this video is 100% on point
Hispanic (hispanicus): people whose descendants or people who were from the iberian peninsula (spain & portugal).
latin/o/a: people whose descendants or people who were from a latin (rome) based speaking country (italy, spain, france, romainia, portugal).
latino & hispanic in modern times is a way of grouping all spanish speaking people as one, ironically excluding the original european latins/hispanics while pushing back/supressing the history of the original inhabitants of so called "latin america." this generalizes all spanish speakers & alienates & erases the smaller groups. in the US, many non spanish speakers think that all "latinos" are Mexican (the largest spanish speaking group). because of this, most people, including spanish speakers cant speak on unique things of people like Uruguayans, Paraguayans, Ecuadoreans, Chileans & so on...
as a mestizo, i refute the names hispanic/latino & the newer terms, latinx/latine. the constantly renaming of us is just more colonization and control over us & the idea that we (brown people) are not civilized enough to at least name ourselves. this has been going on since cristophers arrival.
to quote a past slogan: "Mexican, not latino, not hispanic."
more people need to see this video, especially people whose families come from spanish speaking countries.

This is a very inspiring lecture Professor! If I can, may I use it as a source in a research paper on cultural genocide?

Hispanic refers to Spanish and Portuguese and they are part of the Latin group Italians, French and Romanian. These are europeans. Latin America was named after those who conqurered this area.

In ancient times people would introduce themselves as such "hello I am Sophia from Naples Italy," why hello Sophia I am Igor from Romania. We should go back to that, then there is no mistake of where u came from.

to be fair the native peoples where not love and peace flower children. they where brutal in their own right and made horrid wars of conquest. besides 2/3 of the native peoples died of decease when the europeans brought over every plague causing virus that toppled empires in the old world. not saying colonialism is good, but it was and it shaped the world today. should we learn all history, and start being proud of our native ancestry? sure but at the same time blaming people that are long ago dead is not productive nor is it right to not accept your european ancestry too. however there are plenty of people who have little to no european ancestry that should keep their languages, and traditions.

What if 2/3 of the native people didnt die from the plaque? What if they were just rebranded and erased , now just called "Mexicans"
