen to the Bose stereo and enjoy air conditioning 😂. So sad they abandoned making those. The Habu was super car. Not like I could have ever afforded one. But it’s just like finding out unicorns went extinct. World is just a little less fun now.
I’ve been fortunate enough to drive a lot of really unique and fast cars. On a tight circuit, a supercharged NA or NB Miata blows everything else out of the water.
@@PringleSn1ffer Unpopular opinion, but I hate the sound of superchargers. The whine is annoying to me, whereas a turbo sounds like pure bliss. But I'm talking in general. As for people who like superchargers but don't like them on a miata, I have no idea why.

12:56 you mean the intercoolerpiping. That where you mount the blowoff valve to release the air. The wastegate is connected to the exhaust which releases exhaust gas before it goes into the turbo so the turbo runs the exact amount of boost you want
The supercharged one really peaked my interest. I loved my old NA and would love to get another one. Might have to go SC route this time! Great vid guys!
Great Video as ever! Do you plan on making a video in the future in which you compare the NA vs NB vs NC vs ND by doing timed laps or something similar? I think this would be brilliant.
Great video and I love mk1 MX5’s.👍😎 A dump valve does not put boost pressure into the exhaust it goes either into atmosphere or back into the intake track both are better for the turbo than having it stall, just to make that noise.😮
The 400bhp model's turbo flutter sounded like my KIA Proceed when it had a broken solenoid for 18 months - it took that long to diagnose. Can't believe Scott didn't know what the noise was 😂
@@mrskylinegtt Oh, it was still fun to belt around, right up until the day I got it fixed! That's because I found out the same day my head gasket was on the way out 🤦♂
Fun fact the “dump valve” they where talking about with the last mx5 doesn’t dump into the exhaust, that’s the waste gate. The reason it makes that noise is it could have a blow off valve venting to atmosphere, making that pssst sound but it doesn’t have one so all that pressure comes back out the front of the turbo

I own a '93 NA with 30k miles. Such a brilliant smile machine. Simple recipe of coilovers, brakes, wheel and tires, and frame bracing lets you really enjoy every bit of the 100hp. :)
Agreed on the suspension and maybe wheel and tire mods. Those can transform a Miata, and it is a driving car after all. People often focus too much on power output. But when a car weighs 2,300 pounds, you can’t think of it like a conventional car with the usual solutions.
@11:43…. Me giggling at the e whooshy noises…😂. I feel better knowing it’s not just me who does this. “Do it again!” This is why I pulled the complete drivetrain out of my 1990 and replacing it with a forged engine capable of 400 whp on pump gas!
you really needed a V8 swapped one for the test, can we get another test of the best stock engine block Miata versus different engine swaps? but that didn't make it not great video, thanks for all the awesome stuff guys!
The issue is there isn’t much choice for V8 engines in the UK. The Rover (Buick) V8 is great but isn’t powerful without lots of mods, anything Jap is 3x the price, no LS options and the Germans all are super complicated.
Having owned a 270 hp first-generation Miata (with Flyin’ Miata Stage 3 Turbo and race suspension), I found the speed to be a double-edged sword. Very few cars of any type could stay with it on a twisty road. But driving it that fast was, frankly, scary. The turbo lag caused severe bog at a corner’s apex, followed by a huge rush of power as I straightened the wheel to exit. Basically I had to floor the accelerator in the middle of the corner, and pray like hell the car was pointed straight ahead when the power kicked in. Because even with limited-slip and barely legal tires, the rear wheels would be overwhelmed and spin, at which point if I was still turning, the back end of the car wanted to pass the front. When you bear in mind the consequences of snap-oversteer and a high-speed spin - you can understand that while my much-modified Miata was exciting to drive, it was no longer fun to drive. Why not just drive it slower, you ask. Because then I’d just be going slow in a fast car, which is neither exciting NOR fun. Miata owners need to understand that the 1960s British roadsters the Miata is based on were not particularly powerful. The 1969 Lotus Elan put out only 115 hp. But that’s all this featherweight two-seater, with race-bred double-wishbone suspension, needed to deliver maximum FUN on a twisty road on a summer’s day with the top down. Current-generation Miatas deliver more power than the original but remain focused on lightness, handling, and nearly perfect input controls - shifting, braking, steering - that result is one of the most engaging driving experiences at any price. A current Miata would have scored high in this comparison - and in stock form: bargain priced, super reliable, cheap to run, and a blast to drive.
Despite there being a little more than a 400% (4x) increase in power from the 90hp MX-5 to the 400hp MX-5 there was only a 16% improvement in lap times.
Funny comment on the tyres for the original MX-5, when Toyota relaunched the 86 they used hybrid eco tyres to reduce the grip to keep the fun. For turbo flutter, check out the VL Nissan RB30, Chapel Street special.
Driven many a Miata in anger from all generations with all kinds of power options from SR, rotary swaps to Turbo, SC set ups. ...never met a miata with too much power. my favorite being a LS swapped 1st gen with 400+whp. doesnt matter what power a miata has. just a damn fun car period.

Funny comment on the tyres for the original MX-5, when Toyota relaunched the 86 they used hybrid eco tyres to reduce the grip to keep the fun. For turbo flutter, check out the VL Nissan RB30, Chapel Street special.
Lmao I love the "wow" segment regarding the supercharger whine 😂
It's a shame y'all didn't reach the final boss: Jimmy Broadbent's Mazda MX-5 nicknamed "Minty"
Great video. That little NA drift car looks like SOOOOOOO much fun.
11:37 every dudes reaction to experiencing the turbo flutter for the first time.
"Do it again"
6:39 Will just spoke perfect Chinese when he said "Woaaa"
The throttle cable mishap footage made this one. The driving step by step at 7 mph was hilarious.
This was the perfect chance to call Jimmy. Throw Minty in at the end?
This looked like so much fun again. Call me jealous! Can't wait to see what you guys do next!❤
If you thought 400bhp is nuts in an mx-5 check out the one Jimmy Broadbent built for time attack UK. It is 600bhp with full aero too named Minty. Still in it's shake down period really with stuff breaking or not working as well as they want, but it is still rapid.
Will's face here 11:39 really shows how cars make men happy.
the MX-5 'Miata' is a Legendary car a.k.a. Style Icon!
Dude we need a Team 87 and OVERDRIVE team up video. Scott driving Minty would be so sick.
0:18 i like how the red one is winking
This video brought back memories of my 1990 Monster Miata, with its Mustang 5 litre motor and 5 speed transmission. I miss that car!
Brilliant video boys!! Loved it. Need to buy a Mk1 MX5 now and get building! 😅
Now THIS is my kind of video!
it came with 115 HP the UK laws made MAZDA create that atrocity.
Previd ads rolling and already love this vid ngl I’m so excited
I miss my miata. Such a fun car. Stock power train plus some chassis stiffening did wonders to handling.
I love the Miata. All of em. The NB and ND2 RF are my favs, but they are all great for various reasons. I like the Toyota powered Lotus's for similar reasons.
One of main Koenigsegg test driver Robert Serwański was multiple champion of Mazda MX-5 race series.
Never owned one but I’ve driven plenty of na Miatas and they really do drive great. Just a classic no nonsense roadster
The line up of little happy faces, love these cars
Use the geny to charge the batteries! Registration doesn't seem to go with model/Mark of Chieftain.
I just want to know when overdrive will get a TV show 😊 imagine what these guys could do with a top gear budget.
Love to see gripped ups mx5 on show. Legendary driver
Thank you! 🥹
Giving up doesn't always mean you are weak; sometimes it means that you are strong enough to let go.
I'm a simple man, I hear a turbo spooling, and whistling, I smile
think your trio would do better job than current top gear presenters. you getting better with time fast. dont stop 🛑 🛑
You guys missed the opportunity to ask Jimmy Broadbent to lend Minty. That would be fun to watch.
Quality Miata content right here!
