That kind of claim is always more complicated than it initially seems, given that languages continually change, but not in the same ways or at the same rates, and also because we don't always have documentary evidence for each language of how long it has been in use. But every nation likes to claim an ancient tradition if they can. Sometimes it is their language.

I visited Georgia in 2019 and it was the most beautiful country I've been to to date, underrated food, extremely friendly and proud people, incredible nature and so so much history. I could spend years there and still not get enough of it. დიდი მადლობა საქართველო!
I've lived here, in beautiful Georgia, for 3 years now. This is how it happend : 4 years ago, i went on a short visit, to Moscow. On Tverskaya st. I passed by a Georgian restaurant, i was hungry, so i went in, to get a dinner. The food was so delicious and also my girlfriend told me, about Georgia. On that restaurant, i decided, that i wanted to visit Georgia. A half year later, i booked ticket to Georgia, to celebrate my birthday. I was in Tbilisi for 12 days. I realized, it was the best country, i've been to (i travel a lot and on that time, i've had been to 32 countries, including living 8 years in SE-Asia). I decided, i wanted to try to live in Georgia. Why?? Great people, beautiful nature, delicious food, very cheap country to live in and they have a very long nice summer, from mid april to late october. On top of that, there's so many cheap, but good apartments for rent here. I live in a 80 m2 apartment, on 10th floor, with a huge balcony with fantastic view now. Rent: $360 😃 Apartments like that, would cost 3 or 4 times more, in Copenhagen. As mentioned, i've been here 3 years now. I enjoy every day here. It's 10.000 times better, than my cold, windy and expensive home country, in scandinavia. I have no intensions about relocate, not at all. Didi madloba Georgia, for letting me enjoy my life here 🙏👌👍🇬🇪😁 Btw, thanks for uploading a good and informative video 👌👍 I❤️Georgia🇬🇪
Ah yes, a Nord Dane that just can't help but try and settle on other people's lands. Nothing new here. Well, too bad for you, you'll never earn the citizenship. This state does at least 1 thing right, earning the Georgian citizenship is extremely difficult for outlanders. I'd say it should be straight up impossible for everyone but the ethnic Georgians, but I suppose difficult will have to do. For now.
One of my best friends is Georgian and I trully respect Georgia. We have a similar history, fighting for freedom and for sovereignty. I'd wish to visit Georgia one day. Your food, music and culture is awesome. Greetings, From your Polish brothers.
Georgia, Iberia, Albania... It's funny how, despite being known by so many names that are places, elsewhere, Georgia is so utterly it's own thing. Language? Linguistic isolate. Where are they originally come from? Right there. Just like, walked out of Africa, the cradle of humanity, stopped in Georgia, and were just like, "Perfect! We'll stay here," and absolutely meant it.
well the Georgian language isn't necessarily an isolate. It's in the Kartvelian family which includes a few more languages such as Laz and Mingrelian. Although it's speculative, it could have a connection to Basque since of a lot of similar words and the genetic evidence that neolithic farmers came from Anatolia and settled in Europe, and it isn't much of a stretch to say they might've settled in the Caucasus as well.
Mountains seem to pull languages and peoples in much as flat plains seem to spread them out. Kartvelian is very different from the other Caucasian languages so one could say that they settled at different times.
@@captainch6182 if you ask me that is like the biggest strech I have ever seen most of the ancestors of the kartvelian people probably didnt even spoke kartvelian back then there were many languages and at the spesfic place of caucasia somehow kartvelain become the most dominant by chance

Fun fact about the golden fleece - one common theory of origin of that story is that ancient Georgians/Colchians used fleeces to collect gold nuggets from mountain streams.
Golden fleece is wheat, w/o which Greece would have starved It's about establishing trade routes & colonies (in the story, a Greek man escapes to Iberia from Greece with the ram)
The legend of Argonauts and the golden fleece refers to the gift of metallurgy technology, which Greeks had no prior knowledge of. They brought the skill of gold melting to the Hellenic world

I am the one who moved to Georgia out of sheer love for the place. All great things people are saying about Georgia are true. I will name another thing I love about Georgia and it kind of tops everything else: Georgia has the most delicious air, you cannot get enough of it. People may not notice, but the Georgian air makes everything so easy, whether you hike in the mountains, or making your way through a crowded street, whether you are enjoying abundant local feasts or just sleep with your window open. It's just easy.
I've traveled quite a lot and Georgia is one of my favorite places on Earth. The Georgians are some of the most kind and hospitable, yet proactive and feisty people in the world. It's seriously respectable. They are so wonderful and warm and kind, especially compared to some of their neighbors, but as a nation they will never give up easily and they will always try to fight- they never think it's pointless- I really respect it. Their wine is delicious of course but their food is INSANE, it's so unique and so delicious. Delicately spiced and very hearty- amazing soups and dumplings. Great bread everywhere, for every meal. Amazing cheeses of all kinds- such variety in such a small nation. My favorite dishes are the hearty soups Kharcho and Chikhirtma, but you cannot forget their delicious breads such as Lobiani and Imeruli Khachapuri. Another favorite of mine are these cheese stuffed mushrooms which I don't know the name of. Also Ojahuri is classic and delicious meat and potatoes dish. Often Georgian food is served on a hot plate, which is awesome! Georgia has such an awesome capital, it has such an amazing soul with tons of young people and expats, it's beautiful and lively. My favorite places to visit are Signagi and really all the rest of Kakhetia. Javakheti is also awesome, especially for skiing or a mountain resort vacation. Towns like Bakuriani and even Akhaltsikhe are wonderful in the summer- and you cannot forget a staple of Georgia, Borjomi mineral water. Named after a town in Javakheti that is really nice for a quiet, relaxing mountain vacation. I tell everyone to come to Georgia, I have never fallen in such love with a nation before. It's such a romantic place. Visit the whole country, go everywhere. It is relatively affordable to see everything if you're coming from the west, and especially if you take buses. The food is great, the people are awesome, most of them speak good English. It's seriously a must see place. I've visited three times since my first trip there last year. I will continue to go back every single chance I get- I might even go to university in beautiful Tbilisi. Their tourist slogan is "Tbilisi loves you" and god damn I really felt the love
Thank you for summarising Gergian history so well in such short video . My child is half English and half Georgian .I teach her to be proud of her harritage and religion (orthodox Christianity), our ancestors fought for us to retain our vibrant culture ,language and religion. I am truly blessed to be Georgian, and am so proud of my beautiful little "Sakartveko".
What an ancient and fascinating history for a country that isn't well known in Western Europe The flag looks great too I would like to visit this country one day 🇫🇷🇬🇪
I fell in love with Georgia after a random visit because flights were cheap from where I was. The first thing we noticed was the nature, as Georgians have a way of coexisting with trees and fields that we should definitely learn from. Mullberry trees can be found everywhere and sweeten the air. The wine is delicious, and so is all the food, which is a delightful mix of East & West but 100% Georgian. Fruits and vegetables all taste like I remember from my childhood. History is present everywhere, and if you go, please rent a car o even better hire a driver-guide to show you further than Tbilisi (which is a lovely city but there's much more to this country). If you love active trips with loads of hiking you're in luck, Georgia has plenty of hills and mountains to visit. You can also go to the sea resorts along the coast of the Black Sea, or in season, the snow resorts especially on the hills of Kazbegi area. Have I talked about the people? Our experiences with Georgians have been fantastic, they just enjoy life and all good things in it. I realize this is turning into a passionate touristic brochure but do yourself a favour and visit Georgia!

Hello from Turkey. Georgia is very nice country. Ideal for live or travel. Georgian people is more friendful from some others. At last years, Turkey and Georgia on a few cooperations. I hope, more common works and friendships next years.
To be honest, some of the biggest nations in Europe would not exist now if Georgia was not located where it is. Georgian warriors used to hold every massive raid performed by Asians who wished to conquer Europe every decade. Unfortunately for Georgians and luckily for Europeans, some of the most dangerous empires in Asia have never got to visit Europe, due to the exact same reason_Georgians had to hold them, otherwise enemies would decimate them and the whole home of christianity, even though since III-IV centuries,Georgians have been following the Orthodox Church and the most common religion in Europe is Catholicism. European leaders, mostly, didn't even have any information about the threatening Mongol tribes, while each of my ancestors had to fight against 10 enemy soldiers and pretty commonly, even more.
I'm Armenian and I love Georgia and its history! I think Armenia and Georgia share a lot of historical and religious similarities. PS: I love your flag!
I was in Georgia last 6 days. My favorite thing to eat there is easily Khinkali - The King of dumplings. Especially in Pasanauri the Khinkalis are legendary. The most hearty dumpling you will ever eat - with the "broth" carefully preserved inside each dumpling (which you drink - yes there is a very specific way to eat Khinkalis!) Tblisi is of course amazing but I liked Mt. Kazbek and the monastery there to be the most beautiful place. Stunning beauty all around.. Also the Georgian folk music is lovely to hear. I was there on new year and in the city main square they had a big event and at midnight they sang "Bindesporia Sopheli" in a 30 people ensemble on stage and I had tremendous goosebumps. A lot of people teared up! Beautiful country!
I loved Georgia when I visited it. Nice people and the country is full of ancient churches. Sounds like the country, like Armenia, has the bad luck of being in a central position and threatened by bigger countries. The fact that they are stable countries today is a testament to the strong will of the people there.
My mother is from Georgia so I was there sometimes when I was really young Last time I was there I was 3 tho Also I sadly don't speak a single word Georgian because I was raised on German(My mother migrated to Germany legally when she was 20 or something for education reasons and stayed after she got me)
Another cool fact: in the late V century, Iberia had a king named Vakhtang. He was a great ruler and a great warrior, often wearing a wolf skin over his armor and headpiece (like Hercules wore the skin of Nemean lion). He was a huge and strong dude too, well over 2 meters in height. In battle, persians were so afraid of him that they used to warn each other by calling Dur az Ghorg a sar (I definetely butchered it) that means "beware of the wolf head". And it became his nickname - Vakhtang Gorgasal (a bit changed tho)

I visited my friend Lado in Georgia back in May of 2017. My favorite place to visit when I was in Georgia was the Gelati Monastery in Kutaisi. It is now a World Heritage site. The feeling of spirit inside the chapel was so strong! It is a very ancient place. King George the 4th is buried there beneath the feet of visitors at the main entrance to the chapel (by his choice!). Kutaisi is west of Tbilisi -- between Tbilisi and Batumia. (Batumi is on the Black Sea.) At one time (circa 1,100 AD) the Gelati Cathedral was an academic center. Aspiring scholars came from all over Europe to attend there. I found the people of Georgia to be friendly and kind.

As a Georgian, I thank you for this video! You are foreigner but you did really great job for Georgia... Unfortunately, Georgians don't do so much to show their culture and history to the world. That's why people don't know about us. or they only know us by Joseph Stalin.. This is very sad. I think we are only nation to have 3 Alphabets... and our little nation has 15 centuries of continuous literary tradition. unfortunately, people in the west don't know about our medieval poetry and other masterpieces.. for example, Shota Rustaveli who is one of the greatest poets in the history of Mankind...
Japanese has also 3 alphabets. But yes. Georgian language is very unique. And to my knowledge the only language along with the Basque language that predates the indo-European(aryan) languages in Europe.
By the way, title of Tamar the great was king, not queen. In general, Georgians have this kind of cultural feminism or whatever you call it. For example, in the language, we don't differ genders. ( He, she, they all have one word "is" so yeah, we don't have this 'they' issue ) Also, we had another female king briefly, daughter of Tamar, sister of George IV. when he died without legal heir, she became king ( yes, again, she became king and not queen). My advice for travelers is to visit Vardzia, medieval town carved in rocky hill ( finished by Tamar). And Uplistsikhe, another carved town near Gori. And Kutaisi, well, I'm from there, so give it a try ( medieval churches and wonderful caves nearby )
Feminism might have broad understanding. For example, in early 20th century, right to vote for women was part of feminism and the first republic allowed women to vote way before other western countries did. I didn't imply that Georgian culture is feminist in nature but it does have some aspects of feminism. Anyways, thank you all for informing me that it has nothing to do with feminism.

Not Georgian but emigrated to Georgia from the US. Beautiful country, warm people, strong traditional culture, ridiculously difficult language, and the highest level of freedom / democracy, lowest level of corruption in this region. Also has very low taxes, low regulation, is generally one of the cheapest places to live in the world. Georgia is still a devout Christian nation, and still fighting against the constant threat of foreign invasion (these days, mainly from Russia). My favorite Georgian food is probably mtsvadi (wood fired BBQ meat skewers) or shekhmeruli katmis (baked chicken in cream sauce).

@Future Caucasian politician naturally when people travel to Georgia some will stay because of how cheap living is. Georgia relies on travel that's where most of their income comes from. I want what's best for Georgia and my people who live there.

the reason persians called georgia land of the wolves was because that king david the fourth had a helmet which had a head of wolf in front and a head of a lion on the back so when they saw david on the battlefield (yes he was taking part in battles) they would scream "beware of the wolf" in persian.
It's pretty incredible how a nation famous for its fortifications and mountains became such a frequent battleground. Georgia is very unique and somehow its history always reminds me of Ethiopia. Both have a history of being isolated Christian kingdoms, that managed to preserve their cultures throughout thousands of years. On a side note, Timur must have had a serious thing for Georgian women and wine or what? Every time he rode his armies west they made a pit stop to raid Georgia and then again on the return trip back....

That kind of claim is always more complicated than it initially seems, given that languages continually change, but not in the same ways or at the same rates, and also because we don't always have documentary evidence for each language of how long it has been in use.

Your welcome.

I've lived here, in beautiful Georgia, for 3 years now. This is how it happend :
4 years ago, i went on a short visit, to Moscow.
Didi madloba Georgia, for letting me enjoy my life here 🙏👌👍🇬🇪😁

They do it even today.
This hits hard assuming the ties of the land with Jason and the argonauts.
Golden fleece is wheat, w/o which Greece would have starved
It's about establishing trade routes & colonies (in the story, a Greek man escapes to Iberia from Greece with the ram)
In Siberia they use wolf skins to gather gold flakes from streams. There are many more wolves than sheep in Siberia.
The legend of Argonauts and the golden fleece refers to the gift of metallurgy technology, which Greeks had no prior knowledge of. They brought the skill of gold melting to the Hellenic world

First of all thank you for your outstanding work! 🇬🇪 I will give you just one advice, there is no planning to do things in Georgia, just visit the country and you will experience amazing and unexpected adventure, including eating tasty food, drinking one of the best wines, visiting historical cultural sites, hearing Georgian music, which known the earliest polyphonic tradition of the christian world, you will also meet a lot of hospitable people etc... 🍷
Thanks Gio!...I really want to visit someday...the country looks very beautiful
Georgian food is absolutely delicious.
What is there to be eaten there? I come from far away in the mediterranean and would like to know!

Damn Egypt, Vietnam and Japan. Everything was going so fine for the Mongols.
And medieval Indonesia.
Yess, even we were going to participate in 5th crusade and who knows what would happen then. Actually, pope waited for some time for Georgian reinforcement but most of our soldiers died in battles against Mongols so we could no longer participate
And now Georgia are allies with the descendants of the mongols and enemies with Russia and Armenia.... Money over conscience i guess.
@@lucraetius I guess you are Armenian. Hear me out neighbor. In past 30 years Russians brought to us much misery and pain we can in no way or shape ally with them. Many empires have collapsed and many small states have disappeared, but Georgia is still alive. Thank God for that, and thanks to the Georgian kings, they sacrificed themselves for Georgia. Many Christians who were under the influence of Muslims also sacrificed themselves.

Yes! I have been waiting so long for a video on Georgia. I just revere the ancient and historical traditions of this unique country. Funny, yesterday i received my order of Donald Rayfield’s book; Edge of Empires: A history of Georgia. I have recently experienced an amazing delicacy called "churchela". That in itself is a good reason to visit Georgia. But the main reason is that Georgians are amazing people.
You live in a gorgeous place! So jealous. Can't wait to be able to travel again.
Like King of Poland Jadwiga. She than married prince of Lithuania.
@@user-hb9mz2hp2g maybe, unfortunately I've never heard of king Jadwiga
Thanks for the info mate, very interesting.
I've been fascinated with Georgia since about mid-2000's and would love to visit one day. Great video on the history.

@Future Caucasian politician i'm Georgian American born and raised in the US im lucky in that regard. But America isn’t what it once was things are progressively getting worse for people that you wouldn't even think for a second would have it rough. Also, what's the correlation with that white supremacy comment, its better for our economy if we have more people living here.
@Future Caucasian politician naturally when people travel to Georgia some will stay because of how cheap living is. Georgia relies on travel that's where most of their income comes from. I want what's best for Georgia and my people who live there.
@Future Caucasian politician that's also not true everyone is welcomed in Georgia. lmfaoo regardless who you are you will be treated like you are a guest sent from god
@Future Caucasian politician literally what😭😭 most Americans can't even point where Georgia is on a map.
@Future Caucasian politician Georgia isn't white, '' white supremacists '' don't consider Caucasians 'white'
The word for “wolf” in Persian is “Ghorge” so that makes plenty sense
gorg
name that wolf
george
Actually Its gorg without H. Gorgestan means land of the wolf and today in iran we call georgia "gorjestan". I think over time g replaced with j
the reason persians called georgia land of the wolves was because that king david the fourth had a helmet which had a head of wolf in front and a head of a lion on the back so when they saw david on the battlefield (yes he was taking part in battles) they would scream "beware of the wolf" in persian.
@@Sirgo_07 it was king vakhtand actually and in history books in our schools he's referred to as "vakhtang gorgasal"

Every time he rode his armies west they made a pit stop to raid Georgia and then again on the return trip back....
you mean geogia was like the gasstation of the horde? xd amousing thought.
Well we made him angry quiet few times. Firstly we gave road to there enemies golden horde (also raided few caravans why not) he came kick our asses and took our king Bagrat. Then send him back woth 12000 warriors to made country muslim but naaah Bagrat's son made ambush saved his father from captivity and destroyed timurs army so second raid came. After bagrats death King became his son George VII who was one tough son of a bitch so he continued resistence. After third raid it just became habbit
