Sarah Turney on Mile Higher: • Unsolved Disappearance...
    Defenders of Children: defendersofchildren.org/
In today's video, I sat down with Sarah Turney, sister of Alissa Turney, and we talked about everything that's happened leading up to and following her sister's murder trial, where their father was the accused. Shockingly, Michael Turney was acquitted after a lack of preparation from the prosecution. She also shared some personal details about how she's been exploited by 20/20 and other content creators and how it's shaped her views on true crime. Tune in for a very emotional yet very important conversation.

Alissa's dad was obsessed with her. She belonged to him in his mind. No doubt he was abusing her. The boyfriend was in the way. Her resistance triggered him. He was also giving everything to Sarah to keep her out of the way and to poison her opinion. So glad she was able to see through his BS and is so strong now.

I swear the prosecution purposely dropped the ball. They never cared about this case and they only went forward so that they wouldn’t have to deal with this case. I feel so angry for how awful they were, how unprofessional they were, and how justice was not served. Alissa and Sarah both deserve better. Michael was CLEARLY OBSESSED with her. He is a narcissistic abuser of both Alissa and Sarah. I’m so sorry Sarah. You are so strong and Alissa would be proud to see how much you have advocated for her.

I say this with my whole chest: You should look into suing the state for negligence. It is their duty to properly address a case in the court of law, and they grossly mishandled evidence, witnesses, etc. I would donate money to support that in a heartbeat.

Many things about this case make my blood boil, but one of the things that makes me the most mad is the lack of reporting by Alissa’s teacher. I’m a teacher. If any one of my students ever said they were being abused like that, I’d be on the phone with DCF IMMEDIATELY. The fact that teachers are legally mandated reporters just makes me sick. You don’t get to decide if the kid is telling the truth, that’s for the experts to decide. But you HAVE to report it! Were things so drastically different in 2001? How does this teacher live with herself 😡😭

Unfortunately when someone has been acquitted of a crime, to get another trial for him would risk double jeopardy. IF they were able to get another trial and he was to be convicted, it could very well be overturned on appeal due to the double jeopardy rule, sadly we may never see real justice on this case because of it.

She’s done so much to advocate for her sister and I can’t even imagine all the pain she’s endured while doing it. But she did it for her sister! That’s love. I may not know her but I trust Kendall’s opinion on her character and she clearly cares about and believes Sarah and I do too. This was a very revealing and frustrating and disheartening episode. This case gave me chills. It reminded me too much of "sleeping murder" from Agatha Christie. In that story it was the stepbrother being weird and overprotective and ultimately murdering her when he realized that she would never "love him back" and that she loved her husband.
Then he made it appear as if she ran away with someone. Only the memories of her stepdaughter, a little child at the time of murder who witnessed it and starts to remember 20 years later when she comes upon the house where it happened.

I applaud Sarah. My baby brother died last December, the day before Christmas Eve, from fentanyl poisoning. I went through his phone (that the cops didn't take) and found evidence of who he purchased it from. I gave all of the evidence over to the police. When it felt like nothing was happening, I got in touch with the local newspaper. They started questioning the police, and the guy was arrested that Friday night (September 1st). His first bond was set for half a million. There was a second bond hearing and I had to talk in front of the judge and court about him threatening me before he was arrested (had proof) and his brother coming to my house 2 weeks before trying to intimadate me and how I have a no trespassing notice on him. The judge said he had never had a bond over $100,000 for homicide but that there was a first thing for everything and that his bond would not be reduced and would stay where it is. This is still the beginning. The trial starts in December. I would do everything all over again for my baby brother. He was only 35. All through the stress and grief, I have to fight for him. As the oldest child, I feel it's my responsibility. Thank God I still have my younger brother. He has supported me through all of this and has been there for me. We had a rough childhood and it bonded all 3 of us and we were all so close. My baby brother was my best friend. He lived 3 minutes from me. He was a great son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, etc. I miss him so much. I'm ready for this to go to trial. It's being watched at a federal level to see what they can start doing with these fentanyl dealers. We've lost so many people in and around our small town. It's awful. I'm trying to set a precedent that there are consequences for selling that crap to people and killing them. I love you always, John Boy. Your big sister is going to get justice for you!

Alissa was the scapegoat in that family in my opinion. And it is wild that Sarah eventually took Alissa's side! That is VERY rare. Normally everyone has disdain for the scapegoat. They are slandered. People in the family are okay with the scapegoat being hurt. They minimize the violence, justify it, or they deny it as they turn and condemn the scapegoat. My opinions, peace.

Well yes but I’m sure her sister has gone through years of therapy. Her father was probably very manipulative. I’m sure it took her a while to start questioning things and dig deeper. Sometimes it just takes growing up and being an adult to question your childhood trauma.

@@Catturtlelover3000 Scapegoating can last a lifetime. And in my opinion, it is rare (for family members in a dysfunctional home) to go against the narcissist who is very manipulative. Sarah was manipulated but she broke free and (that is) a testament to her strength. Therapy can help if you (can find) the right therapist. The brackets are my edits.

I'm not American so I'm not sure if this is a possibility but maybe a civil trial is an option if a new criminal trial isn't? That way its your (and perhaps the other victims) lawyers taking on the case not the state lawyers.
Or maybe there's a petition that can be made and sent to the DA. Maybe a heavy public support can make a difference.

Fist I’d like to say, thank you 😊 Kendall for presenting this story. I feel so very bad for Sara and for her loss. Also I feel bad about her loss of Alissa, her sister 👩. The fact that her father was acquitted is beyond belief. He is guilty in my opinion 😢. He should have received life in prison, for the crime he committed. I believe that he will continue with this type of behavior. If not caught. I watch LMN and also Lifetime channels and I often have seen that people who cause these types of issues seem to get away with it because the courts don’t believe them. It looks like 👍 those people can’t really prove that it happened to them. I think When SA/DV/and Rape occur the justice system has failed 😢 them. They can’t believe it was done ✅. It’s very hard to prove and the people get away with it so easily. When taken to court. They don’t ever get the proper justice that they deserve. I find this is often the case and especially with women, mostly. I believe that the justice system needs to change because they are against women who complain about this. Thank you 😊 for all your hard work that you do to keep us all informed. ❤ your kindness, and your knowledge too. 🦋💕💯😍💜👑🤬😰🌹🪻🌈🎆💎🛎️💚❣️☮️🩵✝️🖤☯️ 1:49:10
